Blank Thumbnails in Library

In the Library in iPhoto I have many blank thumbnails. It is not possible to select one of these blanks and then see it, the spinning wheel turns grey, it all runs very slow and I then force quit the application. It is possible to select the blanks and then delete them. However, any operation with them takes forever. I have tried to rebuild the library using the hold-down of the apple and option kexs when launching iPhoto but the problem is still there.
Can any body please suggest what to do? Are the blanks actual photos, or just a 'ghost' in the machine?

Paul,
If your database is corrupted, then you do lose the albums, keywords, and other iPhoto metadata. You said you tried the option-command-launch rebuild, but that was before manually deleting those zero kb jpeg files. You could try the auto rebuild again, but I'd guess the chances of it helping are slim.
One final thing to try before starting a new library is to download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. It uses a different file to restore the library than the iPhoto rebuild, and can sometimes restore a library when iPhoto cannot. It's another slim chance, but may be worth the effort if it goes well. If it fails, it won't make anything worse. Plus, the iPLM Help gives good descriptions of how iPhoto works and may shed light on what happened to your library. I learned a lot just by reading their information.
And no, I can't explain the thousands of zero kb jpeg files in your library. Had you copied the library folder over to another drive and back? Did your hard drive get low on disk space? Prior to this trouble, had you ever used the Finder to change or delete the files inside your iPhoto Library folder? You could see if your hard disc needs repairs with Disk Utility. If it comes up with a long list of errors that would be a clue. You would be wise to repair the disk (in that case) before trying to repair your iPhoto library.
Regards.

  • Blank thumbnails even after library repairing

Photos works flawlessly on my 2013 MacBook Pro but doesn't work on my 2009 iMac 27". All the thumbnails remain blank after multiple library repairing and restarting (app and computer). I used the Option + Command + App Launching to access the library repairing function. What else can I do?

If you rebuild does not work you might try moving the contents of the Data folder to the trash and the rebuild again with the first three options. That will force creation of new thumbnail files. Another way that will work when the normal rebuild does not is to use iPhoto LIbrary Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. One user reported that with a library of about 5,000 images it took about 12 hours so plan ahead.
Yes, putting the library on an external HD with the ownership turned off is the best way to share a library.

  • IPhoto Library-only blank thumbnails??

Hopefully there is an easy solution to my problem. I wanted to create another (additional) Library. In the Help section, it told me to RENAME my current iPhoto library in the finder. I opened Pictures and renamed the folder.
Obviously that was my mistake, resulting in the "missing Library Images" When I now open iPhoto I get only blank thumbnails with titles.
Hope someone can guide me. Have approx 3500 images I would not want to lose.

When you launch iPhoto the library you last used will open. To switch, Option-launch and choose the other library. Same thing to switch back. There's no way to specify one or the other as the default, but you could remember to choose your preferred library when you finish working, so that it will open the next time you launch.
If you want to be able to transfer photos from one library to the other while preserving albums, keywords, etc. then look at iPhoto Library Manager. It is the only way to move items among separate libraries while preserving metadata. It adds the further convenience of enabling you to switch libraries quickly. I haven't used it personally, but it is highly regarded by other members of this forum. It could be just what you need.

  • Blank thumbnails in Iphoto mobileme gallery  after snow leopard upgrade

After upgrading to snow leopard, all the thumbnails for my different mobileme galleries are blank. iphoto 08. If I click on a blank thumbnail, I get a big ? I tried logging out and back in mobileme a few times, and also tried all the "rebuild" options when holding control & alt while opening Iphoto.

    Greetings,
Do the original images show up in the Photos and/or Events section of iPhoto or do they also give you an exclamation point?
Do you have a backup of your important data like Time Machine?
    You can try reseting iPhoto:
Ensure all your software is up to date (Apple Menu > Software Update).
Remove the following to the trash and restart the computer and try again:
Home > Library > Caches (I remove the whole folder. It will be re-generated upon restart.)
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iPhoto (There may be more than one. Remove them all.)

  • Blank Thumbnail images

After installing iPhoto 6, I now have literally at least 100 photos that are blank.
There is an grey outline box with a drop shadow and a smaller outline box within the larger one. When I select the "blank" photo, all I get is the endless color wheel and eventually I have to "Force quit" iPhoto.
I could certainly use some help.
    Thanks out there.
    vivijohn.

    m. I am sure this is because I deleted the pictures through the hard drive and not iphoto.
So the missing pics correspond exactly to the ones that you trashed via the Finder?
    1. Try: Treat the blank thumbnails as pics and move them to the iPhoto trash and empty the trash. (The correct way to remove pics from the iPhoto Library Folder btw)
If that doesn't work then I'm afraid your only option is to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same film rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss

  • How to rebuild previews (thumbnails) in library (lightroom 1.0)?

After installing the back-up file of my Lightroom-library, the previews (thumbnails) of pictures in my library became 'blank'.
The settings of the pictures are still intact, but the previews of the photo's are gone. Does anybody know how I can rebuild the previews?

Normally, the thumbnails should be rendered automatically. You can force the preview rendering process by choosing Render Standard-sized or Render 1:1 Previews from Library menu. However, before running either of these commands you will want to delete the file with named  Lightroom Previews.lrdata
Above assumes that nothing untoward has happened since you created the backup Library. Do you see a ? badge on the top right corner of thumbnails? If yes then the blank thumbnails will be due to the catalog pointing at photos that it can no longer locate. Not being able to locate the photos will likely be as a result of you moving them since the backup Library was created. If this is the case you will need to relink the photos to the backup Library
You'll also want to update to Lightroom 1.4.1

  • Blank thumbnails, no photos

I don't know if Spyder Pro Calibration Software did anything to my computer but after an error with Spyder installing, I tried to get into LR to upload some photos. In Library I see catalog with number of photos but only blank thumbnails in view screen. If I click on one of them, nothing happens. I tried to access photos from computer LR backup folder, date shows of backups but they are blank.
Any idea on how to get my photos back?

If your photos are truly gone, it's unlikely that your Spyder calibration deleted 100s or 1000s of files. If you mean you just can't see them in LR, but they are actually on your HD--right-click Show in Explorer, then sure, redo your monitor profile, or switch back to the previous profile named something like sRGB.

  • Some photos in iphoto are missing and there are blank thumbnails which when i try to open them show an exclamation sign

some photos in iphoto are missing and there are blank thumbnails which when i try to open them show an exclamation sign

The exclamation make is an indication that iPhoto has broken the file path to the original photo.
Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Blank Thumbnails, iPhoto hangs.

    Hi,
Suddenly a lot of my thumbnails went blank. Looking at info, the file has it´s original size, but looking in Finder reveals that the file is 0kb and the symbol in Finder is gray and has the text "exec" in green printed on it.
My db is not larger than 4GB (4000 photos). Of course these strange pictures that won´t open have overwritten my backup...... When clicking on one of these blank thumbnails, iPhoto hangs....
I have installed Iphoto Library Manager and tried to rebuild the library, but what happens is that the new lib won´t import the pictures with the blank thumbnails (explanation being that the file format is not recognized or that the file does not contain valid data. When trying to delete one of these files though iPhoto, i get the message that it is not possible since the file is being used...
Please get back to me with some recommendation.

    Hi again,
Ran Disk Utility (booted from Tiger disks) and have done disk repair as well as permission repair. I have had no sucess so far...
When I backup or export the library files and photo has 0kb size, whereas the photo (command+I) shows the right file size at my Ibook.

  • Recently updated to iphoto 9.2, I have blank thumbnail previews.

I have recently updated to iPhoto 9.2 (626), my most recent imported pictures have blank thumbnails. I have tried to rebuild the thumbnails, and have tried to import new photos with multiple settings on the camera and nothing seems to be the fix.
    I am running OSX 10.6.8
Thank you in advance for the help.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • HT204655 photos loaded but appearing as blank thumbnails

I've just migrated a large amount of photos to the Photos programme, but many of them don't appear in thumbnail view - instead, the thumbnail is blank. If I double click on the blank thumbnail, the photo appears, and then the thumbnail appears, but otherwise, the majority of my library appears as blanks.
    Any advice?

I take it you just can't do another delete on those blank thumbnails, right?
Try rebuilding the library using iPhoto Library Manager. It creates a new library while leaving the old one untouched. It has often worked when iPhoto's rebuild did not. Here's how:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: It can take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. One user reported that with a library of about 5,000 images it took about 12 hours so plan ahead.
    Good luck.

  • Blank thumbnails from iPhone

Using iTunes will all current updates. same for the iPhone.
    iPhoto shows the contents of the iPhone as blank thumbnails but does show the image numbers. What I've tried;
    1. restart iPhone, restart iPhoto.
    2. search for pictures in the iPhotoLibrary (show package contents) thinking they are really there but they are not.
    3. Rebuilt the iPhoto library.
I am out of ideas. I suppose it is possible that the issue is an iPhone issue. iTunes has been backing up the iPhone as expected, so I could reset the iPhone, but I don't want to do that until I am sure I have the pictures.
I don't know how to look at the iPhone to see what's there. I don't know if it's even possible. This iPhone is not jailbroken.
    Ideas?

    Hello Suzie,
If I'm understanding correctly from your description these are images that are on the iPhone and being offered as import options (Which is what you see when you plug in an iPhone with iPhoto open because iPhoto considers the iPhone a camera).
    Lets do a test:
1.) Hold down the option key and launch iPhoto
2.) Create a new blank iPhoto Library
3.) Do you see your iPhone with blank thumbnails?
If you do this sounds like an issue with the iPhone (the best way to test that I can think of would be to plug another camera into your computer and see what happens).
If you take a new picture with the iPhone do you still get a blank thumbnail?
If you do with new pictures as well there may be something wrong with the location on the iPhone that pictures are stored. Consider doing a restore of the iPhone http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If you don't see the thumbnails with the new library then the issue is with your original iPhoto Library. Switch back to your original library using the option key and then follow http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2638. Use the "Repair Permissions" option, allow it to complete and then "Rebuild iPhoto Library Database..." option. If that does not resolve the issue then rebuild the thumbnails (both options).
    Hope that helps.

  • Blank thumbnail photos on ipad

    Blank thumbnail photos on ipad

Ah, maybe you were referring to the original suggestion of closing apps.  Here was what I found worked:
settings/general/date & time/ set automatically (turn off)/ set time zone (select a city in my time zone)/Wi-Fi (turn off wifi)/ Cellular Data (turn off cellular data)/hold power button down until Ipad shuts off/hold power button down until Ipad turns back on/Settings/ turn back on WiFi and Cellular Data.
This fixed it for me, then after updating the apps I went back in and set the clock to auto.

  • Blank thumbnails

PhotoShop Elements 12, Organizer, on a Win 7 64-Bit:  My catalog has many blank thumbnails with question marks.  Why don't the photo thumbnails show?  There are actually 2 question marks on each one, one in the middle in a blue circle and one upper left corner in yellow square.  I've turned off the "find missing files" and don't want to have that.
    DdunnLytle

    Hi,
Personally, I would never delete the originals, certainly not without have a backup of them. As I learn more of how to use Photoshop, I have often gone back to an original photo and processed it again to finish with better images. That is all down to your personal prefference though.
From your description of your workflow, you seem to deleting the images from within the organizer so I'm not sure why you end up with missing files.
Is the thumbnail still in a stack? - there might be a small icon in the top right hand corner of the thumbnail and the maybe an expand/close marker on the right of the thumbnail.
If so expand the stack and one of the thumbnails may show.
If you edit a photo and save it in a version set, when you are happy with everything, you can right click on the thumbnail and select Version set -> Flatten Version Set and you get the option to delete all the versions except the top one. Is that how you do it?
Normally, there is only one copy of a photo stored on your disk. If you are looking at an album at a photo then it is the same file that you see when looking at All media. I'm not suggesting deleting anything at this stage until I can answer how you got the problem
By using File -> Reconnect -> All missing files, it will give you a list of all the entries in your catalog for which it cannot find the file. It is possible to then remove the entries from the catalog so that it gets tidied up. That might be a way of tidying up things. I would still like to work out how you got to that state.
Please let me know if the images are still stacked. Is it the unwanted images that have the double question marks?
    Brian
