Blank Icons on .doc files when make Pages default.

When i make pages default for .doc or .docx files (for exemple), they become blank icons. It's terrible. How to solve this??? I've tried a lot of options but always with no sucess.  I selected the file .doc or .docx, click cmd+I and select Pages to open all documents on this kind........and then all files .doc or docx gains a black icon!!! I have repeated this same operation but forcing/change the icon of the file (with cmd+I and put a pages icon on the up letf side).......result: all files became blank icons...except that one! Anyone have a solution?

I understand Peter, but I work with a lot of files, and I'm very visually on it.
Separate kind of files by their aspect is very important for me.
I don´t need that .doc or .docx have pages icon....I just need an any icon, not a blank icon.
Because numbers do the same to .xls or .xlsx files.
Imagine a Folder with 2500 files (.doc .docx .xls .xlsx .dot.....etctetc) all blank icon files......files that I need to identify quickly.
So, I understand your point of view, but i really need to put icons on .doc ; docx files.....and note one by one.
Maybe an automator workflow??
Any soluction??
Thanks

  • How do you make pages default document reader

    Hi
I have just started using pages and i cant seem to work out how to make it the default application to open up the many documents i have.
Every time i open a document it opens in textedit, i know that you can choose in properties with which program to open it with, but i am getting really fed up of doing this.
is there any way to make pages the default instead of textedit program.

p.s I used to use MS office but i cant be bothered to reinstall it and most of my docs are .doc (office format)

    kb,
You can set .doc files to open in Pages, and it’s surprisingly easy: just go to the Finder, single-click on any .doc file, then type command-I (Get Info). Click on the Open With... menu and select Pages (or navigate to Pages if it’'s not in the menu). To make all .doc files open in Pages, click on the Change All button.
You can do the same thing with other types of files, like RTF or plain text.

  • How to make Pages default app for .doc files

How do you make Pages/Numbers the default app for all .doc/.xls files?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Highlight a known Word document in the Finder, highlight it & choose Get Info from the File menu. In the Get Info box, click the triangle next to "Open With." Click on this drop-down menu & choose Pages. If Pages is not a choice, choose "Other" & navigate to the Pages application. Now click the "Change" button under the text that asks if you want to open all documents like this with Pages. Repeat with Excel documents & Numbers.
Be aware that the icons for these documents will be plain white icons.

  • Trial question:  Can't open .doc files from web page

I'm using Dreamweaver on a Mac, and I have a link on a page
that should bring up a doc file. When I preview the page in Safari,
it brings up a directory listing which highlights the file so that
you can double-click and open the file. (Of course, I'd love for it
to go ahead and open the file, but my understanding is that
Dreamweaver Mac doesn't support that.) However, when I preview in
Internet Explorer, I either get a message that the File is Not
Found or it just spins and never brings up anything. The file is in
the root directory of my site (same directory as my index.html.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Do you have Word installed on your Mac? If you don't, it
    won't open.

  • Make Pages default program to open my MS Word docs

    Hey friends,
I'm new to Apple World and I'm trying to figure out how to make Pages the default program to open my old MS Word docs. Right now Text Edit opens it.
    Thanks a million!

    Hi Chris,
This is how I do it in OS 10.5 (Leopard). Should be fairly similar in other versions:
Find a .doc file using Finder (Open your hard drive and navigate to it through your folders)
    Click to highlight the file
Go to File > Get Info or type Apple-I
The 4th section down gives you the option to choose an app to open this file with. Select pages.app
Click the Change all button to get all your .doc files to open in Pages by default.
That should all work as described; please write back if it doesn't!

  • Make Pages Default For Opening Word Documents

I currently use iWork but also use openOffice, whenever I open up a Word document by double clicking it openOffice opens... How can I make Pages the default application for handling these files?

Walt...THANK YOU...can't tell you how irritating it was for me to, by force of habit, double click on a *.doc file & then have Parallels start to open Windows XP so it could get to MS Word - I just did not want that to happen...what a pain. I tried to find a way to have Pages be the default program for *.doc files but couldn't until I read your entry. As a new Mac convert from years & years of Windows use, let me say it again...Thank You

  • Make pages default program

Ok, I've installed iwork '08 and am wondering why, if i try and open a file from mail or a download I still have to go to 'open with' and select pages. It doesn't just default to pages. Also, when saving pages documents it doesn't give you an option to save as a different type of file (jpeg etc...) therefore I might have problems sending files to people in other formats.
    Thanks,
    Rod

    rod,
The reason Word files don't automatically open in Pages is because you haven't told the system to open ALL Word files in Pages. By selecting Open With, you're telling it to open that one file with Pages. To change them all, you'll see a button below the Open With menu that says Change All. Click on that, and all Word files will open in Pages.
Your second issue is about how to save Pages files in other formats. You have to select File > Export -- not File > Save As. But your example is how to save a Pages file as a jpeg. You can't do that in Pages. You can export to Word, pdf, RTF, or text.

  • Make Pages default text editor

How do I make Pages the default text editor? (Double click a .txt file and Pages opens instead of Appleworks)

    Hello kelwhite01,
welcome to the Pages Discussions. Select a ".txt" Document in a Finder window and open the Infowindow for it (shortcut: "command" and "i"). In the middle of the window you see a section titled "Open with". There you can choose the app you want to open the selected document with. After choosing Pages, press the button at the bottom of the section to order the system to open every document of that type with Pages.

  • 1013 File Adpter pick .pdf, .doc files and make it available in Worklist

    Hi Jasmin,
I can add the converted document to PDF as a attachment to the XDP form in the workspace.
I am strugling now with that envelope (the XDP), cant render it to PDF and than workspace enable it. I will have a look around the web because it will be there. One question is can I control permitions on the attachment? I want just read only permitions.

  • How do I convert docx files to doc files when sending to a non-apple user?

When I send files as attachments they crash the computer of a colleague.  He thinks that if I convert them to .doc documents his computer won't crash, but my apple doesn't seem to provide that option.  Any ideas?

Microsoft Word files are cross-platform, so if your colleague has Word installed he should be able to read them, unless his version predates the introduction of docx, which seems to be the case.
When docx was introduced, Microsoft provided a converter for Word 2004 that enabled users to read docx files from Word 2008 (the first version to use them). Possibly they did the same for the Windows version.

  • New to iPad from android/PC...How can I view PDF, XLS, DOC files when I am not connected to wifi?

I understand that GoodReader is able to open PDF, XLS, DOC, etc., but is not actually able to edit them.
Documents-to-Go can edit them, but will they be stored on my iPad?
Evernote seems to be able to access them without being connected to wifi, but cannot edit spreadsheets that I am aware of.
Does anyone have any good suggestions to be able to access documents while in airplane mode?

GoodReader, Documents to Go, Pages, Numbers can all store documents on the iPad.

  • .doc files not opening when emailed

All of the sudden no one on a PC can open my .doc files when I email them. Word is prompting them to install special software to open them...they're coming up as some kind of Japanese text. What's going on??? I haven't ever had this problem before.

I'm not sure why it would have just started. What e-mail application are you using to send your files? Entourage? A Web e-mail client? Apple's own "Mail" program? What application are the recipients using? Some details like that might be helpful to troubleshoot your issue. If you're using Apple's Mail program, you might search/post in the Mail forums here:

  • How do I make Pages the default program?

    Hi,
This may be quite basic, but I can't seem figure it out.
I've just migrated from a PC to a Mac and I have a lot of .doc's. I want to make Pages the default program to open all of my MS Word documents; however, when I select >open with>other>iWork08>Pages, and check the "Always open with" option, it only opens that particular document with Pages, not every .doc file on my computer.
Windows has an "always use for this type of file" option, but I can't find any such thing on my Mac. I have WriteRoom installed and this is somehow the (default) for .doc's, though, I didn't make it that way... just happens to show up first on the list for some reason.
    Thanks!

Point to a .doc file in a window using the Finder. Command-i (or right click, then choose "get info") on any .doc file. Under "Open with" specify Pages then click "change all". This will make all .doc files open with Pages by default.
If you don't like this setting, you can change it back. And bear in mind that opening a .doc file with Pages does not allow you to simply save the file using Pages. You have to save a second file in Pages format (and perhaps may wish to then delete the first .doc file). The fact that Pages doesn't save Word documents "natively" like this can be a pain, but there's no way around it because that's how Pages is designed.

  • Change Icon on .doc

I have gone through the correct procedure to have all the Microsoft Word documents on my Mac open with PAGES and it works correctly however they no longer show the Word icon but show a generic blank icon w/the file. I've turned off the computer and restarted but they still ALL show with this blank generic icon?
How can I get ALL the .doc on my Mac to show the nice PAGES icon?

The question has been asked before, and I do not think there is anything you can do. Pages has no icon defined for Word documents, and therefore the documents stick to the default. Even if they open in Pages, they do not become Pages documents.
