Blank DVDs for Apple Superdrive DVR-106D?

I'm soon going to need some more blank DVD disks for my 17" iMac but there's a problem. As I understand it I can only use 4x DVD-R and 2x DVD-RW discs.
Is this right?
The problem is not many places do these now (I've found some 4x DVD-Rs but 2x DVD-RWs are rarer than rocking horse poop).
However reading through this forum I found the bit about the Superdrive software upgrade. It suggests that I can use faster discs without breaking the drive but that they'll only burn at 1x speed. Is that correct? Can I use, say, 16x DVD media in my drive without destroying it?
Is there anything else I should know? The reason I ask is that in the past I've tried to burn DVDs for use in a domestic DVD player and I've only found one type of disc that does it reliably (RiDisc 4x DVD-Rs which now, of course, are no longer available).
As ever any thoughts or advice gratefully received.

Many of the older drives required you use the same speed media for the drives in your machine or they would show a error message.
As time has gone by, the Drive manufactures and the Media manufactures were made aware of this problem. In many cases they released Firmware Updates for many of the drives used in the computers to enhance there performance.
Here is a Media guide to use when purchasing DVD Media.
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
Read it carefully there is a wealth of information in reguard to Media in general.
Now let's talk about high speed media.
Now since the advent of 16X high speed media, many users have older machines that are only capable of burning at 1x, or 2x. Some of the media that is 16X will not work whereas others will. The key here is to read the packaging on the Media. It will clearly tell you that the media will burn at 1X,2X,4X,8X, and 16X. The key here is using high quality media your burner will burn at the highest rate it is capable of, using the higher quality media where it will not with cheap media.
I also recommend that you use DVD-R Media it is the most widely recognized and used across the board.
http://www.videohelp.com/dvd
As time goes buy and you become more familiar with your Optical drive and it's capabilities then you can branch out and expieriment with different Media Format's.
Remember that not all players and computers will recognize and play Some media's.
I personally use Maxell 16X DVD-R media. This is one of the highest in quality and is not farmed out by them to another maker as some are and burns fine at all speeds, This will be determined by your Optical Drive in your machine.(Read the Packaging on the Media)
Good Luck, Oh by the way I have never had a bad burn with this media.

  • Request Assistance - Converting VHS and DVDs for Apple TV

I have an Apple TV and love it. My mission is to take my old VCRs and DVDs, convert them and place them in my Apple TV Library. I have run into a snag however when the movies is multiple tapes or DVDs. Up to now I have been simply posting them as Part 1, Part 2, etc but that is clumsy and makes my menu in Apple TV very large.
Is there a method for splicing these tapes and DVDs into one large movie? I have tried using iMovie 08 (I will have 09 in early February), but it keeps crashing as the films are too long (3+ hours).
Has anyone else attempted to do what I want to do and have you been successful? If so what software did you use?
    Any help would be appreciated.

I have probably 200 home movies and 50 hollywood movies in my TV, and it definitely helps to have some organization.
I have found that I can go to the Movies section in iTunes, from the source pane on the left. You will see a list of all your movies. Pick one of the three you would like to organize together. Right-click (or control-click) and select "Get Info". Now go to the "Video" section and type in the name you want to organize this 3-part movie into in the field called "Show Name". You can also type an episode number if you want. Under "Sorting" you can also put the Show name in. Click "OK". Repeat this for your other 2 portions, and they will all show up under the "Show Name" on the TV.
For example, I have 14 videos from a recent trip to Turkey and Greece all under one show, and I have Godfather 1,2,3 all under Godfather.

  • Ipod screen is blank except for Apple symbol.

    Hey,
I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem with their iPod touch. It recently just decidd to conk out. By conk out I mean it's a black screen with the Apple symbol. I've tried turning it off and turning it on again. But that doesn't work. I even left it off for a couple days but that didn't help either. I had a couple of apps on it...do you think maybe it has a virus? Is there anything I can do myself to fix the problem?
Thanks in advance for any help!

I have never heard of a virus on an unjailbroked iOS device
    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • What's the best Inkjet Printable Blank DVD for consistant printing ?

I'm looking for advice for a reliable, consistant manufacturer of printable DVD-R's.
I burn and print short runs for clients at home, and I'm having problems finding a consistant print surface, which is a problem for reprints if i use disks from a diferent spindle. Even from the same supplier, disks have a variety of width inner circle, so I have to redesign the face before printing.
I've also found that a lot of the disks labelled as white are slightly yellow, and often have a wide inner ring that's white, but appears darker than the rest of the disk surface.
I've been using some Verbatim disks recently. They have a consistant diameter inner circle, but they are a bit yellow.
Does anyone have any suggestions for consistant inkjet printable media ?
    Thanks
    Stephen

I use Maxell, (can't beat the quility of the disk) and they are print to center media. I haven't noticed any yellow cast them, they seem white to me, from spindle to spindle.
There is a slight difference in density of color on the very center, but your going to find that on any DVD, due to the fact that that part of the disk doesn't have a reflective layer like the burnable area of the disk does, this is normal.
The printable area of Maxell disk is consistant, doesn't change from batch to batch.

If your device is continually restarting, not responding, or showing the Apple logo with no progress bar or a stopped progress bar, place the device into recovery mode and try restoring again.

  • IMac ejects blank DVDs only (plays DVDs, CDs and accepts blank CDs)

I see a lot of threads with a similar theme to my question - but not one that matches it, so have started a new thread.
My iMac will play commercial DVDs, DVDs I have burnt myself and commercial CDs, and will write to blank CD, but ejects blank DVDs (after 5-10 seconds of thinking about it). I have tried a range of blanks (different types and manufacturers). Does anyone have any ideas on this? I'm thinking it's a curious software issue as the superdrive is otherwise functioning perfectly.
    Thanks in advance

This issue is common and does not seem to be confined to any particular iMac model or Optical Drive brand that is used in them. Although it might help to know what iMac you have, what OS X it is running and what program(s) you are using to burn DVDs...?
    1. Try toggling your Blank DVD: Preference, from the current selection to another and then back to "Ask what to do"
    2. Try cleaning the Superdrive with a standard Lens Cleaning Kit.
Example: > Memtek 32020029479 CD and DVD Lens Cleaning Kit: Electronics
    3. Try creating either a burn folder (in Finder) or have your finished project ready to burn (in other App's) and force them to ask for a blank Disc.
    4. Then if you still can not use Blank DVDs, contact Apple Support and make arrangments for a service appointment.

  • Mini combo drive stopped recognizing blank dvds

I have been using the same blank DVDs for a year now and they have just stopped working within the last two months. I insert the disk, the drive attempts to identify the media for a minute or so then spits it out.
I checked 20 odd DVDs and it's the same thing over and over. The drive still recognizes and burns CDs however.
Besides the standard Mac updates, I have recently started using Handbrake to pull my movies on my iPhone.
What do I need to check or reinstall to fix this issue?

oops, yeah. It is a superdrive. My bad.
I have never seen an error message.

  • Blank DVD's show up as CD's

My new iMac (and first ever Mac) arrived last Wednesday. Over the weekend, I tried to burn some quicktime movies to dvd.
First, I inserted the media, which is Memorex DVD+R's. These would show up on the desktop as a CDR. I thought that was strange, but decided to try anyway. I drug the movies I wanted on the DVD to it's desktop icon. I then right-clicked and selected "burn." Immediately, I received this error code: 0x80020000.
Does anyone know (1) why the DVD's are recognized as CD's, and (2) what that error code means?
BTW, here's some more info I learned while trying to troubleshoot: I can burn CD's. Commercially recorded DVD's are recognized correctly and can be played. A homemade DVD (that is from the same pack at the blank DVD) that is not yet finalized is recognized as a blank DVD.
Thanks in advance for any help.

My new iMac (and first ever Mac) arrived last
Wednesday. Over the weekend, I tried to burn some
    quicktime movies to dvd.
Welcome to the club! Isn't the Intel iMac amazing? Although I have three other computers, each with different operating systems, they now sit 'in the dust' while I play with the iMac.
First, I inserted the media, which is Memorex
DVD+R's. These would show up on the desktop as a CDR.
Hummm... kinda odd. Can't remember if mine says CDR or DVDR. I don't have any "+" DVDs, all "-" ...
I thought that was strange, but decided to try
anyway. I drug the movies I wanted on the DVD to it's
desktop icon. I then right-clicked and selected
"burn." Immediately, I received this error code:
    0x80020000.
No idea what that is. One thought: do you have any .mov or mpg files you can test? If so, try making a sample movie using iMovie and and then iDVD. Don't put a blank in until iDVD says to and see if iDVD recognizes the blank DVD for what it is. That will tell you the Superdrive does work.
I use a program called Roxio's Titanium Toast, a program for burning CDs and DVDs instead of the system burning mechanism. Works great and I burn a lot of DVDs and CDs.
Does anyone know (1) why the DVD's are recognized as
CD's, and (2) what that error code means?

  • Superdrive cannot recognize blank DVD-R

I have a black MacBook that is around 6 months old. I have never had a problem with the superdrive until recently. It can recognize and read DVDs, CDs, and Blank CDs but CANNOT read blank DVD-Rs. It will spin the DVD for a while then eject it. I have tried different brands of DVDs and none work. Is this a problem with my superdrive that Apple needs to fix or can I do it?

A shot in the dark, but these aren't DVD-R DL discs, are they? The original Macbooks can't write to Dual-Layer discs. They'd say DL on the package somewhere, and cost several dollars per disc.
If that's not the issue, then yeah, I think you have a bum drive. I'd take it in while it's still under warranty.

  • Superdrive ejects blank DVD-RWs...

Hello folks... I am trying to use some DVD-RWs to back-up some data, but for some reason, my PowerBook G4 (early 2005) just spits them out. It takes DVD-Rs and CD-Rs, CD-RWs without any problems, but it just won't accept the DVD-RWs.
    Any ideas? I hope I didn't just spend $15 on media I can't use.

  • DVR-111D vs Apple Superdrive

I'm planning to ad an internal DVR to replace the CD drive. My current thought is to buy either a Pioneer DVR-111D or an Apple Superdrive, which is really a Pioneer DVR-109 with Apple's native burning capabilities pre-installed. I know that to burn dual layer DVDs I will need to use Patchburn on either of the drives, and that replaces the pre-installed Apple native burning capabilities on the DVR-109.
Does anyone have an opinion on the better choice of the two drives? I know the DVR-111D is a newer model, but will that really be any kind of advantage in my old B&W g3? I really don't know what the limitations of my G3 are in this regard.
    Thanks.

I can't comment on the DVR-109 but I have a DVR-111D and couldn't be happier with it. I paid $38 Canadian for it at a PC store. I pluged it in and it just worked, very Apple. I did not install PatchBurn. It shows up in System Profiler/Hardware/Disk Burning as follows:
    PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-111D
    Firmware Revision: 1.19
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn support: Yes (unsupported)
    Profile Path: None
    Cache: 2000 KB

    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
    Write Stratagies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
I haven't yet burned a double-layer DVD yet but the format shows up under DVD-Write and the option shows up when choosing to burn in Toast. I have burned with both iTunes (music CDs) and Disk Utility (DVD images)--no PatchBurn required. It boots OS install disks, and is one of the few bits of hardware that you can get at an ElCheapo PC store that you can put into an Apple. I tried several Apple stores, none of them carried them. They had lots of $150 LaCie drives though (hmmmm). Don't tell anyone but there is no difference between the 111-D and the Superdrive, except for the price. Besides adding more memory to your G3 it's the most usefull/cost effective piece of hardware you can put into a G3.
    Burn on....
P.S. It works in OS 9.2.2 and 8.6 too (no DVD read in 8.6 just CD)

  • IMac DVD Burner only burns on Apple Brand blank DVDs

    Hello,
I have an iMac G4 Dome and just last week it stopped burning DVDs on any brand outside of Apple Blank DVDs. The CD burner works fine, it's just the DVD burner. Can anybody help?

maybe you just accidentally bought your first batch of DVD+R.
The burner in that machine can only burn DVD-R
THis is confusing to a lot of people. We're all so used to seeing CD-R, that we just assume DVD-R has a similar meaning.
The breakdown is something like this.
CD-R = Compact Disc (dash) Recordable
    DVD-R = DVD minus Recordable
    DVD+R= DVD plus Recordable.
I know it's dopey, but that's probably what's happening. The early superdrive, though actually ABLE TO DO IT, has the firmware blocking any DVD+R media, largely because Apple knew that +R media will not play in a lot of consumer decks, and didn't want to field the questions and irate calls (i.e. My iMovie and iDVD project wont play in my cousin's DVD player??!!!_
Anyhow, i suspect you just bought your first DVD+R media, and it just wont work.

Several users has hade problems with these drivers, maybe Apple would extend warrent on thise lousy gizmo´s.
Or make the superdrive like a cassette, so just a push on the side of the iMac makes the superdrive "pop out". So you dont have to demolishe the whole computer just to replace it.
