Blank, now garbled video in quicktime osx

I have a Samsung SC-MX20 camera, play perfectly in QuickTime Player 7.6 but the video is blank (black) in quicktime X, up until I upgraded to 10.6.4. Now the video is garbled. Funny thing is it plays fine on my (older) imac. Computer is a macbook (non firewire), late 2008 model.
Thoughts?
Rick

I'm having the same problem (no video when I open a MP4 or other video in QuickTime Player). However, I can view videos in iTunes. Candydrop's list is mostly my list too, but I don't have: AC3MovieImport.component or Perian.component.
I do have these that CandyDrop doesn't:
AppleMPEG2Codec.component
DivX Decoder.component
FLV.component
So to sum up, this is my list:
AppleIntermediateCodec.component
AppleMPEG2Codec.component
DivX Decoder.component
Flip4Mac WMV Advanced.component
Flip4Mac WMV Export.component
Flip4Mac WMV Import.component
FLV.component
Any ideas? This is a huge problem for me and I have to have it solved by the end of the day! Ack!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.

  • How do I fix error code 401 - "unauthorized" I am taking an online class and the videos worked before, and now whenever I launch QuickTime, I get that error code.

I recently began taking an online class. We are required to watch multiple videos. I was able to watch the QuickTime videos before, but now whenever I launch the videos in QuickTime I get the Error code 401. My teacher does not know whats wrong, because I do have authorization to watch the videos, I am just not sure how to go about it.

You may try updating the same as a standalone download.

Since you haven't answered any question yet, I'll add another to the list.
What version of OS X were you running prior to the upgrade?

i updated my computer to the os x and now i can't export my videos to quicktime i got the new compressor still won't let me please somebody help

You need to update the software. This is a very old version that will not work with the current OS. Did you purchase the software from the App Store? If do sign in with the Apple ID used to buy it. Go to the Purchases page and find the software.

    Many thanks.
With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:
Apple software on Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store
(If there's a SpeedBit LSP showing up in Autoruns, it's usually best to just uninstall your SpeedBit Video Accelerator.)

  • Convert Youtube video into Quicktime?

I am in the process of learning how to use "Keynote '09" (Version 5.3). Is there anyway to convert an youtube video into Quicktime, so that I can play the youtube video in my keynote presentation? I would not want to purchase any expensive softwares or apps for it because I do not use keynote for business but just for my community volunteer work.

Since Google seems to 'own' all videos posted on YouTube most video extractors for YouTube, once widely available, no longer work.
So your question is really moot at this point - I don't know of any way, now, to even download YouTube videos. You could always use ScreenFlow (or a similar product) to 'capture' the video and sound, but that (according to Google) would violate their terms of use for YouTube videos.
    Sorry,
    Clinton

  • Deleted quicktime x, now I cant download quicktime 7! Can anybody help me

I deleted quicktime x, I'm a video editor and a friend told me not to bother with it. Now I cant download quicktime 7 because it's saying that Quicktime x is already installed! When I try to search for any old remaining quicktime x files to delete, I can't find any. I'm on a deadline, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

have you trashed the com.apple.QuicktimePlayerX.plist in home/library/preferences ?
In fact, before trashing, just move it to your desktop, keep it and if that does not work, do the same with your com.apple.quicktime.plist (you may find one on the same folder, and there may be another one in your startupdisk/library/preferences.
This is always a good solution before deleting anything for good, as you can see if everything works normally (if not, just move the plists back into their respective positions one by one).

  • Trimming video files on OSX not iOS

Hello im very concerned cos im trying to write a method for trimming HD video files (on oSX not iOS) into 3 seconds file but i can´t find anything useful can anyone help me please?

Well, you can use iMovie and/or Quicktime for trimming videos - those are two, but there is also MPEG Streamclip which can also be used.
If you will use any of these apps and learn how to do it, you can write the instructions. There are also help files accessible in the File Menu > Help within the apps.

  • ImageJ in Yosemite can not import video from QuickTime plugin

    Thank you Benjt and Sue:
I have first chosen to followed Sue's suggestion concerning the firewire connections since that looked to be the one most easily done quickly. I therefore had to make more room on the hard drive in my MacBook Pro since the drive is only 100 GB. I normally use an external 400GB drive to hold my video files since one of the plays last May required about 200GB! However, the play this time was a short one and not really High Density anyway like the one was in May with a much finer camera. I have been connecting the external HD via Firewire800.
I simply moved a number of files from my MacBook Pro drive and put them in the external HD as well as another HD and then disconnected the external HD from my MacBook. I was, indeed, able to import the entire tape in one shot into iMovie. iMovie is still not working right since I found that I had to click "import" in iMovie to start collecting a clip and then hit "play" on my camcorder to actually import the tape contents into the clip. I found the whole play, just 50 min this time, in that clip when we returned home this evening.
I can now get the editing done one their last play for the kids and have DVDs for them when I go back up to Gainesville to record their current play on Thursday evening.
I will then devote some time to trying to solve the rest of the problem, looking into Benjt's suggestions.
Thanks very much for your very timely critical and positive help this afternoon. For your information, I also have been working on learning Final Cut Express but as I tried to put all of my reading into practice, I now I can't even get FCE to open - but that's another story and a very different problem.
    Thanks again.

  • Audio but no video for Quicktime in Safari-help?

When I open a Quicktime file in Safari, only the audio will play---blank screen for video. I can play the video in an AOL browser, but not Safari-this only started with the newest upgrade . Anyone else have this problem? Thanks for any solution.

    Thanks again, QuickTimeKirk.
I think the audio rate was to blame. I changed the audio format in QuickTime Player 7 Pro from (I think) Linear PCM to AAC and the kbps number from the default value 128 to 64. Then I changed the mark for the video rate from automatic to the option of setting a limit and set a suitable limit. That way I was able to control the total kbit/second rate for the exported .mov file so that it got a reasonable size.
When I compare the source .flv file with the produced .mov file for the case when they have about the same total kbit/second rate, I can see that the .mov file is smoother or has less detail than the .flv file although the difference is not big. Increasing the video rate limit in QuickTime Player 7 Pro causes a bigger .mov file with better quality to be produced.

  • Restoring Deleted Sections of Video In Quicktime Pro 7

Does anyone know if you can restore the deleted sections of video in quicktime pro. I selected in & out points on a video then clicked save, instead of save as,(did not mean to do that) and it deleted most of my video, when i did not want to delete, just pull out the section where my in & out points were.
So I'm trying to restore the orig. video and that was the only copy, so I have no where else to go and retrieve it. If anyone would know if it is possible to restore the video you have cut but forgot to save orig. file. I would appreicate any help on this.. Thx....

IF I use system restore to a restore point before I cut video would that possibly get original video file back? Reply from quicktimekirk says it's gone for good, but not sure if he has ever tried the system restore to get back to a time before video was cut. Any help greatly appreicated,I only had 1 original file copy of video file I'm trying to restore. I did back it up on dvd when first recorded,so I still have that, but I'm trying to restore the original .mov video file. Thanks and I'll remember from now on to back up any file I'm working on. Thanks again..........

  • Cannot play iTunes video in QuickTime ("computer not authorized")

A few weeks ago I found a work-around to the vide/audio out-of-sync issue with iTunes 10, and that was to play videos through QuickTime, which I was able to do.  Until today.  Now QT won't play videos, saying the computer isn't authorized.  I go to iTunes, authorize the computer (over and over and over) and QT still won't play.  Then when I play the video through iTunes, I have to authorize it the video again and then it begins playing (but of course, video/audio will eventually become out of sync as always...).  Any ideas on why QT won't play the videos now or what is making it believe this computer is not authorized?  I've de-authorized/re-authorized, I've changed User Account Controls and deleted an "SC" file (the latter two were part of an Apple (un)solution found here ).  I'm still at a loss and frustrated beyond belief.
    I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit

I have the same scenario too, running Windows 8.1 on my HP Pavilion p7-1007c Desktop PC. However, as I found out, a few iTunes purchases can be fully played on QuickTime for Windows without warning.
Apple should update QuickTime for Windows as soon as possible in order to correct this iTunes authorization bug.

  • How do you rotate videos in Quicktime 10.0?

I shot video vertically and would like to show it horizontal but can't figure out how to rotate the video in Quicktime Player 10.0. I find help information on earlier versions but they don't seem to apply in this version.

It always comes down to spending money doesn't it? Thanks for your help. I was planning to move to Lion soon anyway, guess I'll do it sooner now.

  • Upgrade of our 10.4.11 laptop to 10.5 is accomplished and we now need to upgrade Quicktime and iTunes; however, the user name and password is now not working after the upgrade to 10.5.

Object is to sync address and calendar between laptop with Max OS 10.4.11 and iPhone. Upgrade of our 10.4.11 laptop to 10.5 is accomplished and we now need to upgrade Quicktime and iTunes; however, the user name and password for the laptop is now not working after the upgrade to 10.5., though it was working prior to the upgrade, for file sharing.

@ BDAqua > I tried your suggestion but no luck. holding opt+command just gave me a blue screen and it rebotted, pushing the disk out of the drive. Yes, the macbook has 1 gb of ram. I realize that the min req. call for 2 gb of ram so i've got an order in for another dimm to put into the machine. Thanks for your suggestions.
@ a_brody > Yes. The machine was plugged into a power source. The disk promts you to do that and i recall aspect this form other installs. Thanks for the reminder tho! ( btw your second post is like greek to me man!)
@ Kuncklesmac > You're right about Snow Leopard being an upgrade from Leopard. I'm aware of this. And yes previously i've been told by Apple that I needed the Box Set (not the family pack.  i am using the family pack for OS Snow Leopard) to upgrade my 10.4.11 mac - they never mentioned adding ram but i figured that out on my own and an apple specialist recommended it when i purchased Snow Leopard and confirmed that I coul duse the Snow Leopard to upgarde from Tiger (10.4.11). I've also read extensively (as i said above) that it isn't necessary (always) to buy the box set. Several 10.4.11 users report having upgraded using the Snow Leopard upgrade disk only (not the Box Set) without trouble on intel macs (also see the apple link i posted). So i'm just ondering how they did it and i cannot.
    Thanks fo rall yor help!
