Blank/Swapped Icons

My sister is having a problem with her iBook that I have also had on my Powermac G4 and on her iMac. In OS X, sometimes the icons will not display properly. For example, word documents will show up with the powerpoint icon. When the computer is woken from sleep, the icons all change again, so that the word documents might feature a safari icon. It's as though the icons are playing musical chairs. Sometimes, rather than the icons all swapping files, they will simply vanish. The files will be there, and can still be opened by double-clicking their names, but there is no icon. It's as if all normal icons were replaced by a transparent icon.
This is a frustrating issue. It seemed to come and go for me, and went away on its own. It also went away on it's on from the iMac. However, it's been on the iBook for a while now and my sister is getting quite frustrated. She's talking about selling her soul to satan in the form of buying a peecee.
Suggestions? She doesn't want to format.
Thanks in advance.

She has 10.3.9. I haven't had this problem in a long time so I suspect it was fixed in 10.4. I'm just going to get her to upgrade. Stupid to have to do that though.
Apparently her applications folder now features a powerpoint icon.

  • Blank CD icon remains after burning disk

    Hi all,
When I burn a CD (with either the Finder or iTunes) the blank CD icon remains on the desktop even after the disk has been burned.
For instance, if I burn, say, a Beatles CD using iTunes, the original "Untitled CD.fpbf" icon remains on the desktop, and under it another "Beatles" CD icon appears. If I eject the newly-burned CD, the "Untitled CD.fpbf" CD icon remains. If I insert another blank disk, another "Untitled CD.fpbf" CD icon appears. These icons don't disappear until I manually drag them to the trash.
Is there something I can do to stop this?
    Thanks

  • Blank Desktop Icons in Windows 8

I posted this in the Microsoft Windows 8 forum and was directed to post here instead.
We did look for answers before posting, but our specific issue is different than what others have had regarding "blank icons."
After updating our workstations to Windows 8, icons located on a network drive (e.g., in the "W:\ICONS" folder, where drive W is mapped to a shared folder on a server) are displayed as a blank document-- a solid white rectangle with the upper right corner
    folded down.
However, icons located on the workstations' local C drives are displayed correctly-- and if we copy the icons from the server to the workstation they display correctly.
If we go to the shortcut properties and click "change icon," the correct location on the mapped network drive is already listed and the desired icon is already displayed and selected in the window, but re-selecting the icon and applying the
change does nothing-- the desktop shortcut still displays with a "blank document" icon.
We've tried the suggested solution of turning off Windows Explorer, deleting the local icon cache, and rebooting to force Windows to rebuild the icon cache, but it doesn't help either.
The desktop shortcuts work just fine, they are just not displayed with the desired icons.
By the way, the servers are running Windows Server 2008 R2 (if that matters).

Let me ask this a different way. Can someone try the following and tell me what result you get for Step 5?
Given: A workstation running Windows 8, joined to a domain on a network.
Given: A server (Active Directory Domain Controller) running Windows Server 2008 R2. (Not sure the server's OS matters; it's Windows 8 that matters.)
Step 1: Create a dummy text file (or other dummy file) on the Windows 8 workstation.
Step 2: Create a shortcut to the dummy text file on the Windows 8 desktop.
Step 3: Edit the shortcut's properties and change the icon, selecting some icon file (e.g., WHATEVER.ICO) located on the Windows 8 workstation.
My Result: The icon displays correctly on the desktop shortcut.
Step 4: Now copy the icon file and paste it somewhere on the server.
Step 5: Change the shortcut's properties to look for the icon on the server where you copied it to.
My Result: The icon displays correctly in the shortcut properties window, but once I apply the change the desktop shortcut displays a "blank document" icon.
Note: The type of file the shortcut points to is unimportant-- you can try it with a TXT, DAT, EXE, COM, or any other type of file. The issue is with the shortcut's icon, not the shortcut's target.
Interesting Aside: If you change the shortcut so the target is the ICO file itself, the icon is displayed correctly.

  • Missing blank disc icon

OK...what happened to my blank disc icon when I pop one in the drive? I want to drag and drop photos from iPhoto5 onto a disc for a non-mac user, and I can't find my disc...in fact, I can't even find it in the Finder? Anyone know what gives? Thanks,
    Chris

Lori, thanks for the tips - now think I see what is happening.
It looks like, when I play with the General Preferences in Finder, I currently have CDs, DVDs checked to display on my Desktop - but I have an external drive which is split into two drives, so my system is reading these two drives as my CD/DVD drives. The result is, my CD drive does not display on the Desktop at all - or in the Finder Sidebar.
Given all of this, even the instructions link you sent me doesn't work. Any idea how I can rectify this? It is almost as if there's not enough room on the desktop or something.
    Thanks.

  • Blank/Generic Icons for Word & RTF files - a rant

I can't understand why such a simple thing can be made so difficult. If you have .RTF and .DOC files all set to open with Pages, then they have the blank/generic icon. Ofcourse you can change the icon manually but this isn't exactly a solution as you would need to do it everytime you create a new file.
What also gets me is that if you did happen to have WORD on your machine, and you still wanted .doc files to open with pages, the icon for those files would still be blank even though there's an icon right there on your machine especially for those types of files. The only way to get a word icon for word files is to have them opening all the time with Word.
This is the same with RTF files, textedit has an icon for RTF files, but because you want to edit them in Pages you have to put up with a blank icon because there isn't an icon for RTF files inside the Pages package.
I know Mac users tend to scoff at Windows users and vica versa. But, in this instance it's laughable that such a simple thing is made almost impossible to the average user.
It's not much to ask, the ability to specify that all .doc and .rtf files have X icon.

I think the logic is that Pages doesn't ever "save" .doc or .rtf. Pages can "export to", but that's not good enough for some reason.
You cannot say: "This .rtf is a Pages rtf-file. I use Pages do open it and Pages to save it." The only thing you can say is "This .rtf will open with Pages, and then I will have to choose myself which format to save or export to."
One doesn't have to agree with that logic of course.

  • Rdweb empty blank missing icons

Windows 2008 R2 gateway and rdweb on same server (RD)
Windows 2008 R2 session server (TS)
After some time the website rdweb with the published programs (RemoteApp Programs) is empty for the users. I have tried everything and it allways fix itself with a restart. But i know see that when this problem occur, if i then on the TS server only starts
(doubleclick) on the RemoteApp Manager under  Administrative tools - Remote Desktop Services then it takes some time before the programs open, but when it opens it shows a grey box with something like connecting to local host, and when that box dissapear
and the RemoteApp Manager starts up then the icons on the rdweb on RD server is showing and working. After some search on google i see that there are lots of this type of problems and that there isnt any solution to it. But since its enough to start the RemoteApp
Manager program on the TS server, what does that program do and is there any services that is restarted when starting that program or is it possible to add something in the Task Scheduler to start and stop that program once a day?

    Hi,
But since its enough to start the RemoteApp Manager program on the TS server, what does that program do and is there any services that is restarted when starting that program
You may use Process Monitor to get a more detailed process/thread view.
I suspect the issue could be caused by after long period idle time of web page access, Windows System would clear some cache which leads to the blank page.
is it possible to add something in the Task Scheduler to start and stop that program once a day
Yes, it is possible. After located the service name, run commands below are enough:
    Netstop servicename
    Netstart servicename

  • Blank/generic icons in finder's sidebar

Each time I restart my computer I get generic icons for some elements in the finder window's sidebar.
    Here is a screenshot : http://twitpic.com/18x7ma
This happened since I'm using Snow Leopard.
All the ones having "blank" icons are shortcuts to another hard drive (ie: not the startup disk). Using an open command (file › open) from another software and selecting each element restore the original icons.

When creating a Dock alias, you should drag the original item to the Dock, not an alias of it (any item in your Sidebar is an alias.
If this is not the issue go to /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences and delete these 2 files /com.apple.dock.plist
    and com.apple.dock.db.plist
Then restart. This will give you the default Dock, so you'll have to reset yours the way you like it)

  • Blank Pages Icons

    Hi,
I like so much Pages, it's the perfect syntesis between semplicity and professionality.
Can anyone please explain why documents exported from Pages, such as .rtf or .doc, appears like totally blank icons? Since I set them as "open with Pages", I expected them to be like Pages icons but with a little RTF or DOC write in the bottom.
Blank icons give me the idea that something is going wrong. Did I miss anything?
    Thank you.

While Pages can export and read RTF and Word documents, it doesn't include icons for them. Perhaps that's meant to discourage the idea that you can simply save and edit your documents in those formats.
So there's nothing wrong, it's just that you won't see meaningful icons for these formats unless you have an editor (like MS Word or OpenOffice) which claims to understand them.
(Pages also doesn't set the type/creator fields for these documents, so Classic applications won't see them or assign them icons.)
    Hope this helps!

  • Camera swap icon missing on screen

Hi, I wanted to use my tablet to skype and noticed that the icon to swap the camera is missing on the screen. I have tried updating the software but still the icon is not showing Also have checked in settings and any other place i could think of.
Anyone any idea? i have the tablet about 2.5 months but not used the camera really yet hence only just noticed.
    Thanks

Hi, I have tried taking my tablet to the shop, they can't help and gave me some support phone number. Calling them it keeps asking me for a case number which I dont have.
If honest this is very frustrating and the Sony customer care has not impressed so far.
I have looked everywhere and tried everything to find this icon but it's nowhere. Even the people in the shop couldnt find it.
What more can I do to get this sorted??
I am very close to writing a formal complaint.

  • Blank application icon with Simple Finder

I have parental controls turned on for my kids so that they can only see the simple finder. However, one of the application I've approved for them to use, Photo Booth, shows up in their simple finder as a blank icon that I cannot click on. The others work fine. I've tried switching between simple finder and not, but no luck. This has happened before with many icons turning blank, and I had to resort to deleting their account and recreating it. I don't want to go through that exercise again. Any suggestions?

An "encrypted disk image" is something that can be created using tools included with OS X and might be satisfactory for encrypting arbitrary files. The procedure is described here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107333
Keep in mind that the priority with encryption is keeping your data "secure", but not necessarily maintaining the integrity of the data - since the entire contents of the disk image are effectively wrapped up into a single encrypted file, even minor corruption of that file could potentially result in the loss of all of the data so maintaining up to date backups is essential.
There are a few other things to be aware of, for example: When the disk image is mounted, it behaves just like a regular, non-encrypted volume so other users with access to the computer would be able to access its contents. The contents are only secure while the image is not mounted. For this reason, it might make sense to split up files into groups - things for which security isn't as important, or which need to be accessed frequently might benefit from being stored in a .dmg separate from the one containing the most sensitive, infrequently accessed files.
Don't share the contents of the encrypted disk image over the network. Obviously this doesn't make any sense from a security perspective, but aside from that, if a local user and a remote user both make changes to any part of the dmg while it is mounted, there is pretty much guaranteed to be corruption, and a greatly increased risk of data loss.
And unlike "Filevault", a stand alone disk image doesn't come with a "master password" backdoor so if the password is lost, its contents "will be irretrievably lost"...

  • Blank app icons?

I am guessing your iPod is jailbroken. Either way, try restarting the device, and if that doesnt work, try syncing with iTunes.

  • SharedPackageExtensions Blank App Icon

    Hi
After updating to iOS 8.1.2 a blank icon called SharedPackageExtensions has appeared on my home screen. If I click on it it opens to a black screen then immediately closes but still remains in my app switcher until I dismiss it.
Any idea what this is and how to get rid of it?
    Thanks.

If you are in your return with out any questions asked, try another one.  Take it back to the store and see what they have to say.
    Upgrade to the lastest ios.
It's a mystery to me too.

  • Blank App Icons on iPod after shutdown

    Hi everyone
A couple of days ago my iPod touch (3rd gen) ran out of battery and turned off. When I turned it back on a number of app icons appeared to be grey blank squares. I have tried turning it off and on, doing a hard restart (ie home and lock button held), I synchronised, I tried restoring from a back up where there wasnt an issue.
All of these attempts have left my problem unresolved. However, it seems deleting the app and redownloading it on my iPod brings the icon back, but there are a number of apps (30+) which this has happened to and I don't relish the idea of sitting down and doing this without knowing I have exhausted all options. Interestingly the apps in iTunes all have their icons and the app sync page also has the icon but the app in the iPod window in iTunes shows the same blank image which almost implies that there is a corruption in the backed up apps on my computer which has removed the iPod icon, but has left the iTunes icon.
Is anyone able to shed some light on to what has happened and what possible reason it could have happened for and maybe even a solution that can be found.
    Thanks,
    Ian

The same thing happened here I bought it using wifi and then once it had started downloading i had to leave and lost connection then when plugged it into my computer it started downloading again and finished but it wont sync and now it is a grey box that says waiting with an bar that is empty on my ipod... i tried deleting it but when the apps jiggle no cross comes up and i cant sync the app back in!
