Blank DVD ejects itself when inserted

I'm trying to upgrade my computer, so I inserted a blank DVD to back up my data... But all it does it go in, make bit of noise for about 5 seconds and then eject itself. I get no message on the screen about a problem... am I using the wrong DVD or something? My brother got it.... sigh it says: "DVD +R 1-16x speed 4.7GB"
haha i really dont know what that means, but anyway, if anyone has any idea how to solve the problem please reply....
thanks...

nikkiiiii,
A couple of questions here might help narrow down the problem.
What eMac model exactly do you have? Is it a cd-rom or combo or superdrive? I assume it is a superdrive in that you are trying to burn a dvd but I ask as some users think that a combo or cd-rom drive can burn to dvd disks.
Also, have you ever been able to burn dvds on this eMac before?
Have you tried inserting the disk multiple times and it keeps getting ejected?
Sometimes, when drives are going bad or are dirty, they will take multiple times to actually recognize the disk.
Also, how much free disk space do you have on your HD? You can find this by doing a Get Info from the File menu once you have selected the HD once by clicking on it.

my dvd player ejects disc when inserted on my macbook pro running on 10.8.4 OS X

Sounds like it could be a problem with your DVD drive. Usually it would be a problem with the lens. Since as far as I can tell it is ejecting discs right away, the usual fix of a cleaning disc is not possible.
If it is a slot loader like the offical Apple SuperDrive, you may be able to try a crude clean with the Wii Lens Cleaning Kit, although designed for the Nintendo Wii, it should work to a degree with other slot loaders.
Due to the design of the cleaner, it should remain in the drive until it is time to remove it. Though usually a dirty lens will still read some discs.
However, if the lens is sufficiently clean then the only other possibilities are a calibration problem or a hardware failure.
Certain lower quality drives can deviate from optimal calibration of the read laser over time, though with some drives it is possible to fix this, the fix has the potential to do more harm than good.
If it's a hardware failure, whether it can be fixed depends upon the type of fault, but new external drives are cheaper than most repair costs these days.
I'm not 100% familar with how OS X handles Disc drives, so I can't rule out the possibility of a software issue.

hello everyone i am trying to Burn A DVD Disc That when inserted appears as Three separate discs such as if it had been partitioned but disk utillity.app can only partion a disc once.
I have a SuperDrive and have used it before so i know it works and that i have one.
If anyone has an idea as to how i may do this i would really appreciate any help you have.

You dvd has been written in sessions (three in this case).
You can copy all the data from the original DVD into one folder and burn the folder onto another DVD.
Do you want to make your life harder? Do the following: start Disk Utility (inside /Applications/Utilities) and click on the new image icon on top left. Pick a name for the image and specify the size (4.7 or 8.0 GB depending on the size of the original DVD as well as the rest of parameters from the drop down menus: encryption-none, format-read/write. Save the image and expand it (open it). Coppy all the required data inside it and burn it.

  • Blank dvds eject and no icon after installing mavericks

I have a late 2008 (aluminum) 13 inch Macbook and recently installed the new OSX Mavericks. I wanted to put some pics onto a dvd. Inserting a new blank DVD (tried more than one DVD), the internal drive sounds like it is trying to play/open the DVD ( no icon shows on desktop) ,then a window pops up asking for password. After putting in password, hit ENTER. The DVD ejects immediately. Looked into -System Preference - CD/DVD check settings nothing corrects problem. When I put a pre-recorded DVD (movie) Icon comes up and it will play the movie.
    Does anyone have any suggestions\
    Thanks DJ

    Hi,
Insert a blank CD and boot up your Mac. When it boots to the Desktop, drag that CD icon to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.

  • USB key ejecting itself when transferring large files

I have a LG 16G USB key formatted in MacOS extended (journaled), I've been encountering a particular issue when I try to transfer files taken on another computer and copying them from the key to my Macbook pro ( OSX 10.6.2). after it start transferring it ejects itself with the "the disk was not ejected properly" message, then reappears right away in the finder...
the problem doesn't present itself when I copy a file from my macbook pro to the key, and then try transferring it back to my computer. and I've tried this with both small files (under 200mb) and large files (over 4G).
I've also noticed the transfer rate is very slow when this happens.
so far the problem only presents itself when I transfer files from one of the MacPro's in my university's studios, but since I work a lot on these machine, this is becoming quite a problem. I don't have the complete specs of these machines, they all run on Leopard, probably 10.5.something. not SL... perhaps that's the problem?
I've seen similar post on the forum concerning this issue with TimeMachine backup drives, suggesting it had something to do with the sleep preferences, however I've tried all the potential solutions from these post and the problem persists.
So far the only solution I've found has been to transfer the files to my girlfriend's macbook (running on tiger), and then transferring the files in target mode from her computer to mine... quite inconvenient...
I have a feeling this might be due to the formatting of my key, I have a 2G USB key formatted in MS-DOS (FAT32) and have had no problems with it so far. The reason I formatted in Mac OS extended is simple, I work in the video field and with HD I find myself often moving around single files larger then 4GB, which I've come to understand isn't possible in FAT 32.
I'd like to know how to resolve this, and especially like to know if it is indeed a format issue, since I'm soon going to acquire a new external hard drive for the sole purpose of storing my increasing large media files and would like to know how to format it.

    Hi,
I have an external USB Card reader (indeed - two different readers), which have the same problems with self-ejecting disks. Every transfer of data from SD card from my camera is the pain now. There is many different themes related to the self-"the disk was not ejected properly" situation, but no working solution now.

  • No CD or DVD on Display When Inserted

I have no icon on screen when a DVD or CD is inserted in my Mac Book Pro. Are there settings I can check to verify if its machine related or software issue.
    Thanks

I just checked those preferences, and they don't give an option for displaying them. Mine used to all show on the desktop when inserted, but now they are only shown on the finder window. I know I must have changed something, but can't figure out how to change it back.

  • Blank DVD ejects

    Hi all
I've just recently developed problems burning DVD-Rs. When I insert a black disk the drive attempts to spin up about 8 times and then spits the blank disk back out. I've read the posts about using a cleaning disk and am willing to do so, however I am extremely skeptical. Here's why: I have an old AL 12" laptop and after a year of using it the CD/DVD drive crapped out. I replaced it with an aftermarket drive. It worked for a few months and then stopped working again(with a disk stuck). A few months later I did a software update and low and behold the drive started working again. It still works today a few years later. What I eventually figured out is that I'd done a system update which caused the drive to stop working. Fast-forward to now, my drive mysteriously stops writing, still reads fine. I've just recently updated with software update. gotta say I suspect a bug. Apple?

This is a user forum and as such Apple does not answer any questions or respond in the forum. Just users like yourself. Have you tried a variety of DVD's with what results? i would take it to the genius at the Apple store and have him check out the drive.

  • DVD ejects itself

I have burned 2 projects using iDVD on the SAME type of disc (Sony DVD-R 120min/4.7GB 16X/1X) and both have worked on my DVD player (not on my Mac - I have a Mac OS X Tiger). I tried to burn one of those projects onto a Maxell DVD-R but it didn't work. Now I have another project to burn and first I tried a FujiFilm DVD-R 120min/4.7GB 16X/1X but it wouldn't work just like the Maxell didn't work. It seems to burn onto it...but doesn't actually say that it is completely finished - it says it does but the box won't disappear and the only option is cancel. Then my DVD player says its not a readable disc. I tried the Sony DVD again and it won't even read it. It ejects the disc without reading it at all...HELP!!!! I don't understand what is wrong with it.... I have iDVD6 6.0.4

    Hi
There can be so many things. Bad pref file to dust on laser lens.
So I send a list on how-to get better DVDs. May be You find something that
    is relevant to You.
    1. iDVD 6 has two levels of qualities.
    • Best Quality (movies up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than - se below
    • Best Performances (movies less than 60 min.) - Highest quality on final DVD
    in iDVD’08 there is even a Pro-Quality (120 min.) - very good.
    2. From FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov
iMovie - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
    when the movie includes photos.
Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    3. I use Toast™ to make an as *slow burn as possibly eg x1* (in iDVD’08 this can also be set)
    4. There has to be about or *more than 25Gb free space* on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc).
    5. Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. DVD-R (I don't use DVD+R or +/-RW)
    7. NTSC iMovie projects - to - NTSC iDVD projects - resp
PAL iMovie projects - to - PAL iDVD projects
    Also to concider

  • Western Digital USB3 external hard drive (attached to new MBP Retina) seems to randomly "eject" itself when I'm trying to back it up via time machine. When this happens, I can't even shut my machine down properly. Ideas?

The backup process will run for sometimes 30 minutes or more. But, it's as if, at some point, the drive just can't be found. I get the message "this drive was ejected improperly". When this happens: my machine won't shut down, disk utility won't run. I have to press and hold the power button to force a shut down. Any ideas what's going on here? A MBP Retina issue? A USB3 issue? A western digital issue (although this drive has been functioning fine on old MBP)?
    Thanks!

When you say that you've applied the latest 'patch,' I'm assuming that you mean the latest (July 18) software update for mid-2012 models? It was supposed to address some of the problems with the USB 3.0 ports. I don't think that, in most cases, it's a problem with the drives themselves (USB 2 or 3), rather it seems to be a port problem.
If it wasn't fixed for you using the July 18 Software Update the only thing I can recommend at this point is to see if Mountain Lion - soon to be released - will be able to fix the problems. If not, I would take your unit back to the Apple Store and let them know that you are continuing to have problems with the USB 3.0 ports. They may offer to switch out your logic board, etc.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • CD drive keeps ejecting disks when inserted

i have macbook running leopard. whenever I insert any optical disk, my mac simply ejects it. I don't think its a software problem because it ejected them during startup too (I inserted one during startup). Any help is highly appreciated.

Try creating a new account and set your computer either to not auto login or to log in automatically to the new account. Turn the computer off, wait at least 10 seconds, then restart. If it still spits the disk out I'd recommend contacting Apple. If it doesn't, and the disk mounts, you know there's an issue with your account.

  • Blank DVD+R won't mount, always ejects

After installing Leopard, any blank DVD+R that I insert won't mount, it makes noises and always ejects -
    yet
    1. I can read the Mac OSX Leopard DVD and have installed it.
    2. Blank CDs mount and can be burned. And they play as well.
This appears to be happening only after installing Leopard. Help, anyone!!

The specs for this drive are hard to find, but this came up with some Google searching:
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-835E:
    Firmware Revision: GAN7
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
    Media: No
This would indicate that this drive does not support double-layer (DL) DVDs. You can confirm this by checking the specs for yours in System Profiler.

  • What is the Keyboard shortcut to stop autoplay when inserting DVD

I've looked but can't find the keyboard shortcut to stop a cd/dvd from autoplaying when inserted. Can anyone help?
    Thanks!
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi Adan
I don't know about a keyboard shortcut, but if it is the default behaviour of the system you want to change when inserting a disc you can change it in System Preferences > CDs & DVDs.

  • My iPod is ejecting itself almost as soon as i connect it.

When connected, my third generation Nano briefly connects, but then ejects itself when plugged into my computer. The following text box appears:
"An iPod has been detected, but could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again."
    Any help???

Hey there - yup huge problem - I actually made some comments a while back and my apple user a/c got disabled 4 security reasons (maybe because my user was fixmyipod!) Anyway, had same prob for AGES, even took it to the apple retail store and they checked it - fine (they did reformat it for PC for me so this might also help y'all) and said it was our computer. Tried all the tricks - 5R's, latest version of Itunes etc - it worked fine on Mac's and some PC's but not ours. Saw a hotfix from another discussion thread which apparently worked for them, but didn't work for me because my version of Windows (XP Pro Service Pack 3) apparently already has that hotfix installed. Even found something on the Windows help website (sorry can't recall it was a while ago but sure you'll find it if you search a little) which suggested very CAREFULLY deleting some keys of some type (can't remember - I'm no expert on these things just followed instructions) - I tried this also but still the ipod would read for 1 second, then disconnect.
So...after much research, banging of head against brick wall etc, my husband who is also no real tech head at all, went into My Computer > Properties > etc until he got to Device Manager, and then he checked everything methodically and found that one of the USB controllers had a problem, he can't remember exactly what he did but voila (i think perhaps enable? or troubleshoot?) - next thing the ipod works absolutely fine now and it's as though the last few months of frustration never happened.
I personally think that lots of people are having this problem for a variety of reasons - our ipod was first used on a Mac, and when I first used it on our PC it asked me if I wanted to format it which I didn't, so I ejected it using the "Safely Remove Hardware" thingy at the bottom right of screen and from then on wouldn't work. I've read others who've got a new cable or used a different USB and it worked fine. It seems like you just have to try everything under the sun until you find what is gonna fix yours - hope this may bring at least 1 other person some help with what I know is frustration to the hilt!
