Blank out Display?

Hi there!
When I am listening to music on my notebook, I do not really need the display. So I was currently thinking about turning it off. Is there an easy way to completely blank out the display? I am running a Zepot Znote 6214w with an nvidia7600 with the latest drivers installed.
thx in advance
armin

This does the trick for me. Immediately turns screen back on mouse or key input.

A reply from service would indicate this a feature of the 6070, back light being turned off. The time out cannot be altered. This feature is unsatisfactory as it times out too soon for slow fingers!

OK--so this is an original MBP. You are in the late 2008-early 2009 section of the forum, so I am going to request that your post be relocated to the original MBP section.
Have you tried an external display? If you get good graphics on an external, it will be further conformation that the graphics chip is OK.
I am puzzled as to why the original display worked, but two separate replacements did not. I have heard of the brightness indicator getting stuck all the way to the left, so that the display remains black. Can you see the desktop at all by shining a bright light through the apple? If so, maybe you could go to System preferences>Desktop and see if the slider is stuck, and if so, move it to the right.
    Good luck!

After a random amount of time, usialy a fiew minutes after the computer starts, the display turns of.
This happens in the BIOS menu, the live arch tty, arch tty and gnome.
This does not happen if i boot into windows or a Ubutu live cd.
When the display blanks out in a tty i am still able to interact with it,  eg: if i blindly type 'reboot[enter]' the stystem reboots, ore 'man[space]ls[up][up]' computer peeps.
When the display blanks out in Gnome the keyboard gets disabled aswell.
I am able to ssh into the computer if it blanks out while i am runnig arch.
When the computer blanks out nothing but a hardware shutdown and restart seams to turn on the dispaly again. doing a reboot comand (while blanked out) thorugh ssh causes the computer to reboot but the display is still disabled after the reboot.

It might be some motherbord fiture that blanks out the screen, what is curious though is thet Windows and Ubuntu never blankout, not even temporarely. So there must be somthing that can be done from the OS side.
Another weird thing is that I would exect it to blank out when the user input is inactive if it was a pawer saving fiture, but it usialy blanks out while i am typing.
I am grateful for all the help I can get.

  • PXI 8176 Controller Display Blanks Out.

The Monitor goes on standby (blanks out) randomly while my computer is still on. I've narrowed the problem down to the controller. I just want to know what options I have. Is there a part in the controller itself that I can replace?

I face the same problem with PXI 8196. The whole system hangs up but power supply still ok. HD LED also not lights up.

  • I just upgraded to Lion 10.7.2 and it says that it will not support Power PC programs so my 2008 version of Mac Office and Intuit Quickbooks are blanked out.  I need these programs.  How do I proceed?

I just upgraded to Lion 10.7.2 and it says that it will not support Power PC programs and has blanked out my 2008 version of MS Office for Mac and Intuit's Quickbooks.  How do I proceed to get these programs back?

Upgrade to newer versions compatible with Lion or downgrade to Snow Leopard:
    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • MacBook Pro/Thunderbolt Monitor blanking out

I have a MacBook Pro with 2 Thunderbolt monitors.  My system is connected up like this:
MacBook Pro (running in clamshell mode) -------> Thunderbolt Port on MBP -------> Thunderbolt Display ------> Built in Display Thunderbolt Cable ------>Thunderbolt Display 2.
I also have a Thunderbolt disk drive attached to a thunderbolt port on the back of display 2.
I have a couple of problems every now and then.  At times that second display blanks out for a second.  I have noticed, it is most likely to happen when I put some IO on that thunderbolt disk drive.  It just seems to me like the bandwidth of thunderbolt should be able to handle this.
Secondly.  Sometimes when I boot up, the system considers that second display as the first which screws up my screens.  I usually have to reboot to get it to work right.  I notice that if I boot up with my MBP open, the system always considers the 2nd monitor in the chain the first display. Seems like it would always default to the first monitor.
Any help you could provide would be appreciated,
    Rob

The Thunderbolt drive should be the first device on the chain, with the Displays being the last devices on the chain.
That should solve both of the problems.
If not, call back or post in the Apple Thunderbolt Display forum.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Screen continually blanks out

I have a 20GB ipod, about four months old. Recently the screen has started blanking out randomly, and for long periods of time. It still plays music, but is practically impossible to use because the screen is so unpredictable.
Could it be something to do with the battery?

I've just noticed in another topic that the DVI output from Macs is 'exclusive' to Apple Cinema Displays, and can only be used with third-party display via a DVI - VGA adapter. This would make sense in relation to the other post on this subject elsewhere, where the poster talks about resolving the problem with the VGA adapter, although he thought this indicated the DVI cable was dodgy... I've not seen this issue coming up in any other discussion/post here or elsewhere where various third-party (and Dell) displays are discussed.
In addition to the circumstances listed above in my earlier post, I've now noticed that the problem is at its worse when viewing a web page with Flash content - constantly updating/changing animations and effects...
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

  • X220 Screen Blanking out

    Hi,
I have a problem on my X220 where the screen blanks out.
    Here's how it happens.
First, the system hangs, noticably (like freezes for about half a second)
Then the screen goes completely black
    And then comes back on
None of my programs are closed or reset (Chrome, Gtalk etc.) and only thing that seems to be different is that the Lenovo Power Manager/Wireless Manager Icons seem to have reset.
Anybody know what could be causing this?
(if it matters, I have my pagefile disabled, but have 8GB of ram installed.  I closely monitor my ram usage and it has never been above 4.2 GB)

    AT: tocirahl
I had the same issue you describe. After booting into WIndows the system blanks a few times and eventually hangs. Sometimes I can just see a popup appearing showing "Display driver has stopped responding and has recovered".
The strange thing is that my system has this issue ever since I got yhe machine and first powered it on. Even completion of the factory windows installation was not possible due to this crash. I found out that when the Graphics Driver was installed the system would crash.
I have send it back for repair yesterday and I am still waiting to hear the cause of this blanking/crashing issue. Quite anoying because the system is not usable at all.
Any suggestions what this issue can be?!

  • Monitor backlight comes on briefly, then blanks out

I'm using a COMPAC PRESARIO laptop that's running WINDOWS XP.  I've had the system 7 years & had a couple viruses that were supposedly cleaned up, but it was done by someone else so I'm not sure of this.
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION & CORRECTION EFFORTS TO DATE:
When the computer is turned on the COMPAC logo comes up, but soon blanks out, though not thoroughly on occasion, just goes real dark, with images faintly visible.  Unfortunately, the behavior is not consistent, sometimes not lighting at all, other times as previously described, not visible at all, or visible up to WINDOWS logo page, then blank.  If power is disconnected for 48 hours or better it will sometimes remain visible for a period of time, so long as it doesn't enter hibernation mode, though that trick hasn't worked recently; then the above problems repeat.  I have connected a COMPAC FS7600 monitor to it to see if it is indeed a monitor problem, but that also blanks out after WINDOWS logo displays, prior to reaching log-in stage, the monitor power button going from the green it has while visible to the amber that signals a disconnect (I think).  I've been forced to do hard shutdowns repeatedly, resulting in the "Windows encountered a problem with the last start-up" & have tried the "last working configuration" option, but that hasn't helped, so I'm at a loss on what to try next.
One of the answers here indicated the backlight could be replaced.  If so, how would I go about that if it comes to that?
I am a freelance illustrator & writer, whose work & income depend on a working system, so I'm currently unable to produce the products clients desire; as such, this problem is imperative to correct.  Any & all assistance will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

    Hello @darenderer ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you're having issues with the display on your notebook going blank.
If the issue persists on an external monitor chances are the issue is not hardware related, though when it goes dim and is barely visible that does sound like a bad backlight which is kind of strange.
We can test this by trying to load the BIOS. If the BIOS loads and displays properly this would tell us the hardware is OK. To access the BIOS tap F10 while the notebook boots up. If this is displaying OK you may need to restore the default BIOS settings which is usually done with F9 while in the BIOS. You should see the keyboard shortcut in the bottom right corner of the screen to confirm this shortcut.
If the BIOS does not display you could be looking at a hardware issue. The issue being intermittent like this might suggest a bad connection to the backlight or display. You can see how to remove and reconnect these connections in the Maintenance and Service guide available in the User Guides section of your products support page here: HP - Drivers & Downloads.
It would help to know which product and operating system you are using. For information on finding your product and model numbers click here: How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number? To see which version of Windows you are using click here: Which Windows operating system am I running?
Let me know if this helps!
Please click the "Kudos, Thumbs Up" at the bottom of this post if you want to say "Thanks" for helping!
Please click "Accept as Solution" if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

  • MacBook Pro 9,1 External Monitor Blanks Out?

I have a 15-inch, Mid 2012 MacBook Pro with a 2.3 GHz i7 processor, which I purchased last December. For some reason my external monitors blank out about 1-3 times per day. As far as I can tell the symptons are not reproducable. It just seems to randomly happen.
Has anyone else had this problem and if so, what was the solution?
    Thanks!

Are you sure it is not a hardware problem? A bad cable or a poor connection?
I would try this after eliminating hardware causes.
Go to System Preferences / Displays. Verify the settings are correct, and correct or not change them arbitrarily - just move the settings back and forth - and then set them back where you want them.
    Now reset the PRAM:
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

my iphone blanked out and will not cut on i tried holding the power button and the home button any advice?

    Hey there mello12,
It sounds like you are not able to turn on your phone. You should use these steps in the following article to help resolve it, or setup service if needed:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3281
Let it charge for at least twenty minutes, then see if it starts normally.
If there is no image on the screen, press the Sleep/Wake button to attempt to wake the device.
If the screen displays a red battery icon, continue charging the device until the battery is fully charged. Learn more about charging iPhone and iPod touch, or iPad.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more aboutrestoring iOS software.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • Vista: Flash CS3 literally flashes then blanks out toolboxes

Something very annoying occurs in Flash CS3, and sometimes
other Adobe products like Photoshop CS3. When pressing down the
mouse button for a while (i.e. when dragging something), Flash
suddenly flashes once and blanks out all toolboxes. Hovering over
the toolboxes makes the items reappear. Minimizing then maximizing
Flash also works, which makes me wonder if Vista's display drivers
are the cause. It happens randomly in Photoshop, but in Flash I can
actually trigger this by holding down the mouse button for a few
    seconds, so
    here's
    a video.
Very very annoying, having to minimize/maximize your
application every five minutes. Any ideas?

I haven't been clicking things fast. It happens when I try to save. It's not random. I've spent a decent amount of time on google and haven't found a solution. There are a lot of results about freezing and crashing, but I haven't found any on freezing due to saving.
I know it should be fine, but that's what's weird about it. It shouldn't be freezing like this and it's at a point where it's not something I can ignore.

  • T41 Screen blanking out

I have a 4 year old T41 which has been a solid and reliable machine. In the last couple of weeks, the display has been blanking out after a few minutes. I have it hooked up with a second monitor. Another posting suggested closing the lid and opening it again, which works, but again only for a few minutes. I recently downloaded XP SP3. Is there any relationship here, or is it simply that the screen is wearing out?
I can't find any download on the Lenovo site which addresses this issue. Suggestions or the name of a good repair shop in New York City?

Pinkish/reddish tint on initial boot is a dead giveaway for a failing backlight. Nothing else produces this symptom.
If you're handy the backlight is replaceable, but is quite a tedious job.
Swapping the whole LCD may be an easier proposition.
The service that I personally use for this type of repair is not cheap, and has a long waiting list, but I'd have no issues recommending it to you should you choose to take that route.
Good luck and let us know.
