Blank screen at boot. Happened after removing rEFIt. Seems responsive to keyboard input but nothing but black screen.

Hi, I removed rEFIt and since then I cannot boot. The only thing I get is the startup sound, and after that it is blank/black. I had one random successful boot and I have no idea how that happened. I tried all those hotkey combinations, just to try everything. Like, command+option+p+r and command + r etc.
It's a 2011 iMac. Hope someone knows what can be done.

It used to react to the command+option+R+P and reboot, but not any more. Well actually it seems random, some times it works. I would also get some "bleep" sound if I kept spamming keys, but not when it is "not working".
It shipped with Lion, yes.
I tried cmd+opt+R now, and I can hear the HD working on something, but since the screen remains black I don't know what is happening. This has also been the case when I pressed and held shift, cmd+R, and various others.
It really bugs me how random this seems to be.
I tried to hold options-key to get the startup-menu, no luck. It is as if the display is not activated at all.

    Hi Mofimac,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your Mac is only starting up to a blank gray or white screen after updating OS X, you can find some useful troubleshooting steps in this article:
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
I recommend going through these first three sections first:
Disconnect, test peripheral devices and network cables
    Perform a Safe Boot
    Reset the NVRAM / PRAM

  • I was logged in with a temporary profile on my pc, after restarting everything seemed to be fine. But my iTunes music is all in the cloud now, and my playlists are gone. What do I do?

I was logged in with a temporary profile on my pc, after restarting everything seemed to be fine. But my iTunes music is all in the cloud now, and my playlists are gone. What do I do?
My iTunes media folder shows ALL of my music still there (including all from imported CD's), but on my iTunes, it says most of it is in the cloud? As well as my playlists that I have had for YEARS, are all gone. I just recently got a new laptop and had my iTunes transferred over, when I re-downloaded iTunes onto it, everything popped up perfectly from this same file. Now after this "Temporary Profile" mishap, nothing is working properly with iTunes.
    Help! Please.

Do this. If all the synced media like apps and music are alread in the the iTnunes library just backup the iPod and restore from that backup

  • Slow boot up after removing boot camp

I removed boot camp aftering realizing that I barely use it and hoping that the boot up time would be as quick as when I bought my mac a year ago. However, the boot up time is just as slow even after removing boot camp. I have gone into system preferences and chosen mac ox as the primary disk but nothing happens. Please help!

Check the setting in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.

  • Slow boot time after removing bootcamp

I am a noob when it comes to a mac...I recently bought a Macbook Pro and installed windows using boot camp. The MBP always booted very fast. I realized I dont need Windows anymore so I removed it using bootcamp assistant. The problem is that now the boot time is very slow. Even before the white screen with the gray Apple logo. It takes at least 30 sec. any ideas?
    Thanks

    HI,
Check to see how much available space there is on the startup disk.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.
Insufficient disk space can cause the problems you are experiencing.

  • What should happen after removing restricted group GPO settings

I created and applied restricted group settings in GPO
Computer Configuration -> Policies -> Windows Settgins -> Secuirty settings -> Restricted Groups
which is linked to all production servers OU. I set up members of local administrators group to include only domain admins. This lead to removing all another accounts from local administrators group on all server. I was quite scared about this, I realize my
mistake. So I remove this restricted groups settings from this GPO. Then on all servers previous configuration came back, all previously configured accounts are back in local administrator group. Is it normal behavior? I thought that these previously configured
    accounts will not back automatically

This is the expected behavior since Windows XP/Windows Server 2003.

  • Installing AcrobatPro after removing Adobe Reader Safari displayed pdf urls only as a black page anymore

After installing Acrobat Pro it installs in Library/Internet Plugin-ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin version 11.0.03. Allthough after selecting a PDF-link it leads to a displays it not in Acrobat Pro, it diplays it as a black page in Safari. When I have a look in Acrobat Pro into the preferences/internet/webbrowser-option/PDF to show inBrowser with: isnt checked! And there is still listed/Application/Adobe Reader.app instead of /Applikation/Adobe Acrobat Pro!!
There is no way to select this Applikation. Having a look at Lbrary/Preferences/com.adobe.acrobat.pdfviewer.plist listed:
    AdobePDFDriver file://localhost/Volumes/Sicherung%20laptop/Applications/Adobe/Adobe%20Acrobat% 209%20Pro/Adobe%20Acrobat%20Pro.app/
    ReaderInstallPath file://localhost/Applications/Adobe%20Reader.app/
    WebBrowserUsePath file://localhost/Applications/Adobe%20Reader.app/
Has anyone changed the ReaderInstallPath file or WebBrowserUsePath file to the path of Acrobat Pro  and as a result a good diplay of PDF-urls in Arcobat Pro or Safari??
Thankx, I hope my english isn´t to bad for a german apple-user!

Thanks for the screenshot, Pat. I think the light bulb went off for me. I was looking over the tips for configuring Firefox at the link:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/display-pdf-browser-acrobat-xi.html
And I think what confused me the most was this screen shot for plug-ins for Firefox mentioned Acrobat.
I had Acrobat installed myself, but most of our users do not use Acrobat, since it's not a free product. I uninstalled Adobe Acrobat, and the Adobe Acrobat plug-in was still there, so that forced me to realize that the plug-in that comes with Adobe Reader 11.0.3 is called "Adobe Acrobat".
I went into Tools->Options->Applications and selected "Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)", rather than "Use Adobe Reader (default)".
This now allows me to not only view PDFs within a browser window in Firefox, but it also enables the save icon (which "Use Adobe Reader (default)" was not allowing me to do:
It's a shame that the default setting is not for "in browser", because our customers may have to make a configuration change.
There is no way to programmatically force a configuration change on a user's browser, is there?

  • I tried to download latest iTunes.  When I click download, my Firefox pops-up a windows asking me save the "iTunes64Setup.exe" file on my compuer in a local drive. However, nothing happens after that. I tried with different browsers, but no luck.

It's really funnt...but I see that it is really happening to many. Has anyone found a solution for this?

Finally, I did wget <url> from my bash shell (on my linux machine)  and could download iTunes 11 64-bit for windows 7. Here is the exact command (should be useful as getting the URL is sometimes tricky)
    wget http://secure-appldnld.apple.com/iTunes11/031-1547.20131105.FFjvT/iTunes64Setup.exe
I would expect this to work as is even from windows/MAC provided you have 'wget' command on it.
    Cheers !

  • [Dell E5510] Blank screen during and after boot

    Hello,
I performed system update some time ago (2 or 3 weeks) and left my computer unused. Today I tried to power on it and I was very surprised, because I didn't see anything on screen during boot and after it. I rebooted computer in fallback mode (I also added "i915.modeset=0" to kernel init args), and I saw command line. Then I updated whole system and rebooted it again - no luck again blank screen during boot and after.
I rebooted it one more time, but with default kernel (I disabled KMS again via GRUB command line) and I saw systemd output during boot. I teems, that all services were started successfully, because all messages were prefixed with "OK". Then I cloud only use command line, because Gnome 3 was not running under seventh console.
Any idea what is going one here?

    Hi there Sudarshan21,
I would recommend taking a look at the troubleshooting steps found in the article below.

  • Boot With V-COM System Commander & Blank Screen

I have V-Com System Commander  ver 7 installed on my computer for multi boot start ups.  With my previous Nvidia video card I had an active visual System Commander screen at boot up where I made my choice of OS’s for the boot.  After installing the MSI G4 Ti4200-TD-8X64 I get a black/blank screen with a “out of range” message.  The System Commander has loaded (but screen is black) and I have to guess as to where to place the mouse to get the OS to continue to boot.
Can you help me with this problem.
If I reinstall the previous Nvidia video card I get the visual screen back.  So I feel that the  MSI G4 Ti4200-TD-8X64 is not setup correctly for my computer.
    Thanks, [email protected]

    Deathstalker,
System Commander is a OS dual/multi boot software app.  I currently boot to either WIN93SE or XP.  The screen is only black/blank during the boot sequence, but that is when System Commander gives you the option of OS's to boot with.  If I am lucky enuf to guess and 'click' on where the radio button is for either WIN95 or XP, the appropriate OS boots and all is well.  As stated B/4 I only get the "out of range" statement at this time.  I have tried refresh rates from 60 to 85 with no luck.
    Thanks for the interest.

  • After reading and resetting everything with Keyboard I still get blank white screen. The only way I can boot to Mavericks is unplug power cord, push and hold power button while plugging power cord in. Fans at full speed.

After reading and resetting everything with Keyboard I still get blank white screen on 2nd? page of boot. The only way I can boot to Mavericks is unplug power cord, push and hold power button while plugging power cord in. Fans run at full speed, machine boots then runs normal except the dvdrw will not . The mid 2011 IMAC had the same problem with LION. I changed hard drives, formatted, and installed a clean install of latest os x mavericks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Use the uninstaller provided with the Sophos software. You can uninstall CUDA via the preference pane. Be sure you remove the com.nvidia.CUDA extension which is located in the /System/Library/Extensions/ folder. Not sure if Fan Control has an uninstaller so you will have to do it manually:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller
      10. Spring Cleaning

Be sure to remove your two Login Items. Finally do this:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Blank screen & no booting after running BIOS update on Satellite A200-1AE

Here is my problem with my A200-1AE (PSAECE) Notebook:
I downloaded the latest BIOS update from the Toshiba download drivers library to install Win XP since finally the drivers are realized. (Note the update clearly stated to run ONLY if you want to install XP on you NB).
So I unzipped the file and after hitting the .exe file it started updating the BIOS on its own without me giving the liberty to do so. Half way the N/B froze for about 20 minutes and as I didnt know what else to do so I reset it.
Result? The NB does NOT boot. I press the power button, the Hard Drive icon flashes 2-3 times as well as the DVD drive, I get a blank screen and the power cord & power button icons constantly on. I removed the battery and the power cord for 48 hours hoping it will reset the BIOS on its own to no avail.
The BIOS battery is under the touchpad which means I have to disassemble the whole laptop and I am not ready to do so. I dont know if on the motherboard there are BIOS reset jumpers and I need someones help as to what I should do. I am starting to think that things where MUCH easier back to when I just had a desktop PC.
THERE must be something I can do other that taking it to the service center and pay half the value of the laptop in repairs.... PLS HELP Im desperate....

    Hi there,
first of all: a notebook is not a desktop and such mobile computer does not have jumpers like a deskop computer. They surely have something to delete the BIOS but I am not so sure IF resetting the BIOS could help you.
I guess you will have to send your machine to a service center for repair because in such cases you will have no other option. Do you have still warranty on this machine?

  • HT4840 Boot camp does not boot to Windows 7 disk after completing disk partition - white blank screen

After completing the partitionning of the hard disk, the iMac reboots but nothing happens. The system does not boot from the Windows 7 disk.
A blank screen appears and that's all.
I have tried to manually boot from the disk by pressing the <Alt> kei will restarting the iMac. The system display the option of booting from the iMac hard disk or the Windows 7 disk. Seelcting the Windows 7 option does noting.
Thanks in helping me find a solution to my boot problem.

Are using a 64 bit version or a 32 bit version of Windows?
I'm not up on the iMacs but according to this article you may not be able to use 64bit Windows.

  • Blank screen after boot

I was running a fairly resource intensive program and went off to do something else. Upon return, the restart windows prompt had appeared (for updating to build 9926) but was unresponsive and stopped me from interacting with the screen with my mouse. After
managing to close the program, nothing was responding so I restarted. This was where the problems developed.
After it had rebooted (passed the windows logo) nothing happened. The same happened after another reboot. On alternate boots it displays "preparing recovery options", but still does nothing. After 10 minutes it shuts down the hard drive (which
    isn't corrupt).
I attempted to recover it using a win 8 pro disk (all I had at the time), but it didn't work. I am also downloading the w10 iso. Quick help will be appreciated, as I need to use my computer for school.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Joesmiled,
You can use the Windows 10 installation media to refresh your current installation:
You can refresh, reset, or restore your PC from the Windows Recovery Environment.
