Blank Menus After Updates

hey there all,
my good friend has a 1.25GHz G4 Mini, running Tiger. a couple of days ago she did an update to what she thinks were QT 7.4.1, Security 2008-001, Java for OS 10.4 release 6, iTunes 7.x, OS 10.4.11(combo). she doesn't update regularly & she says now all of her drop-down menus are blank & when she mouses over them they become blue. also there's no text appearing when she mouses over icons in the Dock. i talked her through resetting the PRAM & getting to Disc Utility to repair permissions, but she said the dialog box for it was empty/blank.... anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is & how to fix it? there is an Apple Store in town... should it go to the Genius Bar?

This sounds suspiciously like a prebinding issue - prebinding is the linking of executable files and their libraries (similar to Prefetch in XP) and if it gets out of date, the system will behave oddly. Prebinding can be disturbed if the system is being used while an update is installed (in Tiger and earlier, when the install dialog reports 'optimizing system' it is in fact rebuilding prebinding), so if it's in use during that stage of the installer, prebinding may not be correctly updated. However it could also be a font problem, since damaged, duplicate or missing fonts can cause MacOS to display incorrectly.
First thing I would do is to download and run an applications called YASU (http://jimmitchell.org/projects/yasu/) set it to all tasks and let it run and reboot the system. The reboot will take longer than normal, but amongst the other routine maintenance tasks it will accomplish, it will update prebinding.
Once rebooted, if the problem persists, Font Book (in Applications) may help identify and resolve conflicting or damaged fonts - assuming when it is run, any text appears in the application's window!
If not, then download and run a copy of Preferential Treatment (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22790) and set it to check both system and user level files. This software is capable of identifying and removing damaged or corrupt property list (.plist) files which case cause curious problems of this sort.
Lastly, a useful troubleshooting tip in these situations is to create a new user account on the system and test using that. If the new account doesn't suffer the problem, it means the issue is caused within the specific user's settings or properties, and the new account can be used to help troubleshoot that (or indeed, to continue use of the system). If the new account suffers the same issue, then it means the problem is caused at the system level.
If these simple steps don't help, then it may be time to enlist the help of the Apple store genius bar, but it is critical that all user data is backed up first, just to be on the safe side!

Blank screen after update (KMS related?)

After the last kernel update I got a blank screen at boot. I'm not sure, but I think it happens when KMS kicks in. I think it's related to a broken EDID I've been fighting for months. The stop-gap measure I'd been using so far is to have a custom config in xorg.conf.d and booting to a DM, but that doesn't seem to work with the new kernel.

Is there anything I can do to fix this problem once and for all?

I can confirm that this is definitely caused by KMS. It doesn't make any difference whether I'm using nouveau or the proprietary drivers, but I can get into a login prompt by adding nomodeset to the kernel parameters. It's been suggested to set the resolution manually like this:
video=VGA-1:1280x1024@75
And that does set the resolution, but I end up getting a blank screen anyway.
I've switched to linux-lts for now, but obviously this is not a permanent solution. Does anyone have any idea of what I should do? There doesn't appear to by any definitive information about what to do when KMS fucks up.

Blank screen after update to 10.3.1

I have a Z10 which has a totally blank screen now.... not quite sure what is going on as the backlight works, but nothing is coming up on the screen.
I have connected it to Link and even tried downgrading the software... but still nothing... I got an autoloader of 10.3.1 and everything seems to upload fine Link just says that it is in setup mode and to finish that on the device...
I would love to... but the screen is totally blank. I took the cover off to check the screen connections..... that seems to be fine....
I am at a loss..... any thoughts?

An update on this one... I guess I have the same problem as the Z30's... I was EXTREMELY impressed by Blackberry and Rogers for a very brief moment when they gave me a code for a swap out at a store... so I went to the store and they couldn't figure out what to do so I had to call back Rogers... all in I am 6 hours into the phones with Rogers.
I guess they are just directing everyone to BB for this issue even though none of us can use our phones. I am told that because I am out of warranty (a one year warranty) that I am up a creek....
Interesting as this update was pushed to our phones and that caused the issue... not anything that I did at all.
For shame Blackberry... I am giving one more chance for something good to happen... this is my.... oh goodness.... 8th Blackberry? Loyal since the trackball =) Perhaps its time to end this relationship...

The issue appears when clicking on a menu item from the top of chrome, and if there is a list then the blue highlighting of each item as the cursor moves down only highlights every second item instead of every item as normal.
I have had this happen in the past but was unsure which package was the culprit. I don't know from the above list which package update may have been responsible, but since the same effect has been seen on 4 different machines I presume it is likely kdebase-workspace? This is with KDE as the desktop environment, and with all packages up to date. Has anyone else seen this issue and if so is there a workaround or is it a known bug. It is an odd one to google for but presumably I am not the only one who has seen this issue. The version of chrome is chrome stable google-chrome 36.0.1985.125-1

I have no idea what the root cause is but if you turn off compositing (Alt+Shift+F12), it'll stop. You can use the Window Rules KCM to make a rule that'll automatically stop/start compositing when Chromium is started. Sadly, this is a poor workaround as you lose all the niceties that compositing brings You can also change KWin's render mode from OpenGL to Raster but that's too intrusive for me - I'd rather just disable compositing as a whole. I'm using a laptop with an HD4000 set to use the default SNA acceleration.

All pdf files open as a blank page after updating to 11.0.07.

Ever since I updated to AR 11.0.07 in Windows 7 I get a blank page (empty gray box) when opening any pdf. This happens whether the pdf was on my hard drive or received in email. The files open just fine in other pdf programs and they used to open just fine in prior versions of AR. Please help?

Have you tried to download the files (typically right click on the link) and open them in Acrobat that way, rather than the plugin to the browser. There may also be an issue with the browser. You did not mention the browser you are using, but might try FireFox or such (assuming you are currently using IE).

Server Monitor shows blank locations after update

This a refurb xserve 2.8 single processor, 16 gigs of RAM, no raid, LOM firmware 1.1.2.
If I reset LOM to "factory defaults" and erase and install Server OS 10.5.4. LOM shows the various locations under "Memory", "Drives","Power","Network", "Temperature", and "Blowers".
As it should.
However once I upgrade the OS to 10.5.7 using the "combo updater", Server Monitor no longer displays any locations under Power, Network, Temperature, and Blowers.
I have deleted the plists for Server Monitor and the BMC cache file but still no locations.
I have gone round and round with this and have been able to duplicate it. It seems to hinge on the 10.5.7 update and updating directly from 10.5.4.
I have found if I install the Server Admin Tools 10.5.6v1.1 after the combo 10.5.7 update then Server Monitor displays correctly. I can then install the Server Admin Tools 10.5.7 and have full functionality of Server Monitor.

OK, I get it..... You need a Lights Out Management port to run Server Monitor, and there's no way to set that up on our little experimental Intel Mini running Snow Leopard Server.
So this shouldn't be an issue when we install Snow Leopard Server on our production Xserve 8-core Xeon. Good to know.

FF16.0.2, after updating flash plugin to 11.5.502.110, all flash content went blank, reinstall dint work.

After updating my shockwave flash player to 11.5.502.110, the flash content on pages went white blank, i can still see the bounding box of the flash content, but they are all white blank. When i right click on the content, flash context menu is not showing up as usual.
tried uninstall (from windows control panel) and reinstall, didnt work.

Flash 9 r45 is way too old and a lot of Flash content won't work with such an old version.<br />
If you want to revert to an older Flash version then get the latest Flash 10.3 version that is still maintained with security updates

The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great steps for troubleshooting issues with an iPhone not turning on:
iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.

After updating my Flash Player, the Auto Vector Mask window is now just a blank window.

You can replace the "Auto Vector Mask" SWF file present at the "Fireworks installation folder/Configuration/Commands/Creative/Auto Vector Mask.swf ".
If this doesn't work, then one of the reasons that it could be happening is if Firebug or Flash Firebug is installed.
If you have either of those, can you uninstall them and relaunch Fireworks.
Let me know if it works.

I would love to say that a refresh worked for me however it did not.It takes about 30 Minutes total I was able to trace part of the issue to a Registry Key that was tagging the processor. Because my BIOS manages its own temp gauge and windows is trying to
build on in I had to turn the BIOS one off as well as for some reason I get better funtionality with Visualization off.
I am still dealing with a lag but I was able to get ride of the freeze that made the computer completely useless.

Blank screen after boot - After update.

Hello!
I have the following problem with my arch dist:
I recently - and after several weeks without touching it - updated my arch but, after rebooting, the laptop screen went blank just after booting up. Using the fallback boot resulted in the same ... well.. result. This is as much as i can describe since i don´t know how to access a comand line in this context, in order to test/check what´s going on. Anyone can help me?

Assuming you are using grub, you can edit /boot/grub/menu.lst when grub is loading, in order to force it to not boot into X. On boot, select your normal arch linux entry from to boot list (don't press enter) and type e to edit the menu.lst Press e again on the kernel line and append this number:
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda3 resume=/dev/sda5 ro 1
Press enter and then you boot it by pressing b. It is the number at the end that defines the run level, in this case 1 (single user). This will allow you to boot into console as root.

Blank screen after KitKat update

I just completed the KitKat update on an Ellipsis 7 tablet that's connected to Verizon's network, but now I'm only getting a blank screen after the welcome screen displays. Fyi: the first part of this update went smoothly. Can anyone can help me resolve this issue? I really like this tablet and use it everyday.

I contacted Verizon support and a couple of techs attempted to walk me through alternate boot methods. However, as bassclarinetl2 noted, "pressing the power button to turn the device off results in the device powering up by itself and both 'safe mode' and 'factory reset' are inaccessible via their button combinations." Therefore, I'm sending my tablet in to be repaired or replaced under warranty. Depending on how long you've had your Ellipsis 7 tablet, you may be able to do the same.
Incidentally, I have another (seemingly) identical Ellipsis 7 tablet and was able to successfully install the KitKat upgrade on this second tablet, which I'm using now. The sooner Verizon determines why the upgrade worked on one tablet and not the other, the better.

Not sure whether you have tried these methods, if yes, keep trying the others.
1.Run IE with no add-ons firstly.
Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Internet Explorer (with no add-ons).
If works, please follow the steps to narrow down which add-on cause the issue.
Start IE>Press Alt to show the menu bar>On the Tools menu, click manage add-ons>under show, click All add-ons>disable half add-ons one time for quick narrow down>restart IE.
2.Try resetting IE.
Start IE>Press Alt to show the menu bar>On the Tools menu, click Internet options>Advance>Reset>restart IE.
3. This is caused due to some registry problems occurred. To resolve this issue, follow the below steps:
Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.
Type regsvr32 actxprxy.dll in the Open box, and then click OK.
If the command was successfully executed, you will receive the message ‘DllRegisterServer in actxprxy.dll succeeded’ window.
Restart the Internet Explorer
4.if still not work, run system restore.
Start>type system restore in the search box>click system restore>follow the steps in the wizard to choose a restore point.
