Blank Screen (Dark)

Hi,
I have a Satellite M35X-S329. Somebody gave me this computer. When I turned the power on, I could hear
a spiining sound briefly about 5 seconds, no beep and then it stops. Nothing shows on the screen.
Does anybody know what's the problem? Or what I should do to fix this problem? Someone told me that the
problem lies in the motherboard.
I appreciate your suggestion and help.

  • Ipad 2 screen randomly gone blank shows dark blue light up but no apple logo upon restart and remains the same.

    Hey
So I left my Ipad 2 on charge and it was working absolutely fine. Later on when I came in the room to check up on it, it had a blank screen and the Ipad was lit in the background as it was giving off the dark blue light but nothing on the screen would come up. I tried shutting it down using the power button and the home button yet nothing. Even the Apple logo would not appear. I just recently upgraded to IOS 6. I'm not sure what exactly caused this as it was working fine just a few hours ago. I've tried connecting to itunes held down the power and home button nothing seems to be working. Also I no longer have the warrenty.
Not sure what to do now

    Perform a Reset... Try again...
Reset  ( No Data will be Lost )
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.

If no joy... Try a Restore...
1: Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
2: If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane.
3: If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try using the steps in this article to force the device into recovery mode.

  • I lost the camera function. I get a dark blank screen.

I suddenly lost the camera function on my iPod touch. When I tap the icon I now get a dark blank screen. Any easy solution?

Had the same problem on vacation. Decided to google it. So glad the Support Center was there to help. What a quick fix. Camera function is working again. Have to confess I did not know the sleep button was the little button on the topside right of the ipod.

  • TS3274 When i turn ipad on, there's a dark blue blank screen

Ipad 2 ran out of battery, put it onto charge, came to it this evening, and nothing there except a dark blue, blank screen.
Tried holding 2 buttons for upto 40 secs - no change.
Screen changes colour from off (black) to blue shade when home button pressed.
    Otherwise, nothing.
    Worked fine last night.

Has the unit EVER been jailbroke?
If "No," first try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

  • Blank Screen after start-up chime, won't start

I'm rather perplexed as to what's happened to my PowerBook. I'll run throught it
    PowerBook 12" 1.33 768
    Background:
I've just updated it to 10.4.4, which caused it to get stuck at the Apple symbol and spinning wheel. I had to restart in single user mode and run applejack, restart again and it was fine.
Recently the PowerBook started to not wake from sleep, I'd have hold down the power button then restart it. I thought it had done teh same thing today, but this time it makes the start-up chime but gets no further than a blank (dark, black) screen.
I tried inserting the Mac OS X CD and start up holding down the C key, but still same blank screen (with the added benefit that I'm now unable to remove the CD)
I tried plugging it into an external monitor, but nothing.
I've tried resetting the Preference RAM and the PMU. With some limited success. On occasion after resetting the PRAM, turning it off then back on, it starts with something like a extra blow of air from the fan and white blank screen instead of a black one. It then won't turn off at all, the only way is to pull the power and the battery.
I've noticed that when the ac adapter is plugged in and i've the white screen it flashes very quickly, orange.
I tried starting in Tartget disc mode connected to an iMac, the disc doesn't appear.
I tried starting up with an external firewire drive attached, nothing.
I've tried starting holding the keys for open firmware mode, nothing.
I've removed the AirPort card, no change.
I removed the extra 512mb RAM with no change.
The screen is clearly working, has anyone any ideas how to get it started?
Any help would be appreciated, it's a second hand PowerBook and so has no AppleCare.
    Cheers
    Stuart

I had the EXACT same problem happen to me, Stuartea71. My PowerBook crashed on the on Feb. 4th and I still can't figure it out. I had just dowloaded the 10.4.4 update, bought iLife 06, and ordered a new battery.
I tried every single thing that you did above. I finally called customer support, and walked me through a few things which I had already tried, but she finally pin pointed something in disk utility that I missed. My disk would not mount. In red letters it said "failing." She told me that was a internal HD problem that needs to be fixed by a certified tech.
I did something I'd never done before. I put my HD to sleep to optimize battery performance. I work with podcasts and downloaded a large file. Unfortunately I forgot my battery setting. I chalk it up as a lesson learned, and just bit the bullet and ordered a MacBook Pro.
BTW... if you all customer service they basically read directly from the Apple Website. I paid $49 dollars for someone to tell me my mac was broken and send it in.

  • Ibook g3 OSX 10.2.8 was upgraded to 10.4 but screen went black, sound fine.  How do I revert to 10.2.8 with blank screen?

So here's what happened.  The Apple Store Geniuses generously upgraded my ibook g3 with OSX 10.2.8 to OSX 10.4 via USB port since my CD drive no longer works.  But the screen suddenly went black, sound was fine.  Genius was stumped, but when I restarted later I very briefly got an initial screen plus the music that accompanies an initial OS installation before screen went black again.  I really think that OSX 10.4 was more than my ibook g3 could handle.  I don't recall the specifications anymore and can't check them with a black screen, but capacity was fairly limited.  I went back to Apple a few weeks ago to ask them to downgrade my poor ibook g3 to OSX 10.3 which seems more likely to work with my computer's specifications, but was informed that OSX 10.3 is no longer available for them to load via USB.  Today it occured to me that OSX 10.2.8 is still somewhere on my ibook, and if there's some shortcut I can use to restart under 10.2 instead of 10.4, some switch of OS I can make while blind (since the screen is currently dark), I could at least still use the ibook using the old 10.2 OS.  Is there a way to do this switch in OSX while essentially blind?  If not, my ibook is basically a doorstop I originally spent over $600 on 10 years ago.  I really can't afford to just run out an buy new computers as I am disabled and dying a slow painful death from Lyme disease, but can't afford medication to treat my own illness, let alone buy another computer every 5 years.  Please help!

    Hello,
Ok let's see what we can do here.
First thing to try is resetting the PMU. Http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431 it may make no difference but its good practice to do so.
So times it can resolve faults. You say they installed Mac OS X 10.4. Did they setup a user a count and did you see the desktop? Did they simply hand it back to you when the installed failed with a blank screen?
The truth is, in order for you to restore your iBook your going to need the system restore disk. With a broken CD drive this has limitations as you have no real means to install.
The only option would be to use target disk mode on an external drive, but being an early G3 iBook I'm not sure if target disk mode will work. I am going to assume the shop used this method to install via USB.
What would be a good solution is to fit a replacement CD drive. They are often cheap enough to buy and relatively easy to fit on a white duel USB model. Replacement CD drives can be brought from eBay at very little money.
An online guide can help you fit one with the right screwdrivers.
With a replacement drive, you will be open to better options for installing or even using an apple hardware test disk to diagnose any faults with the screen.
Suprised you was left in such a situation by the shop.

  • 2012 Mac Mini blank screen on wake from sleep in Mavericks

I just upgraded from Mt Lion to Mavericks and now my Mac Mini does not awake properly from sleep when I press a key on the keyboard.  It stays dark but I can type in my password even when I can't see the input space and then hit the return and it then the screen functions normally.  I have reset my SMC, zapped PRAM, ran Disk Utilities and DiskWarrior so I think I am covered on these.  I have a Asus monitor connected by HDMI.  Not sure what else to try.  I see the problem surfaces occasionally for other versions of OS X and for a variety of Macs.  Thanks.  Doug

Okay so here is more info as I have been experimenting with this.
Actually my second post is incorrect.  It does stay blank if I put it to sleep but here are the observations:
My Asus 247 monitor upon sleep will go blank and then after a few seconds will show a window saying no HDMI input detected then be blank.  The screen light changes from blue to amber at this point.
Once it is amber and I try to wake the Mac Mini, the light will change back to blue and the monitor displays a message saying HDMI input detected.  Then it stays blank but I can see my cursor in the corner and it displays on the blank screen.  I can move it around normally.
If at this point I turn off the monitor and turn it back on, the screen comes back to normal and I can type in my password and go from there.
In another case if the screen is blank, I can type my password in and then when I hit enter, it is functioning correctly.
I did not have this problem at all in Mt. Lion and nothing else has changed.
Any help/insights would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

  • How to downgrade kernel 3.10 - blank screen problem after upgrade

After a recent upgrade, which included kernel 3.10, my ASUS zenbook ux21a boots into a blank screen as reported in these topics:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=167411
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=167463
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=167518
How do I downgrade to kernel 3.9, please?
On this laptop I only have dual boot Arch and Win8 (but also a vacant partition). My grub timeout is set to 0 seconds because I almost never use windows, hence my problem is to get any control of the PC. I have attempted a fresh install from USB, but it takes me into exactly the same blank screen. I also attempted install of the older arch version, which went ok until post-installation reboot, following which I ended up with the same blank screen - probably because during the installation the new kernel 3.10 was downloaded.
I read in the above topics that people solved the problem by downgrading the kernel - somehow via chrooting from live arch usb. I lack knowledge on how to perform the kernel downgrade - perhaps someone can give instructions or at least tips how to get started.
Interestingly, the same kernel 3.10 upgrade did not cause problems on a very similar predecessor model ASUS us21e - this info may help the advanced guys to diagnose the source of the problem.

Thanks, andrekp, but it didn't work on my UX21A.
Here's what I did (screen stays black all throughout):
    1. Boot the computer. I believe this takes me to login promt at tty1.
    2. I login by blindly entering userid, <enter>, password, <enter>
    3. speaker-test <enter> - I hear noise. Ctl+c to get out (noise stops).
    4. Switch to tty2 by pressing ctl+alt+f2.
    5. In tty2, I login by blindly entering userid, <enter>, password, <enter>; then speaker-test successful on tty2.
    6. Switch back to tty1 by pressing ctl+alt+f1; speaker-test successful again on tty1.
    7. Type startx. I assume that X and openbox are started successfully: I start lxterminal by pressing my custom short-cut keys combo that I specified in openbox's rc.xml; and speaker-test gives me audible noise from within lxterminal.
Again, screen stayed dark as night all the time, so the problem remains.
As my time allows, I try to come up to speed and follow/replicate the attempts to identify/resolve this problem made by more advanced guys in other topics:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=167411
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=167463
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=167518
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=167314
The problem originally arose at # pacman -Syu, which included kernel upgrade from 3.9.9 to 10.3.3. After a later upgrade to 10.3.5, the problem remains. I've enabled 'testing' repositories on my other laptop, UX21E (which doesn't have this problem despite being the closest model!) - and I wait for the new 'testing' kernel to be released in arch, hoping to do a blind upgrade on UX21A and that it solves the problem. I also monitor https://www.kernel.org for when kernel 3.11 becomes available. If I manage to install kernel 3.11 even before it's released in arch-testing, maybe the problem will be gone...
In the mean time, I keep using the UX21A computer having installed Lubuntu on another partition (it has kernel 3.8).
    Thanks again!

  • Random blank screen in SRM 7.0 with IE 10 punching out to catalog

    Hi -
After 4 days of insane hours testing, we're running into a complete brick wall with SRM 7.0 and IE 10.  We have a Punchout Catalog that loads the initial page, but the second the page is submitted to go to the second page inside the catalog, the page throws a blank white screen and you can't continue.
We've more or less ripped the catalog down to bare bones to see if we can get it to submit a form, which we have a couple of times, but then we've had the same code fail other times.
    Its worth noting the following:
    1) SSL is turned on.
    2) we currently use this catalog in production with IE7/8 without any problems.
    3) the catalog is deployed hundreds of times around the world and this is the ONLY instance where anything of the sort is happening.
    4) if you reference the same catalog outside of SAP, with the same browser, it works flawlessly.
    I'm at a loss.  Please...anybody...help?

I'm adding additional information here guys.  I made a more complete post elsewhere.  Here it is:
    Hi -
One of our customers has been standardized on IE8 for punching out to our catalog.   They want to move to IE10, but we're having really bizarre issues during the testing phase.  As a prereq, please note that the way this solution works is that they start their session inside SAP, punchout to our e-catalog, but the site retains a "frameset" (a traditional frameset...not iframes/ajax div etc) with the top frame being a way to return to the SAP system, and the bottom frame being the catalog.  The bottom frame is encoded and we don't really have any way to know if its manipulating our catalog code, or what.
ISSUE: In IE8, there are no issues with the system.  They use our shopping cart, add things to the cart, go to the review cart on the next page, and punch the data back into SAP.  In IE10, it blank screens on the second page, almost like a custom SAP 404 error - just completely blank...when you view source, it IS a 404 "this page cannot be displayed", but the URL that is given is for the internal SAP system, rather than our catalog (which it SHOULD be trying to look for a page on our catalog rather than an internal SAP page.  So its more or less like it doesn't like something on our catalog page, environment, whatever...and then redirects to a internal SAP page that doesn't exist/isn't working correctly).  Every time anything is clicked on the page (form submission, link, etc) that has to refresh the entire page/frame, the system white screens.  We are using iframes (yes, I know .  Ajax issues with IE8 was the driver there, IE8 was a requirement for our customer due to SAP...) to submit certain datapoints on the page, and we don't have any problem submitting to the iframe.  The second you submit to the whole page (or frame, I guess, if you want to look at it that way), white screen/404 issue.
    FACTORS:
    • It works fine in IE8.  It also works perfectly in IE10 OUTSIDE of the frameset SAP is generating.  Even inside of the customers secure environment.  The second SAP gets involved, the issue occurs.  We've never seen this issue with any other deployment of anything, anywhere...other ERPs, other browsers, etc.
    • SSL:  We managed to get the testers to get past the first page by turning off SSL, but they had to work their way outside of the traditional security in SAP as well so I'm not sure if this has any relevance at all.  But SSL compatibility with SAP or frameset as it pertains to IE10 was a thought process.
    • It doesn't seem to be a form submission issue.  We initially thought it might have something to do with the way IE10 interprets frame ID as we were submitting to _self, etc, but turns out traditional links don't work either with no sort of target information.
    • It's definitely on the page load itself, not on the submission of form data to the page, when the white screen happens.  We noticed that half of the page would load for a split second before it white screened.  Initially we thought it was based on something that was being sent, but its definitely past any header submissions or form posts.
    • We pretty much broke apart the entirety of the code and weeded out all kinds of factors and tested them independently and in different combinations...so extensively that I'm almost positive it isn't a traditional coding issue. The result pages ("second page") we set for the tests had almost no content at all...all of which is traditional HTML that has been supported by every browser since the dark ages.  We could not find any true consistent patterns.  Sometimes the user could make it to the second page, other times not (only on the tests, never on the actual catalog), but usually it was the same for all test scenarios (so if we had 9 test scenarios, they'd all fail, or they'd all succeed).
    Conclusions thus far:
    • We're almost positive it isn't code related. However, it could absolutely be caching related?  Although we have the user clearing caching almost every page test, I'm not sure if that clears everything like page load over SSL or something of that nature?
    • Clearly there is some major difference between IE10 and IE8 and how they interpret the same environment.  This might (probably is) just be a SAP issue.  Could it be our SSL type?  What is interpreted differently in those scenarios between the two browsers inside the same SAP wrapper?
Anything else you can think of would be greatly helpful.  We've been testing for countless hours....we have a really technically advanced team...really can't catch a break on this one or find any consistencies. If SAP wasn't a factor, we'd have this solved in 15 minutes.  I'm not really sure what else to explore since the SAP environment is in play.  Thanks for your help!

  • Blank Screen After Today's Updates

I was thrilled to see the new kernel and intel drivers show up in today's updates, but after rebooting, I have a blank screen on my E6410 laptop, which has Intel graphics. The Dell logo comes up, then the Grub menu, and then the screen goes blank. It was working perfectly fine before the update. Did anyone else run across this?
Last edited by jlacroix (2010-11-26 04:14:51)

Same problem here. How do you downgrade anything or change any settings when the screen just goes blank right at the start?
edit: I'll share some more for good measure. I'm on an nvidia gfx so it shouldn't be Intel-related. The system actually seems to be booting since I can log in and sudo reboot in the dark to prompt a reboot, which means I could technically try and fix this without seeing any output. That just seems dumb, though.
edit2: Removing vga=773 from the kernel line at boot at least restores cli visibility. startx returns "no screens found" so I'll try a downgrade.
edit3: Downgrading to 2.35, along with downgrading nvidia & nvidia-utils to 256-something as well as ndiswrapper and tiacx finally got me back to where I need to be with X working fine.

  • The 10.4.8 Blank Screen Wake Up

My powerbook pro was working fine until I installed the 10.4.8 update. Now when it wakes up from sleep, it fails to a blank screen for about 30 seconds and then wakes up--like something is doing a partial reboot. It used to just wake up with no reboot sequence, but since 10.4.8 it has progessively gotten slower and the wake up is such an annoyance that I no longer put it to sleep. Has anyone else seen this problem? Any solutions.

sorry your going through this as a new mac user. I've been using mac's now for about 20 years and 10.4.8 is the first really bad and IMHO defective update they've ever released. Just sit tight as Apple is great at addressing these issues and with all the posts here I'm sure they're working to resolve the problems.
As for the wireless, my problem was fixed by clicking on "Use Interference Robustness" in the drag down window, upper right hand corner where the 5 bars are to show airport signal strength.
Also search for info on 'preferred networks' here. That modification in network preferences helps as well.
As for the darker screen. Can't help you with that one.

  • Blank Screen Flash at Preview & Publish

After capturing "live video" for my captivate 3
project I encountered strange blank screen flashes in between the
slides. I called tech support and they gave the following guidance:
    - be sure the file is less than 50 MB (if not split into
multiple projects and link them in branching tab)
    - Add a blank slide at the end or middle of the project and
set the duration to the shortest time (~.1 sec)
    - re-save and then review to see if the blank screen remains
    in the project
If the blank screen remains they suggested creating a new
project and then linking to that new project from the branching
    tab.
I'll post a follow-up once I run some of these recommended
    methods.
    Brad

    Hi Brad
Usually the "flash" happens because each slide has been
recorded as a full motion slide. One way around this is to grab a
screen capture of your slide as it ends. Then set that as the
    background image.
You might also want try configuring the background color of
the slides as dark or medium gray. Typically the background color
is white. This can make it really noticable when the transitions
occur between slides. To do that, you examine the properties of the
slide and configure the background color there.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Dv5 1002nr blank screen n beep code of series of 3 beeps

Hi...I have this dv5 1002nr laptop..upon boot it gives a blank screen and a series of 3 beeps three times..the beep codes I found say its the memory..I tried that to no avail..what would the next step to try..any ideas?

    Hey there, kahlic
I see you laptop is unable to boot and you're getting a beep code of 3 beeps when turning the device on.
You were right in your assessment of this sequence being indicative of a memory problem. However, you say you've attempted some sort of troubleshooting to no avail. What steps did you take to try to solve the issue with the memory?
Did you remove all DIMM modules from the motherboard and replace them one at a time, attempting a boot on each single installation?
If you have not, try this and see how this affects your boot success.
While you're removing the dimm cards, conduct a visual examination of the cards and the seating to make sure there are no cracks, build-up(black substance on the contact surface), or dust. The contacts should be a dull golden color devoid of any dark marks or irregularities.
If reseating your dimms do not solve the issue, you may be required to purchase new memory for your system.
Are you aware of your device's warranty status?
