Blank DVD not recognized, blank CDs ok

Every time I insert a blank DVD it gets spit out after about a minute. Blank CDs work fine and can be mounted in the Finder and burned. I've tried swapping out the Superdrive and get the same results. Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks Ian. I had not considered the media itself being an issue since I've had successful burns with this pack of DVD-Rs before. But it turns out these DVD-Rs (TDK) won't burn on any of my Macs now. I tried them on a Mac Pro, MacBook Pro and iMac. These DVD-Rs all worked fine in past, but they fail now. I tried DVD+R DL discs and they worked fine, as did single layer DVD+R. I'm wondering if there is some issue with DVD-R media now? I think I'll stick with DVD+R media for now.

I built my project in Encore and checked the project for any errors and then clicked on Build to burn the project to a blank DVD, but I get an error message stating, Please insert DVD media, close the tray, and click OK. My DVD burner works with other applications so I know that the driver works. Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

    John,
I have many problems with Adobe CS5. I have problems with CS4 and I have
    nowhere left to turn.
I have problems with Fireworks in both versions.  I can't associate image
file types with Fireworks CS4 or CS5  Adobe Support logged into two of my
computers and they were not able to solve the problem on either of my two 64
bit computers. They created new admin accounts on both machines. No change.
I went back to using Fireworks 8, which fits my work model better anyway
because I had to repeatedly "float windows" to build animated GIF files. I
totally gave up on that one.
I have problems importing Premiere Pro 1.5 project files in to Premiere
CS4 - Most of the AVI source files "cannot be imported" when loading a
prproj file. Error message:- "Cannot link media: selected file cannot be
linked because its type (audio) does not match the original file's type
(audio and video)".  If I import the files they appear as red boxes with
    Chinese writing.
I cannot build a DVD with Encore CS5. 1: click "Build - 2: Pop up screen
shows DVD, says "Drag file" Then the drive door opens and the pop up screen
goes away. 3: "Please insert DVD" - Close. Goes back to 2 with the pop up
    screen (endless loop).
Apparently all Adobe phone and chat support is in India. They keep asking
the same questions over and over and over: "What is the error message" -- I
tell them the error, then they ask "what is the error message"... etc. They
asked me to enter a URL for access - I get a gray screen. They said use a
different browser. I loaded the same URL in three other browsers, same
result. Then there was a "server error". I asked that they email me the URL
in case I wasn't understanding it.. I was told they do not have access to
email until after they have failed to solve a problem. Now that's logical!
Well, After Effects works, at least.  Dreamweaver "works" but they've just
managed to make it more difficult to use. They took things out that should
have been left alone. It now takes several steps to do what took one step in
CS3. The audio editing program distorts with my $80 USB microphone.
What am I to do at this point? I spent a lot of money and all I got was a
bunch of problems that nobody in India seems to have a clue how to fix. I am
informed that there is no one connected with Adobe support who speaks
English well enough to understand or be understood.
Sales (chat and phone) got my order wrong four times in a row, and when they
finally got it right they shipped it the wrong day.

I'm building a new machine (Windows 7/64 Pro, 16GB RAM, AMD Phenom II x6).
Maybe something will work on it.
Needless to say, I am very disappointed with my large "investment" in Adobe.

  • Blank DVDs not recognized

I am having issues after attempting to build a regular dvd. It keeps saying Please insert DVD media, close the tray, and click OK. I know this has been discussed in previous threads, but I have had no luck trying those solutions. The other DVD applications I have on my computer are Cyberlink DVD Pro, and DVD Architect Studio 5.0. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

  • ITunes is not recognizing blank CDs

iTunes is not recognizing blank discs. The computer shows it with other programs, but it doesn't show on iTunes.

I had (have) same problem. I dinked around for a couple of hours and even though I didn't have a blank CD showing in Itunes I decided to try and burn a CD anyway. Sure enough, it worked! Am I crazy or didn't it used to display blank CD's? Seems like this just happend. So, if it doesn't "see" your CD, trying burning anyway. This happened by the way "out of nowhere", can't explain what caused it.

  • HT2801 My drive reads discs as blank and not reading music cds at all.

My drive is reading start up discs as blank and not reading music cds at all( they just spin in there until I eject them). They're clean, scratch free and ejecting with no problems. I replaced my hard drive three weeks back and need to replace programs and info.

  • CD drive not recognizing new CDs

Hi, my Toshiba Qosmio X500 is not recognizing any CDs.  I put a CD in and nothing happens, I go into my computer and there is nothing there, please help, what should I do.

Same problem here but I think mine was broken by the guys at the Genius Bar. My hard drive went out about a year and half ago and was replaced. After that my CD drive was scratching CD's. I didn't want to give up my computer again so I procrastinated and took it in about 4 months later and they said a bar had been bent and they had bent it back for me. They tried to tell me it was my fault. The tech guy put in a CD and it took a long while to read but then it showed up. That was the last time it worked. Of course when I got home to upload the music CD's I had purchased since then it wasn't working. I was so disgusted that I haven't gone back. Whenever I put a CD in the drive spins very loudly for about 20 seconds and then spits out the CD. And usually scratches it too. The work around I have been doing is putting CD's into my husband's desktop and then he shares that disk drive over our network so I can transfer files onto my computer. Would love to know if anyone has found out if Apple is fixing this problem (since it sounds like a defective piece of hardware) if the computer is still under Apple Care warranty. Thanks!

  • Burned DVD not recognized, comes up as blank DVD

Hi, I have a DVD full of 1000 JPEG pictures made by a photographer, ostensibly on a PC. When I put it into my Mac laptop, the computer thinks it's a blank DVD and pops up a window asking me what to do. I figured out how to make the DVD show up on the desktop, but it still looks empty when you double click on it or try to open it through another application. The DVD is readable on our other computer that is a PC. Any ideas? Thanks!

You could use Toast or similar to read the disc info?
It is likely they used packet writing (UDF).

  • Blank DVDs not detected

When I insert a blank DVD, it does not appear on the desktop. Looking at Disk Utility, it appears that the drive knows there is a DVD-R inside it, but under the 'Write ability' field in Disk Utility, it claims that the disk is 'Read Only (DVD-R)'.
Thinking that I may have had a bad batch of DVDs I have tried several different brands from my friends, but all suffer from the same problem.
Is this a problem I can fix myself, or is my drive broken? Other potentially useful bits of information: I am using an American MacBook, with disks that have been bought in Japan. My drive will read normal CDs and DVDs just fine.
    Thanks in advance
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Core Duo

That was it. Not sure why, but if it's set to 'ignore' when a blank DVD is inserted, it doesn't bother to mount it or create a burn folder for it, it seems. Not entirely sure why. Regardless, thanks for your help!

  • Blank discs not recognized after installing security update

Just installed the latest security update and now the computer will not recognize either blank CDs or DVDs. The first time I popped one into my external burner, I got the notice that I'd inserted a blank DVD and was asked if I'd like to open it in the finder (even though I had already set this as the default option). Then when I said yes, I got an error message that the disk could not be read. Ever since, I no longer get the notice, just the error message. Moreover, "drutil eject tray" will not eject the disk.
Same thing happens with the internal drive. Again, drutil did not work and I had to restart to eject the disk.
Disk Utility shows the disk but will not allow me to format it.
These disks were working fine until I installed the security update.
    Anybody have any ideas?
    Thanks.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
The combo update for Intel-based Macs...

    Repair Permissions afterwards, reboot.

  • Blank dvd nor recognized

    Hi
I have burnt a few DVDS worked fine- now I get a message showing DVD not compatible and its icon doesn't show on the desktop after clearing the message box,
tried a different make of dvd -doesn't work either.
Anyone have an idea what may cause this?
    Thanks

    Something to check:
In System Preferences > CDs & DVDs, what does it say for "When you insert a blank CD" and "When you insert a blank DVD"?
    Something to try:
Run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions.

  • Blank DVD not in Finder 10.8.3

I have a MacPro4,1. Since I upgraded to 10.8.3 I can not see my blank DVD or CD in Finder or on the Desktop. I tried resetting the SMC and the NVRAM and that does not work. The only thing that works is to restore to 10.8.2 from TimeMachine?
Does anyone have a good suggestion?

You also need to enable CD and DVD in the Finder preferences so that they will show mounted.

  • Blank DVDs not reading?

    Hi Folks,
Thanks for your time reviewing my problem.
I use an iMac with Intel processor and when I insert a blank DVD, it takes about 10 seconds before the disc is ejected.
    No messages.
I am still able to open DVD discs that have photos or music, it just spits out the blank ones.
    Any thoughts?
Thanks again for your time and input.
    Sincerely,

    Hi,
It does sound like the Optical drive Lens is on its way out, I would suggest going with a external DVD burner, as it will be much faster and a whole lot cheaper then getting the internal replaced.

  • Burn imovie to dvd-"not recognized"

I spent 5 days and about 26 hours making this iMovie. I bought the **** DVD's to burn it on to 42 of them for work. I finalized the project numerous times, did the "Media Browser" thing and chose the file sizes. I insert the DVD to burn, and it claims that it is "not recognized" in order to burn it. I am beyond frustrated and NO, Apple, I will not give you any more of my money. Helllllllpppp!!!

When you insert the Blank DVD in the finder with nothing else open.
Does the finder recognise the Mounted Blank DVD?
IF it does try burning a small file onto the blank DVD through the Finder.
If it fails what is the error that the Finder tells you?
    If this works then proceed
Use a Free App like Burn http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/Pages/English/home.html
Drag and drop your movie files then click Burn. Job Done. 
    Alternative
you should be able to burn using iDVD.

  • Empty CD or DVD not recognized

    Hi all
After weeks of burning CDs or DVDs without any problems I suddenly get these errors and I cannot burn anymore:
a.) If I load a CD-R I get from the Finder the message "Dieses Medium kann nicht verwendet werden, da es nicht erkannt wird." in english something like "Media cannot used because not recognized ..."
    b.) Same message when loading a DVD-R
c.) If I load a CD-R I get from iTunes the message "Der Brenner wird gerade von einem anderen Programm verwendet." what means in english something like "Burner is used by another program ..."
The optical drive can read bought CD (Music) and DVD (Movie) without any problems. So iTunes or DVD-Player can play them without problems.
I'm not sure but could it be there was a bad software update? I remember some days/weeks ago I got a quite huge software update from apple related to the OS, iTunes a.s.o.
In other posts I've read that people had to exchange their optical drives but I don't think this is the problem here because reading runs without any errors.
    Thanks for any support.

  • [CLOSED] CD/DVDs not recognized (hal-less KDE)

    Hello everyone,
after the last system upgrade last week CDs and DVDs are not recognized when I insert them in the drive.
I'm running hal-less KDE 4.6 with udisks installed.
I removed hal after the upgrade, however the drive could not recognize the disks even when hal was running.
I searched the forum but haven't found any discussion reporting the very same problem.
Can anyone help me to debug this?
    Thanks!

I had the same / similar problem. Just that given that I build my own kernel I thought this was what was causing it. That's why I rebuilded the kernel and enabled ISO and UDF modules in Filesystems. If you're using the standard kernel I have no idea what could be the problem.
