Blank/Black screen after waking up from sleep mode

Hi there,
So this is my first time using a macbook. I purchased a macbook pro with retina display in August of this year. I have never had this problem but after i have updated to the new Yosemite OS, my problem keeps happening. I will be using my computer to work on assignments. After, ill put my mac to sleep and close the lid screen. When i come back and turn it on, it shows a bank/black screen. The keyboard lights up but nothing shows on the screen. So i end up close my mac and reopening it again and it still is blank screen. After a few tries opening and closing, i type my login password even when the screen is black. After, i close it again and reopen it and now my screen shows my background and login information. I enter the password and it works fine. I'm not sure if this a problem that needs to be looked at? I have taken care of my computer since day 1 so im not sure why this problem is happening. Any help/input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hi ellaine,
Lets check your energy saver settings:
About Energy Saver sleep and idle modes in Mac OS X
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2412
Regarding your second question, it may be that your display is set to sleep before the screen saver starts. That would cause the screen saver to never display.
Thanks,
Matt M.

  • Screen remains blacks even after waking up from Sleep mode

    Hi,
I've had my Macbook Pro for over a year now and it hasn't given me any problems until recently. The screen would remain black when I open up the laptop to wake it up from sleep mode. There would be no response even when I press random keys. When I close the laptop again, the white light at the bottom right corner lights on (when it's supposed to "breathe" while sleeping). The light goes out when I open up the laptop. The only thing I could do is to restart the computer.
What is the problem? Are there any ways to rectify this?

I am going to add my problem to this as I believe it fits and may add to the conversation.
I have a MacBook Pro, am using Parallels, and have an issue waking it up from sleep.
    Circumstances:
I close the lid and walk away from the device in my office. When I return, (over night or an hour later) I open the lid, and if nothing happens swipe the touchpad or press a key, the power light changes from pulsating to steady. then in less than 15 seconds it goes back to pusating. The display never energizes, only remain black.
I usually try opening and closing several times, and occaisionally that will work. Other times, I hold the power key until I hear the drive halt, then turn it on. The grey screen will display, then blue, then just before it gets to the log in, the screen goes black (not energized) and the light pulsates.
I have tried the PRAM reset and Safe Mode starts with no luck.
*Now the really wierd thing.* I decieded to contact Apple support on line and pay for help (yes that is weird in an of itself for me). As I began the process it came to the part for me to enter my serial number. With the lid open, I turned the MacBook on its side to try to read the number and the screen energized and the password unlock prompt was waiting for me to enter the password.
    Observations
I had read where the light sensor could be blocked by dirt or the light in the room was too dim, but I clean the screen and there is plenty of light. Dales Post is the first that I have seen Parallels and the Sudden Motion Sensor. That makes some sense to me because of what happened when I turned it on its side. I have verified that it happens regardless of using Parallels. as teh last time I did it I had closed out of all my VMs and I believe exited Parallels.
I am going to try the deleting the power preferences file and will report back.

  • W510 eSATA/USB2.0 combo port does not respond after waking up from sleep mode

Has anyone tried to connect external DVD/CD player or burner to the eSATA/USB combo port and experienced very slow system performance after waking up from sleep mode?  It might takes minutes to launch an application program that usually takes just few seconds.  My W510 can not even restart.  It will just stop at the Thinkpad logo if I tried to restart after waking up from sleep.
The funny thing is if I moved the external DVD/CD player to the USB2.0 port in the back, everything went back to normal.  I don't know if this has anything to do with the fact that the combo port has something to do with eSATA.
    Thanks

It seems that this problem is unique to my system. I am hoping that one of the Mac Guru's will have at least a pointer in the right direction.
    Thanks.

  • Compaq C700 - CPU fan not running after waking up from Sleep mode

    Hi guys,
Waking up from Sleep mode does not start the CPU fan.
    Kernel:  2.6.32-ARCH
    KDE : 4.4
Let me know what other details you need.

I was having the same problem after installing mountain lion.
What i did was in Finder went to /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/  and deleted all the networking plists (refer screen shot). Then restarted the Mac and in Network Preferences reconnected to my WLAN.
    That solved the problem.

    Hi,
I have almost the same problem with my T540p, except that there is no internet connection not only after waking up from the sleep mode, but also when starting windows and sometimes the internet connection will get suddenly lost during normal windows run.
I tried installing all kinds of drivers - latest from intel, latest from lenovo update (which is always different version from the one from intel), some older versions. Nothing helps.
Re-enabling the WiFi device like Aaziz1982 suggested, doesn't help.
Here is a more detailed description of my problem: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T540p-WiFi-Connected-no-internet/m-p/177818...
    Does anyone have other suggestions?
    Thank you,

  • Satellite P200D-11R sound and graphics crash after waking up from sleep mode

    Hi,
I am wondering if anyone here has had similar experiences to mine (below) or can offer any solutions.
I have upgraded my P200D-11R OS to Vista 64 Ultimate to take advantage of the extra performance. I also add that the BIOS has already been updated to version 1.4.
Well, everything works fine with the standard 2Gig of RAM which the laptop was supplied with originally, however, when I upgrade the RAM to 4Gig (2 x 2GB Samsung 667mHz modules), sound and graphics problems appear every time the machine is brought back from sleep mode.
The sound card makes a very laud fuzzy noise every time it wants to play a sound and the graphics produce lots of horizontal lines on the screen. I then just have to restart the machine which means loosing all my unsaved work.
Everything works fine as long as the machine does not enter sleep mode. I have currently disabled the sleep mode to prevent the machine from entering it but I am finding life very hard without it.
I am very surprised and also disappointed at the fact that Toshiba did not test these machines with Vista 64 Ultimate and 4Gig of RAM!
    Extra info:
The memory is the same Samsung type as the 1Gig modules supplied by Toshiba originally with the machine, and the part number Toshiba recommends.
I have tried installing other (more recent) device drivers by Realtek and ATI without any improvements.
The memory modules pass all tests and are not defective. They have also been tested on my friends Dell notebook with no problems even in sleep mode.
I have installed my friends Dell 2Gig memory modules in my P200D and they too produce exactly the same results with post-sleep crashes.
My thoughts are that this must be another BIOS issue unless anyone can shed some light on the issue from another angle.
Please help! Many thanks in advance.

    Hi Sascha
Since you are running a Vista 32bit version, the upper limit of the memory recocnised by the machine is 3.2gb which is the maximum a 32bit operating system can address and use. The diffrence here is that I also upgraded my OS to Vista Ultimate 64bit to get yet better performance out of the 64bit dual AMD processor.
3.2gb of RAM on 32bit OS does not necessarily increase the performance. However, it keeps the performance stable when you open many more programs at the same time since the machine has more RAM to play with before staring to use the much slower hard drive as operating memory (Page File), to keep all thoes open programs running.
A 64bit OS such as Vista Ultimate 64, recognises the whole 4gb of RAM and much more (for instance, 8gb with 2 x 4gb RAM modules). The 64bit OS itself would generally consume more RAM to start with, however, with 4gb I found the general performance to be much better. Going back to the problem however, my P200D-11R with Ultimate 64 and 4gb RAM refuses to wake up from sleep mode gracefully and the graphics and sound crash every time, forcing me to restart.
My feelings at present is that eventhough your machine may be slightly different, I bet if you upgrade your OS to 64bit, the machine will start recognising all of the 4gb of RAM and post-sleep crashes will start to appear!

  • Macbook connectivity lost after waking up from sleep mode or rebooting

Being an Ex-Microsoft user , I am sad to say that Microsoft products still beats Apple's MAC in stability for certain functions.
For instance, this Macbook laptop does not seem to be able to reconnect to the home's gateway/ router (or any other gateway, for the matter) after it wakes up from sleep mode or rebooting.
I've read several similar posts on this topic in the internet and am convince to say that it is not the gateway/ router that the Mac is connected to giving the problem as there are other computers(Microsoft-based) connected to the same gateway working perfectly fine.
Furthermore the Fujitsu laptop I was using previously had connected to the gateway flawlessly... until the darn-thing broke down (grumble....grumble...)
So far, it seemingly so, that no other person has managed to figure and resolve this one out yet. Also, no Apple support staff has responded nor helped resolved other related-connectivity problems.
Is there a real hope for us??

The previous solution only worked for a few days.
I have another fix from Apple that is working (for now):
Go to the network preference pane and create a new location by using the location pull-down menu. Call it whatever you want.
Select the new location. Choose the little tool icon dropdown under the left column of services and choose "set service order" Drag things around so that airport comes first and then ethernet. Save, apply, do what you need to do to save all of these settings. Restart the computer.
There might have been some other steps, but these are the main and most important parts.
The default configuration for service order is wrong and the computer gets hung looking around for a bluetooth or firewire network connection. After every major system update, check that the service order is set right--it could get overwritten.

  • Beach ball on black screen when waking Mini from sleep

I am looking for a way to fix this frequent problem. About 25% of the time I wake this 2-year-old Mac Mini from sleep, it will show a spinning beach ball or a regular pointer on a totally black screen. The monitor connected is an Acer, by the way, and it's had multiple color calibrations done to it... Anyways, the pointer or beach ball doesn't go away if you just let it sit awhile, but it does move with mouse motion. So the only ways of getting to the login screen from there are:
hold down the power button on the computer for 10 seconds, then start it up as usual.
unplug the HDMI cord that connects to the display from the back of the computer.
    What does not work:
unplug the HDMI from the back of the display
turn the monitor off and on
    unplug and replug the monitor
pressing keyboard shortcuts to shutdown, reboot, sleep, etc. don't work.
So from this I've deduced that it has something to do with the Mac Mini recognizing the Acer display and having to refresh that port's connection.
What I've already tried that has not permanently fixed the problem:
    Reset the PRAM
Having frequent power outages counts as resetting the SMC, right?
    restarting the computer (duh)
    Doing the Apple Diagnostic test
Had Disk Utility test the hard drive (well ok its an ssd) and found no problems with it.
Help! It's not so much a problem for me but one other person who uses this computer is computer illiterate and cannot do a hard reset or figure out which cable goes where. And please, please, please do not take the easy way out and tell me to reinstall OSX (it's mavericks by the way). Thank you very much.

Humm... May have something to do with the straight HDMI connection, others have also complained about similar problems using a straight HDMI connection.
    1. You tried a different HDMI cable...? (you didn't say)
    2. What model is your Acer and what other inputs (DVI, VGA, etc.) does it support...?
I run dual DVI Samsung monitors on my Mac Mini and have not experience any problems. One is on the Apple Supplied HDMI to DVI adapter and the other in on a Kanex Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter.
No a power outage does not equal an SMC reset. If fact, it can have just the opposite effect and throw the System Management Controller off kilter.

  • HP ZBook 15 freezes after waking up from Sleep Mode

I've got a brand new HP ZBook 15. It arrived with Windows 7 and a HP Windows 8 DVD. I installed windows 8 on it immediately using the DVD and installed all drivers with the HP Support Assistant. Apart from having a lot of problems with the Ethernet, which are now partially resolved, I've got a huge issue when putting the Laptop into sleep mode and waking it up after 1-2 hours. Everything will start normal, and I can see the start screen image (the image which appears before you log in with your PW or PIN), but it will then immediatly freeze. This can only be resolved with a restart. Sometimes, even after restarting, I will be able to log in normally, but the system freezes again after reaching the desktop. I've tried talking to HP Support but they just gave me some drivers to install (i.e downgrade my drivers) which did not resolve the issue. BIOS is L70 Ver. 01.07 Does anybody know how to resolve this?

Hi BananaCode, To get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since this is a commercial product. You can do this at Commercial Forums.
    Thanks.

  • Hi, Lately many times my MBP15 shuts down a few second after waking up from sleep mode. Any ideas why? I think it happens everytime I try to open safari right away...

I think it happens everytime I try to open safari right away, but I'm not sure. After shutting down it automatically restarts and gives me a message Ÿour computer had to shut down because of a problem, press any key to restart..." and when it comes on again it gives me an option to send an error report to apple.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Yeah your Mac is having a Kernel Panic and the option to Restart the system when that happens is checked. So the system Restarts Automatically. Uncheck that option. For some unknown reason it is located in the Energy Saver applet in System Preferences.
As to the ROOT cause it could be software or hardware problems. There should be a Kernel Panic report in the console logs.
But if you do a search of these forum you'll find many that are having these restarts waking from sleep. So it would seem to be a hardware problem.

    Hi, yes, a bug...
    Resolution
Move the mouse or trackpad cursor over the center area of the login window so you can see the user icons. Click on the icon of the user that you would like to login as, type in the user's password, and press Return.
If the login window is configured to show only the name and password fields, type in the user's name and password into the fields, and press Return (even if you cannot see the rest of the login window).
    Additional Information
This issue will not occur if the display is not sleeping when the account is logged out. Use the steps below to confirm that the account is not configured to log out automatically while the display is sleeping:
Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General.  Click the padlock to unlock the preference pane and enter your admin password. Click the Advanced button at the bottom, then see if the option "Log out after N minutes of inactivity" (where N is the number of minutes) is enabled.
Open System Preferences > Energy Saver and configure Display Sleep to occur after the account is logged out, by dragging the slider to a number of minutes that is greater than N was set to in the previous step.
Important: If automatic log out is not needed, disable "Log out after Nminutes of inactivity" in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. This will also prevent the issue.

  • The mouse pointer gets frozen for a few seconds after waking up from sleep mode

I have just noticed this recently and I have updated all my software but it is annoying to have to wait like 20 secs before it responds.

Me too.  If I press the esc key, the pointer completely disappears from the screen and then reappears 20-30 seconds or more later.  Very aggravating.

  • Keyboard and Mouse unresponsive after waking up from sleep mode....

This morning my trackpad and keyboard no longer work at all. I also had a mighty mouse hooked up via bluetooth and that no longer works (the bluetooth symbol doesn't even show up.) I tried hooking up an external keyboard (i don't have a usb mouse to try though) and that didn't work either. I tried repairing permissions and that didn't help. I also did some googling and saw that people who had the same problem thought it was the ribbon cable under the battery. however when i start it up with the leopard restore disc, the trackpad works. any ideas on how to fix this?

I had the same issue with my previous-gen MBP. I had to send it in several times to have the keyboard/trackpad replaced, which helped, though did not solve the problem.
Check that you have the "Built-In Keyboard Firmware Update" and the "MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update", these items can be found in Applications > Utilities. Please note that I have since then upgraded to a new MBP, and as such, I am only telling you where I find those files on my MBP. I don't recall which of the two files I had installed to temporarily repair the issue, though I am pretty sure both apply to this situation.
Here is the link to the download for the Firmware Update. Make sure they apply to your MBP before installing. The Built-In update should have been applied if you use software update from your preferences pane.
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacBookPro_EFI_Firmware_Update_16
I hope this helps... again, I cannot be sure about this, as I no longer own the previous-gen MBP and I was never able to resolve the issue completely. good luck.
