Blank white band across bottom of screen

Sometimes when I turn on my new MacBook there is a thick (more than 1" wide) blank, white band across the bottom of the screen, and the rest of the screen display is squeezed (elongated) into the remaining space. If I then put the MacBook to sleep and wake it up, the screen returns to normal.
Any idea what is going on? And what I should do?
It occurs to me that my MacBook might be "confused" because I sometimes use it with an external monitor and sometimes I don't..... Coudl that be the explanation?

I am still having this problem. It especially occurs when I am not connected to my external monitor and running off the battery. Has nobody else had this problem? Does anybody know what the problem is?

Horizontal band across bottom of screen 2 inches

Hey guys,
I was trying to fix my bros old powerbook g4 so that i could use it. Everything works, except the bottom two inches of the display is not working. Its usually grayish, but if i shake the screen or hit it, it will change and look like what its supposed to. Even if i shake it, the gray just goes away, if i try moving my mouse down there it disappears, and if i open an application, the bottom part doesnt get updated, it just stays the way it was unless i hit it again. For a few days i got it to work at a certain angle, but now its back to its normal self. Is it a loose connection, or a software problem, or what?
Please give me suggestions.

IMac Display -- White band across screen

I recently noticed a white band across the top half of my screen. The line is about 3-5 tall and runs the entire width of the screen. This is incredibly annoying. The so-called Genius at the Apple store said I would have to pay about $800 to replace the display, which is ridiculous. It is time that Apple match product quality with design quality or fix these problems.

I have the same issue.. although it isn't terribly noticeable yet... It has crept up using this computer for a month. The computer has only been in use for 1-1/2 months. I have multiple band running width wise down the entire screen.

Large Grey Band at Bottom of Screen when I do a full monitor view on Photoshop. It doesn't always happen. Been using PS for more then a decade and never seen this problem.

White line across MBP 17" screen

This just stareted happening, and it's getting worse...
From time to time, a thin white line goes across my entire screen, followed by the entire screen below becoming darker than the top part. Also, there are times when the affected part becomes a cascade of thin white lines.
It goes away when I flex the screen, or slightly tap the screen.
I'm taking it to the Apple Store, but I wondere if anyone else has experienced this?

What white line?? If it goes all the way across you probably have a row of pixels out. I had mine for 3 months when this happened. I had purchased mine from Best Buy with a service plan, and chose to have mine repaired rather than get a "refurbished" replacement. I received a phone call this morning saying that Apple had authorized an exchange for a new ipod, which has just finished synching. Not sure what the qualifications are for getting a brand new replacement like that are, but I think I'll always choose the repair option over exchange - I just lost 3 months wear and tear on my ipod.

Grey fuzzy band across the ipad screen.

Turned on the ipad after long period of inactivity to find a grey fuzzy band across the screen. Anyone know why and how to fix it?
Its an ipad 2 and the band is about 1.5 inches wide and doesn't move up or down the screen.

I have a irregular dark band across the top of July 2005 20" iMac display. It looks like thick dust - behind the display. I suspect it's some kind of LCD delamination.
I have a picture of it on a blog post, but Apple doesn't allow personal URLs in posts. I've seen images in forum posts, but I don't know how to do that!
Anyone know the cause and outlook? I'm betting I will have to live with it until it gets worse -- any repair is likely to be pretty darned expensive (no AppleCare). I'm disappointed to have the display dying after about 2.5 years of life -- I expected more.

I've gotten a comment on my blog from someone with a similar problem. I suspect it's delamination of the LCD panel probably related to the well known heat issues of the G5 iMac line (Hot hot chip, small space).
I haven't contacted Apple because I don't have Apple Care on the machine and it's out of warranty. (I get an extra year through my AmEx card, so I had two years of coverage. The extra year from the card is why I don't buy Apple Care.)
I would call them if the problem were more common, since then there would be a (small) chance of some kind of extended warranty problem, but I haven't really seen that many complaints. It's probably a bit unlucky to get it.
If it doesn't get worse I'll just ignore it, but if it does worsen I'll probably buy a second display (if the iMac supported extended desktop I'd already have the second display) and making it a children's machine.

20 inch G5 iMac displaying 1/4 inch blotchy line across bottom of screen

I just noticed a 1/4 inch thick blotchy, somewhat transparent line near the bottom of my screen. A year ago, right after I purchased this computer, I had to have some things replaced because of a thick white line that appeared across the bottom. Is this more of the same?

This was endemic on the Rev. A 20" models. I had my screen replaced twice. After the PS, mid-plane and mid-plane went again they sent me a new one with a built in iSight. I suggest you call Apple Care to have them repair it.

ThinkPad T400 horizontal line across bottom of screen

Hello. I'm running Windows 7. A horizontal, flickering band has appeared along the bottom edge of the screen. When it is flickering I see what looks the top of the screen or window. When it settles down, there is just a thin line across the taskbar icons. This happened after I had been playing a computer game, although I doubt that has any bearing. I replaced the LCD assembly 7 months ago because I was having a problem with full-screen flashing/blinking, and the new LCD had no problems. I have tried changing a BIOS settings (enabling/disabling VT-d) but that made no difference. The line is there from the moment of boot-up whenever the screen is on. Do I have a chip going bad? I don't have an external monitor to test this with.

there is no real easy of testing it once you have done the basic diagnostic.

Internet browser problems (white block at bottom of screen)

Hi,
Recently I have been unable to properly use the internet on my BlackBerry Curve. Over a quarter of the screen at the bottom when I go on the internet is white so I can't scroll down so it's unusable. I've noticed although it is accessing the internet the little blue loading to the intenet bar when a page is loading is no longer showing at the top of the screen too. If I search for something like a restaurant or something on Google for example, the first restaurant will show in the list but because of the white block and no scroll down bar I can't look at anything else. It's very weird. Can anyone advise me as to what might be happening, I'd really appreciate it.

The dock can be described as a translucent cloudy bar going across the bottom of the iPad and depending upon what your wallpaper is, that could fit your description to a "T". But if this is not the dock bar that you're describing, try a reset.
Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears on the screen.

Trouble importing video - blurred band across bottom of footage

I am in the process of importing footage captured by a Sony DV Handycam into iMovie HD. On the screen, a blurred out band appears at the bottom of each clip. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the band is the footage that should appear at the top of the clip. How do I fix this? Thanks!

That's a very strange problem, one that I don't recall anyone ever mentioning here.
Several things are possible, I suppose:
1. The video wasn't recorded properly on the tape in the camera;
2. The video is messed up as it is imported from the camera to iMovie.
3. There's a tape problem. The tape is bad, or the tape heads aren't properly recording to the tape.
Of those, I'd rule out #1 first.
You said the video was "captured by a Sony DV Handycam". Are you saying the video was NOT shot by the camera? Was it transferred from a VHS tape to the camera, for example? Or did you use a passthrough feature to transfer a VHS tape to iMovie? Was there some other source?
If so, the defect may have been introduced before the video was sent to iMovie. I recall seeing that defect when playing tapes on a VCR, for example. A narrow band of video from the TOP of the image would play at the BOTTOM. It could occur when the tape was played in a VCR that did not record the tape. Or if the VCR heads needed adjusting/cleaning. Or of the VCR was shot.
So as you play the video on the camera's LCD screen, can you see the defect there too? (I know, it might be hard to see, but it might be there.)
Except for using third-party iMovie plug-ins, as far as I know there is no way to trim off the bottom of the image in iMovie. It's possible to do it in QuickTime Pro, however. It requires exporting the iMovie Timeline to a Full Quality movie, adding a mask to the movie that trims off the image you don't want included, then exporting it to a NEW movie that you import to iMovie. Because iMovie wants video with a 4:3 aspect ratio, it would probably be necessary to mask off all four sides. You'd lose stuff.
Masking gets a bit complicated, so a better solution is to eliminate the problem at its source if you can.
It may be possible to simply ignore the problem. If your goal is to burn a DVD of this video, note that the image played from the DVD (always) includes a TV Safe Area. Everything OUTSIDE the TV Safe Area can't be seen on a traditional TV. (A traditional TV never shows us the entire image.) If your band is outside the TV Safe Area, it won't be seen. It WILL be seen on a modern HD TV, however, and on any QuickTime movies you create from the iMovie project.
To check out whether the band plays in the TV Safe Area, create an iDVD project of your iMovie project and turn on the TV Safe Area display. Better yet, burn the DVD and see how it plays on your TV. The size of the TV Safe Area varies from TV to TV, so we can't rely entirely on what we see in iDVD.

Yellow Band Across Bottom after use

Last night, after a full days use, I noticed a yellow band at the bottom of the screen. It shocked me as it had not been there before. I turned it off, and this morning, I don't see it. I am worried that it will come back. Anyone seen this on your phones and did you find out what is causing it and what to do about it?

Ok, so my sister was adjusting the preferences on my macbook (for reasons unknown) and im not sure what she did exactly (neither does she), but now theres a white bar at the bottom of the screen where the dock is. if anyone can help me out, id really appreciate it...Thanks

Line across bottom of screen

my son's 3 week old macbook pro has a line across the bottom of the screen. He has not dropped or misused the computer. It has been sitting on the counter all week because my son went away to camp. It was working fine Saturday morning. Started last night.

This is a user to user forum. Contact the store you bought it at immediately and see if they will exchange it. You are right at the end of many stores exchange period. Otherwise contact Applecare. It sounds like a common LCD inverter cable or board problem.
