Blank Login Screen?

Today I tried to log into my Macbook like I do everyday and after typing in my password and pressing enter the screen went black. I can see the white hand and can move it around, volume works, etc. However, it will not let me shut it down, nor will it boot up. What should I do?

Glad to hear it is solved, thanks for sharing your soultion and experience here.

  • Blank Login screen - DNS issue

At my company's site we seem to be experiencing an intermittant blank login screen but only for the microsoft sign in page, the Skype sign in page loads up fine.
When skype loads up we get this screen:
And the users choose "Microsoft account". They should then see this screen:
    Instead they get this:
At the bottom there is a warning message saying the following:
"This page contains errors. Go back"
The site is using OpenDNS to filter DNS queries for the PCS and the policy is fairly locked down.
On any affected PC, if I:
    - Close Skype
    - Point the DNS settings to something like 8.8.8.8 (google's DNS server)
    - Load up skype
The login screen (image 2) loads up normally. The user can login and I can then flip back the DNS settings to the OpenDNS server and there are no further issues.
What this means is that Skype is trying to contact a Microsoft/Skype server somewhere on the interent and because it is not on my OpenDNS whitelist it gets blocked and fails like in image 3.
My question is can anyone tell me what the server is? I went through the OpenDNS logs and whitelisted a bunch of microsoft stuff and some other things related to certificates but still no luck.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Evetually I took Techfreak's suggestion and sniffed the packets with wireshark. Was annoyed to discover that the root cause of the issue was suspiciously named sb.symcd.com.
Some quick Google-fu led me to a page which advised that this domain should be whitelisted for Lync installations. Hmm.
Why microsoft could not use more intuitive/descriptive server names is a mystery. Anyway, I whitelisted *.symcd.com and from the limited testing it appears to be resolved.

  • Blank login screen on the iPad keeps popping up and wifi disconnecting after 20 seconds

hi, we have an ipad running IOS 5 that keeps having a blank login screen on the iPad keeps popping up and wifi disconnecting after 20 seconds.
I am yet to find out why this is, any clues?  (note that both apple.com and facebook are blocked at the router, but nothing else)...

actually we cannot due to policy reasons... it appears through testing that the iPad is phoning home and sending private data to Apple regardless, it is also odd they placed these PRIVACY settings in About hidden away so that no-one knows they are there.
From the iPad homescreen, tap on Settings > General > About
Tap on "Diagnostics & Usage" > select "Don't Send"
So... anyone else know why if we block Apple, the iPad disconnects from the internet via Wifi?

  • Upgrade to 4.1 results in blank login screens

So I started with a fresh Windows 2008R2 server and installed 11g (11.2.0.2). Then I got the embedded PL/SQL gateway up and APEX functioning (pre-installed 3.2 version). I ported over an existing 3.2 application schema from a production box and that worked fine. Now I'm trying to upgrade to APEX 4.1 and I'm running into problems.
ran apexins.sql just fine - no problems. Check came up clean (no errors) and upgrade was complete, but when I went to run an application, I get blank pages. My application comes up with the home page, but login doesn't work. The Admin login shows a blank page (view source does indicate a page being generated), as does the Developer login.
I ran epgconfig and it showed the ANONYMOUS user as locked/expired, so I unlocked the account and changed the password, but this didn't do anything. I have tried to run apxldimg to load the images, but it fails each time with the same error:
    SQL> @apxldimg.sql /Install/Oracle/apex_4_1_EN
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.

SQL>I unzipped the files into the G:\Install\Oracle directory and renamed the directory to apex_4_1_EN as it is the English-only download and I had the full version unzipped in the same location. I have tried different versions of the path and even ran the script from the ORACLE_HOME\apex directory in addition to the unzip location - no dice.
    Please help.
PS to Oracle: Why are these upgrades/installations so temperamental? I've been working oracle from 9i up and every single upgrade is a major headache! (probably because the documentation is so cumbersome)

So it would really help in the Oracle documentation if they would provide a completely separate UPGRADE guide as opposed to an INSTALLATION guide, as the instructions are significantly different!
    Here's what to do:
    1. Shut down any APEX-related processes or services including the HTTP server (if you are using it).
    2. Unzip the 4.1 download file to any location of your choosing.
    3. Rename the ORACLE_HOME\apex directory to indicate the version you are currently on (apex -> apex_3_2, etc.)
    4. Copy the entire unzipped folder called apex from the new download to ORACLE_HOME. You should now have TWO apex directories - one versioned for backup purposes.
    5. Now you do the upgrade. Set your prompt to start from within your ORACLE_HOME/apex directory
    a. First run @apexins.sql to install the new schema and all the necessary objects.
    b. Next use the @epgstat tool to show you the status of your installation and users. Make sure the ANONYMOUS user is unlocked and OPEN. Also make sure that you have given permissions to the APEX_PUBLIC_USER and configured access to XMLDB. Change the password to the ADMIN account if necessary.
    c. Now you should be able to run the apxldimg.sql script and have it complete without error. I used the full path of the ORACLE_HOME.
    6. Restart any processes.
    7. Bring up the administration login page at http://localhost:port/apex/apex_admin. (You need to substitute for whatever port value you are using and optionally substitute for localhost.)

  • Empty/blank login screen

Today I opened Skype as I do every morning, so until yesterday everything was working. This morning, there's just an empty, white screen. The contact colums is grey, even if I still have all contacts saved. I can jst open my profile page. I tryed to uninstall and reinstall Skype, but it didn't work. Skype is updated at the last version. I have a MacBook Pro, with Maverick 10.9

It's possible that scripting in your Internet Explorer is disabled by an Antivirus/security software.
What Antivirus/security applications are installed on your computer?
Meanwhile you can try the “legacylogin” workaround, which should enable login to Skype using the old legacy login window. However, you will not be able to login using Microsoft account (email address).
Quit Skype. Make sure that you don’t see any Skype.exe processes in Windows Task Manager. If necessary, then stop these processes.
Open this folder on your computer:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone\
You should see there the Skype application file (Skype.exe).  Right click on the Skype.exe file and select: Send to – Desktop (create shortcut). Right click on the newly created shortcut and select Properties and then the Shortcut tab. In the Target field you will see now:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe"
Click with your mouse on the text in the Target field and move your curser one space after the last quotation sign and add the text /legacylogin. The text in the Target field should now read:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe"  /legacylogin
Click OK to save the changes. Start Skype using this new shortcut. Can you now login to Skype?

  • Blank blue screen and then computer crashes.

I'm having a lot of problems with Skype desktop on a Win 7 64 bit machine.  It has worked fine on this machine until the past few days.
When I call someone the call connects but i get a blank blue screen and cannot interact with Skype.  If I try to access other programmes the computer hangs (the call still continues) and I'm forced to do a hard shutdown.
Also when I go to check the settings it hangs when setting up the web cam.
I've unistalled and reinstalled Skype and the webcam software ensured that I have the latest versions of these and IE.
I have followed the instructions here http://community.skype.com/t5/Windows-desktop-client/Solution-for-empty-blank-login-screen/td-p/1008... and checked that my webcam is operating correctly here http://www.trust.com/en/faq/webcam.
None of this has worked.  Any suggestions as to what I should try next.

  • User accounts no longer show on login screen!

I needed to clean my wireless keyboard after spilling coffee on the desk.... I turn around and next thing I know, the desktop is completely blank, and the picture has changed to default. I pressed every key combo I knew, but could only create other desktops. I had no access to system prefs, Finder or the dock! So I had to press the power button to reboot and when it did,  no user accounts showed up on the login screen! Can not get back in to my iMac! However, the user accounts do show up in safe mode login. But even though I removed all startup items from the User Account config in System Prefs, I still get a blank login screen when I reboot!

Thanks for your help. Restarting in automatic login did get me back into "a" desktop, but it wasn't my normal desktop. It was the blank empty desktop I saw right after the problem started. I could not do anything in this desktop, since there was no dock, no Finder, no System Prefs. Only two empty folders I had created, which could not be opened (open them once, they shoot to the right side, disappear somewhere, but do not open on the desktop). Hitting F3 or F4 to view other desktops did not show my normal desktop - only other empty desktops like the one I was in. But when I tried the Command + F1 combination, that switched me back to my normal desktop! It includes the dock, the system bar and the folders that were on the desktop - plus the new folders I'd created in the empty desktop. But oddly, after 5 seconds of switching into my normal desktop, the background changes itself from what I originally had, to the bubble background of the "empty" desktop.

  • Satellite L500 - blank blue screen after login to Win 7

    Hi
I have this laptop and i can start up the laptop and it loads fine to the login page i then can login but when the screens opens after login it appears as a blank blue screen with the document folder open i have no background picture and no startup menu nothing else except the document folder.
From there i can access my files etc and anything else internet etc everything but i dont know how to get the screen back to normal.
If i go on background display i can see the image that should be on the background and change it but nothing happens on the full screen.
I have no restore point as yet as new laptop for xmas, i do have backup discs but think its just something to do with the display.
If go into files and folders it shows me the icons on the desktop but all i see is this blank screen.
Any ideas please, if not would restore files work or full back up disc
Thanks very much for any help

    Hi
    Check this:
Click right on the desktop and choose Personalize.
There you should check the area: Basis design and design with high contrast
    Choose Windows 7 basic.
    Then reboot the unit.
Usually this should help to get the Windows 7 common design and desktop settings.
But if this will not help then you could use an fast solution which would be a usage of the recovery disk of HDD recovery option.
This would format the HDD and would reinstall everything again

  • Blank WiFi login screen at various public hotspots

Whenever I'm at a public hotspot that requires a login (like, say, a Panera Bread), my iPhone detects the network, then pops up a Login screen. The problem is, that screen remains blank -- I never get as far as being able to actually log in.
I've tried resetting my network settings, resetting my phone, etc. -- no soap.
A possible clue: The *one* time it seemed to work was when there was no available cellular connection. Then the Wi-Fi login screen actually appeared. But when the cellular connection was recovered, I again found myself unable to connect to that Wi-Fi network.
    Help!
    TIA...

OK, I believe I may have solved this
When you can't log into public WiFi ...
    with an iDevice running iOS7…
because the Server times out ...
or the login/registration page just won't load ...
      ********Simply do this***********
Go into settings> WiFi and tap the little info icon for the network you are trying to join
If you see two slider buttons, these are the cause of your woes
One says "Auto Join" (or similar) - you can leave this ON
The second button is "Auto Login" - you must turn this OFF (slide it left so it is grey not green)
Now go back and reselect the network.
If the login page doesn't come up automatically, open a Safari window and enter any address
    Bingo!
I have reproduced this issue and solution in 100% of the public WiFi spots which I could previously not access. Please not that I also have "Block Pop-Ups" turned OFF in Settings> Safari, though I do not know if this is a necessary step.
I have filed a bug report with Apple. Feel free to contact them yourselves if this workaround works for you.
Also, please mark this as "Solved" if it works for you so that others will know how to connect to public WiFi.
    Peace y'all

  • MBP 10,1 - Blank grey screen before login (Landing Zone Dock)

    MBP 10,1, i7 core, 2.4 GHz, 8 Gb
    OS X 10.9.2 (13C64)
Also running VMWare 6 with Win7 Pro when needed
I got the Landing Zone dock in December, and it has been working fine.  An external "vga" monitor connected through the display port, and when needed an HDMI monitor to make 3 with the MBP display.
I always set the MBP display as the login screen.
This week, I started having problems on boot / restore from sleep.
Restoring, the screens are grey and the keyboard is unresponsive, except for the power key (I think except for).
Booting, the blank grey screen comes on after the startup tone, but will not provide the login screen.
When I disengage the dock, the login screen appears.

  • My login screen is blank/solid monochromatic. I can't change it...

Ever since I started messing with secrets pref pan, it's been nothing but trouble. It's supposed to me a GUI too to most common/popular command line hacks. So far it's been 0 for 2.
DS_Store files still propagated to Windows Shares despite hack... think I resolved that with doing hack manually, but what's really bothering me is my login screen. Ever since I changed it to another .png in Secrets it's been blank, a blue/grey hue solid color. Since then I've tried replacing the library file directly with another file, and no go.
I think the location where it looks has changed. I tried doing it the manual way here:
    http://osxdaily.com/2007/02/22/customize-the-mac-os-x-login-screen/
but no go... I can't even see the spacey background anymore. Can anyone help me to get back to square 1?

used terminal command: sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow DesktopPicture "/Users/your_user/Public/myloginwindow.jpg" ommitted 'your_user' in lieu of my username and pic name. Ensured pic is 1280x800 .jpg (does that even make a difference btw); put it in my user public folder; ensured setting took in com.apple.loginwindow.plist; it did; Reboot. Still solid blue background. Sigh... what could be causing this?
BTW, all secrets supposedly does is change this file location, same as sudo command in bash. It's possible the 1st time I did it the pic res didn't match my screen res, should that matter? At worst, I'd think it wouldn't work, but not cause this...
