Blank photo file in recovered photos in photo library

Every time I open iphoto I initially get a message that I have exactly "17 photos that have been found and have not been imported to the iPhoto library. . . would you like to import them? " This message comes up twice. If I press "yes" nothing is imported. If I press "no" an empty photo files is stored in a recovered photo file in the iPhoto library. Eventually I have piles and piles of empty files that I have to delete. How can I avoid this?

I am having the same problem with my iMac. I open up iPhoto and it says that i have 18 recovered photos and wants to know if i want to import them. No matter what i do pressing yes or no it still pops up every time i open iPhoto. The folders marked recovered photos appears(which are empty) one after another. At this point i don't care about the 18 photos because i don't even know what or where they are. I think when i transferred my photos, music, etc from my external hard drive something happened. I just want to stop the recovered photos pop up every time i open up iphoto. By the way I have tried opening up the iphoto library and theres no import/import folder. Can you please help me?

Haha yes i forgot that you may not be using Apples Mail. Lets try the export then file>export, then under the heading "format" click JPG. Then click "scale images no larger then:" in the width field type "800" then the height field should change by itself. Thats what i do for emailing, it's usually the best trade between quality & size, that should be small enough to email. Best wishes JAG
P.S. when you first click "scale images no larger then" what's already in the width height fields? thats your actual photo resolution.

For downloaded files see Niel's answer, and for many other applications you are free to pick a folder in the finder to store the photos. The default folder, where most applications will look for photos is your Pictores fold run your Home folder.

I had this problem some months ago and the following solution from Terrence Delvin put things right:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. *Make no other changes*.
Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If it does then look inside that folder on your desktop. Does it contain anything you want? If not you can trash the folder.
However, since connecting a memory stick to my computer, I now have the same problem again. This time there is no folder called 'Import' or 'Importing' so what should I do?

Like many others in this forum, I just upgraded to iWork/iLife '06. When I installed iPhoto '06 it trashed my existing iPhoto Folder and placed all of my other existing photos (those not already imported previously into iPhoto) into a recovered photos file. I tried and tried and tried to import those "recovered photos" into iPhoto but it kept returning an error message on import "Unreadable file"
Finally I selected the "recovered files" then clicked on "Get Info" and found that the permissions were "locked" with a padlock icon. Clicking once on the padlock opened the permissions back to me the "owner" and the iPhoto allowed me to import all of those 425 "recovered photos". Whew! I hope this tip helps someone else out - I had to figure this out on my own...

The fact that you can use the Raws from your XSi is of no relevance.
The Raw from every model of camera is different. Note: that's every model not every brand. So, the NEF produced by a Nikon D40 is not the same as the NEF produced by a D60, the CR2 produced by a Canon 350 is not the same as the CR2 produced by a Canon 400.
Changing the Raw specification is one of the ways of upgrading the cameras.
IPhoto and Aperture support - or don't - the same cameras.

Can I pay someone to access it? Long story short, everything was saved to my external hard drive except my photos, by mistake of course.

You have to stop using the drive immediately. Completely stop. Do not boot the computer from the drive.
File recovery software: Try using an application such as Data Rescue 3 - http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php or FileSalvage - http://subrosasoft.com, or one of the ones listed in the (old) link below. Some have free trial versions that let you see if the software will help before you decide to buy. You will also need a second hard drive equal to or larger in size than your first drive as a destination drive for recovered files.

It is critical that you do not use the computer or even turn it on until you have rescued your files. Files only have the directory reference to them removed when you empty the trash or otherwise delete them from a computer (unless you use secure erase, in which case they are gone forever or can only be potentially be recovered by very expensive means) and are still present on the computer. However, their space is marked as available to any other file creation done on the computer (even done by you booting the computer) and there is risk that your files will be overwritten by the computer.
Even if the above works, do not expect the results to be pretty or even 100% successful. Files will often lose their names and you will have to re-name them one by one.

Recovered Photos File

I actually have two issues which may or may not be related. When I start up my iphoto 6 I always get a message that I have 4895 photos that have not been imported, I always select do not import because I am not missing any photos. I had seen on the discussions that the problem could be in my iPhoto libaray under a file called recovered photos.
I have about 12,000 photos in my library the size of my library is listed as 66.7 GB. When I check the size of the recovered photos file it is listed as 24.5 GB. The file includes movie clips, jpeg files, iMovie titles, and various other files. Most of the materials are dated as far back as 2004 which is strange since I created this iPhoto library in May of 2006 and did not import any previous materials into it. Would it be wise to delete this folder?
I am always fearful of doing anything to my library, such as updating thumbnails as long as things are working fine.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That is strange, indeed. I wonder how iMovie projects ended up in your iPhoto Library.
If I understand you correctly, this "Recovered Photos" folder is inside your iPhoto Library folder. Just move it out of there to your desktop. Also, if there is an "Importing" folder inside your iPhoto Library folder, move it out as well. Then launch iPhoto and see if that error message appears or not.
If the error returns, you can try the auto library rebuild. Launch iPhoto while holding Option and Command. Check all 4 options, then leave it to work. It will probably take quite a while, since you have a large library. It would be wise to make a duplicate of the Library6.iPhoto file before rebuilding. Use Finder to select this finder, then File > Duplicate to create a copy. If the rebuild goes wrong, you replace the file with its copy.
You can use Finder to examine the contents of the "Recovered Photos" folder after you have moved it out of the iPhoto library. Trash unneeded files. Import wanted files into iPhoto.

TS3745 iphoto keeps creating a recovered photo file

Everytime I open iphoto it says there are photos that have not yet been imported. Would I like to import now? I click yes but this happens everytime I open iphoto. I have the directions to move the recovered photos file to the desktop. However, it still does it when I open iphoto and I have notice that each time I click yes it then creates 2 more recovered photos files.

Quit iPhoto and to to the iPhoto library (by default in your pictures folder) - right click (control click) on it and select show package contents - find the folder named import (or importing) and drag it to the desktop - DO NOT MAKE ANY OTHER CHANGES - launch iPhoto and you will be fine.
Open the import(ing) folder and if there is nothing in it that you need move it to the trash and empty the trash

What is the "recovered photos" file for?

I was just going through my "pictures" file, and came across a file called "recovered photo's" that's roughly 5GB in size.....spot checking it showed that identical photo's were in iphoto...but naturally i didn't check every one. Does anyone know what this folder is for?? Is it safe to delete?

By "pictures" file what do you mean? Are you referring to the Pictures folder or your iPhoto library? Same question for the "recovered photo's". Is that a folder you're referring to and where exactly is it located?
Often those are photos that were deleted or though to be delete and were placed in the recovered folder/roll in a rebuild or update because iPhoto had lost it's link to the roll it belonged in. You should not delete it from the Finder but you can from iPhoto. If they are in the library they will be in a roll titled the same as the folder in the iPhoto Library folder.

Recovering original photo files from Kodak

i know i should back up but i have lost many photo's on my machine. i know i have sent many of to kodak for printing over the last 2 years or so. Does anyone know if Kodak stores these and if i can pay to get the originals sent back to me ? thanks in advance.

I doubt very much that Kodak would store the digital files. That would take up too much space and organizational effort. If you only recently lost your files and haven't used, i.e. added, many new files since the loss, you can try using recovery software like SubrosaSoft FileSalvage to recover the files. It will let you run it in demo mode to see what can be recovered before you commit to purchasing it.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. I am trying to locate the original jpg or photo files that I uploaded from my camera. I know that the photos are there, because they show up in my iPhoto Library. Where can I go to find the original file ex: DSCN1242.jpg or OLM4564.jpg ?

Select the photo in iPhoto and use the command "File > Export" and set the "Kind" in the Export panel to "Original". That will write a copy of the original to a folder you can access in the Finder.
The command "File > Reveal in Finder" will show you the original inside the iPhoto Library, but you must not access the files this way. If you access them from other apps using the Finder, you will corrupt your library.

Open your iPhoto Library package with the Finder.

look for a folder titled Import or Importing and move it to the Desktop. Launch iPhoto to see if the message goes away. If there is no message check the contents of the Import folder to see if you want to keep any of those image files (usually they have not been imported into iPhoto). If you want to keep them then drag the folder into the open iPhoto window to import.

(They are backed up in Time Machine, but I like the immediacy of having them available.) So question 1 - is it possible to split the iphoto library so that the directory tree points to an external drive in some cases? And if that doesn't work--I am willing to export and delete some of these photos. However, an earlier delete left me with events that have a name in the event folder, but no photos. Question 2 -- How do I properly delete photos so that all references disappear?

Warning: Time Machine is not an Archiving application. It keeps rolling back ups. That means if you delete something from the source Mac it will eventually be also deleted from Time Machine. How long that takes depends on the amount of disk space TM has. So, remember, backing up in Time Machine is not the same as Archiving.
For the blank thumbnails: This can happen if you try delete too many photos at one go. Experienced users suggest you should delete in batches of 100 or so.
Yes you can split the Library, where some of the Masters are stored locally and some on an external disk, but really, you don't want to do that. iPhoto's file management tools are limited at best, and if the path to the files changes then you could find yourself repairing the links to the files - all of them, one by one.
Better: Have your entire Library on an External Drive.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you want to have a smaller library on your internal disk:
Here's one way to do what you want:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager
