Blank Thumbnail images

After installing iPhoto 6, I now have literally at least 100 photos that are blank.
There is an grey outline box with a drop shadow and a smaller outline box within the larger one. When I select the "blank" photo, all I get is the endless color wheel and eventually I have to "Force quit" iPhoto.
I could certainly use some help.
Thanks out there.
vivijohn.

m. I am sure this is because I deleted the pictures through the hard drive and not iphoto.
So the missing pics correspond exactly to the ones that you trashed via the Finder?
1. Try: Treat the blank thumbnails as pics and move them to the iPhoto trash and empty the trash. (The correct way to remove pics from the iPhoto Library Folder btw)
If that doesn't work then I'm afraid your only option is to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same film rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss

  • Blank thumbnail image previews after time machine restore

I recently used time machine to restore my system after replacing my mini's hard drive. I'm running 10.6.2 Since restoring I noticed that the finder's thumbnail image preview when clicking on a jpg or nef file is blank. I found another thread suggesting to move com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.QuickLookDaemon.plist (from ~/Library/Preferences) to the trash and restart my system. I tried this with no luck.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks,
    Mike

I installed the new (blank) hard drive, then started up the system with the SL install DVD. Then I chose restore from time machine as an option. It found my time machine disk without problem but before it could find my newly installed drive I had to go to disk utility and partition/erase. Once that was done it could see my new drive and I proceeded with the restore from time machine option.
When I open a finder and use grid view (I think that's the correct terminology), I can see thumbnails of the pictures. However, when I'm in column view (which is what I normally use) and select the file, when the rightmost column opens up giving file information, there is room at the top of the column where the preview would normally be, but the space is blank. Also, if I hit space bar the quicklook view is blank as well. I tried the menu->view option and the box to show icon previews is already checked. I will try the new user account approach and write back later.
    thanks

  • How do I set the thumbnail image of my videos that export to my computer?  I'm using Premiere Elements 11 on a windows 8.1 PC 64bit.

How do I set the thumbnail image of my videos that export to my computer?  I'm using Premiere Elements 11 on a windows 8.1 PC 64bit.
Or how does Premiere 11 determine where to set the image for the video it is exporting?
I already know how to use Freeze frame and save the image to my computer by Publish+Share/Computer/ Immage.
    Thanks,

This is not Adobe. Rather user to user. We are all visitors here.
Just a bit of history....back in the days of Premiere Elements 4, you could set a "poster frame" in what was called the Project area. You did this by right clicking a blank area there and, from the drop down menu that appeared, selecting View/Preview Area, and using the poster frame feature there.
As I said, when a video imports into Premiere Elements, the thumbnail of the import has been presenting as the first frame of the video. With this Preview area "poster frame" option, you could set the video's thumbnail in the Project area so that the first frame was another frame in the video. But, this "perk" was restricted to thumbnails of the video in Project area.
If you exported to file with the first frame modified video, the export's thumbnail in Windows Explorer would present with other than the real first frame or the poster frame as the first frame.
Also, in more recent versions, I have observed that the export to file does not display the real first frame of the video in Windows Explorer. Seems random, but I have not kept track.
And, remember, at the onset I wrote
As far as I have ever seen, Premiere Elements Windows uses the first frame of the video for its thumbnail in the program.
I know of no way within Premiere Elements to control what the program opts to do in this matter. In some compatibility
issues, it opts to give no image but a generic one.
I did not say that you can expect to have the Premiere Elements' export file's thumbnail in Windows displaying with its real first frame. And, the more you get into this, depending on the versions, more details need to be added to my comment about "...first frame of video for its thumbnail in the program..."
I would have to look into all this further to get perspective on the contributing factors.
    ATR
Add On...The Poster Frame feature appeared in versions 4, 7, 8, and 9 by my count.

  • Thumbnail images in the event browser

After about 20 minutes on FCPX the thumbnail images in the event browser randomaly disappear. If I move the scrubber bar over the blank thumbnail the image reappears but only for as long as I linger on the thumbnail. The audio track remains visible all the time. Changing the view or the scale doesn't help. It's difficult to find clips, as you can imagine. Anyone else having this problem?

Thanks Russ. After returning to original layout the problem subsided but returned after a longer time period (about two hours). I was just working (on a different project) and suddenly %90 of the thumbnails turned blue. I could still see the audio information but the pictures vanished. The picture returns when the scrubbing bar hovers over the thumbnail then disappears again when I take the bar away. This is incredibly frustrating. Could it be because I'm using a thunderboldt display off of my Mac Book Pro? Both are less than 1 year old and the Pro is (was) top of the line at the time. Blind as a bat.

  • Thumbnail Images in FCS

    Hi all,
I've been scratching my head (or more recently, beating it against my keyboard - fortunately they now make them in aluminium, good for the company's expenditure, bad for my head), trying to create some nice quality .jpg thumbnail stills through FCS. I just cannot seem to get them to come out the way I want them to, and I find the settings to be about as user-friendly as an alarm button, hidden behind bullet proof glass, with a sign saying "break glass to sound alarm".
    *What I want to achieve:*
I need to create thumbnail images of about 50,000 video clips. These need to go on our website, and should be .jpgs sized at 200x113. Also, the source (dv clips) should be cropped a few pixels, to eliminate that nice fuzzy dv edge. These should then end up on our site via FTP (this last bit, I reckon I can do).
*How I've been failing to do it*
I think it's something to do with the parameters I'm using. Here's what I've been doing thus far in Administration>Transcode Settings>New preset>Parameters:
Source Pixel Aspect Ration: Pal 16x9
Source Offset: 3/2 (is this cropping?)
    Source Image Size: -blank-
Destination Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square (HD)
    Image Size: 200/113
    Framce Size: -blank-
    Offset: -blank-
    Frame Number: 1
    Rotate/Flip: -off-
The images that are produced are, well, quite nasty little things that are the wrong shape and sized and uncropped. I've looked in the documentation and can't seem to find what the above parameters mean.
Any help and guidance would be very much appreciated.

  • Thumbnail images - how to

If you click on the link below to one of my website pages, you will notice how some of my News entries have thumbnail picture images by them. I just figured out how they are added and what I was doing wrong. What I need to do is to have someone tell me how to rectify the ones that don't have the thumbnail images.
    http://web.mac.com/dfreis/Freis/News/News.html
From what I have learned, you can either delete the picture page holder and drag your own photo in the space left blank, which results in a thumbnail of said picture NOT appearing as a thumbnail on your main archive page or leave the place holder image intact and then drag your picture on top of the image and the thumbnail of your pic WILL show up on the main page.
How do I get the pictures to show up as a thumbnail on the ones I did incorrectly the first time without having to redo the whole page from scrach?

  • Blank thumbnails in Iphoto mobileme gallery  after snow leopard upgrade

After upgrading to snow leopard, all the thumbnails for my different mobileme galleries are blank. iphoto 08. If I click on a blank thumbnail, I get a big ? I tried logging out and back in mobileme a few times, and also tried all the "rebuild" options when holding control & alt while opening Iphoto.
All the pics are there if I look online at the gallery.
    any ideas?

    Greetings,
Do the original images show up in the Photos and/or Events section of iPhoto or do they also give you an exclamation point?
Do you have a backup of your important data like Time Machine?
    You can try reseting iPhoto:
Ensure all your software is up to date (Apple Menu > Software Update).
Remove the following to the trash and restart the computer and try again:
Home > Library > Caches (I remove the whole folder. It will be re-generated upon restart.)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iPhoto (There may be more than one. Remove them all.)

When I go into system preferences and then Desktop & Screensaver I chose the pictures folder. It does not show any thumbnail images of any of the contents of my Pictures Folder, yet clicking on a blank area of space applies a desktop???? I have never seen this before anyone have any ideas?

There may be some minor issue or glitch in the system; and perhaps even
starting up in SafeBoot and using Disk Utility's repair disk permissions, then
quitting the utility, and restarting normally may help repair this situation.
    Some file types, in some cases, may not appear in icon or thumbnail view;
and there are a few image editor applications whose custom icon thumb-
nail views actually appear as a generic icon w/o an image; but an original
import from a camera will have the correct thumbnail captured by Finder
    and/or Preview (or iPhoto) by first-contact with the image from the camera;
but Photoshop or other third party shareware or freeware may not show one.
For a normal situation where a thumbnail image icon should be present:
Open up a finder window and do like this: from Finder=View=Show View Options
=Show Icon Preview. That will give you a thumbnail view of whatever document it is.
You can select to do this setting for all windows
Apparently your situation is different in that there may be a permissions or other
issue going on in the system; so try routine maintenance and also see if the images
are in the correct location for the system to see them. If the system is really messed
you may have to consider repairing it; try booting from the native disk utility in OS X
boot/installer disc, repair disk and repair disk permissions; then reboot using Startup
Disk in the boot disc's utilities menu (in installer menubar) and immediately press &
hold the Shift key on startup to engage SafeBoot; and re-repair disk permissions
from the System's hard drive located Disk Utility to re-correct these permissions, as
they will probably not be proper for the fully updated system running in the computer.
    Then restart normally.
There may be file damage, so if that is discovered through additional troubleshooting,
you may have to consider a new system folder, as in "Archive & Install" then update.
Repair disk permissions between all update & install steps of system and other software.
If you have and use a utility interface tool such as OnyX (runs free, is donationware) from
Titanium Software, download from their site; and run all the checkbox items in Automation,
and then restart the computer - or set its preferences to do that also, automatically - this
    may help general system health. It may not be able to fix something deeper in the system;
but a third party disk utility such as DiskWarrior or Drive Genius2 may help in other matters.
In some cases, depending on what images are involved and where they came from, be
they a chosen set of personal images you've directed the system to use as background
desktop images in Finder, or a set of Apple-supplied images, the results can be different.
I use a folder of camera created scenics as desktop backgrounds and use ToyViewer to
edit and rotate at a most basic level, since I try to make photos in the camera and not edit.
Sometimes, these will have generic non-image icons and not thumbnails; there is a way
to work around the issue should a whole folder of them go bad or change over w/o notice.
Hopefully someone who has fixed this problem will write a follow up; it is getting late in my
timezone and I am running on empty per this topic, among others... You may resort to an
Apple help or Apple Support documents search for a matching topic. That's a huge library.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Static thumbnail images not functioning (Encore 1.5.1)

I've been using Encore 1.5.1 (Build 42735) for many years now on this PC (AMD X2, Shuttle XPC P2500G), and have had no problems. However, in the last couple of weeks, the following symptom has developed...
My typical workflow is to encode M2V files using Premiere Pro 1.5.1, then import them as timelines into Encore 1.5.1. Once the timeline is created, I then set the chapter points, create menus, select video buttons, etc. Ultimately, I set thumbnail images for each video button using the "SET POSTER FRAME") option (based on frames from the M2V timeline), preview the project, then create a DVD image.
The Problem - When I try to "set poster frames" using timelines associated with M2V files, the image that appears in the menu editor's video button is severely distorted. (In some cases, the image is also upside down!) The image is corrupt when previewing the project and when the DVD is burned.
This only seems to happen when I use M2V files AND I make the buttom image static. In other words, if I check "Animate Buttons", the thumbnail image in the menu editor is corrupt, but previews and burns correctly. Also, if I use AVI files instead, everything works perfectly.
By the way, preview/playback of the actual M2V timeline works fine. It's almost as if Encore's menu editor is now having trouble interpreting the data from the M2V file.
As I stated before, I've been using M2V files in Encore since 2004 with no issues, and in the last few weeks this problem has begun. Has anyone out there encountered this problem? If so, what is causing it and is there a solution?
Thanks in advance for any help offered.

I've done some additional testing... But first a little background.
I have 2 PCs with almost identical software installed on them, including Premiere Pro 1.5.1 and Encore DVD 1.5.1. Although the hardware is different, I've configured these machines to be able to share any project I've EVER created. Any software installed on the first PC (built in 2003 - XP Home SP2) has been duplicated on the second PC (built in 2005 - XP Pro SP2). In fact, whenever I upgrade software on one machine, I always upgrade both to keep them in synch. Since 2005 I've been able to move projects back and forth between these two PCs with no problem whatsoever.
    Now the test...
I created a different five minute m2v file on each PC using the media encoder (v1.1) within Premiere Pro 1.5.1. (Remember, that's my normal workflow.)
I took the m2v file from the older (and still functioning correctly) PC, then used that file to create Encore projects on both PCs. I took the m2v file created on the newer (and currently not functioning correctly) PC and created Encore projects on both PCS.
That's a total of 4 Encore projects. For each project, I created a simple "blank 4X3 menu", and added a single video button. I linked the button to the 1 and only chapter on the timeline, then set the poster frame for the button.
    The results are as follows:
    1) It doesn't matter which computer creates the m2v - Any m2v can be copied to the old, functioning PC, and the Encore menu editor and the preview function displays perfectly.
    2) When using the Encore menu editor and preview features from the newer, problematic PC, single images (from m2v files created from either PC) set as poster frames are not interpreted properly. The image is displayed upside-down with a "mosaic" look to it.
    3) If I set the thumnail image of the button, check "Animate Buttons", then render the motion menus, the menu editor still displays the corrupted image, but the preview looks perfect.
    4) If I use AVI files instead, all these problems disappear.
Someone suggested this might be a codec problem, but if so, wouldn't the files not encode correctly as well? Remember, I can create the m2v on the "bad" computer, copy it to the "good" computer, and everything works fine.
It is true that (a month or so ago) I upgraded software on both machines - QuickTime 7.5.5 (which probably has some codecs) and Sonicfire Pro 5, which needs QT to run. Both sets of installs/upgrades went smoothly and the software on both PCs is working with no anomolies. Since the exact same versions are on both computers (with the old machine working perfectly), I'm having trouble buying the bad/rogue codec theory.
I could ignore this problem and just use AVI files. However, since AVI files are so much larger and take so long to back up to 4mm tape, I really don't see that as a long term solution.
Based on this information, does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks so much.

  • Import Images into slide show - Creating Thumbnail images -Hang

I am using iDVD 7. I imported my images into a slideshow. The pictures were not in iPhoto but just a folder that I created and edited in Photoshop. Once I import the images, the window shows all the file names as expected but all the Image Thumbnails are blank and the top of the window there is a message "+Creating thumbnail images... (32 remaining)+" with a spinning wheel next to the message. This message stays there forever. The 32 is the number of images in the slideshow. I can do most things in iDVD while this is going on, but I cannot add the audio I want.
What is causing this and can I get it to stop?

To add to this I decided to remove the slideshow and now import the pictures from iPhoto. I can only get ride of the message by closing iDVD down. When I relaunch iDVD the message is gone. When I now import the pictures from iPhoto the same thing happens where it hangs on creating thumbnail images.

  • Blank thumbnails

PhotoShop Elements 12, Organizer, on a Win 7 64-Bit:  My catalog has many blank thumbnails with question marks.  Why don't the photo thumbnails show?  There are actually 2 question marks on each one, one in the middle in a blue circle and one upper left corner in yellow square.  I've turned off the "find missing files" and don't want to have that.
    DdunnLytle

    Hi,
Personally, I would never delete the originals, certainly not without have a backup of them. As I learn more of how to use Photoshop, I have often gone back to an original photo and processed it again to finish with better images. That is all down to your personal prefference though.
From your description of your workflow, you seem to deleting the images from within the organizer so I'm not sure why you end up with missing files.
Is the thumbnail still in a stack? - there might be a small icon in the top right hand corner of the thumbnail and the maybe an expand/close marker on the right of the thumbnail.
If so expand the stack and one of the thumbnails may show.
If you edit a photo and save it in a version set, when you are happy with everything, you can right click on the thumbnail and select Version set -> Flatten Version Set and you get the option to delete all the versions except the top one. Is that how you do it?
Normally, there is only one copy of a photo stored on your disk. If you are looking at an album at a photo then it is the same file that you see when looking at All media. I'm not suggesting deleting anything at this stage until I can answer how you got the problem
By using File -> Reconnect -> All missing files, it will give you a list of all the entries in your catalog for which it cannot find the file. It is possible to then remove the entries from the catalog so that it gets tidied up. That might be a way of tidying up things. I would still like to work out how you got to that state.
Please let me know if the images are still stacked. Is it the unwanted images that have the double question marks?

  • IPhoto Library-only blank thumbnails??

Hopefully there is an easy solution to my problem. I wanted to create another (additional) Library. In the Help section, it told me to RENAME my current iPhoto library in the finder. I opened Pictures and renamed the folder.
Obviously that was my mistake, resulting in the "missing Library Images" When I now open iPhoto I get only blank thumbnails with titles.
Hope someone can guide me. Have approx 3500 images I would not want to lose.

When you launch iPhoto the library you last used will open. To switch, Option-launch and choose the other library. Same thing to switch back. There's no way to specify one or the other as the default, but you could remember to choose your preferred library when you finish working, so that it will open the next time you launch.
If you want to be able to transfer photos from one library to the other while preserving albums, keywords, etc. then look at iPhoto Library Manager. It is the only way to move items among separate libraries while preserving metadata. It adds the further convenience of enabling you to switch libraries quickly. I haven't used it personally, but it is highly regarded by other members of this forum. It could be just what you need.

  • HT204655 photos loaded but appearing as blank thumbnails

I've just migrated a large amount of photos to the Photos programme, but many of them don't appear in thumbnail view - instead, the thumbnail is blank. If I double click on the blank thumbnail, the photo appears, and then the thumbnail appears, but otherwise, the majority of my library appears as blanks.
    Any advice?

I take it you just can't do another delete on those blank thumbnails, right?
Try rebuilding the library using iPhoto Library Manager. It creates a new library while leaving the old one untouched. It has often worked when iPhoto's rebuild did not. Here's how:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: It can take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. One user reported that with a library of about 5,000 images it took about 12 hours so plan ahead.
    Good luck.
