Blank screen on wake up !!

Been facing issues with the wake up feature since i bought my 13" mac air 2 weeks back .. sometimes when i open the lid to wake the machine up from sleep it either freezes on me or throws a blank screen .. the machine becomes completely unresponsive and am left with no other option but to reboot .. happens almost every other day , very frustrating .. called apple care and they looked clueless .. i know many people are having the same or similar issues with the instant on feature , anybody found a solution yet , or does anybody know if this is a software or hardware related ?

But the issue of this thread - blank screen on wake up - still ensues. Lid close - open the screen flashes on for a split second and goes to black. I close the lid and wait 10 sec to reopen and the screen turns on, or I simply wait long enough with black screen and it eventually lights up. It's like waiting for a long wakeup.
That sounds exactly like the issue I had. I assume it's some sort of software thing, but the Genius Bar just replaced my machine. I've seen reports of it here and on a few other sites.
What happened with mine is that about 50% of the time, when the computer (not the display) went to sleep, it would display a black screen when waking up. The backlight was on, as the Apple logo on the top of the lid lit up. Sometimes it would eventually turn on. Sometimes it required a keystroke. Sometimes it required powering down. A few times, it was difficult to get it to start up even after it powered down.
I had "SmartSleep" on my old MacBook Air, so I thought that might be messing it up, but it kept doing that even after I uninstalled it.
So far, I haven't had that issue with my replacement MacBook Air. BTW, my first one was acting up right from the start, so from my anecdotal evidence, it seems you either have this issue or you don't.

  • 2012 Mac Mini blank screen on wake from sleep in Mavericks

I just upgraded from Mt Lion to Mavericks and now my Mac Mini does not awake properly from sleep when I press a key on the keyboard.  It stays dark but I can type in my password even when I can't see the input space and then hit the return and it then the screen functions normally.  I have reset my SMC, zapped PRAM, ran Disk Utilities and DiskWarrior so I think I am covered on these.  I have a Asus monitor connected by HDMI.  Not sure what else to try.  I see the problem surfaces occasionally for other versions of OS X and for a variety of Macs.  Thanks.  Doug

Okay so here is more info as I have been experimenting with this.
Actually my second post is incorrect.  It does stay blank if I put it to sleep but here are the observations:
My Asus 247 monitor upon sleep will go blank and then after a few seconds will show a window saying no HDMI input detected then be blank.  The screen light changes from blue to amber at this point.
Once it is amber and I try to wake the Mac Mini, the light will change back to blue and the monitor displays a message saying HDMI input detected.  Then it stays blank but I can see my cursor in the corner and it displays on the blank screen.  I can move it around normally.
If at this point I turn off the monitor and turn it back on, the screen comes back to normal and I can type in my password and go from there.
In another case if the screen is blank, I can type my password in and then when I hit enter, it is functioning correctly.
I did not have this problem at all in Mt. Lion and nothing else has changed.
Any help/insights would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

  • HP PavilionSlimline s34011fPC desktop w/ windows 7 hangs at a blank screen on wake-up

This function worked earlier. Now the computer starts the wake-up process but after 8 seconds (still a blank screen) everthing stops.  It hangs there with no computer activity , an d no response.  The only way out is to powe off. It comes back saying it didn't shut down properly.

    Hello @Shoeless_Joe,
I understand that your HP Pavilion Slimline s3012n Desktop PC has started wakng to a blank screen and that the issue was not there before. I recommend that you follow the steps set out in the HP Support document: Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 7) to restore your computer back to a point in time where this was not an issue. I suspect an update of some kind is not working correctly and this should correct it and allow the update to come through again hopefully functioning correctly this time.
The Windows restore feature will not adversely affect any of your personal files, but any applications that have been installed or settings that have been changed between now and the date you restore back to will have to be reinstalled or re-changed.
Please re-post if you require additional support. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • Mountain lion, Get a blank screen when wake up.

The problem started when i connect my Dell U2711
    to flash 5870's displayport
The system works fine . When my pro sleep i can't wake display up.
(Get only blank screen). But system wake up fine
(i can use screen sharing to control my pro)
The problem gone when i connect To 5870's DVI port.
I started found this problem after installing mountain lion,
    Doesn't found the problem with 10.7, 10.6
    Help me please!

I had this problem last evening also.  Tried soft and hard reset.  No change.  The last video I had been watching on the plane I had paused and sworn to iPod to play some music.  I later tuned the iPad off and put it away.  When I later tried to resume the movie at my Hotel all I got was a blank screen...every time.  What I just did to get the problem resolved was to go to iPod controls panel played the paused song and then closed the iPod app.  Then went to Videos and now the video came back where I had paused it.  Tapped Done in the top left corner and now I have all my videos back for access.  This must definitely be a bug between playing videos and playing music.  I had never paused a movie and listened to music before.....should work for you.

  • Mac Mini Has Black Blank Screen on Wake Up

    Hi Forum
I have started to Sleep/Wake my Mac Mini between midnight and 6 am when not in use and i see that on wake in the morning it appears to have a Blank or Black screen.!?!? anyone have this?
It seems to be working. i think this as i log on to it using my MBP, as the Mini is headless. When i connect ot the Mini on my MBP, i wouldnt be able to activate Screen Share if the Mini didnt react to being connected. Its in my sidebar to connect to, and does connect, and i can access its files. I dont have a screen connected directly to it.
Any ideas? Its fully up to date. i can turn it off and on and i get full view and functionality, although i didnt want to be doing that each and every day

    Hey all,
I have the same issues right now, I have a late 2012 MacMini attached via HDMI to a 65 inch LED LG Smart TV. Power saving settings > both on never. Schedule settings > Shutdown at 2am every day, Wake or start up at 8am every day. Security / Privacy settings > Login without password. Screen saver settings > change picture every minute. This is all in an attempt to keep the MacMini going so I can use it as my HTPC.
I am controling the MM using a MBA 2013 via screen share, this works fine when the TV is powered on, but after turning it off the screen sharing becomes sluggish and unresponsive, also causing it to freeze, go black and make the cursor work like a paintbrush/eraser when navigating the screen,  basically everything stated here in the forums. Is Apple ever going to fix this bug? the whole reason I wanted to use Mac Osx is because I want to get rid of Windows all together and create a pure Mac environment in my home.
I have been scouring the forums and google to find a solution for this problem which is becoming quite a disillusion for me right now and it is defeating the purpose of having the MM for my HTPC use.
Look forward to any all replies, cheers, Plucka

  • Shaky screen on wake up?

This started two weeks ago..The screen is shaky and is pixelated on wake up. Sometimes it stops and other times I get the black restart box. I have reset the PRAM and reinstalled TIGER. Any ideas. Once the machine restarts it is fine until it sleeps again.

  • Blank Screen or Freeze???

Bought new mac late last year, it has been OK, until few weeks ago. My Mac went blank itself for no reason but not fully shut down as I can see full grey on screen background but nothing on it. I could see that the screen is still on but no mouse pointer on screen nor the keyboard won't functionally at all. I have to press and hold off button for while to turn it off then turn it back on. It happens few times now. Does anyone know how to solve this problem.

I was having the blank screen on wake up problem and had changed my power management settings, go ahead and check out http://www.unofficialmac.com/post/27756671.

  • The 10.4.8 Blank Screen Wake Up

My powerbook pro was working fine until I installed the 10.4.8 update. Now when it wakes up from sleep, it fails to a blank screen for about 30 seconds and then wakes up--like something is doing a partial reboot. It used to just wake up with no reboot sequence, but since 10.4.8 it has progessively gotten slower and the wake up is such an annoyance that I no longer put it to sleep. Has anyone else seen this problem? Any solutions.

sorry your going through this as a new mac user. I've been using mac's now for about 20 years and 10.4.8 is the first really bad and IMHO defective update they've ever released. Just sit tight as Apple is great at addressing these issues and with all the posts here I'm sure they're working to resolve the problems.
As for the wireless, my problem was fixed by clicking on "Use Interference Robustness" in the drag down window, upper right hand corner where the 5 bars are to show airport signal strength.
Also search for info on 'preferred networks' here. That modification in network preferences helps as well.
As for the darker screen. Can't help you with that one.

  • Crisis!!! sleep/wake button broken, blank screen, unable to restart... HELP!!

my sleep/wake button is not functioning and i just had a black screen. My friends are able to call me and they tell me it rings but i just get a blank screen. i really dont know how to restart and beg someone to  help me. Thank you... (iPhone 5)

If there is a broken button there is nothing you can do. Take the phone to an Apple store and they will replace it, as all 5's are still in warranty. Make a genius bar reservation first at https://www.apple.com/retail.

  • My  Macbook Air wakes up with a blank screen. Why do I have to shut down and start up to wake it up?

I use Mountain Lion on a macbook Air. When it goes to sleep  it wakes up with a blank screen, I have to shut down and start up again to wake it up. Can anyone help?

I had a similar thing on an old MacBook Pro where if I closed the lid, then reopened it before the sleep cycle took over, it would have a blank screen. I had to close the lid until the power light pulsed, then it would wake normally.
    Any similarities?

  • Ipad2 wakes up to a blank screen after iOS5 upgrade

I have noticed two  peculiar issues after iOS5 upgrade. My ipad2 screen awakens to a blank black screen after password input; this only happens when an app or a program was open when it locks. I have to close and reopen the cover and reenter password to get to the usual screen.
Additionally I have noticed the icons for several of my iapps become invisible, the name of the icon is visible and the app/program opens up if I click on the name
    any suggestions?

  • Started as a Blank Screen, now my MacBook Pro is useless.

I have a serious issue that has cost me well over $2,000 now and I am getting ******. I am a programmer and I have multiple projects on my Mac that I have now lost. I do have a Time Machine backup but its weeks old. Didn’t realize Snow Leopard was the new Vista.
Snow Leopard does not work and I cannot restore my computer back to Leopard. The issue I am having is the blank screen bug that is caused by Snow Leopard. When using 10.6.0 I was able to resolve the blank screen by simply reinstalling Snow Leopard.
I updated to 10.6.1 and I now have the blank screen and this time my MacBook Pro is unresponsive. For me to get the blank screen all I need to do is put my computer to sleep. When it goes to sleep there is 50/50 chance it will recover. This is the first time it happened with 10.6.1, the issue is now more sever, my assumption is 10.6.1 caused this. This is not a hardware issue; I have already eliminated that possibility. Taking the MacBook Pro to the Apple store is out of the question. They had a Mac Pro of mine for 2 weeks and said it was fixed, when I got it back it was still broken. I fixed it in 3 hours…. They almost broke my raid card in the process. The so-called Apple Geniuses are idiots.
I’m turning here as a last resort, I’m not expecting to get this resolved but it’s worth a try. In a nutshell, my problems as of right now are:
    1. Mac will not boot – I have a blank screen, like my computer is in sleep mode and won’t wake.
    2. I have a CD in the drive that I cannot remove. I tried all methods to remove it, still no luck. I am about to take it apart to manually remove the CD.
    3. I have already tried resetting my PRAM and NVRAM, no change.
    4. I have tried to use Target mode but it seems useless. I have tried to use every mode to boot that Apple has and still it’s a no go.
    5. This is not the possible nVidia graphics card issue because it’s not just a video problem. I am out of warranty so it may seem a useful escape goat.
    6. I have upgraded my HardDrive and my memory. I have no issues with this hardware, I know the issues are not related to the new hardware installed, I already tested this hardware and this issue only happens on Snow Leopard.
All that’s let for me to do as of this moment is to get my refund for Snow Leopard and move back to Windows…. I really hate Windows but it’s more stable than Snow Leopard.
To any that can help, thanks; if not, hope this doesn’t happen to you.

Using process of elimination, Snow Leopard has ruined my MacBoook Pro. I have tested my HD and Memory in other MBP’s and they work fine. I had no issues till I used SL and it is obvious that it was the cause of the issue. I’m sure Apple will deny this claim….. Be warned.
I now have a $2,500 paper weight. I’m done with Apple…. Hackintosh was more stable anyways.

  • Blank Screen after start-up chime, won't start

I'm rather perplexed as to what's happened to my PowerBook. I'll run throught it
    PowerBook 12" 1.33 768
    Background:
I've just updated it to 10.4.4, which caused it to get stuck at the Apple symbol and spinning wheel. I had to restart in single user mode and run applejack, restart again and it was fine.
Recently the PowerBook started to not wake from sleep, I'd have hold down the power button then restart it. I thought it had done teh same thing today, but this time it makes the start-up chime but gets no further than a blank (dark, black) screen.
I tried inserting the Mac OS X CD and start up holding down the C key, but still same blank screen (with the added benefit that I'm now unable to remove the CD)
I tried plugging it into an external monitor, but nothing.
I've tried resetting the Preference RAM and the PMU. With some limited success. On occasion after resetting the PRAM, turning it off then back on, it starts with something like a extra blow of air from the fan and white blank screen instead of a black one. It then won't turn off at all, the only way is to pull the power and the battery.
I've noticed that when the ac adapter is plugged in and i've the white screen it flashes very quickly, orange.
I tried starting in Tartget disc mode connected to an iMac, the disc doesn't appear.
I tried starting up with an external firewire drive attached, nothing.
I've tried starting holding the keys for open firmware mode, nothing.
I've removed the AirPort card, no change.
I removed the extra 512mb RAM with no change.
The screen is clearly working, has anyone any ideas how to get it started?
Any help would be appreciated, it's a second hand PowerBook and so has no AppleCare.
    Cheers
    Stuart

I had the EXACT same problem happen to me, Stuartea71. My PowerBook crashed on the on Feb. 4th and I still can't figure it out. I had just dowloaded the 10.4.4 update, bought iLife 06, and ordered a new battery.
I tried every single thing that you did above. I finally called customer support, and walked me through a few things which I had already tried, but she finally pin pointed something in disk utility that I missed. My disk would not mount. In red letters it said "failing." She told me that was a internal HD problem that needs to be fixed by a certified tech.
I did something I'd never done before. I put my HD to sleep to optimize battery performance. I work with podcasts and downloaded a large file. Unfortunately I forgot my battery setting. I chalk it up as a lesson learned, and just bit the bullet and ordered a MacBook Pro.
BTW... if you all customer service they basically read directly from the Apple Website. I paid $49 dollars for someone to tell me my mac was broken and send it in.

  • How do I get an iPod touch to turn on other than the normal way. It has been dropped and all I can get is a blank screen. Have tried holding the HOME button down for 30 sec. but that didn't work.

How does one get an iPod nano to turn on other than the "normal" way? This one has been dropped and all I can get is a blank screen. I have tried holding down the HOME button to restart it but no go. When I connect it to my computer, I am told to enter the PASSCODE which I cannot do as there is no touchpad.

    David ..
Your topic refers to an iPod touch
Then you say:  How does one get an iPod nano to turn on ......
If it's an iPod touch, try a reset.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, whether it's an iPod nano or touch, it probably needs service >  Apple - Support - Service Answer Center
