Blend/soft/feather edge

I have a color background in the bottom third for text. I want to make the top part of that color blend/feather/dissolve into the image underneath so it is not so harsh of a contrast. I have tried a variety of matte things, but I cannot crack it. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Couple of ways:
1) Draw a mask over the background and feather the mask.
2) Create a black to white gradient and use it as an image mask on the background. You can either create a shape and fill it with a gradient, or use the gradient generator.

  • Photoshop CS6 Soft Brush edge appears grainy

i hav been using PS cs6 for the last 1 month n hav never encountered any problems or errors, but today when i started to paint a problem for Soft Brushes is appearing..
it works fine for hard brushes, but when i switch to soft brush the edge of the soft brush appears grainy.. i hav reinstalled the software, but doesn't work...
i m using the same setting for CS5 and it works fine in PS cs5, don't know why suddenly this problem occured. (sys. config.: Win7 64bit, 1gb NVIDIA graphics card, 6GB ram, core i3 processor)

Look at your blending mode setting that is what doing it.....Its dissolving right before your eyes....

  • Blending only one edge of a cutout? Not linear

I've cut a person out of a photo, but the edges of the persons hair looks a bit weird. (See below)
I wanted to use something like the Refine Edge/Feather tool to blend it into the background to look more realistic, but that applies to all sides of the selection.
How should I go about blending the edges of the persons hair without compromising other parts of the image?

I did delete the background by selecting it and clicking delete.  I didnt use the layer mask but the video link showed me how to correctly use the Refine Edge tool and I've been able to get a result:

  • How to feather edge in image?

First I used a marquee selection tool to draw around the image.  Then I went to Select>Feather and did what I had to do.  But nothing happened.  I even followed Adobe Help's instructions but nothing happened.  I use PSE8.  Thanks.

If you just feather, all you've done is feather the edges of the selection, so you won't see any difference. Copy/paste your selection into a new file, or do Select>Inverse, and then press backspace/delete to see the edge.

  • How do I get a three-way colour blend (and rounded edge effect)?

For what it's worth I'm using Illustrator CS5 but I imagine any solution will apply to all recent versions.
In practice I've pretty much got where I need to so this isn't an immediate problem, but I'm sure there are much better ways of achieving the effect and I'd like to have them in stock for future reference. I'm not sure if this is a basic matter that I should be able to figure out easily or a challenge for more advanced practitioners; either way, I'd be grateful for any suggestions.
The end product I was after - sort of - is shown here:
The two elements I struggled with were:
Blending the colours where they join - particularly the three-way blend at the middle, which in the end I avoided by placing another object on top! I resorted to a manual, tedious and inaccurate point-by-point approach using meshes and it didn't really deliver what I wanted, which was a seamless join between the colours.
Getting the effect of a rounded edge at the perimeter of the triangle - I used the same mesh-and-guesswork technique (and it shows).
In whatever solution anyone can suggest, one of the important things is to be able to dictate the distance over which the blend and shading operate, both where the colours merge and at the rounded edges. Feel free, by the way, to start from the very beginning with "First, construct your triangle" - I realised, as I did this, that there are a many different ways to do that, and one may be better than another for a particular blending approach.
    Thanks for your thoughts,
    Giles.

    1. Polygon Tool: ShiftDrag to draw a triangle oriented with one of its corners at the top.
    2. Apply a linear grad fill, blue to white, -90°
    3. Appearance palette: Add New Fill. Linear grad, red to white, 30°
    4. Appearance palette: Add New Fill. Linear grad, green to white, 150°
5 Appearance palette: Select each fill. Set its Transparency Mode to Exclusion.
    6.Deselect. Select the path. Effect>Distort>RoundedCorners.

  • Feather edge of blur?

Essentially I'm doing the same effect as you would use to blur a face; adjustment layer-mask-guassian blur. However, I can't figure out how I would go about feathering the edges of the blur. Instead of having a box with very clear cut edges where the blur/mask ends, I'd like to feather the edges and have the blur fade into the rest of the comp.

Don't know if you got this solved, but I think I know what you mean.
What you want to do is push up the mask expansion, so that you're mask is bigger than what you actually intend it to be, then feather it by the same number of pixels that you have expanded it. This ensure that the feather only lies on the outside of the mask shape. So you'll have your Gaussian Blur at a 100% opacity within the bounds of your mask, but that will start to fade outside the mask boundaries.

  • New User, Image in Preview AND DVD is soft/fuzzy edged.

I have some recorded sreen clips, which were saved as AVI, they are slightly poorer quality than the original, but once run through Elements 9 they get a fuzzy out of focus look to them. Is this to be expected? I have only set the burn settings to the highest HD  whether in PAL or NTSC, other than that I have made no alterations.

What did you use to record, and what codec is inside that AVI file?

  • Refine Edge - Feather  gives stepped and ragged result

Not sure if this has been answered, I can't find anything similar here.
CS2 used to have Select -> Feather and it worked great!
Now, in CS3 we have Select -> Refine Edge and it goes wrong almost as soon as I start moving the Feather slider. When I hit 250 (max) the resulting "Feather" has several extremely uneven and very visible steps in the blend. I usually have to go back and blur the result several times until the steps go away.
Anyone else have this problem? Is there a better way to smooth selections before deleting, filling, coloring, blending, etc
    Thanks,
    Pete

Most images are 8 bit. Scanner is 24 bit. The banding I mention happens with both.
Generally, I select a small area. For instance, my scanner leaves a slightly darker 1/4" strip at the left edge. A slight light fall off in that 1/4" strip down the left side.
I used to make a very narrow selection from top to bottom, at the farthest left I could go. Maybe 1/16" wide, and then feather it greatly. Then I can adjust it lighter and it used to work perfectly. Now with feather edge, I get huge banding.
Also, when feathering a layer, such as a black vignette around the edge of a photo, pushing the feather edge too high up causes extremely noticeable banding.
Why does the feather edge slider go up to 250 if banding is noticeable at 30 or 50?
I need this feature to blend layers and transitions for web design all the time and it always causes huge problems with banding.
Select -> Modify -> feather radius is very difficult to preview results. The Refine Edge preview is great, but the banding is not so great! It happens every time I use it.
To my way of thinking, selection edge feathering is selection edge feathering, no?
    Thanks

  • How to Create a consistent Gradient w/ Soft Edge & Filter

Hello, Im using photoshop 6, and Im trying to apply an effect for a banner photo, that will be consistent for other banner photos of the same size.
I've attached a photo of this.
As you can see the gradient (which contains the text) starts with a grey color then transitions to white. The right edge that meets the blue sky isnt a hard edge but rather a soft edge.
Im not sure how to create that soft edge. Someone else had mentioned to use the gradient with colors from grey to white then to transparent to create that soft right edge.  Im not sure how to set that up.
I used a brush in this case, and as you can see, the line is uneven.
Also I believe the Filter used here is Ripple or Ocean Ripple.
I was hoping if someone could walk me through what the correct steps would be to create that effect, so that I can use this consistently for several photos

Oh, I see, PS 6. The parts here about Fill Layers and Layer Styles won't apply, but the editing method is the same:
First, open the Gradient Editor by clicking on the Gradient in the Option Bar or the dialog for a Gradient Fill Layer:
Set up a Gray-to-White Gradient, and add a transparent stop just pas the White stop:
Enter a name, and click on "New" to save it. You can also save as part of a Layer Style with Gradient Overlay.

  • Is there a way to use eraser tool with soft edges?

    Hi,
I am wanting to erase the edges of a rectangular object so that it blends better with the background, and am wondering if there is a way of doing this using the eraser tool with soft edges?
Here is a snapshot to illustrate further what I mean:
You should be able to see that above the curve on the left there is a gradient which extends to the top of the image. This is the rectangle which I have applied a gradient to. At the top of the rectangle the colour is the same as the background. What I am trying to do is to blend the left edge of the rectangle in with the background above the curve (below the curve there is a line so no blending is needed). The way I thought of doing this is using the eraser tool with a soft edge. I can do this in Photoshop, but I'm not sure if this is possible or the best approach in Illustrator.
I would be grateful for any advice on this,
    Thanks,
    Nick

I don't really understand yoru end goal. However, the answer to yoru Eraser Tool question is no. There is no such thing as a "soft edge" for the eraser tool.
The ways to blend objects in specific areas only would be:
    Gradients with transparent stop
    Gradient mesh with transparency nodes
    Opacity masks
Fake it by blending to the same color as the background.

  • New iPad outer edge contour

Does the new iPad have a softer top edge contour? It appears so from photos. Ipad2 has a sharp top edge that is annoying if you hold it for long periods.

I think they just showed it to th audience, but didn't pass it around. Some reviewers, developers, and 3rd party peripheral manufacturers might have them, but undoubtedly under NDAs. Reviews will probably come put next Wednesday or Thursday.

  • Able to make local adjustment on video ?

When I shot video about academic presentation, the PowerPoint graphic on projector screen was easily washed out while the speaker exposure was correct.
In Photoshop Elements, I can select and copy the screen area as layer, then adjust the brightness, contrast and level to make the graphic content readable.
Can I do the same thing on APE 12 ?  I tried to adjust the video footage but any adjustment applies to whole clips.  When the screen content is readable, the speakers is too dark.  Just wondering if I have the local adjustment options.
    Thanks.

From what you wrote, I am wondering if you have any version of Premiere Elements at this time. And, what computer operating system is involved?
There are effects in Premiere Elements that can be applied related to Auto Levels, Brightness, Contrast, Shadow/Highlight, Hue, and Saturation, Lighting. You can apply these effects to the whole clip or, for some, keyframe its property so that the effect varies across the duration of the video. But, for selectively correcting a specific area in a frame, you would need to do some exploration and experimentation with the what is. There is an Effects Mask to localize an effect, but how effectively you can deal with blending that into the rest of the frame is questionable and depends on what you are trying to correct. My blog post of Effects Mask is found
    http://www.atr935.blogspot.com/2013/07/pe-about-effects-mask.html
and includes how I applied more than one Effect Mask to an image.
There is also a Track Matte Effect that may or may not be used for your purposes. The Feather Edge effect is not as effective as in Photoshop Elements Feather.
Where you might gain some advantage is the instance where you can create a freeze frame in the video and then apply selectively effects in Photoshop Elements before transferring the freeze frame back as an insert into Premiere Element Timeline content.
Basically you need to distinguish between those effects that can be varied across the duration of the video versus those effects which can be applied to a specific area of the frame. I believe the latter is what you seek.
    Please review and consider.
    Thank you.

  • Want to make trickey 'wipe' effect

    Flash CS3:
I would like to make a series of horizontal images change
like a slide show but using the effect that I believe is called a
'wipe' like a slow windshield wiper motion but with a soft
feathered edge; Like one image being 'brushed' away with the soft
edge to show the next image below it. I'd like to repeat this for
    three or more images.
I don't want the image to move or pull away, just the feather
edge scrolling across the image leaving the alpha zero behind as
the first image is wiped cleanly away.
I hope I explained that correctly. Can you help me think of a
way to accomplish this in Flash?
    TIA,
    Ken

    Hello there!
In the tutorial for How to Add a Dramatic Blur, the tutorial outlines that you have to make a selection with the Scribble Selection tool. Can you perhaps post a screenshot of the selection you made, then what happens when you try to "refine the selection"?

  • Keylight Green Screen - Noise on Talent

We have some footage of a gent standing in front of a green screen, which was lit by a pro.
I used Keylight in AE to superimpose the man over some stock footage.
The edges don't look bad, but the man is wearing a dark suit, which has a lot of noise in it. How can I minimize this? (Reshooting is not an option.)
Since I am a novice, I am including a screen shot, which includes my Keylight settings.
The below still doesn't look completely horrible, but during playback, the noise is obvious and distracting.

One way to solve this is by first creating an interior mask...
1.)  Draw a mask that surrounds the character with just the edges left showing.  Then animate the mask path to follow the character for the duration of the shot.  The mask doesn't have to be perfect it just has to stay within the edges of the character.
2.)  Then duplicate the mask to create an exterior mask...
a.)  Copy and paste the first layer with the animated mask on it so it's above the original layer.
b.)  Change the bottom mask so it's inverted.
c.)  Then apply the Keylight effect to the bottom layer so it's only effecting the information between the edge and the green screen.
d.)  Then change the Keylight effect settings until you have a good key.
e.)  The exterior edge may turn a slightly different color than the interior character so you may have to play with the mask expansion and feather settings on both layers in order to blend the exterior edge with the interior.
Finally, a blur effect could be added to the exterior keyed layer to soften any noise around the edges

  • Aperture 3, Border Fx after upgrade to MacOS X 10.9.2

Are there any Aperture users out there who also use the plug in Border Fx?  If you, have you noticed any changes in using Border Fx after upgrading to OS X 10.9.2?  After I upgraded to 10.9.2, I've noticed the presets I had in Border Fx gave different results. In addition it appears that the plug-in is behaving differently and I can't reproduce borders I once used.  I've written to the maker of Border Fx and will report any findings here.  I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced this behavior.
    Ed

Ok, I'll try to see if I can explain a little of what I see.  Here is a picture exported from Aperture using the Border Fx plug-in.  The date of the export is Feb 25.  Note that there is a white border around the image, although it might be hard to see here, but with a soft inner edge to the border
I updated to Mas OS X on Feb 26.  Here's another picture exported using Border Fx, with the same preset is used on the first picture  This picture was exported on Feb 27, and as far as I know, I made no adjustments to Border Fx, just using the same default preset that I used in the first picture.
Note that in this image, the border still has the soft inner edge, but now it appears grey and not white.  I've tried to get the white border back in Border Fx, but whenever I select the soft edge option, the border turns grey.  There's nothing I can do within Border Fx to bring the border back to white.  I haven't tried any of my other presets to see if they still work as before or not.  I've tried to delete this preset and recreate it, but I can't do that either.  It's not that big of a deal, but I think something has changed.  I guess I could go back using Time Machine and re-set OS X back to 10.9.1, but I don't really want to do that just on account of this.  I also feel that Border Fx is not handling multiple borders the way it used to, but I can't be sure of that.  Thanks for replying to my question.
