Blank PowerBook Screen

The display on my Titanium G4 PowerBook (Mercury) 500 MHz has gone blank. Two days ago I opened it with the display facing brilliant sunlight. I turned it off after a few minutes since I couldn't see anything on the display. I assumed at the time that the display was washed out by the bright light. When I next turned the PowerBook on (and continuously since then), I got only a black screen, except that I can barely barely make out the outlines of the log in dialogue box. I assume the PowerBook itself is working fine; I can connect to and control it from my desktop Mac with Timbuktu, and all the details of the PowerBook's display are fully visible in a window on my desktop via Timbuktu, even though the PowerBook's display itself remains black. In fact, as I'm typing, I can read the New York Times with Safari in the PowerBook's Timbuktu window on my desktop computer. But when I look over my shoulder at the PowerBook, all I see is a black display. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Stan. The usual cause of a problem like yours is a failed inverter, which controls the backlight tube.
If you are a highly competent general do-it-yourselfer, you can probably replace the inverter yourself:
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G4-Ti-Mercury/Inverter-Board
Because the procedure is long and involved, having a technician do it for you would probably cost more than I'd be glad to invest in such an old Powerbook. Therefore, weigh carefully whether you'd rather pay only for the part and invest your own labor, or whether the job is too complex for you and not worth paying a technician to do. In the latter case, it might be wiser to replace the Powerbook.

  • Powerbook blank white screen

Hi, I tried to shut my powerbook down 2 days ago, and it was very slow and eventually when i 'forced quit' about 20 'finder's in red came up. So i just switched it off and let it rest. Now when i try to turn it on, it makes sound (that switching on sound) but goes straight to a blank white screen. My external mouse highlights, and I can hear a CD stuck in the drive whirring on, but can't eject it. Also the light behind the keyboard doesn't come on, or at the place where you open the book (which normally glows when it's on).
I have my entire life's photographic record (i'm a photographer) on it. Will i be able to get these and all other data back? What process do I go through in order to 'fix' it?
    What's the problem?
    thanks

could be failing hard drive or other components like logic board etc.
better leave it off in order not to cause more damage.
you could try service provider search for your location:
    http://www.apple.com/za/buy/locator/index.html
in case of the hard drive failure, file recovery could be very expensive.

  • Blank grey screen on startup issue

I have started up my G4 powerbook and am met with a blank grey screen.
I had previously been using the laptop for connecting to a projector for a presentation and having been met with this problem I reconnected the laptop to a projector and the image of the desktop was viewable on the projector screen and thus I could manage the laptop via this. How can I get the screen on the laptop back to where it should be that I can see the what I am doing?
I am sure its something obvious and possibly relating to screen sharing or such like but I cannot think of the solution just now. Any thoughts?
    Many thanks for you time.

    Hello again,
In order to try to resolve this I need to connect the laptop to a projector to be able to see the desktop image and open such things as System preferences. This takes me bait longer than it should thus the delay in adding to this discussion.
I did connect it up to the projector. Switched off the mirroring and tried a few switching off and on's etc. I have also tried resting the PRAM and the PMU but to now avail. There appears to be a disconnect between the screen and the system. I reckon it is maybe to do with the fact that the last time is was used and functioned as usual was when I was using the laptop with the projector.
It is of course frustrating as the laptop in question though of a certain vintage is in very good condition and operates very well other than this issue.

  • Boots to a blank blue screen unless from DVD

My powerbook got the "Hold down the power button..." screen and then when i restarted, it would only boot to that message. I reinstalled from my dvd, and that seemed to go fine. when i boot it up i gets past the grey screen with the logo, but gets hung on a blank blue screen. I have tried 2 different dvds. both booted fine and allowed me to install the os onto the hd, but once i tried to boot from the HD i would only get a blank blue screen, the same color as the install background.

    Have you tried:
    Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
Please post back with update or further questions/comments.
    Good luck.

  • Blank blue screen on boot unless safe mode

My 12" powerbook will not boot up. After the grey screen with the logo, it goes to a blank blue screen and stops there. The disk is fine, i can start the powerbook in target mode and boot other computers off it. It also has a fresh install on in so i know it's not any 3rd party stuff. I have tried all the standard troubleshooting stuff (reset NVRAM & PMU, ran disk utility and disk warrior). Does anyone know exactly what is turned off in safe mode? It is something that is with the standard os install that doesn't get loaded in safe mode that is causing the crashes.

    Hi slee,
In addition to cornelius's questions, please also respond to these.
What version of OS X did you reinstall?
In your computer specs, you only list Mac OS X (10.4.10). Is that what you installed? If so, did you happen to use the system discs that shipped with your MBP? That might explain the source of the problem.
In your Other Topic, you wrote
"I have tried 2 different dvds. both booted fine and allowed me to install the os onto the hd,..."
What type of install DVDs were each of those?
Did you do an Erase & Install each time?
Do you have any Previous Systems, still present?
After the Kernel Panic, when you reinstalled, did you first disconnect all peripherals?
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is available?
How much RAM is installed, and is it original or added?

  • Issue when signing into adobe I get a blank white screen

what seems happening is when they log into their adobe account, it will go to a blank white screen and seem to cycle till it eventually times out and gets a connection error.  However, if they type in "adobe.com"  it will show them as having logged in.
This is happening on ie, and firefox and is not profile specific meaning I can log into the computer under my credentials and experience the same thing.
I've tried the usual suggestions such as renaming the OOBE folder, deleting temp files, etc.
I'm thinking it's some kind of issue with adobe flash player.  Any guidance with this would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Creative Cloud is a blank white screen, can't download any apps, how do I fix?

    Hello all,
    PLEASE HELP!!
I downloaded Ai as a trial version, then purchased CS6 on a 12 month.
Now I'm trying to download other apps (tried Photoshop, Flash and Premiere Pro), however when I click 'download' to try and get the other apps Creative Cloud pops up and it's a blank white screen.
Nothing happens, anthing to click NOTHING.
I've tried shutting the computer down, reinstalling Creative Cloud. Even tried downloading the above programs as trial versions (to start with) but CC just keeps popping up with a blank white screen.
How do I fix, or better still just get the apps I'm after?

    Hi,
    Welcome to the Community!
    Rename the opm.db file.
Close the Creative Cloud application if it's running.
    Navigate to the OOBE folder.
    Windows: [System drive]:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Adobe\OOBE
    Mac OS: /User/<username>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/OOBE folder
Rename the opm.db file to opm_old.db
    Launch Creative Cloud
    Thanks!

  • Safari launches to blank white screen them locks

When I launch Safari, it opens up to a blank white screen. No matter what URL I input, The page doesn't load and the viewer window stays blank and white. No error messages or anything! Any ideas?

    Hi Glenn,
Check to see if you have a recent crash report logged to this file:
    Hard drive > Users > Your Username > Library > Logs > CrashReporter > Safari.crash.log
Each report in there will start with a timestamp so find the most recent one and post it here please. The most recent one should be at the end of that file.

  • Blank white screen when minimized or closed

Lately, whenever I have iTunes minimized or closed, I now have a blank white screen the same size as the iTunes window. I can move this "window" but it covers other items. When I show the iTunes window again, it appears exactly where this white window is located.
Is there a way to fix this problem?

Here's a "me too" post. I'd love to hear if anyone makes headway with this. I am the outside Mac geek for a company that has an exchange server, mostly PCs and a handful of Macs and iPhones. All the iPhones are working like a champ save one on which the Mail application periodically stops working with the Exchange account. The calendar and contacts from the exchange account continue to sync just fine, but mail app will simply remain blank when the user clicks on the inbox.
I've been able to kill the account (on the phone) and re-setup and it'll work for 2-3 weeks and then one day simply stop. I've restored the iPhone to factory defaults twice now. This past time I've not restored the contents of the phone from a backup, but rather set it up as a new phone. We'll see if that makes a difference. I've also setup the Exchange mail account as an IMAP account as a backup. Other accounts continue to work just fine when this happens--it's just the Exchange mail account that flips out.
At any rate, if anyone has any additional info/experiences, please post as I'd be curious. I'm hoping this most recent reset will do the trick, but I'm not confident it will.
    Cheers,
    Stephen

  • Blank White Screens After Installing Lion in Software

    Before I start, I have a Macbook Pro 5,1 -- 2.66Ghz Core2Duo with 8GB of RAM, 500GB 7200rpm HDD, and an nVidia 9600GT M Graphics card
I installed Lion. This install was an UPGRADE from 10.6.8. Most of my apps arent working at all. Adobe CS 5.5 Master Collection, Final Cut Pro, Ableton Live, and even Time Machine.
They all just open up and give me a blank white screen (literally, a window, and instead of there being stuff inside the window its just a big giant WHITE BOX OF NOTHING). Time machine actually shows me the selected finder window but i couldnt select any older time machine dates.
Additionally I tried dragging icons off the dock, and it froze up my entire machine just by dragging them off the dock. I had to right click on icons to remove them.
I finally booted up into the "Recovery HD" and recovered my Time Machine backup to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 that I was using before.
I would very much like to use Lion, but it seems to have alot of problems with my machine. Should I do a completely fresh install maybe?
    Any other solutions?

I have reverted to a backup from yesterday in which Lion was first installed and ran without problems. But this time, the windows of my apps were still white.
I also tried creating a new user account, thinking that there was a chance that it was a conflict with a piece of 3rd party software. Not that I can rule out software conflicts, but I still had the same problems.
So I'm now reverting to Snow Leopard.  Ugh…
At least the "Recovery Partition" is pretty cool ;)

  • Blank White Screen Appears after deploying the form on server

    Hi Experts,
We have one strange issue with the interactive form developed.
One of our end user is seeing a Blank White Screen with Red cross at corner when he opens the form in portal.
The form Layout type is ZCI and Display type in Web Dynpro is Native. THe user has Adobe 9 version and working on Internet explorer 6.0.
Kindly let me know how to solve this problem.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Phani.

    Hello,
this happens when the activeX component is not installed for ACF forms. You say you have ZCI so that should not be the issue. I would recommend to try to open other PDF forms on the internet or offline using this users browser. I would re-install the Reader (well, I would use 8.1, because I´ve heard 9 has problems sometimes). And maybe try to install that activeX component. And... now it reminds me of... check his browser security properties, maybe he is so "secure" that he cannot see the form.

  • Blank White screen appears while returning from server page to website page.

I am trying to run my website as hosted webapp on Intext Cloud FX. The scenario I am facing is this
    1. I submit to payment page calling server servlet https://abc.com/payment.
    2. Server responds with an intermediate page (form with hidden fields), with a form in it submitting parameters to my website url
    (http://a.com/checkout/paySuccess.mobile).
My app is struck in second step when server responds with intermediate page and it shows blank white screen.
Any help in this regard will be helpful.
    Regards

Got the solution. Problem was that I was trying to submit form from encrypted (https) page to unencrypted page(http). On firefox browser we get an alert message regarding this but on hosted app, no such message is appearing and only white screen is coming. When sumbitted to encrypted (https) page all worked fine.

After reading and resetting everything with Keyboard I still get blank white screen on 2nd? page of boot. The only way I can boot to Mavericks is unplug power cord, push and hold power button while plugging power cord in. Fans run at full speed, machine boots then runs normal except the dvdrw will not . The mid 2011 IMAC had the same problem with LION. I changed hard drives, formatted, and installed a clean install of latest os x mavericks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Use the uninstaller provided with the Sophos software. You can uninstall CUDA via the preference pane. Be sure you remove the com.nvidia.CUDA extension which is located in the /System/Library/Extensions/ folder. Not sure if Fan Control has an uninstaller so you will have to do it manually:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller
      10. Spring Cleaning
For more information visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on removing software.
Be sure to remove your two Login Items. Finally do this:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
