Blank desktop in Finder

my iBook starts up -- can see the dock but the spinning beachball doesn't go away but, aside from the dock, there desktop is clear background blue. i can't see or access any files -- drives, storage devices, etc. i can open applications on the dock, though.
i've kept up with all the updates.
what's going on? how do i get my Finder back?

is that...
a) expensive?
Expense is relative. What's expensive to one person seems reasonable to another, so that depends on your circumstances.
Hard drive upgrade services:
MacService
DT & T Computer Services
MCE Technologies
b) something i can do
It's not easy to do it yourself, but, again, that depends on you, and how skilled you are with disassembling and reassembling things. Here are links to online instructions:
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/50.12.0.html
http://www.powerbooktech.com/knowledge,name-Hard-Drive,type-6.htm
You need a 2.5-inch diameter, 9.5 mm high (SuperSlim) IDE/ATA hard drive, like those found here:

Good luck!

To make sure that all required media is in the library contain the project you need to "Consolidate media"  see:  http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov882dee351
You can then copy the library to your laptop with the Finder and open it with the same version of iMovie.  The last phrase is important since Apple has made changes in the project format several times even between minor updates of iMovie 10.  Earlier versions may not be able to read the library and later versions (not possible in this case) may cause the project to be updated so that it is no longer readable by the desktop version.   iMovie on the laptop will not at first find the copied library - you will have either to double click on it or File - Open library - Other and navigate to its location.

  • BLANK DESKTOP APP I AM SICK OF IT HAPPENING

Is it just me? but I am sick of getting the blank desktop app. I have done the C:\user\appdata\local\adobe OOBE folder to OOBE.oid and it worked for a few weeks. Then out of the blue it's blank again. I have seen that C:\programfiles(x86)\common files adobe OOBE changed to OOBE_OLD is what you need to do to fix it? That is not working? What is the one to use? I am on window 7 64-bit, I wish I could call support but can't find a flipping number a 1-800 # sure would be nice so I can talk to a human over the flipping phone. I have a bat and I am so frustrated right and would like just to smash my computer right now. WHY CAN"T ADOBE FIX THIS I HAVE SEEN A TONE OF PEOPLE GETTING THIS BLANK APP CRAP ON THE FORUMS. IT SURE WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE A 1-800 NUMBER TO CALL. CAN THEY NOT AFFORD THIS WITH ALL THE MILLLIONS OF DOLLARS THEY HAVE?????????????? THEY MITE HAVE A NUMBER YOU CAN CALL BUT IT"S SURE IS FLIPPING HARD TO FIND IF THEY DO.

I am so glad I am not the only one that thinks this. I am sure because I fell this way they are not going to help me get it fixed. I have seen people from like a year few years back having the issue. There product is awesome when it's working but they needed to get this fixed.

  • HDMI/Mini port connect to TV = stays on blank (only background) desktop screen? I have to drag stuff from my laptop to blank desktop screen?

I hope this makes sense. The simplest way I can describe it is…it's as if the TV I am connecting it to recognizes it as another desktop entirely. Sort of like how you drag stuff against multiple screens on your laptop. Only…the TV is just a blank desktop screen (just the background) and no actual icons. In other words, my programs, my finder, all that stuff I have to drag over using my laptop. Is there a way to just display what my laptop displays rather than dragging everything over one by one just to be able to see it on my TV?
I'm using a mini port plugged into HDMI plugged into TV.
    Thanks!

    Using Macbook pro as well.

  • Can't move anything on desktop or finder etc.

Problem: I can't move files from desktop to finder window. Can't rearrange items in finder window. Can move items to trash using keyboard but not trackball. Can't remove icons from dock; and can't change desktop picture. When I try to change desktop picture, the new picture shows up on the little screen; but the desktop picture does not change. I thought it might be something wrong with the trackball, but I can open applications, connect to internet etc.

Hi Sue, if you can navigate in Finder do this:
navigate to yourhome/library/preferences and trash these two files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
com.apple.sidebarlists.plist (if this exists in 10.2 - not sure)
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)
Then log out and back in again. Or restart.
    Good luck, let us know.

  • Can't Open Video Files from Desktop or Finder

    Hello,
I am faced with the current error. Whenever I try to open a video file (such as MP4) from the desktop or Finder by double-clicking it, I am faced with the following error:
However, when I open the file directly via Open File in Quicktime Player, I am able to play the video file.
Does anyone know a solution to this problem?

Nope. For example, one folder has two xls workbooks, two Word docs and a pdf. Only one of the xls workbooks won't open. All the other files open normally. When I try to open the problem xls workbook, whether from the dock or the Finder window, I end up in Excel, but without the workbook opening. When I quit Excel, the problem workbook started Excel, but didn't open.
Update - I'm seeing something now. I use Excel to build "shows," I'm a production mixer for television. I went to one folder, five xls workbooks open fine, four do not. The four that don't open were modified (Save As with changes) with each "show." This was the first pattern I've noticed and only because that particular subfolder had the four workbooks with that relationship. The other xls workbook I described has the Save As file in another folder, but I'm not sure what the original file was. Note - those two "corrupt" files are unrelated, they had different "parents."
What could I look for in the original file that won't open and passed that gene onto its spawn?

    Hi robfromkinglake west,
Try and isolate the issue.  Check if it's only with this drive.
Check the drive with Disk Utility

  • Help  with Desktop in Finder

When I had been in any program, I could click on "Finder" and then select "Desktop" and was able to view it. Now, when I try to do that, I get a message "There is no application set to open the document “Desktop”. Search the App Store for an application that can open this document, or choose an existing application on your computer." It has selections to "Choose Application", "Cancel", "Search App Store"!
I can't even select "Desktop" in "Finder" from Photoshop to open jpgs on the desktop for editing!!
What can I do to restore access to "Desktop" in "Finder"?
I would appreciate your help and suggestions.
    Thanks.
    Vernon

It sounds like the Desktop folder's "bundle bit" may have become set, making it behave like a "package" instead of a folder.
You can try to fix it with Terminal, but the needed SetFile command normally requires a prior installation of Xcode Tools. Instead, I would try the following:
Download [Path Finder|http://www.cocoatech.com], which has a 30-day free trial period. Navigate to the Desktop folder from within Path Finder, select it, then File Menu>Get Info. If the "Bundle bit" box is checked, uncheck it:

  • Can't access files on my desktop through finder - everything greyed out.

On my home iMac whenever I navigate to my desktop through finder everything is greyed out with a little grey ring next to it. Its only an issue for navigating to the files through finder.

Boot into your recovery partition (restart, hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and use Disk Utility to repair your hard drive. Repair permissions too while you're there. OS X: About OS X Recovery

    I accidentally deleted desktop from finder...HELP !!!

Where did you actually delete it from? If you deleted it from the sidebar (see image)
then you can easily add it by dragging the Desktop folder from within your home folder to this location.

  • Old MacBook just sits on blank desktop background

My mom has an early 2000 model MacBook that was going strong until a few days ago.  It will let her log in, but then just sits on the blank desktop background.  Nothing else comes up.  The original startup disk is long gone.  She needs a new battery and has to have it plugged in to use it.  I am not sure if that would have anything to do with it.  Any ideas of what to do?

    2000? It's an iBook, probably a G4.
You could try Resetting the PRAM
Unfortunately, without the original install discs, there's no way to repair the startup disk if necessary.
I have removed the battery from my iBook G4 and it still runs fine.

  • Cannot create new folders on desktop. Cannot drag new items onto desktop. Desktop in Finder opens with Terminal. Not sure if this has anything to do with upgrading to Mavericks but I need help if anyone has ideas. Thank you.

I can no longer create new folders on my desktop. The option to do that is now light gray on the drop down menu and can't be selected.
I cannot drag new items onto desktop any longer either.
The Desktop in Finder opens with Terminal.
Folders and items on Desktop open and work normally.
Not sure if this has anything to do with upgrading to Mavericks but I need help if anyone has ideas.
    Thank you.

Take these steps if the cursor changes from an arrow to a white "prohibited" symbol when you try to move an icon on the Desktop.
Sometimes the problem may be solved just by logging out or rebooting. Try that first, if you haven't already done it. Otherwise, continue.
Select the icon of your home folder (a house) in the sidebar of a Finder window and open it. The Desktop folder is one of the subfolders. Select it and open the Info window. In the General section of the window, the Kind will be either Folder  or something else, such as Anything.
If the Kind is Folder, uncheck the box marked Locked. Close the Info window and test.
If the Kind is not Folder, make sure the Locked box is not checked and that you have Read & Write privileges in the  Sharing & Permissions section. Then close the Info window and do as follows.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    xattr -d com.apple.FinderInfo Desktop
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You should get a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”). Quit Terminal.
    Relaunch the Finder.
If the problem is now resolved, and if you use iPhoto, continue.
Quit iPhoto if it's running. Launch it while holding down the option key. It will prompt you to select a library. Choose the one you want to use (not the Desktop folder.)

  • Click on Desktop Activates Finder

The subject is the default behavior, but I'd like to turn it off. Is there any way to disable a click on the desktop activating Finder?
My problem is that I have a dual-screen setup, and ocassionally when an app is on the right screen I'll mouse over to the menu (on the left screen), but miss the menubar, and hit the desktop, which deactivates my current app, and activates finder. Then I either have to bring the mouse all the way back over to the right to re-activate, or use the keyboard to cmd-tab.
Obviously not a huge deal, just a bit of an inconvenience.
A totally unrelated question, is there a way to get the disk usage of multiple folders, say by selecting them in finder? Currently multiple selections will bring up info panels on each item in the selection, but is there any way to combine them into one disk use total and one info panel (similar to how itunes aggregates multiple selections)?

    Robert,
Oh boy, you'll have to pay me double for this answer..... ;-D
First of all, your Desktop is part of the Finder. Or rather, its existence is completely due to the Finder. At any rate, the answer is NO, you cannot separate the Finder from your Desktop. I have a permanent extended Desktop setup running on one of my systems, too, and what you describe is just one factor that comes with the (expanded, so to speak) territory.
But now we get to the real "juice" of my reply!!! Did you know that there are two "modes" for the Getinfo window? There is the standard "Info" mode, and then there is the "Inspector" mode. Obviously, you are familar with the first. The second, "Inspector" mode is accessed by pressing Option-Apple-I. In this mode, the single Getinfo window will update to show the info from whatever folder you have selected; select a different folder, and the new folder's info will be shown.
OK, so open the "Inspector" for a single folder. Good. Now, click on some other folder, and watch the info change. Do you see where this is going?
WIth that same Inspector window open, and some folder selected, Shift-Click on a second folder to add it to your selection. BINGO!
Yeah, I know; "The check is in the mail."

  • OSX now crashes every hour. OSX apps like Dock, desktops, launchpad, finder, toolbar, etc become unresponsive, although sometimes non OSX apps (like Chrome, TextMate, etc) remain functioning briefly. No obvious reason or trigger

OSX now crashes every hour. For no obvious reason or trigger, suddenly OSX apps like Dock, desktops, launchpad, finder, toolbar, etc become unresponsive, although sometimes non OSX apps (like Chrome, TextMate, etc) remain functioning briefly, before the whole thing hangs and needs a hard reboot.
It is not apparent what I do to provoke the crash -- it happens while I am in seemingly any application, sometimes just reading a page and not taking any actions.
This started happening very suddenly two days ago. It might have happened around the time I updated ITunes but I'm not sure of this at all. And I never use ITunes or have it open.
Don't know how to diagnose the problem since nothing is accessible whence it freezes up on me.  I tried software update, but problem continued after. Would appreciate troubleshooting advice. Thanks!
    best,
    gene

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
