Blank photos on iPhoto

when i click on the photo thumbnails some photos when enlarged don't show the photo and are instead appear black? how do i fix this? the problem seems to be getting worse?

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). (On iPhoto 11 this option is under the File -> Reveal in Finder.) Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
If none of these help:
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • How do I print a blank card on Iphoto all options seem to have text and photos inside

I have tried to find just a plain blank photo card 5x7.  There is one that has a blank cover but in the folded area there seems to be no blank option they all have photo inserts and text inserts????  It seems that you can delete the text boxes but I cant seem to delete the photo insert boxes

The question of making and having printed a photo book has been asked more than a few times now. It seems like a good idea. Perhaps you might provide that suggestion directly to Apple on their iPhoto for iOS Feedback page here

Yes - you need a min of 10 GB just to operate - with just 1 you certainly can lose photos and other critical things - you need to make space immediately - probably by moving your iPhoto library to a volume formatted Mac OS extended -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • All photos appear blank/corrupted in iPhoto 6

Suddenly all photos in iPhoto appear as gray squares with dotted-line borders, and their titles look like Chinese symbols. A partial screenshot is here:
    http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g80/melissa_sinclair2003/iPhotoscreenshot2.png
If I try to click on a thumbnail to edit a picture, again a gray square appears with an exclamation point in the middle.
All the photo files are in their places in the iPhoto Library folder and can be viewed. I have not moved the files in the Finder (I know not to do that). Also, I have tried to rebuild the library, but nothing changed. I have restarted the computer as well.
The problem exists in all albums as well as in the main library. The number of photos seems correct, they are just all blank and with garbled titles. Also, all the info (in Show Info), other than the title, is fine, including keywords.

    Hi Sven,
It sounds a lot like you have a corrupt iPhoto Data Base file. The only way to fix this is to create a new iPhoto Library unfortunately. You will lose any modified files, but retain all originals.. It simply means that you will have to re-create any modified photos or slide shows you previously had. (Unless you have a Back Up of your iPhoto Data Base file... "Library6.iPhoto") The good news is that all of your "Original" files can be re-imported into a new Library so not all is lost.
    1. If you are running iPhoto 6, you need to take your "iPhoto Library" folder inside your ~/Pictures folder ~denotes your home directory. Drag it to the desktop. Launch iPhoto and it will ask you if you want to create a New Library or open an existing one. Choose Create a New Library.
    2. Now go back to your iPhoto Library on the Desktop and take the "Originals" folder and drag it into the open iPhoto window. (You could probably use the Import option in the Menu Bar and then select your "Originals" folder if you like but dragging is fine too) This will put you right back to scratch, but at least your photos are intact. This is the best you can hope for.
    3. If you are using iPhoto 7 (iLife 08') then the process is slightly different in that your iPhoto Library is now a Unix file in your pictures folder and not a visible folder. Don't panic, its just Apple's way of preventing people from getting into trouble by changing the names of folders when they SHOULDN'T. You still need to drag the iPhoto file to the desktop the same way as you would in the first step. All your iPhoto data is within that file. Again, Launch iPhoto and you will be asked to Create a New Library or Open an existing one. Select Create a New Library. Now go back to your iPhoto Library file on the desktop and either right click on it or control click and you will see an option to "Show Package Contents". Select this and you will find your "Originals" folder. Once again, simply drag your Originals folder to your Open iPhoto library and allow them to import. Once you have your library up and running, you can delete that iPhoto Library on the desktop. You can keep your modified Photos if you like but don't import them into iPhoto as you will have numerous duplicate issues due to a new Data Base file that cannot recognize them.
I hope this gets you up and running again... Good luck.
    Regards,
    Ben.

  • IPhoto '08 prints blank photos

Since updating to iPhoto '08 on a very new MacBook, when trying to print photos with a Canon Selphy DS810 it only prints blank white pages. In the print dialog it only shows blank photos:
    http://homepage.mac.com/dsemaya/.Pictures/iphoto.png
I can print from Preview but it is hard to get the picture to scale properly.
Anyone know what is causing this?

Daniel, I suspect that you have lost the connection between your thumbnails and the larger .jpg version that can be sent to the printer. try this: what happens when you double click on the thumbnail as if to edit te picture? If you have a blank square, this is your answer. You'll have to rebuild your iPhoto library. If there is a picture after double clicking, then you've got another issue.

  • Many events and photos are missing from my iphoto.  I have time machine and would like to restore without creating duplicates. The issue is although my photos are presently blank time machine/iphoto does see the file so importing them will create duplicat

For some unknown reason, events and photos in my Iphoto are appearing blank. The photos have a title / placeholder but no picture. I use time machine and have back ups, my goal is to restore the photos without creating duplicates. Unfortunately iphoto sees the blank photos as if the picture exists?  Help

If you want to use your back up you need to restore then entire Library from Time Machine, and then replace the damaged Library with it.
    Regards
    TD

  • IPhoto 9.5.1 has suddenly got all blank photos.  If I scroll through the photos they appear briefly.  I have not updated to Yosemite.  I have been through the database rebuild and repair routines.

iPhoto 9.5.1 has suddenly got all blank photos.  If I scroll through the photos they appear briefly and disappear.  I have not updated to Yosemite - I am still running Mavericks on an iMac.  I have been through the database rebuild and repair routines.  I uploaded photos and movies three days ago and all was well.  Then I used the migration assistant to copy from Time Machine to a new Macbook Air and noticed blank photos.  I thought it was a problem with the Macbook Air, but then I went back to the iMac to check and they were all blank as well.

what does appear after the photo "flashes"?
Have you repaired permissions? If not backup your iPhoto library and option-command launch and repair permissions - then repair the database and if needed rebuild the database
If that does not do it down iPhoto Library Manager on the iMac and use the free trial's rebuild command to create a totally new library leaving the existing one alone
Once you have the iMac working correctly then connect the two systems together (or use an external drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) ) and drag the iPhoto library form the iMac to the pictures folder of the MBA (rather than migration assistant)

  • Some photos in iphoto are missing and there are blank thumbnails which when i try to open them show an exclamation sign

some photos in iphoto are missing and there are blank thumbnails which when i try to open them show an exclamation sign

The exclamation make is an indication that iPhoto has broken the file path to the original photo.
Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Accidentally delete iPhoto and now left with blank photos and blank events

    Hi,
I have accidentally deleted iPhoto app and now i am left with blank photos and blank events in my iphoto.
I tried eveything. Ranging from removing the pplist, installing, Iphoto Library manager but it seems to get worse.
i have the original package content
and this is how my iphoto library icon looks like.
And when i try to drop my original content package into the new iphoto, it will show an error message.
Kindly tell me what else can i do?
    im using iphoto'09

Outside chance: try recover the deleted files with an (expensive) app like File Salvage
    Other than that, no hope.

  • New iPad 2 (gen 3) blank thumbnails in iPhoto and Photos

    I have a new iPad 2 (2012 / generation 3) and it is very nice :-)
It also displays photos very well. However, I find that I have a problem with some of the photos that I have imported via iTunes ( Sync Photos from myfolder ). Although all of the photos display correctly (full size) in both the iPhoto and in Photos apps, some of the thumbnails are blank in both apps.
The same folder of photos synced to my iPhone 4 does not exhibit the same problems.
Some of the photos were taken by a Canon EOS 1000D, but others were taken by an iPhone 3S and an iPhone 4.
My iTunes (10.6.0.40 ) runs on Windows
Anyone have any ideas about what is happening here?
    Thanks

There is an iPhoto for iOS section on these forums. Your question has been asked there as well. I'm also experiencing one of my photos showing the correct thumbnail in Photos but a blank thumbnail in iPhoto for iOS. So far I haven't read about any fix yet.

  • Email photos from iPhoto creates blank attachments

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I cannot find a thread on it. How come whenever I email photos from iPhoto it sends along a blank attachment to go along with every photo I send? I have my mail options set to "always send windows friendly attachments".
    Thanks for the help.

    Hi Joe,
That's the resource fork. Don't know why it does that, but you can strip the resource fork before you send the images. You would have to share/export the image, then strip the fork (using something like GrimRipperCM), then attach to mail.
Or just tell the recipients to disregard the blank attachment.

  • Can't view photos in iphoto but I still can in Preview

Recently I changed some of the folder names of my photos in the iphoto library, but now when I want to view them in iphoto they are blank. I can still view them through Preview mode if I go through Finder, but that's a hassle. Also, the photos that I didn't change the folder name I can still view in iPhoto. I use iPhoto 5.
What should I do in order to get things back to normal and be able to view my photos in iphoto??

    i Brian
Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums
1 - this is the iPhoto '08 forum - your question would be better placed in the iPhoto 5 forum - http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=850 - some things work differently and here people will assume that you have iPhoto '08 and the answers may not work on iPhoto 5
What should I do in order to get things back to normal and be able to view my photos in iphoto??
2 - You should NEVER modify the iPhoto library (or any other database structure for that matter) - you should ONLY use iPhoto to change things. At this time your two choices are to put things back exactly like they were or recreate your library which will lose your edits, albums, etc

  • Unable to open and view photos in iphoto

I am unable to view my photos in iphoto, or from anywhere else on my computer.  iphoto looks normal but is running very slow.  My thumbnails are all there.  I will click on a thumbnail, but the border turns from yellow to light blue, but the photo does not open for viewing, editing, or slideshow.  I have a MacBookPro, MAC OS X 10.6.8. iphoto version 8.1.2
I have tried to open photos from my external hard drive without success.  Also, I can't attach a photo to an email.  When I attempt any of these things, this type of error message pops up:

  • I have applied a description to photos in iPhoto.  When I burn the CD, the description is not included.  I used to do this with an older version of iPhoto.  Am I doing something wrong?

I have been organizing my photos in iPhoto and have written descriptions for them.  In the past, with an older version of iPhoto, I would burn a CD.  When I would put the CD back in my computer, the description would also be on the CD.  Now, I am burning the CD's and there is no record of the description.  This is very important as I want the information stored with the photos, both for my own reference, but also if something would happen to me my family would know who are in the photos and what the occasions were.  Is there some way I can do this?  Any help would be much appreciated.  Thanks!

Ok, sorry!  I created an album with the photos I wanted to burn.  I gave them new titles, sometimes using batch change when appropriate, otherwise individually.  I then clicked on info and in the area labeled description I gave each photo a brief description.  When I was done, I went to Share and clicked on burn.  When prompted I inserted a blank CD-R in my external CD/DVD burner (which I need to use as my internal one has been replaced twice in less than a year and I was sick of spending $150.00 each time).  When it was loaded I clicked the burn button at the bottom of iPhoto.  When it was completed I reinserted it into the external CD/DVD burner/reader to see if it was successful.  The photos all came up with the new title in my iPhoto library.  When I click on info button, there is no description.  The information about the date and place where the photo was taken is there, just not the description that I personally included.
I have not tried exporting the photos to finder and then burning as they suggest doing if you want the CD to be readable on Windows program, but I never had to do that with my old iPhoto program, so did not know if that would make a difference.
I can't think of any other information you might need, but if I missed something let me know and I will try to include it.  Thanks for your interest in helping!
