Blank desktop/ cant shutdown

I had to force quit finder today cos a copy failed....ever since then my desktop has been blank and the top bar is pretty much all missing and i cant shutdown or restart my comp. i tried making a new user account but that wouldnt work either. i was taking my comp into an apple store for a different problem but now this came up...will it matter if i havent resolved this problem when i give it to them.....it is under warrenty so im assuming they can just fix everything wrong with this comp.

First of all, welcome to the discussions!!
If you haven't been able to restart your iBook at all, then you may want to try a hard reset. Push and hold the power button on your iBook until it shuts off. Then, boot back up and see if your problem is resolved.
If it isn't, then boot up from your Mac OS X Install Disc and repair permissions and the disk.
To do this, insert the disc whilst you still can, and then hold down the C key while booting up. Wait for it to load and then select your languge. From the menus at the top of the screen you should be able to choose Disk Utility (I forget which menu it is from sorry), select your hard drive, and then choose Repair Permissions and Repair Disk.
If this doesn't sort your problem, let the genius have a look at it. It may even be easier for him to do it altogether.

CAnt Shutdown or Reboot my Air

hi folks,
i recently got an (already used) macbook air and i have quite some trouble with the tiny one:
-i cant shutdown the air like my other macs-the display remains black, the computer starts working, but if i close the display, the lid is lighting permanently. when i try to restart it with a simple pressing on the power button, nothing happens. it just boots again, when i hold it down for at least 5 secs and then restart the whole thing.
-same thing when i try to reboot the machine.
has anyone else occured those symptoms on an air? has anybody a idea how to fix that?
i would be so thankful, as i really loose my nerves with that thing...

Not sure if its the same, but I've had the same problem where I can't shutdown using either the power button or the menu - it says its shutting down but it doesn't.
My solution was to open the Console app and type:
su - <admin name> (you might already be an administrator, I'm not)
shutdown -r now
This worked - so nothing wrong with the unix underneath but something to do with a process blocking the UI?

Mail Removes Open Emails From Desktop On Shutdown

I like to open Mail emails onto my desktop to remind me that they need to be replied to. But beginning awhile back, maybe around Mtn Lion or so, they randomly get removed from my desktop upon shutdown or startup. This has complicated my organizational system for keeping my communications in order. This is on my iMac 27, i7, 2.8 GHz, 8 GB. Running OSX 10.9.4, Mail 7.3. This has been happening for awhile now and still is so I don't think it is specific to current hardware of software. I haven't tried any specific fixes for this as I don't know where to begin. Over this same time I have replaced the OS and Clean Installed everything, for other reasons, yet still the issue persists. Is anyone else having a similar problem? I would really love to find a fix for this, any suggestions.

This is a POP account, right? What are your Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove copy from server settings?

Oraclevm 3.0.2 cant shutdown Virtual Machines by cmd

i am new to virtuallization , i try to install oraclevm 3.0.2 on my testing server as below
hp proliant g5 x 2 --> oracle vm server 3.0.2 hostname vm01 & vm02 ( x64 ) only pvm
hp proliant g5 x1 --> oracle vm manager 3.0.2 hostname vmmanager ( running on rhel 5.5 x64 )
hp proliant dl145 g3 x1 --> oracle vm server 3.0.2 hostname vm03 (x64 ) this server support hvm
i able to install oracle vm server on vm01-03 , vm manager on vmmanager , my problem as below:
1. i cant shutdown or poweroff by cmd (poweroff , shutdown -h now ) under Virtual Machines ( rhel 5.5 and rhel 6.0 x64) . the Virtual Machines keep on restart on same vmserver (vm01) , but i able to shutdown by oracle vm manager stop button . is this normal or i need to configure some thing to make the shuwdown or poweroff cmd work on Virtual Machines ?
2. i try to install solaris 10 u9 x86 on hp proliant dl145 g3 ( hvm ) but i have a error popup as below , i able install solaris 10 u9 x86 on same server withou error at oracle vm server 3.0.1

This is because the HA system doesn't know you issues a powerff/shutdown command. It just sees the guest disappear, so it restarts it.

BLANK DESKTOP APP I AM SICK OF IT HAPPENING

Is it just me? but I am sick of getting the blank desktop app. I have done the C:\user\appdata\local\adobe OOBE folder to OOBE.oid and it worked for a few weeks. Then out of the blue it's blank again. I have seen that C:\programfiles(x86)\common files adobe OOBE changed to OOBE_OLD is what you need to do to fix it? That is not working? What is the one to use? I am on window 7 64-bit, I wish I could call support but can't find a flipping number a 1-800 # sure would be nice so I can talk to a human over the flipping phone. I have a bat and I am so frustrated right and would like just to smash my computer right now. WHY CAN"T ADOBE FIX THIS I HAVE SEEN A TONE OF PEOPLE GETTING THIS BLANK APP CRAP ON THE FORUMS. IT SURE WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE A 1-800 NUMBER TO CALL. CAN THEY NOT AFFORD THIS WITH ALL THE MILLLIONS OF DOLLARS THEY HAVE?????????????? THEY MITE HAVE A NUMBER YOU CAN CALL BUT IT"S SURE IS FLIPPING HARD TO FIND IF THEY DO.

I am so glad I am not the only one that thinks this. I am sure because I fell this way they are not going to help me get it fixed. I have seen people from like a year few years back having the issue. There product is awesome when it's working but they needed to get this fixed.

Old MacBook just sits on blank desktop background

My mom has an early 2000 model MacBook that was going strong until a few days ago. It will let her log in, but then just sits on the blank desktop background. Nothing else comes up. The original startup disk is long gone. She needs a new battery and has to have it plugged in to use it. I am not sure if that would have anything to do with it. Any ideas of what to do?

2000? It's an iBook, probably a G4.
You could try Resetting the PRAM
Unfortunately, without the original install discs, there's no way to repair the startup disk if necessary.
I have removed the battery from my iBook G4 and it still runs fine.

HDMI/Mini port connect to TV = stays on blank (only background) desktop screen? I have to drag stuff from my laptop to blank desktop screen?

I hope this makes sense. The simplest way I can describe it is…it's as if the TV I am connecting it to recognizes it as another desktop entirely. Sort of like how you drag stuff against multiple screens on your laptop. Only…the TV is just a blank desktop screen (just the background) and no actual icons. In other words, my programs, my finder, all that stuff I have to drag over using my laptop. Is there a way to just display what my laptop displays rather than dragging everything over one by one just to be able to see it on my TV?
I'm using a mini port plugged into HDMI plugged into TV.

Getting a Blank Desktop Screen when Booting up

After my install of SL, I'm getting a blank desktop screen when it starts up. Every once in a while I'll get the log on screen, but when I try to log on it gives me the spinning ball of death.
I can boot my laptop with safe mode, but thats about it.

I just reran the install process by holding Option at startup and it worked.

No error message on itunes store but page just goes blank! cant purchase!

I've had itunes forever and withing last few weeks when i log onto itunes store the home page is visible for a second then just goes blank! no error message for trouble shooting, my i pod syncs and i can play from library but i can't figure out what has happenend. my pops ups are allowed but that wasn't it? any ideas???? appreciate anything???

Apple's App Store and iTunes Store Currently Experiencing Connectivity Issues
It appears that Apple's App Store and iTunes Store are both currently experiencing connectivity issues. The issue seems to be persistent across iOS and Desktop machines as well as the Apple TV. Attempts to access different parts of the store will either throw a "Cannot connect to App Store" message or "The item you've requested is not currently available in the U.S. store."
This issue does seem to be isolated, so some users may not be experiencing connectivity problems. Most reports on Twitter seem to be focused around the Featured Section and Top Charts.
Trying to purchase some songs, books and movies also throws an error. Interestingly enough, the Apple System Status page reports no issues. Earlier today, some users had troubles downloading the Skype update, but users found deleting the app then downloading it resolved any issues.

Blank Desktop Icons in Windows 8

I posted this in the Microsoft Windows 8 forum and was directed to post here instead.
We did look for answers before posting, but our specific issue is different than what others have had regarding "blank icons."
After updating our workstations to Windows 8, icons located on a network drive (e.g., in the "W:\ICONS" folder, where drive W is mapped to a shared folder on a server) are displayed as a blank document-- a solid white rectangle with the upper right corner
folded down.
However, icons located on the workstations' local C drives are displayed correctly-- and if we copy the icons from the server to the workstation they display correctly.
If we go to the shortcut properties and click "change icon," the correct location on the mapped network drive is already listed and the desired icon is already displayed and selected in the window, but re-selecting the icon and applying the
change does nothing-- the desktop shortcut still displays with a "blank document" icon.
We've tried the suggested solution of turning off Windows Explorer, deleting the local icon cache, and rebooting to force Windows to rebuild the icon cache, but it doesn't help either.
The desktop shortcuts work just fine, they are just not displayed with the desired icons.
By the way, the servers are running Windows Server 2008 R2 (if that matters).

Let me ask this a different way. Can someone try the following and tell me what result you get for Step 5?
Given: A workstation running Windows 8, joined to a domain on a network.
Given: A server (Active Directory Domain Controller) running Windows Server 2008 R2. (Not sure the server's OS matters; it's Windows 8 that matters.)
Step 1: Create a dummy text file (or other dummy file) on the Windows 8 workstation.
Step 2: Create a shortcut to the dummy text file on the Windows 8 desktop.
Step 3: Edit the shortcut's properties and change the icon, selecting some icon file (e.g., WHATEVER.ICO) located on the Windows 8 workstation.
My Result: The icon displays correctly on the desktop shortcut.
Step 4: Now copy the icon file and paste it somewhere on the server.
Step 5: Change the shortcut's properties to look for the icon on the server where you copied it to.
My Result: The icon displays correctly in the shortcut properties window, but once I apply the change the desktop shortcut displays a "blank document" icon.
Note: The type of file the shortcut points to is unimportant-- you can try it with a TXT, DAT, EXE, COM, or any other type of file. The issue is with the shortcut's icon, not the shortcut's target.
Interesting Aside: If you change the shortcut so the target is the ICO file itself, the icon is displayed correctly.

Blank desktop but dock works

My friend used my computer while I was on a trip, and when I came back my desktop was completely blank-- not even a hard drive icon. My friend has no idea how it happened. All the stuff that was on the desktop is in the finder window and the dock works, but I can't put a picture on the desktop or get a screensaver to work. What can I do?

Whenever a "window display" problem arises (the Desktop is a giant window), the list of "usual suspects" includes a corrupt Finder preference file, and so deleting it has become almost a routine thing to try. A new "default" preference file is re-created when the Finder next restarts.
In this particular case I was more confident than usual that this would work, because disabling the Desktop display is a known Finder option - you can choose to do this electively. The Finder is capable of more options than the familiar ones that you set via Finder Menu>Preferences. The free utility [TinkerTool|http://www.bresink.com/osx/TinkerTool.html] includes a number of such "extra" Finder preference options, including an option to "Disable Desktop features" which electively produces the same effect that you were seeing. I knew that this TinkerTool feature works by modifying the com.apple.finder.plist file, and so deleting this file seemed likely to fix the problem.
Since there is no reason to think that your friend deliberately disabled the Desktop though, I assume that the Finder preference file just got corrupted somehow, with no better explanation than "it happens!"
At any rate, I'm glad it is fixed.

T60 won't resume windows xp properly after standby and hibernation - shows only blank desktop

I've got aT60 195CTO which is still just in warrantee that when I hibernate or standby the laptop and when i resume it'll ask for a password after the normal wait but then it'll just sit there show desktop background with no icons etc and periodically show hardrive activity but nothing happens, the touch pad pointer works ok but nothing else, even ctrl alt del failed to do anything, have downloaded and installed all xp updates inc sp3 as well as thinkvantage updates everytime this happens i'm forced to shut down computer by holding power button and restarting this is very annoying and always has the possibility of loosing work.
There appears to be two power management schemes in operation?, one running under xp and the other under thinkvantage - not sure if there is a conflict here? I have tried going into hibernation by closing the lid, fn-F12, xp's shutdown menu and entering hibernation from the thinkvantage menu all with same final result.
I have found a number of other postings on the net about this same problem but but apart from reloading the os which failed to solve the problem no other advice appears to be available.
would really appreciate any advice from anyone who knows how to solve this problem.

No Not really had some success though completely uninstalled graphics card software and reloaded new software also found out that it was the XP wireless software was doing something when connected to my school network so quick fix was turn wireless off then log into computer then turn wireless back on to resolve this cause I always forgot to turn it off I set up the lenovo wireless manager this worked and will only periodically do it (though I never really turn my computer off unless upgrading etc and sometimes it clogs up) another problem with mine was the battery could have been a issue cause I never turned it off and let it discharge (I wouldn't t recommend doing that unless battery is in warranty) first time I did discharge it it would not recharge so I may have had a faulty battery heard about the non-rechargeable coin battery maybe another member could confirm that? This could have been contributing to the issue
Hopes this gives u a variety of solutions to try help desk at lenovo had no idea when I told them about it and couldn't do much but tell me to update bios if it continues I suggest u ask it to be looked at and before warranty expires

Exchange Mail will not Send mail from Iphone when Desktop computer Shutdown

A client of mine has an Iphone that I have setup to connect to his Microsoft Exchange 2003 Server using Activesync. Everything works fine and dandy until he shutdown his desktop in his office. Than he is no longer able to send any mail from his Iphone but is able to receive it no problem. Anyone have any insight on this problem?

Your problem is with Cox and Cox not having an authenticated SMTP server.
Not many ISPs provide an authenticated SMTP server and I'm not sure why - especially with laptops and devices such as the iPhone so popular.
I'm a Time Warner/RoadRunner customer for cable and internet access and I quit using my RR email account several years ago for this very reason. I switched to using my .Mac account as my primary personal email account which has an authenticated SMTP server. I'm able to send messages with the account regardless the internet service provider used for internet access. My business POP account also has an authenticated SMTP server and no problems sending with this account either - via a number of different Wi-Fi connections and EDGE.
I suggest seriously considering switching to another email account. A Gmail account is free, can be accessed as a POP or IMAP account with the email client on your computer as well as with the iPhone's email client, has a good spam filter at the incoming mail server, and has an authenticated SMTP server.
If you ever move or decide to change your ISP from Cox to a different ISP, your email account and address will not need to change. You can access and send messages with a Gmail account with any ISP - the same with a .Mac account. And you'll have much more server storage space than Cox provides.
