Blank Files appearing in Hard Drive??

I have been noticing These blank files apearing recently. Plain Text,  Zero KB files In my main harddrive. I narrowed it down to my Pro Tools program. They generate each time I open Protools. Can anyone explain why and what this is? just worried it could potentialy be a bad thing?

Ok Its doing it again with no external drives attached. and this comes after restarting system. Its creating files when protools 8.0 is launched. so i copied some console info:

  • Finder doesn't display files on external hard drives

    Hello-
I have two external hard drives and recently I've been moving a ton of data around.
Once two days ago and now again today, the files on those hard drives did not appear in the finder window. Searches yeilded results in that window fine, but the window was blank upon opening.
Two days ago I addressed it with a disk repair. I'm not sure that's what did it though. This appears to be a finder problem.
Earlier I had the same problem. It's nothing to do with the disks; when going to info, it shows the data is all there and searches yield results. But when backing out of the results, the finder window would again be blank.
I have tried: Restarting, starting in safe mode and running disk repairs on the disks, relaunching finder about a hundred times, logging out and back in, clicking on the window and selecting view options, then fiddling with them (this may have corrected the issue on the disk with less data on it, but then again, it might have been coincidence, but the files on that one showed up just then).
Just as I typed this, the beach ball showed up, the window hitched a couple of times, and lo, all my files appeared again.
What appears to be happening, is that Finder is hanging up. I hypothesize this because I tried to eject the disk and coudln't because the error message said Finder was busy with it. Yet Finder wasn't showing my files. That suggests that Finder was balking. The disks were fine, the data is there, it's just that Finder wouldn't show it. Yet when I waited several minutes, the files appeared, suggesting Finder was merely running very slowly or otherwise suboptimally.
Is there anyway to run a repair on Finder itself? This problem is recurrant.

I don't think it's your finder, it is the speed of your hard drive reading those files on the drive.  When you try to access the hard drive take a look at the bottom right corner you will see a spinning icon it will continue until it has read the drive.  Normally you should wait for that to stop then you should see the data.

  • How do I restore iTunes library from Backup files on External Hard Drive?

How do I restore iTunes library from Backup files on External Hard Drive and keep the new iTunes library on the External Hard Drive. I have all the media and playlist and .xml .itl files, just want the iTunes to recognise the content.
I backedup my iTunes content by dragging to External Hard Drive. Formatted and reinstalled OS. My iTunes content is so large, that I wish for the Library and content to remain on the External Hard Drive. I have all the music files and playlists, I just cannot get the iTunes application to display all the content. Hoping to Not have to drag and drop all the content to be recopied into new iTunes organised files.
Troubleshooting this by researching other conversations on the web, I have come stuck for a solution. One Troubleshoot told me to hold down the Command key and then lauch iTunes and a dialogue box will appear to Choose a new library, however when I try this, no Dialogue box appear to give me the option!?

It sometimes has that funny switch symbol on it too.

  • Backing up certain files to external hard drive?

Is there anything I need to do besides drag & drop these over & then delete the files on my hard drive? I feel like I read somewhere that there was a special backup procedure.
I am almost out of space b/c of a ton of photos & videos, and I have a time machine but want something else so that I can access & use the files at any time in the future to make videos, photo albums, etc.
I found an old post on here (pasted below) but I don't really get the 'alias' thing- can't I just drag all the files to a new folder on the external hard drive & delete them from the old folder rather than having to worry about creating a new folder with the same name so programs can access it?
    THANKS!
Reply to someone from last year:
It's safe to move any or all of the files that you have in the following folders:
    /Home/Documents/
    /Home/Downloads/
    /Home/Movies/
    /Home/Music/
    /Home/Pictures/
    /Home/Sites/
You can copy the entire folders to your external drive. Then delete them from your main hard drive to free up space. Next create an alias for each of the folders, place the aliases in the main /Home/ folder, and rename them to the exact same names. The aliases will enable all other software to access the real folders on the external drive while taking up far less space on the main drive.
Do not do the above with the /Home/Library/ folder because the alias trick does not work with that folder.
If you aren't able to free up enough space doing the above, then replace the main hard drive with a larger one. This is actually the preferable solution rather than using the external hard drive.

Steve, I think confused everyone by using the term 'backing up' in the title of my orig post. I'll try to use more correct terminology.
My problem arose when I attached my external drive device to my pc and 'copied' C: My Pictures' (which contains my images in a folder called All Images and my .lrcat) to external drive F:. I had two reasons in mind for doing this. I wanted to transfer my current .lrcat and All Images from my pc to my laptop via the external drive and I also wanted to have a (safe-keeping) 'back up' on the external drive.
When I opened F: and checked some files in All Images I discovered that all my .dng files were missing - no .dng icon - nothing. All my other images (jpegs, etc.) were fine. This was my first batch of .dngs in LR so it's a learning process. I thought I'd missed something that needed to be done in order to be able to 'copy' those .dngs to F:, but didn't know what to do.
Perhaps I should add that the .dng files in the C: All Images folder appear as .dng icons which, when double-clicked, open in CS3, so they are THERE.
Some of answers above, perhaps because I misled them with my terminology, seemed to indicate that I should have 'saved' the metadata. That was useful but didn't seem to quite answer why the files were completely missing from the All Images file (which is the folder into which the RAWs were 'copied' upon original Import and converting to .dngs).
Bottom line is: Why are the .dngs not being copied along with all the other images from C: to F:?
Sure hope this makes sense to you.

  • Finder freezes when trying to move files to external hard drive

Whenever I try to move files from internal hard drive to my external finder freezes it. I have over 5 TBs of free space on my external, so I know it's not a space issue. This happens no matter the size of the file. It starts the copy and then will freeze before it finishes. If I try to force quit and select relaunch it acts like it is relaunching but my icons never re-appear and the command bar at the top never returns. So I end up having to hard boot.
I just reinstalled the 10.5.8 combo update and verified both hard disks, if any repairs came up I repaired and then did the same with disk permissions....it's still freezing on me. I am frustrated because there are some files I'd really like to move to my external raid hard drive but I'm not able to.
The freezing happens if I'm trying to transfer files from a disc or an additional external HD. My internal HD is only so big and the external Raid drive is for my capture scratch on Final Cut Pro and I'm even having issues capturing to that drive. Everything wants to be on my internal HD and that doesn't work for me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Sean Dale1 wrote:
Do you get any error messages and if so what are they? Do you have any problems copying files off the problem drive back to your Mac or do the freezes only occur when copying to the external?
No I don't get any error messages, the finder just freezes and when I try to relaunch finder it doesn't relaunch properly..all icons are missing and I'm not able to access the the task bar to properly shut down so I have to hard boot.
It happens only when trying to save files to the external, whether through drag and drop or within programs. I am able to access files on the external and copy files from there to my internal without problems.
Have you tried attaching this drive to another Mac and if so do you get the same issues?
I don't have another Mac to attach the drive to.
How is this RAID attached, SCSI, FireWire, SATA or what? How was the RAID created, Disk Utility or third party software and have you verified the integrity of the RAID?
The RAID is attached via SCSI. In an attempt to solve this finder issue I re-installed the drivers to the most current drivers available and in doing so updated any firmware....and there was no change. I was not the one who set up the RAID so I don't know how it was created. It's an Enhance UltraStore R16 and I've been using it without issues since January 2007 and this freezing thing has been intermittent for a few months now but now it's constant and annoying. I've verified the disk through disk utility but I don't have any software to check the integrity otherwise. Do you have any recommendations as to what software I could use to do this?

My PC computer was wiped (virus) including itunes. How do I transfer the many playlists and music on my ipod to the new re-installed itunes?? Ipod is synced to old itunes. I have all original music files on external hard drive. Please help?
New itunes is trying to wipe the ipod. But have many many playlists (many hours making) which I want to save. Any help would be appreciated.

If you want to just extract the playlists from your iPod, plug it in iTunes.  When it appears under devices, right->click on it and choose Export Playlists.  Save them to a location such as your desktop and them import them into your library once you have copied and imported all of your music back into it.
See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • DELETING FILES PERMAMNENTLY FROM HARD DRIVE AND PASSWORD PROTECTING

DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO PERMANENTLY DELETE FILES FROM THE HARD DRIVE? ALSO, WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO ADD A PASSWORD TO A FOLDER?
    THANKS!

#1) Please check your caps lock key which seems to be on and many perceive as shouting your questions.
#2) Use secure empty trash when you want secure deleting.
#3) There isn't a folder password feature. There's a utility which will let you hide folders with a password, but that is easily circumvented. Then there's making password protected, encrypted image files. The second is very secure but it isn't a folder, it appears as a new volume on your desktop.

  • Safari & FireFox  freeze when I try to upload a file from my hard drive.

Safari & FireFox freeze when I try to upload a file from my hard drive. This just started happening in the past couple of days. I haven't installed any software, or made any updates (that I can remember.) When the browser freezes I can't "force quit" them. I have to manually shut the computer down are restart it. I would appreciate any help you can provide.

HI and welcome to Apple Discussions...
Safari and Firefox box.... it could be a problem with the hard drive itself, not your browsers.
Just to make sure, boot from your install disc, run Disk Utility to Verify and if necessary, Repair any errors Disk Utility reports.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
(In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first from the installer menu)
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*

If its from one drive TO A BLANK / NEW HD, and its a LOT of files (400+ GB)
then just use Superduper cloning software to copy it all in one click and sit back and let it work
    free to use

  • I moved itunes file to external hard drive and want to move the file on my pc to recycle bin. When I move i get an error message that it cannot delete ituneshelper.dll access is denied. Can I move that file to the recycle bin?

I am trying to free up space on my pc and moving itunes files to external hard drive. I have followed instructions and believe I have file copied to new drive, but I am having trouble moving file to recycle bin as the instructions say. I am getting the following error message: cannot delete ituneshelper.dll:access denied, make sure disk is not full or write protected and file not in use. I know the file is not in use when trying to move. Any help would be most appreciated. I am on Windows XP.

Yes. And you should not have moved that folder. Put it back. To move your iTunes library move the folder from User's Music.

  • I have an external drive - WD My Passport FOR MAC. I want to format it to work on both mac and windows. Which format do you think I should use? Will either one cause damage to the files on the hard drive?

I have an external hard drive - WD My Passport FOR MAC. I want to format it to work on both mac and windows. I also want to be able to connect it to my TV and watch movies.
I read up and I think I am supposed to use exFAT or FAT32? I also saw MS-DOS. Which format should I should use? Will any of them cause damage to the files on the hard drive?
My little memory stick uses MS-DOS and it works on both mac and windows.
Please can you just tell me a little about each and suggest which one to use.
I know how to change it once you tell me so don't waste your time writing about changing it.

Will any of them cause damage to the files on the hard drive?
WARNING: FORMATTING A DRIVE ERASES IT COMPLETELY !!
If you need to carry large files (e.g., larger than about 4GB) back and forth, you may need ExFAT. Otherwise MS-DOS works for smaller files.
The Mac can Read, but not write Windows New Technology File System (NTFS) without an add-on program such as Paragon NTFS.

  • [SOLVED] How to Restore Folders/Files from a Hard Drive

I broke my system today; it won't boot into any run level. Rather than try to fix it, I'd like to just pull off the 4 or 5 MB of files that are on the hard drive. The partition they are in was formatted XFS. I have the 2008.06 ArchLive CD - is it possible to access files from the hard drive after booting with an ArchLive CD? If so, I could just scp them to an external server. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You should be able to mount the partition once you've loaded up the live CD. Just figure out which one it is by using
    fdisk -l
then mount it to /mnt or wherever you want it.
As for moving/saving them, I'm not entirely sure how to get them onto an external server. You might have to mount another partition in order to install any apps that you need to connect to an external server, but wait for someone who really knows to answer before you try it. If you're only talking about 4 or 5 MB, I would just mount a USB stick and dump them on there.

  • How do you change the default save as directory when saving a PDF file to your hard drive?

This is the on-line help instructions on this site:
Downloading a PDF file to your hard drive
You can download a PDF file to the hard drive from a web page's link. Downloading PDF files doesn't require the ActiveX plug-in file to be installed. (If you want to open and view the PDF file after downloading it, you must have Acrobat, Adobe Reader, or Acrobat Reader installed.)
To download a PDF file from a link:
    1. Right-click the link to a PDF file, and then choose Save Target As from the pop-up menu.
    2. In the Save As dialog box, select a location on your hard drive, and then click Save.
My issue:  I want to save several pdf files (from the Adobe Reader in my browser) one at a time and each time it defaults the save as directory to the desktop and I have to go looking for the directory I last saved a pdf file in.  I got lots of directories and I wish I could change the default setting for the save as directory.  Just a minor thing but irritating as other programs usually will allow you to switch the default save as directory to one of your choosing.

There is not a way to set the default location from all the forums i searched in the last couple days.

There is another option if the Macbook will start up in Target Disk Mode.
Restart the computer while holding down the T key. If you see the firewire symbol moving around on the screen you can connect this one to another one in TDM. You will need a suitable cable to connect the two Macs.

  • (Error code -36) Can't delete files from external hard drive

So as I was copying files to my hard drive (Seagate Backup Plus Drive) my Macbook Pro went flat, and so the files obviously didn't get to finish copying. Now they're greyed out in my folder and when I try to move the files to the trash it comes up with this message:
"The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “-----” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)"
Does anyone know how I can fix this? I've tried a couple of different things and nothing has worked, and I don't wanna stuff around too much in case I lose everything.

Presumably you are using the Seagate as an external HD.
"my Macbook Pro went flat" means the MBP shut down or powered off suddenly for some reason?
If your Seagate was not properly ejected that would cause problems. You should run Disk Utility and Verify and Repair the Seagate, if needed. Then you should be able to deal with the uncompleted files.
