Blank Photo Library

Something happened to my iphoto library today. I had about 281 total photos on it. Anyway it only loads the blank outlines of the all the photos. So I looked into the library folders, I believe there is three major folders, (i.e 2003,2004, etc) and it now says that the pics are corrupted and preview doesnt recognize format or something similar to that.
In Iphoto it just has all the blank photo outlines with no actual photo. Also my desktop, and screensaver which were pictures have all stopped working as well. When I look under Preferences it says none of the folders contain photos anymore.
If anyone has some ideas that would really be appreciated. Thank you.
IBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

First let's create a new library and see if any images will import. If there are any good images still left in the old library they will import into the new library.
Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and choose it.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
Good luck!
If the new library didn't import any images from the old library, then you can delete the old library. Import your images from backup now. Then backup the ENTIRE iPhoto Library.
Backing up your iPhoto Library
1. Burn the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder to a CD or DVD
This method will give you a burned iPhoto Library folder that can be copied back to your computer to replace a damaged library. You can also use this method to backup an old library when you want to create a new Library to use as your current library.
insert a blank CD into your internal or external CD-RW drive and copy the iPhoto library to the CD icon on your desktop. When you drag the CD icon to the Trash/Eject button in the Dock, you are given the option to burn the CD. Click Burn and the CD is created. To burn a DVD backup of your digital images, use iDVD and a SuperDrive-equipped Mac
2. Copy the ENTIRE iPhoto Library to an external drive formated for a Mac. Do not use this as your only back up as the external can also go bad.
3. Copy the ENTIRE iPhoto Library to your iPod in disk mode
4.Creating your own CDs and DVDs for viewing in iPhoto
This method is a great way to back up Albums of older photos or even your entire library if it is small enough to fit on a DVD. This method will give you a library that will mount within iPhoto in the source column to be viewed. To import any images from this library they need to be dragged into your library in the source column.

  • Photo Library - Blank White Squares

I got my new iPhone 4 today and when I sync my phone a lot of my photos in the Photo Library just show up as blank white squares in the thumbnails. If I click on the individual squares it pulls up the photos and I can view them. Anyone else experiencing this problem or know how to fix it?

If this was happing on your 3G and you upgraded your phone by restoring it from the backup of your 3G, it is also possible that your new phone may have inherited this problem from your old one (i.e., the problem may have been contained in the backup you restored from).  I'm not sure what else to suggest you try on your computer and I'm not sure that's the problem.  It may very well be something corrupt on your phone.  The basic troubleshooting steps (in escalating order) are Reset, Restore, Restore as New.  To reset your phone hold the on/off and home buttons until you see the Apple logo (ignoring the off slider that appears first), and release.  To restore your phone follow this guide: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414, backing up your phone at step 6, and restoring from that backup at the end of the process, followed by syncing with iTunes.  If that fails you will have to save as much of your data as possible, and restore it as new by following this process again but at the end choosing to set it up as a new iPhone.  If the problem persists after restoring as new you probably have a hardware problem and will have to have Apple take a look at it.

  • HT204570 Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable. I the error message from iPhotos after the so called upgrade to Photos which left me with a blank screen

Photos upgrade a disaster. No images appear in Photos. Able to re-establish all images in iPhoto only to have the app crash after uploading new photos from iPhone. Impossible to reload photo library as it needs 161 GB of space. The non functioning Photos library is 107 GB and the original iPhotos library from which it was created is 118 GB. I only have 146 GB available on this 1 TB drive but I am reluctant to trash Photos library in case iPhotos is truly damaged.

    And your question is?

  • Photo library blank!

When I opened my iPhoto 2 today, the photo libraries were black. I tried opening it holding down Option + Shift, and it went through and recovered about 8 of 78 photos. I then went looking for photos from where I had exported or discarded copies (desk top, trash, etc) and brought them into a new Library folder. The iPhoto screen is still showing "no photos." How do I configure the photos in my new Library so that iPhoto can find them?
    Thanks!!

Check the iPhoto Help topic, "adding photos to the photo library" (under "iPhoto Basics"). Your description of how you brought old photos into a new Library folder isn't very clear. The photos have to imported into iPhoto. In other words, the user doesn't put photos into the Library folder, iPhoto takes care of placing the photos there. Any user intervention in the iPhoto Library folder will only corrupt the iPhoto database.

  • Is there any way to copy content from my iPhone to a brand new Mac with a blank iTunes library?

    Bit of background:
This time last week, I had a MacBook Air and a 6 year old desktop PC. Everything I had was on both of them, so they acted as each other's back up. This Sunday evening just gone, my PC finally died a traumatic death, and I can't even get it to boot from Safe Mode. Then on Monday while I was at work, my house was burgled, and my MacBook Air was stolen, amongst many other things. All I have now is my iPhone 4S which was with me at the time. All my music, photos, videos etc are on my iPhone, but I'm very aware that when I eventually get my replacement MacBook from our insurance company (I'm being realistic and accepting that I'll never see my stuff again), as soon as I plug my phone into a blank iTunes library, I'll lose everything that's on there. Obviously I can re-download everything I've purchased from iTunes, though it will take a VERY long time and I still won't have playlists etc, and I can probably either Dropbox or email what photos I have on there, but I have a lot of video clips from over the last few years that aren't on my camera roll - they're in the phone as proper videos, in the video player app, and I can't get Dropbox to view that location, or figure out how to email them. The videos are very important to me and I really don't want to lose them; so much so that I'm thinking of never syncing my iPhone ever again!
Basically, what I'm asking is, how can I copy everything from my iPhone into a blank iTunes library? Is it even possible?
ANY input whatsoever would be greatly appreciated - I really don't want to lose all my content over this, so please please please help if you can!
    Thanks in advance

wjosten - thanks very much for the detailed instructions. I'll try this as soon as I get my replacement and it looks like you'll probably end up getting the green tick

  • Photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable..." Clear and concise support needed.

    Running iPhoto '09 Version 8.1.2
    Running MBP Version 10.7.4
When attempting to open iPhoto, or when iPhone is connected, I received the following message:
"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable" Followed by advice to restart iPhoto while hold down option and command keys.
That didn't work although I tried it several times.
But I did find advice here that did work, so I restarted iPhoto while holding down the 'Option' key and followed the prompts to open a blank library. iPhoto opened up and I was able to import files from a memory card no problem.
Here's my question, is there a procedure to follow to import the photos that are currently on my Mac? I don't want to proceed any further without knowing what I'm doing. I know this is a common problem (according to the discussions I'm seeing) but I really don't want to mess around without sound advice.

    Try repair the damaged Library:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Sync problem with photo library

    Hello,
I am not sure to post this question here, but since it happens with my apple tv i hope to be in the good section.
Most of the time when i start iTunes fresh and i want to sync my apple tv, which start at starting up iTunes, i get a error that it could not find the photo library.
When i go to the photo library tab i indeed see no events, or pictures at all. When i start up iPhoto and i look again, the problem is solved, but the worst thing is at has to resync my comleet photo library. This also happens with my iPod.
First i thought it was a update wich i was waiting for, but now, since the last 08 and 10.5 update and still no progress i hope somebody could help me out.
    Thank you in advance
    Edgar

That really sounds like ownership and/or permissions.
While everything is working properly, can you do a "Get Info" on the iPhoto Library in the Finder and write down what it says about ownership and permissions?
Then when it misbehaves, look again and see if it has changed?
Unfortunately, my library lives on a networked drive, so the ownership may be different. But in case it's useful, here's what mine says about the iPhoto Library folder:
    Owner: system (read & write)
    Group: wheel (read & write)
    Others: (read & write)
Hmm, that got me thinking, so I purposely created a new library on my MacBook HD (note that I am running 10.4.11). Its permissions are:
    Owner: {my username} (read & write)
    Group: {my username} (no access)
    Others: {blank} (no access)

  • Photos from recent event not appearing in photo library

I have recently uploaded photos from a recent trip. I have named the event and it is listed and accessible through 'events'. The event is also listed under the 'recent' menu. However, the photos are not appearing in my 'photos' library!
I want to sort the photos into my own order manually, but when I access the photo through the events menu, the option to sort photos manually is blanked out.
Any help would be gratefully received! Many thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
However, the photos are not appearing in my 'photos' library!
Are you referring to the Photos mode in iPhoto? That mode cannot be sorted manually. Send a feature request to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.
A workaround is to create a regular album and add the entire library to it. Then you will be able to manually sort the photos. New photos added to the library and the album will initially be located at the bottom of the album's window.
Albums give you the most control over displaying of the photos.

  • Found someone else's photos in my iCloud Photo Library?

Hello.  I was just going though my photo library on iCloud.com and I noticed 4 random entries for "Yesterday," stuck in the middle of the Moments list.  Three of them were just blank black photos supposedly taken on a street nearby and another was taken on another nearby street but clearly depicts a pile of clothing and someone's leg I have never seen before.  Is someone else's photo library crossing with mine?  Are other people receiving my photos?  What can be done about this?  It is very, very bad news!

Change the password for your iCloud account. If you have not already done so, turn on two step authentication.

  • IPhoto '08 prints blank photos

Since updating to iPhoto '08 on a very new MacBook, when trying to print photos with a Canon Selphy DS810 it only prints blank white pages. In the print dialog it only shows blank photos:
    http://homepage.mac.com/dsemaya/.Pictures/iphoto.png
I can print from Preview but it is hard to get the picture to scale properly.
Anyone know what is causing this?

Daniel, I suspect that you have lost the connection between your thumbnails and the larger .jpg version that can be sent to the printer. try this: what happens when you double click on the thumbnail as if to edit te picture? If you have a blank square, this is your answer. You'll have to rebuild your iPhoto library. If there is a picture after double clicking, then you've got another issue.

  • Photo library shows multiple "Last Import" albums after upgrade

Following my upgrade to IOS6, the photo library now shows 3 blank Last Import albums, the ones created when you use the camera import connector. I tried to reset photo syncs to correct the problem, but they still remain.
Having imported an event, one of the 3 Last Import albums is now populated with pictures. The issue remains that there is the clutter of the two blank ones which seem to linger and probably will always be there unless there is some way to reset this.
So the question is, has anyone else seen this issue and how can it be corrected. I have not seen any other similar postings on this problem.

And then I finally located the answer and although a bit of a pain, this corrected the problem.
Solution:   (Only practical with a few empty folders)
Shoot some photos with a digital camera using a SD card.
Put the SD Card in the Camera Connection Kit and connect to the Ipad.  Import the images but keep them on the card.
Disconnect the CCK and hook up to your Mac with Iphoto running. Import the images and delete from the Ipad when asked.
    Delete photos from Iphoto.
Repeat several times and you should notice that each time one more Last Import album vanishes from the Ipad.

I successfully synched photos from my mac book iphoto to my new iphone 5 (icloud did not do the job).  Now these photos appear on my phone in three places--iphoto app, last import, and photo library.  Does that mean that they take up three times the memory?  Will that affect iCloud?  Sorry for the end-user questions!!

HHi, thank you for the reply. I have checked my iPad and iPhone and neither has iCloud Photo Library (Beta) enabled. Turned off in both. Photostream is turned on.
i tried to sort it out  by dragging all the photos to Events on the Mac and then deleting them from iCloud - (left hand side of iPhoto under the section 'Shared'). the photos now show up in Events. I did force quit but the issue remains. The message reads ' photos are bing imported to the library. Please wait for import to complete.'
i can't empty iPhoto trash either. The message read "Delete error. Please wait for import to complete.'
WHen I was moving the photos to the Events I always had a message about duplicates - to the effect that the photos already existed, did I want to import them? I clicked on Yes, import all duplicates. But when it showed the images - duplicates side by side - one showed the photo and the other was blank.
I really don't know what to do! And I don't know how to handle my iOS devices. Is it to do with the large number of photos? Any help, advice appreciated.

  • Photo Library has gone

When I clicked on iPhoto, a window said my Photo Library had gone and iPhoto couldn't open. It asked if I wanted to create a library and I said yes. So now there's a library, but it's blank. The library with all my work (digital images of my paintings) is still missing. How can I get it back?
    Joan

    Joan:
You should have two iPhoto Library folders in your Pictures folder, "iPhoto Library" and "iPhoto Library_1". The second one will be the new one that's empty. Move it to the desktop and then launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed. It will give you an opportunity to locate a library to open. Navigate to your Pictures folder and select the original iPhoto Library folder. If is is not damaged for some reason it will open and you'll be back in business.

  • Photos has many instances of displaying blank photos, thumbnails?

My recently setup photos library has a lot of blank images. They show a blank thumbnail and when I open it sometime a picture will load which is something I have already deleted. I am not under "show recently deleted" rather this is happening under the section "Photos" which should only be showing active items. This is a serious bug.

Thanks for this, I let it run to completion while my Mac was idle but the blank thumbnails are unchanged.
Oddly, if clicked the pic opens and if I close immediately it goes back to a blank thumbnail. However, if I open a pic and then move forward or back with either arrow keys or trackpad when minimised again the thumbnail is a pic i.e. not blank.

  • Duplicate or Blank Photos

    Hi,
I downloaded the new Photos app over the weekend and have had my first proper look at it today.  I did a full Time Machine backup and separate Documents backup with my pictures included in this second backup.
I appear to have a number of blank photos and duplicate photos in the latest year on the Years view of the Photos section of the app.  If I mine down into the pictures to the Moments level they are still there as blanks or duplicates.  Metadata looks the same as the photo next to them and if I double click on them the photo appears - when I do this the split view thumbnail is blank for a short while and then flicks up with the same duplicate photo.  This all seems very strange - and I do not want to delete the photos for fear of deleting something that I will later regret.
I have also tried to go into Aperture to see if the same problem appears there but none of my photos are visible at all.  The entire library is now empty.
Has anybody else had problems with these weird duplicates?  Any ideas??

Do you have a backup copy of your iPhoto Library made just prior to upgrading to 10.10.3 and Photos?  If so  do the following:
    1 - restore it
2 - launch iPhoto with the Option key held down
3 - select the library and close iPhoto
4 - relaunch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and apply the following two first aid processed to the library:
    Option #1, Repair Library Permissions
    Option #2, Rebuild Thumbnails
    Option #4, Rebuild Library Database
5 - launch Photos with the Option key held down , select, open and convert the rebuild iPhoto library
6 - check to see if the blank thumbnails issue is resolved
