Blank screen of death after iphoto 11 freeze

Dear iphoto users
Last night after a deep freeze during iphoto 11 presentation my Imac is stuck in the blank screen during reboot, no way to recover it (all devices disconnected, zapped PRAM, reset PMU and so on).
Disk seems OK after a check in Single user mode, I can even access disk content from LAN. I cannot even start from the DVD: it make some noise but the device is not recognize (booting with option key only HD is recognized as bootable device).
Any advice? TIA

Try the repair method from this Apple Doc: FSCK - File System Check
To start up in single-user mode
1. Restart the computer.
2. Immediately after the startup sound, press and hold both the Command (⌘) and "s" keys on your keyboard. The computer will display a series of text messages, at which time you may release these keys.   When the computer has started up, it will display a command line prompt (#). The computer is now in single-user mode.
How to Run the File System Check from the Command Line Once you have reached a command line, follow these steps to use fsck:
1. At the prompt, type: fsck -fy (NOTE: there is a space between the k and the “-”) The fsck utility will go through five "phases" and then return information about the disk's utilization and fragmentation. Once the check is finished, if no issue is found, you should see "** The volume  appears to be OK."   If fsck alters, repairs, or fixes anything, it will display the message:
****** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
2 - IMPORTANT: If this message appears, repeat the "fsck -fy" command until this message no longer appears. It is not unusual for your computer to require several "passes" of fsck, because first-pass repairs may uncover additional errors. Run it until you get two consecutive times with an "OK" result.
3. When fsck reports that no problems were found, type: reboot
4. Press Return.
If you can get into Single User Mode and run the file system check it might be able to fix the damage to the system that appears to have occurred.  Worth a try.

  • Qosmio F20 blue screen of death after shutdown

    Hi there,
I get the blue screen of death after shutdown on my Qosmio F20 laptop.
    Error is IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.
I assume that it is somehow related to tv tuner card.
I have tried to restore system - no good. After restoration for some time it was OK. But then BSOD appeared again.
Sometimes it also appears when I connect USB HDDs or even when I insert DVD disk.
And for shure everytime I shut laptop down.
    Has anybody got ideas?

    Hi
Reading you last message I really dont know what you expect from this forum ?:|
We all here can provide only some suggestions and opinions.
Without any notebook tests and checks nobody will be able to provide a magic solution
    I hope you understand this.
So back to the notebook issue.
There is a one way to find out if the issue could be related to the software or hardware.
You have to reinstall the notebook with the Toshiba recovery CD. If the same BSOD will appear after the installation from the recovery CD then the chance are that the hardware is faulty!
I think you should check this out.

  • Blue Screen of Death after GPIB Software Drivers 2.1 install, nipsbfw.sys, nipalk.sys

I get a blue screen of death after I upgraded the GPIS Software Drivers to 2.1. The screen complains about the following files: nipsbfw.sys and nipalk.sys.
I'll copy down the exact message and post it...

    Hello fkwok
First, make sure GPIB software driver 2.1 is the correct driver for your operating system and board by clicking here.
If you are using Windows 2000, this KnowledgeBase is extremely useful.
If these suggestions do not solve your problem, please post the exact message and I will look into the issue some more. Have a great day!

  • White screen of death after 3 mins of usage

Hiyah, so my iphone got the so called "White screen of death" after 3 minutes of usage, i've tried restore and all of that but without success.
    What should i do?
Send it in for repair? (seems really ridicilous if have to since it was bought the same day)
    or
Take it back to the store where i bought it and ask for a new one?
Thanks in advance, oh yeah.. i live in Sweden.

Standard troubleshooting steps in the following order:
    1. Reset: Press the sleep/wake button & home button at the same time, keep pressing until you see the apple logo, then release. Ignore the slide to power off.
    If no change, continue:
    2. Restore your phone from your most recent backup, Note, however: if the problem is related to corrupt data in your phone's backup, while this will restore a fresh OS, it will also restore the problem.
    If no change, continue:
    3. Restore as a "new" phone in itunes & re-sync your content. All saved data will be lost.
If no change, make an appointment at an Apple store, as you most likely have a hardware problem. There are no more user troubleshooting steps available.

  • Blank screen of death

    Dear imac users
Last night after a deep freeze during iphoto 11 presentation I rebooted my IMac (late 2006) but it is stuck in the blank screen, no way to recover it (all devices disconnected, zapped PRAM, reset PMU and so on).
Disk seems OK after a check in Single user mode, I can even access disk content from LAN. The worst issue is that I cannot even start from the DVD or diagnostic disc: it make some noise but the device is not recognized (booting with option key only HD is recognized as bootable device).
    Any advice? TIA

Finally I had in the bootable devices list the usb key I prepared and the SL dvd but the blank screen resulted even trying to boot from these devices, quite unusual behavior I cannot track other experiences of this kind....

  • Blue Screen of Death After RAW Compatibility Update

My friend updated her 13" Black MacBook yesterday, specifically the "Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 2.3". After a reboot, she got the Apple "Blue Screen of Death", with no login window showing. Looking at system.log, there's a section that looks to be the culprit (this began after restarting due to the install of the update):
Nov 7 13:55:29 Philbert /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOS/loginwindow[31]: Login Window Application Started

    Nov 7 13:56:02 Philbert com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.WindowServer[70]): Exited abnormally: Hangup
Here are some things I've observed/tried, many from sources via the Internet:
    - I'm able to login in single-user mode
    - I'm not able to login in Safe Mode (hangs on white screen with Apple logo)
    - I've tried booting off the 10.5 install DVD and running Disk Utility - verify/repair disk, this comes back ok. However, if I try to verify/repair permissions, it runs for about 10 - 20 mins then freezes. I let the frozen process run overnight (10-12 hours) and no feedback. I can move the mouse, but I cannot select anything.
    - When the laptop is booted and on the blue screen, I can connect to it via AFP
    - I've tried manually changing the permissions of "/", by doing - chmod 775 /; chmod 1775 /;
    - I've tried removing the com.apple.WindowServer.plist and com.apple.loginscreen.plist files in case they were corrupted by the update
    - I tried running the "installer" command to re-install the update package from the command line. I run it with the "verbose" flags, I get no output and the process hangs.
Since I can connect via AFP I figure I'll be backing the data up and re-installing OS X. Pretty lame though, considering this failure was caused by running a Software Update. Anyone have a last minute suggestion for me before I go down that path?
I have the full system.log if anyone is curious!
    Cheers!

i don't think this is a router issue...i believe it's a hardware issue...this error occured when computer is not getting sufficient memory, drivers are not installed correctly or due to invalid driver installation of any devices installed on the computer...to just isolate the problem try connecting computer directly to the modem and check are you are getting a same error message or not and let me know.

  • Blank screen with cursor after logging in

After upgrading to Windows 8.1 from windows 8 (which took much much longer than a clean installation),on being prompted to log in, all I see is a blank screen (the cursor works though) after logging in. Upon doing a lot of googling, I am utterly confused
about the issue and its possible solutions. Can you give me a definite solution to this? The task manager opens via alt+ctrl+del, explorer.exe is not running and that sums up everything I can do with my swanky new Windows 8.1. The following are my

  • Black screen of death after warning "Disk 1 has the same disk identifiers as one or more disks connected to the system. "

    Hi,
I am having the same problem / event warning, only one second after the warning occurs, I face a black screen of death leaving me with no other option than to switch off and reboot. After reboot I can work for some time but as far as I can see there is a
spontaneous re-occurance of the same warning and subsequent black screen of death.
It is hugely frustrating and don't seem to be able to solve it. It occurred in W8/W8.1 and W10 TP. All hardware seems fine. There are no other events that occur near the time when the BSOD occurs so I suppose its that.
HD (SSD'S) seem to have unique identifiers so I don't understand it at all. It does not matter whether I am browsing the internet, rendering images or simply leaving my laptop untouched (M6500 DELL).
Please help. It occurs 3 - 5 times a day and it seems unworkable.
    Mike

    Hi MAVH2014,
Which version are you running? Do you installed all updates for current Technical Preview?
Can you find any related events in Event Viewer?

  • Windows 7 - Blue screen of death after Boot Camp install

Hello! I have done some searches with no answers, so...
After installing Windows 7 from scratch I then install Boot Camp 3.0 which then leads to the Windows blue screen of death upon reboot. I then have to recover Windows to the previous state prior to installing Boot Camp.
    Help!?

Most likely, Apple HFS read-only, which is AppleHFS.sys and AppleMNT.sys - rename those and see.
You might want to run chkdsk after all this to make sure there are no errors with the drive and file system.
Windows Explorer will not accept HFS+ filenames with special characters and will "green bar" and hang when it does, too.
The faulty HFS driver is a valid concern.
    Rename AppleHFS.sys and AppleMNT.sys
By doing the following you will disable HFS mount / read mode on windows XP, Vista, 7.
Navigate to c:/windows/system32/drivers/AppleMNT.sys, rename the AppleMNT.sys file to something like AppleMNT_keep.sys or something of your likings.
The faulty HFS driver is a valid concern. It seems to happen on many systems.
    You find it in Windows/system32/drivers/AppleHFS.sys
Renaming to AppleHFS_disabled.sys will avoid the blue screens until you have found another solution or Apple updates Bootcamp 3
After renaming both myself because they are no longer "*.sys" or something? they are gone. In my case AppleHFS prevented Windows Backup from running to end and was causing error "some files skipped" and while some might find reading convenient, I prefer Windows not have even read-only access.
You can probably do better with MacDrive, or probably Paragon's HFS driver, to read AND write if needed, to HFS from Windows.

  • Blue screen of death after installing Boot Camp on Windows 7

Hello and thanks for the help!
Brnad new user to Boot Camp here. After a new install of Windows 7, I install Boot Camp but then when rebooting Windows I get the blue screen of death. When letting Windows attempt a repair, it fails and I am forced to Recover Windows 7 to a state before I installed Boot Camp.
    Help!?

Solution for this problem is simple. You have to apply Mac Book Air SMC Update 1.7 which you can do from Mac OS X with Software Update or you can download required update manually from Apple support site. If you don't use BootCamp and have installed Windows without it, you will have to boot Mac OS X from external drive just to apply required update. After you applied SMC update, you can boot to Windows and apply BootCamp update 3.2 and 3.3.
There is a known problem with Mac Book Air EFI Update 2.3, which you won't be able to apply and it will show in Software Update every time you check for updates. There is no solution for it yet.
You get BSOD if you have BootCamp 3.1 and Windows 7 SP1 installed and you have commited Windows update which will break applemtp.sys as your SMC firmware is too old. It applies to Windows 7 32 bit and 64 bit versions in BootCamp or native install.

  • White Screen of Death (after restoring)

Guys, I've been dealing with the White Screen of Death, but it was always solved by turning it off/on, or restarting it.
The white screen used to happen when leaving my iPod for 3 days without using it.
However this time, 4 days passed without touching it, and I can't make it work.
I tried restoring it from a recent backup without success.
    What could I do?
Is it hardware or software problem?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Blue screen of death after ram upgrade on a Toshiba Satellite C655 laptop

I ordered an upgrade for a Toshiba Satellite C655(PSC08U-02D037) running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I've trying for a month to get this to work consistently. When I first installed it, it worked fine for the first few days, but then after that I kept getting an error that would pop up "Display has Stopped Responding And Recovered" and the screen would flicker turn to black for a second. It didn't happen a lot at first, but then it got progressively worse to the point that it would crash my browsers, and sometimes when I tried to play certain videos, I would get the blue screen of death, and then the computer would have to restart.
I updated my bios, graphics drivers, I checked to see if maybe I failed to install it properly and reinstalled it, no avail. Finally I just took the ram out, and then I stopped having these issues. Which leads me to believe that it may have something to do with the memory upgrade. I ran the scanner as suggested when I was looking to upgrade, and what was recommended was a ( System 2gb DDR3-1600 Sodimm 1.35v CL11 ) ram stick part number CT6316802, which is the one I ended up ordering. I'm not sure what else to do but assume that what I ordered is either defective or just doesn't work with my laptop.

    Hi jinjoe,
I am sorry for the issues you are experiencing with your upgrade. How is this memory installed? Is it just one module or did you purchase two? Did you install it with any exisitng RAM? If you have two modules have you tried installing one module at a time? This would help us determine if the issue is with one defective memory module or both causing the issue.

  • Blank screen & no booting after running BIOS update on Satellite A200-1AE

Here is my problem with my A200-1AE (PSAECE) Notebook:
I downloaded the latest BIOS update from the Toshiba download drivers library to install Win XP since finally the drivers are realized. (Note the update clearly stated to run ONLY if you want to install XP on you NB).
So I unzipped the file and after hitting the .exe file it started updating the BIOS on its own without me giving the liberty to do so. Half way the N/B froze for about 20 minutes and as I didnt know what else to do so I reset it.
Result? The NB does NOT boot. I press the power button, the Hard Drive icon flashes 2-3 times as well as the DVD drive, I get a blank screen and the power cord & power button icons constantly on. I removed the battery and the power cord for 48 hours hoping it will reset the BIOS on its own to no avail.
The BIOS battery is under the touchpad which means I have to disassemble the whole laptop and I am not ready to do so. I dont know if on the motherboard there are BIOS reset jumpers and I need someones help as to what I should do. I am starting to think that things where MUCH easier back to when I just had a desktop PC.
THERE must be something I can do other that taking it to the service center and pay half the value of the laptop in repairs.... PLS HELP Im desperate....

    Hi there,
first of all: a notebook is not a desktop and such mobile computer does not have jumpers like a deskop computer. They surely have something to delete the BIOS but I am not so sure IF resetting the BIOS could help you.
I guess you will have to send your machine to a service center for repair because in such cases you will have no other option. Do you have still warranty on this machine?

  • Grey Screen of Death after using Migration Assistant

Just got a new iMac 27" i7 today. Starts up fine until running migration assistant. After which shortly after the grey apple logo appears I get the Grey Screen of Death™ saying I need to restart the computer. Restarting does not help, running Disk Utility from the startup disk does not help. Checked for bad ram, not the ram. Unplugged and let sit for 10 minutes. Nothing. Erased drive, reinstalled OS, started up fine. Ran Migration assistant again, focusing on apps only, not settings. GSOD™ again. Currently I'm reinstalling the OS after erasing the drive again.

I see, using MA over a wireless network isn't highly recommended as it literally could take days or even a week to wirelessly move GB's of data over wi-fi.
However I'm glad you figured out the problem. The problem with Quicken 07 may be that it relies on Rosetta to run on Intel based machines. Unless you have Rosetta on your new iMac that could have been the problem however I"m not sure why. As it turns out I also use Quicken (dreadful software!) and used MA to move it to another machine however my installation went smooth as silk. When I first started Quicken on the new machine Snow Leopard sensed I didn't have Rosetta and prompted me to download it which I did.

  • [Solution] Blank screen at bootup after installing updates

For those experiencing this issue, this is down to an Intel graphics update that Windows Update installed. There is a fix to it in the form of a software update which I have explained about in this thread: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-3000-and-Valueline/LENOVO-C-SERIES-ALL-IN-ONE-DESKTOP-PC/m-p/3864...
It is slightly lengthy but if you follow the instructions line for line it'll be done properly and in no time. I'm not a staff member at Lenovo, I'm actually a customer but I thought I'd create a thread if anyone else comes here having the same issue.
It would be great if a moderator of the Lenovo forum would sticky this thread for reference to customers that come across this problem when they apply updates to their new computer. You may find after only a few days of owning your Lenovo C series computer that you experience this issue.
    My personal tech blog

I ckecked all the cables and they are secured. I also popped out the videocard and put it back in but i still have a blank screen on startup.  I talked with a guy at my local PC Club store and he said that judging by my story it could be a power supply, motherboard or cpu problem.  I swapped out the power supply with a new one and it still has a blank screen when powered on.  I forgot to tell you that im running windows xp pro and a 2.8ghz prescot with HT.  Anyone have any ideas?
