Blaming the Camera

I've just finished my last call to Apple Tech Support for Final Cut Pro X. I use a Sony HDR-FX1000 camcorder to take video which is captured using Final Cut (7 or 10 - pick your poison) and, for SD videos, creates a DV/DVCPRO -NTSC 720 x 480 (640 x 480), Linear PCM, 16 bit little endian signed integer 48000 Hz Stereo (L R) file.
When I put the video on the timeline it looks fine, but when I put a theme on the video, it looks fuzzy. I've compared the Original video and an exported Apple ProRes 422 video looking at the SAME FRAME at the SAME SIZE and it looks fuzzy.
The technician that I spoke with told me that, since I use a Sony HDR-FX1000, that the DV/DVCPRO Video - made by capturing in Final Cut Pro X - is NOT COMPATIBLE WITH FINAL CUT X AND THAT IS THE REASON THAT THE TRANSCODED APPLE PRORES 422 VIDEO LOOKS DIFFERENT WHEN I ADD A THEME!!!!  Really!!! Are you kidding me????!!!!
After the image is captured, Final Cut X transcodes the original to an Apple ProRes 422 - which looks fine until I add a Theme (or lower third).
Clearly, this MUST BE THE CAMERA'S FAULT, since it is responsible for taking the original picture and NOT a problem with Final Cut X software!
Oh, yes, this does NOT happen with Final Cut Studio 7!!! Oh yeah, that one has a driver for the camera so that means the camera isn't at fault there!
Interestingly, I was told that this happens with other cameras as well - but they are also not supported in Final Cut Pro X so, they ALSO must not be creating a proper video file.
Hmmmm.... let me think.... IF there are a number of cameras of different brands, models, etc. making videos that are ALL not compatible with Final Cut Pro X - even though the files have been created and captured using Final Cut Pro X - hmmm.... maybe it is the SOFTWARE (FINAL CUT PRO X) that's the problem!!!!
Time to think about blaming the cameras and their manufacturers (for producing a supposedly improper video file) and start thinking that maybe FCP X has a problem.
I'm done - Support isn't worth trying if this is the help I get.

As soon as you add an effect, your footage needs rendering (an orange bar appears above the storyline in the playhead timeline.  If your preferences are set to use proxy media for playback, your video will look very fuzzy. If your preferences are set for Better Performance, then while FCPX is rendering (or trying to render) your footage in the background, the video will look a little fuzzy while playing. Once the footage is rendered, it should look fine while playing.
You can set the playback to High Quality. FCPX will tend to skip frames during playback until the video is rendered (not very likely, though, with SD footage.)
To set your choice of playback quality, go to Preferences > Playback > Use Original or Optimized media and the dropdown to High Quality.
If you've turned off Background Rendering, then you need to manually render your clips (control-R) or the entire storyline (control-shift-R). Or you can put up with the fuzziness while you work -- it's actually considered a *feature* to be able to plow through your editing chores while FCPX tries to render your work in the background.  The only thing that matters is that the project looks like you need it to when it is exported. [That fuzziness thing drives me a little nuts too, so I usually keep background rendering on, or, I'll frequently manually render the project ... while I'm thinking about what to do next. I like to keep the playback quality setting at High Quality.]

This doesn't make any sense to me either. First of all : ALL footage is transcoded to prores 422 at some point in the process, even if that's right before exporting. Themes have absolutely nothing to do with anything, and, they are also transcoded to ProRes (probably 4x4).
I had Final Cut Studio 3 and so I have all the DV/DVCPro codecs still installed on my system. Thing is: if you can get your media to even show in FCPX, then you've got it too and if FCPX will capture your video from your camera, then it is definitely NOT incompatible with FCPX. *I* have a camera that is incompatible with FCPX capture (@1080i res). I can however, use file import (*now*).
My workaround has been to open the files in Quicktime 7 Pro and transcode to ProRes from there... absolutely no diff in the long run and, I might say, I believe it's actually faster (plus I have the *choice* of LT, 422, 422(HQ) or 4x4). FCPX does all its transcoding as a background process. QT7Pro just flat out converts it (uses all the cores too.)

No... it's the camera manufacturers. There's nothing wrong with the video (give or take an argument or two.) It IS the file formats they tend to use. Just about every manufacturer has a "proprietary" *adaptation* of the (AVC/AVCHD in my case) file format that can cause problems with FCPX.  It is not Apple's fault, and they DO try to keep up. FCP7 would not recognize any of my Samsung camera footage (2 different cameras) but now, FCPX only has problems directly importing the 1080i footage of my newer camera (but like I said above, I can now import the files). It has been since version 10.0.2 that FCPX would capture/read directly the 720p footage from my camera.  So... some progress.
Time to think about blaming the cameras and their manufacturers (for producing a supposedly improper video file) and start thinking that maybe FCP X has a problem. I'm done - Support isn't worth trying if this is the help I get.

I am trying to open CR2 files from a Cannon EOS 1DX camera in Photoshop CS6 and I have already updated the Camera Raw Plug in but Photoshop is still giving me the cannot open files dialog box? Help?

Canon 1DX support was added to ACR in version 6.7, 7.1.  An updated CS6 should be at level ACR 8.6.  If your ACR is not at level 8.6 try using CS6 menu Help>Updates.  If that does not install ACR 8.6 try downloading the ACR and DNG 8.6 converter and see if ACR 8.6 will install into your CS6.

DNG files do not contain some metadata supplied by the camera, which can be used by the manufacturer's software. Thus, if you don't keep the original Raw photo, you will lose this information.
If your 1000% sure you're never going to use the manufacturer's software, then this isn't a problem. But who can be sure what software you will be using 10 years from now?

    Hi Jdentremont,
Lync client gets user photos by first querying the Address Book Web Query (ABWQ) service on the server, which is exposed through the Distribution List Expansion web service. The client receives
the image file and then copies it to the user's cache to avoid downloading the image each time it needs to be displayed. The attribute values returned from the query are also stored in the cached Address Book Service entry for the user. The Address Book Service
deletes all cached images every 24 hours, which means that it can take up to 24 hours for new user images to be updated in the cache on the server.
To troubleshoot your problem, please follow the steps below:
    1.  Navigate to
     “X:\share\1-WebServices-1\ABfiles\000000000\000000000” folder. (ABS file share)
You should see some photo files in this folder as the following screenshot.
    2. Delete all the files in this folder.
    3. On test PC, delete local cache files.
    %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync\[email protected]
    4. Sign-in Lync with the test account.
    5. Go back to the ABS file share, check if there is any Photo file in the folder.
    Best regards,
    Eric

  • Is there a way to switch off by default the video on FaceTime? I only ever use this app for audio/calls and hate the video being on. I especially hate that if I leave the app open to receive calls it means the camera and green light are on.

My issue is that I can't find a way to have the camera switched off when the app is open and so this means if I want the app open all day to receive calls then the camera is going to be on the whole time. Even if it didn't potentially drain the battery, or add to the CPU usage or whatever else may cause any problems whatsoever (wheel of death!), I just don't want the camera on as I don't see myself ever wanting to use the video call feature but I would use the audio/call multiple times throughout the day to make and receive calls. The camera being on when the app is open is enough to prevent me from using the app. Also ever since seeing that episode of criminal minds where if you saw the green light on above the screen then it meant the killer was watching you!
Basically I just can't believe there isn't a way to disable the camera whilst having the app running. I know when initiating an audio call the camera goes away, but I would like the camera away the whole time. To me it just would make sense that if you click the video option then the camera is on, and if you click the audio option then the camera goes off. It just seems waaaaay to basic a thought for apple to have missed... Let's face it, we're not all as pretty as the people in the apple adverts and don't want to see our ugly mugs staring back as us when we work all day at our macs!

I have exactly the same concern. It seems it would be a simple fix for Apple to allow users to turn off the camera (and even the mic) while keeping FaceTime open -- especially now that it turns out FaceTime must remain open in order to send and receive iPhone calls on a Mac.
I like to think this new functionality of FaceTime will be baked into a future release of Yosemite, as the current setup has that not-quite-finished feel of a work in progress. In the meantime, there's nothing like a little piece of Post-It stuck over the camera to keep the NSA from watching your face as you type a post to the Apple Support Communities.

  • Is there any way to stretch what was recorded as HD from the camera that became SD on FCE back to HD in the project. I have tried all settings and none seem to make any difference. Anamorphic doesn't seem to retain its setting when I set up a new sequenc.

    i am using FCE4

yes, I recorded straight from camera to computer. The camera is a Sony HDRSR12 and it was set to wide screen it ran through a Canopus ADVC300 via firewire to the computer.
I burnt some to DVD and if you set the TV screen on widescreen it looked great. But for those still with SD it will be skinny.
So I am not sure how to get the footage into a widescreen format in a sequence as the anamorphic setting doesn't work for this footage.

    Hi!
When I import photos with iPhoto, sometimes it imports them with wrong dates, even the dates are fine on the camera. It puts dates such as 2032. Does anyone know how can I fix that. As far as I know there is no way to change dates of the photos.

well that is very confusing since if the date is correct on the camera it will be correct in iPhoto

  • We can't get to the camera roll right now

I have a dell Latitude 10 table with Windows 8.1 RT. Last week I decided to unload all the pictures from the camera roll to my PC and I did it without a problem, but in the process I removed the camera roll folder under the public pictures library. Since
then, the camera app is not working and it gives me the following message: "We can't get to the camera roll right now". I've re-created the folder, set the default save location and public save locations to the Public Pictures folder but the error
keeps popping up every time I open the camera application. If I try to shoot a photo or a video it tells me that it couldn't be saved. How do I set the camera app to use the new folder?

I had the same Problem, and all experts could not help. I even dowloaded tools that say thy would fix the problem. Anyway as a matter of fact it still is a computer, no magic.
I found a way: Open regedit, search for "User Shell Folders".
    Then check all the directories.
In my case one of the directories refered to the one I deleted. I just changed it and restarted my computer.
On my iconia it saves into this key:
I changed it | Keep the Name of the folder "Camera Roll" depending on your language it will rename the folder in the Explorer library automaticly. (in Germany to Eigene Aufnahmen)

What on earth is happening? I am on PS CS6. I might point out everything was working normally up to  yesterday, when this first started.
I recently changed computer to 64bit from 32bit, not sure if this causing  the problem or not. Any help would be appreciated.

  • How do I get the camera widget to re-appear on my I phone 4S

The Camera Widget on my I Phone 4S is no longer on the screen--everything else is working properly.--the cameras are working as I can use FaceTime.  Have been unable to figure out how to get the widget to reappear so I can take photos.

I did not disable it or restrict in in "restrictions"  The camera is enabled.  I do not have my Apps Widgets in Folders but on sequential home screens.  If I reset the home screen layout, will my app widgets still appear??? I went to the "reset home screen Layout" block in general settings and had a message come up that said this would reset the home screen to factory settings.  So I did not reset it--was concerned that I might lose all the App widgets..

  • Why can't my new Macbook Pro not see individual MTS files on the sony cx700 flash drive? How do I get AVCHD MTS files off the camera not using imovie or FCP?

    Hi,
I bought a new MacBook Pro (OS X version 10.8) recently to replace an older version. I work with different Sony cameras (Hard drive and flash drive storage), but when I connect the cameras (Sony Cx560, 700 and XR520) to the Mac it only shows an AVCHD icon. Usually you can see the individual files. We have 3 Macbook Pro's here and on 2 of them it works. Is there a setting or a driver I need to download for this new Mac? The other ones read it without intsalling anything.
    Thanks for any tips.

There are two (and probably more than two) third party apps that will do this.
    1) ClipWrap
    2) Voltaic

Once pictures are moved from your camera to your iPad (using the camera connection kit), how do you get the photos off of the iPad? They do not show up in my photo stream or my iCloud. I am able to see any photo I took on the iPad using the iPad camera (in iTunes, photo stream, or when I open windows explorer and browse the iPad director), however I cannot see any photos transfered from my camera to the iPad.
