Blank dvds work in gnome but not xfce [solved]

Hi.
I have installed Arch with xfce4 and xfce4-goodies. When I put in a dvd with data on, an icon appears on the desktop and thunar starts up automatically. When I put in a blank dvd to burn it nothing happens, so I've tried to mount it with "mount -t iso9660 /dev/sr0 /media/dvd" but I get the following message:
mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr0,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
The result is I can't burn dvds. When I put back a working dvd (one with data on), using "mount" gives this line:
/dev/sr0 on /media/dvd type iso9660 (ro,noexec,nosuid,nodev,unhide,user=david)
I tried different cds and dvds but same thing every time so I installed gnome, put a blank dvd in and everything worked fine. Back in xfce there's the same problem. I have tried different mounting commands such as using /dev/dvd, /dev/dvd0 and /dev/dvd1 but I get the same message. I've not been able to find a solution so if anyone has any suggestions/pointers I'd very much appreciate it. Thanks.

You can't mount blank media. Mount makes a file system accessible, but since blank media has none, the mount operation fails. XFCE might complain about the failed mount, but you should still be able to burn the DVD afterward. I guess Gnome just fails silently? I dunno, I don't use it.
Anyway, just burn your dvd without trying to mount it first. Also, when trying to mount a DVD, you should specify udf as the file system, iso9660 is for CDs.

I'm trying to get to work the Danish Keyboard layout in Kde, with no success. In Gnome it works fine, but in Kde (or well, any Qt based app), when I hit å, ø, or try to write accents, I get two white quads instead of the correct character. It works if I write them in a gtk aplication, copy and paste in a kde app.. but...
Does anyone knows what can be possibly happening?
My xorg.conf has
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "dk"
and Kde is configured to use the DK Layout.

Ouh, no.. I have another problem
I want the language (for apps like gcc, or mc) to be english, not danish, so I replaced in rc.conf da_DK.utf8 by en_DK.utf8, and got the language as english, but now.. accents doesn't work anymore. They do work, again, under gnome, but not in kde. Any ideas?

FCP3 to DVD (works on computer but not dvd player)

Hi all
I'm trying to export a wedding video from FCP3 to DVD using Toast 7. I can Burn a copy that works perfectly on any computer but skips horribly on DVD player, does anybody have any idea what I might be doing wrong?

Toast is not the best vehicle to encode DVD material. You might do better with iDVD and you would definitely do better with DVD Studio Pro.

Dvd works in player but not in mac dvd viewer...

Ok, so let me know if this has already been discussed...
I just created a movie, exported to idvd, set everything up, and burned it. It opens and plays just fine in my dvd player, but when I put it back into my iMac G5 or into my IBook, it won't open the menu or play the movie. It says it is not supported...any ideas?

Starting oracle-sqldeveloper in dwm produces nothing but a grey window for me. It does however work as expected in gnome.
Any ideas on why?

23" works on One but not the Other

I have a Powerbook G4 1.25 GHz running 10.3.9 connected to a similar vintage 23" clear plastic case display with a DVI to ADC adapter connection and it works great.
My husband recently bought a used Powerbook G4 1.67 GHz running 10.4.8. We thought sure that when I was out of town with my computer he could hook up and enjoy the use of my big display, but no luck. It just gives him a blank screen.
Any suggestions as to why that would be? Does his machine require a different adapter? Is it possible his port is just not functioning?

I couldn't remember what the Display Preferences had said when we tried this last spring and again in the summer, so tonight we connected it again, and wouldn't you know - it worked just fine. We didn't do anything different, so I have no clue as to why it worked this time but not before. He's thinking about getting his own big display, but didn't want to waste his money if he couldn't get it to work, so now I guess we're shopping for another 23" display - probably a used one. UTube videos from a variety of sources works on iPhone5S but not on Macbook Pro? Thinking it has to do with recommended Flash settings on the MAC. Is there an app to resolve this inoperability on a MAC without having to make Flash active?

What format is the video? Is it .wmv? Do the DVD's have any type of protection or encryption? This information will help in finding a solution.

Yes, the lowest possible Burn speed will be a step in the direction of compatibility.
As for the Quality setting, Robert Johnson has done tests on various versions of PE and has recommend a setting of about 7.8 (IIRC). Unlike Encore, where one has many more choices, PE limits one to a Quality setting of 8. This is about equivilent to the recommend 7MB/s in Encore. Robert found that just below the 8 max. actually yielded slightly better results, than did the full 8, on his tests.
The three things that help to insure the greatest compatibility with set-top players are, and in pretty much this order:
1.) Quality media - Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or Falcon (US only)
2.) Burn speed (slower is better. It might take a few minutes more, but if it works, you don't have returns or have to do it again.)
3.) Bit-rate around 7MB/sec
Remember - no set-top player HAS to play any Burned DVD. Most do, but some just do not - only replicated, pressed discs. Also, some player are still sensitive to the -R and +R media types. This is less a problem with newer units, however it still could be an issue with many older ones.
Personally, I test a "master" on four different players, plus my computer, before I Burn a batch, or ship out any. One unit is a very high-end Marantz, another is a mid-level Marantz, one is an RCA "el cheapo" and the other is an older Pioneer. I figure if the disc plays everywhere, there is a good chance that it will play for the client - though there are still no guarantees.

Why does the counter work in MAX, but not Labview?

Please help, I have been away from Labview for over 3 months, and I am quite rusty....
Last year, I successfully configured NI9401 to measure period (seconds) by counting the rising edges of my sensor signal. Since then, I have aquired a new PC, and loaded all my software into it, including the Labview VI's that successfully worked on the old computer.
I can see the digital signal using MAX and the test panel for the NI9401, so, I know my wiring and my TTL signal is OK, but, when I try to run the attached VI, nothing happens except the error below.. How do I tell this VI to look for the signal on MOD3/CTR0 and channel 14?

OK, now. Resolved the issue. The vi is fine, but, some shaky wires were identified...worked in MAX but not in the vi. Now that the connections have been tightened up, it works for both. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Edit: I succeeded to solve it accidentally. I did the following: Sign the jar in Netbeans, clean and build, the jar didn't work, I wiped out the .ks from the jar and clean and build again. Now it worked.

Wifi works at home but not when away from home

My Wifi works at home but not when away from home, what is wrong? I thought with a phone plan I didn't need to have a wifi connection.

You either need WiFi or Cellular (or both). If you have neither, you can't connect to the internet.
Most people use WiFi at home and Cellular while away from home, or connect to public WiFi networks where there are some.

Album Art works for most, but not all

I was reading previous forums on the subject, but no clear answer was given..
The album art shows up fine in itunes and my library and works for most of my music on my ipod, but how come some album's art does appear? I have it set manually and select 'Get Info' then 'Artwork' and add it from there, then drag in the finished product to my ipod. I've been doing that and it works fine for most of the albums, but every so often, the album art will not appear on my ipod. Am I doing something wrong? I take them all from the same source (amazon.com) but it makes no sense to me how some randomly don't appear.
I tried deleting the artwork and re-adding it, but nothing happened again. If you could answer why it works for most but not all or how I can get the album art to appear for the ones it will not by re-doing something, it would be appreciated. thanks.

I encountered the same problem in the beginning. When I compared the size of the original images, the working ones seemed to be smaller in general, so I reduced the size of all covers I intended to upload on the pod to 300x300 pixels.
This seemed to work - for 2 days. I bought the pod on friday, had pictures on sunday, but on Monday (after the first time the pod was fully discharged) none were left left.
So I ended searching this forum for related problems...
And decided to join my problem to this entry.
