Blending mode : color . How it works?

Is there one simple exercise for to know  how it works blending mode : color?
Please.
Thanks

Quote from the Help:
Color
Creates a result color with the luminance of the base color and the hue and saturation of the blend color. This preserves the gray levels in the image and is useful for coloring monochrome images and for tinting color images.

  • Color blend mode / Color brush mode doesn't work

    Hello,
    I have CS3, working on Windows 7/64.  For some reason, I cannot get color modes to work.  I would like to be able to sample a color from one area, and use a brush set on "color" instead of "normal" to paint.  Instead, all it does is darken and make gray whatever color it is trying to brush over.  If I try to leave the brush on "normal" but the layer blend mode to "color," nothing at all happens.  When I try changing the layer blend mode to anything else, (screen/normal/difference/etc), it works as it is supposed to.  Any ideas how I could fix this?  Thank you so much in advance!!

    Hello!
    I have the same question, and what are the colors you are trying to paint on and with?
    Did you try to reset the brush tool by right-clicking its leftmost icon in the Option bar?

  • Blending with Color Burn not working

    I have an image in which I simply duplicated the background layer and changed the Blending Mode to Color Burn and it creates a very dark and dramatic result which I love. However, when I save it back to Lightroom (or anywhere else it turns out) as a TIFF, JPG, or PSD it always looks considerably lighter and loses the look. I thought i read somewhere about this blending mode using "transparent pixels (I don't even know what that means) and am wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem...
    Thanks all!

    We can't know. We don't know the exact settings you used in the timeline nor any other details like what version of AE, what system and so on, since you haven't bothered to provide them. From your shapes not being properly pre-composed to issues with 3D render order and collapsed transformations there could be anything going on. We simply don't know based on your insufficient info.

  • Blend modes in "stroke"-layer styles not working ?

    Hi. Anybody else got problems with the the blend modes in the "stroke" layer style, or am I doing something wrong?
    right click on layer > blending options > stroke > blend mode
    (position=inside)
    I want to use "fill type"="gradient", but the blend modes do not even work with "fill type"=color. For both fill modes, the stroke does not let any pixels of the layer shine through, no matter what blend mode I choose.
    I often use blend modes, for example "darken", etc. I know how they work, but somehow for the stroke layer style it seems not to work at all.
    I know, it's pretty basic, but I have spent several hours on that and simply don't succeed. Thanks for any help.

    As there's only a single sentence refering to the stroke layer style in the CS3 manual, I'd also be thankful for an Adobe comment, clarifying whether this is a bug or not and if it will be improved.
    Just to depict the current behaviour in a more graphic way:

    I'd suggest to add a checkbox "knockout", which would let the user choose between the two results.

  • Blend Mode is not working

    Ok, so randomly blend mode just completely stopped working on the image I was working with, I tried other images with the same result. I called Adobe and they had me go to %appdata% and extract a folder called Photoshop CS5 settings on to my desktop. It worked for a second, but stopped working as soon as I closed the image I had tested it on. Has anyone had this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,

  • Photoshop Help Video - Can't Locate Katrin Eismann Blending Modes Video

    I bookmarked a Katrin Eismann video on blending modes on May 7, 2010. I am trying to locate that video now, so far without success.
    Here's the former link: http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/video_workshop/?id=vid0012
    As I recall, she showed a great example of how to isolate just a portion of a night time scene. As best I recall, the trees were colorful while everything else was black and white.
    I have been hunting for a while without success. I believe it used to be associated with the help file. In fact it still is. If you search on Adobe's help for "blending modes" your first link is likely:
    Photoshop Help | Blending modes
    And as you work your way though the discussion, you find this:
    These examples show the result of painting part of the image’s face using each blending mode.
    For a video on blending modes, see www.adobe.com/go/vid0012.
    Does anyone know how I can locate this video?

    This same non-existent link is still listed on various Adobe web pages, but alas, the page with the video no longer exists. This is obviously an error on the part of the (huge) Adobe website.
    The best thing to do is to submit a bug report, and hope they fix it:

  • Wmode transparent and blend mode problem

    Dear all,
    I'm stuck with this problem so far, got headache after searching many days on google without solution. Our designer using blend mode: screen (in flash) for some movies and the flash's transparent to save the file size display and then ưe are using html background. All'r working fine for wmode transparent but in Internet Explorer, it's not working to display the blend mode and appear the black background. You can check the image below to see what happen:
    Loading the movies within blend mode screen
    Transparent's working fine with the normal transparent
    Test blend mode with opaque wmode to see how it will display
    I've tested with IE7, 8, 9. I'm using window 7 Ultimate, 64bit, Flash player latest version. (And my clients, friends, also got that issues when seeing it with IE).
    My embed code:
    <object width="1000" height="600" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" >

    </object>
    We can solve it manually that put the image background into the flash but it's not the good way to do it in our modern web industry.
    Any solution?

    dont why i can't submit in the bugbase, it's just hanged out though i submit all the required information T.T
    Update: the bug only with IE9. (i concerned IE 7, 8 because i've tested it by IE9 development tool, not real IE 7, 8). Today i've tried testing with real IE7, 8 and it's working fine.

  • Are FW blending modes preserved

    FL and expect the blending modes to remain intact?

    I'm not sure about CS3, but as of Flash 8, these FW blend
    modes were
    supported:
    Darken
    Multiply
    Lighten
    Screen
    Overlay
    Hard light
    Add
    Subtract
    Difference
    Invert
    Erase
    I didn't hear much about the blend modes when CS3 came out,
    so chances
    are they are still the same. You can quickly check by Opening
    Flash and
    seeing if the mode you want is there. Generally, if the blend
    modes
    exists, it should work. Another option is to create a
    flattened copy of
    the blended image.

  • Blending Modes ("vivid light") in After Effects?

    I discovered that in After Effects CS6 (Win7) some blending modes seem to not work as expected.
    I have a bitmap with transparencies above another bitmap and want to blend it with "vivid light" - but the result is the same as if i had no blending mode selected at all. The same is for "hard light", "linear light" or "hard mix".
    Other blending modes like "multiply", "soft light" and "overlay" work just fine.
    Does anyone have an idea what is wrong with my After Effects?

    I'm sorry for not being as specific as requested in the faq. I thought it might be more helpful to reduce the problem description to the most relevant facts first, and see if it can be solved in a simple way.
    My former experiences with providing all existing information in the first post is usually met with no answers at all, because people think: WOAH! Too much information. ;-)
    Okay, I designed my video design in Photoshop CS6 first. This is how the design was supposed to look like - as it was composed in Photoshop.
    There are two layers:
    1. a pattern of semi-transparent patches on top and
    2. a blue gradient background
    the pattern (1) is composited with blending mode "vivid light" on the background (2).
    After I exported both layers as pngs (24bit alpha) and imported them in After Effects and used the same settings as in photoshop, I got the following:
    As you can see, I used "vivid light" as blending mode, but it looks exactly as if blending mode "normal" was used.
    The render quality is set to final quality.
    The same happens with blending modes "hard light", "linear light" or "hard mix" (i guess, you don't need screenshots, because they all look the same)
    But other blending modes like "multiply", "soft light" and "overlay" work fine (in this case I used "overlay"):
    So, the problem is: Why do some blending modes not work, while others work?
    BTW: I also tried to import the PSD directly into After Effects with all layers retained, in case something was wrong with the pngs, that I exported - but the imported PSD produced exactly the same error. So, no difference there.
    Now for all the questions from the faq.  - i think most of them will not help to identify the issue, but i will try and answer all of them:
    What version of After Effects? Include the minor version number (e.g., After Effects CS5.5 with the 10.5.1 update).
    CS6 (11.0.2)
    Have you installed the recent updates? (If not, you should. They fix a lot of problems.)
    yes, I have
    What operating system? This should include specific minor version numbers, like "Mac OSX v10.6.8"---not just "Mac".
    Windows 7, 64bit latest version, all updates installed
    What kind(s) of source footage? When telling about your source footage, tell us about the codecs, not just the container types. For example, "H.264 in a .mov container", not just "QuickTime".
    any footage. it's regardless of what footage I use. in this special case it was 2 pngs (24bit alpha) - see above.
    If you are getting error message(s), what is the full text of the error message(s)?
    there is no error message
    What were you doing when the problem occurred?
    see above
    Has this ever worked before? If this worked before by doesn't work now, what has changed on your computer in the intervening time?
    it's the first time I tried
    What other software are you running?
    mainly software like Google Chrome or Microsoft Office - I'm not sure they have anything to do with the problem
    Do you have any third-party effects or codecs installed?
    I have Magic bullet looks installed, but since I don't use it in this project, I don't think it's got anything to do with the problem
    Tell us about your computer hardware. Include CPU type and number of processor cores, amount of RAM installed, GPU, number of disk drives, and how any external drives are connected.
    Intel something, 6 cores, 12GB RAM, and NVIDIA GTX 590 graphics card, (driver 306.97)
    Do you have any third-party I/O hardware (e.g., AJA, Matrox, Blackmagic, MOTU)?
    no
    Are you using OpenGL features in After Effects?
    I don't know.. I thought OpenGL in CS6 is all automatically and can not be turned off or on?
    but i switched quality to "final render".
    Does the problem only happen with your final output, RAM preview, or both?
    everywhere
    Are you using Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing?
    yes. but if I turn it off, nothings changes
    What is the exact sequence of steps that you are taking?
    see above
    hope this helps

  • Combine by Blend Mode?

    I have a tedious production task I'd love help automating.
    I receive layouts with mutliple layers of product shots (with transparency) in Normal blend mode. Most of those layers also have separate shadow layers in Multiply blend mode. (Sometimes these layers have masks, othertimes not.) Depending on how the file was built, product layers might be in proximity of their shadow layers, or they may not, making organization and contraction challenging.
    (In case it matters, sometimes all layers (products and shadows) are housed inside a single group, sometimes there are no groups at all.)
    Ultimately, I'd like to merge all the Product layers into one Normal mode layer, and all the Shadow layers into one Multiply mode layer (with masks applied), with the two layers linked to each other.
    Can layers be identified and merged according to blend modes?

    This might work.
    But this disregards possible masks on groups and just moves the Multiply artLayers into one group and all others into another.
    // move all artlayers set to multiply and all other artlayers into two layersets and then merge those;
    // 2011; use it at your own risk;
    #target photoshop;
    if (app.documents.length > 0) {
    var myDocument = app.activeDocument;
    var artLayers = collectLayers(myDocument);
    var multiplyGroup = myDocument.layerSets.add();
    multiplyGroup.name = "multiply";
    multiplyGroup.blendMode = BlendMode.MULTIPLY;
    var normalGroup = myDocument.layerSets.add();
    normalGroup.name = "normal";
    for (var m = 0; m < artLayers.length; m++) {
         var thisLayer = artLayers[m];
         if (thisLayer.blendMode == BlendMode.MULTIPLY) {
              thisLayer.move(multiplyGroup, ElementPlacement.PLACEATBEGINNING)
         else {
              thisLayer.move(normalGroup, ElementPlacement.PLACEATBEGINNING)
    normalGroup.merge();
    multiplyGroup.merge();
    ////// function collect all layers //////
    function collectLayers (theParent) {
         if (!allLayers) {
              var allLayers = new Array}
         else {};
         for (var m = theParent.layers.length - 1; m >= 0;m--) {
              var theLayer = theParent.layers[m];
    // apply the function to layersets;
              if (theLayer.typename == "ArtLayer") {
    // exclude background layer;
                   if (theLayer.isBackgroundLayer == false) {
                        allLayers.push(theLayer)
              else {
                   allLayers = allLayers.concat(collectLayers(theLayer))
    // this line includes the layer groups;
    //               allLayers.push(theLayer);

  • Layer blend mode doesn't show in export

    Hi,
    I am trying to export a composition from After Effects CC, I am using a Multiply blending mode in most of my layers to give it a better look.
    When previewing in after effects it looks as I want it too look but when I add to AME and export it to youtube and vimeo the Multiply blending mode does not work and it shows the composition as if all the layers had NORMAL blending mode.
    How can I fix this?
    Thanks a lot!

    Render a normal Image sequence or Quicktime clip directly from AE and convert it in AME, which would be smarter, anyway.

  • Blend Mode Selection in Photoshop minor difference between platforms

    Guys you REALLY need to do something about this asap. I don't know if it's a mac/pc problem or if it's a CS6 problem. I have been working with photoshop on PC for the past 9 years or so. I recently had to switch to CS6 on Mac.
    I can no longer place my cursor in the blend modes field and use arrow keys to quickly toggle through them to find the ideal mode. I used to be able to preview 15 blend modes in just 5-6 seconds and land on the ideal mode... and get on with my project. NOW i have to click this button and click again on each blend mode... lengthening my process by up to 2 minutes. This is an ENORMOUS problem for me as choosing blend modes is critical in my day to day design work.
    See the menu right next to it where you can type in the opacity? I can put my cursor in there and use arrow keys to adjust values. Blend mode NEEDS to work this way too. And this is on a mac. You simply HAVE to do something here. productivity impacted severely.
    Also.. this problem exists in After Effects CS5 on pc. Let's get it fixed there too. I will hand-write you a letter of praise and send flowers if you can do this.

    That could be because some readers are blinded by the white background and shiny badge of MVP and Staff posts.
    If not, then it's strange that nobody is interested in working out why the OP has the problem or how to restore correct behaviour to his/her installation.
    I can tell you the rationale behind my post, if it helps. The original poster's real goal was to "...preview 15 blend modes in just 5-6 seconds and land on the ideal mode... and get on with my project."
    On my Mac, I can certainly click in the menu and use the arrow key to go up and down, as conroy said. But what that does not do is apply the blend mode, unless I also press Return. But pressing Return kicks you out of the menu so you have to start the click/arrow/Enter cycle again, which is a long way just to try the next blend mode. So while the superficial reading of the problem says "I can arrow key through the menu, problem solved," it doesn't solve the real goal of "preview 15 blend modes in just 5-6 seconds."
    But Shift+ can, because it saves so many steps over click/arrow/Enter (and because the native OS X pop-up can't do any better). So Shift+ was a more appropriate solution, and the original poster already said it solves their problem.
    If you read the original post, I think what is really going on is a Windows/Mac switcher issue, not an unfixed bug. Windows and Mac pop-up menus work very differently. In Windows, you can enter text into a drop-down list directly and up/down arrow through the list without the menu actually popping up. (For a Mac example, see the Type tool Font and Size menus in the Options bar in Photoshop, which I assume are custom-coded. Compare to the Font and Size menus in Apple Pages or Keynote.) He switches to Mac Photoshop, and Blend Modes menu doesn't work that way. It might never work that way, because native Mac pop-up menus are much more mouse-oriented.
    Now, if there is a verifiable bug in the menu, Adobe should fix it. You might want to make sure it's listed at the Photoshop Feedback site, and add it if it isn't there.

  • Debug error when changing blending modes

    Hi there,
    I get a Debug Error every time I use 2 Adjustment Layers one above each other, with the following effects applied:
    Adjustment Layer Above:

    Adjustment Layer Below:

    I first started to get this error, while working with various media files in 1440x1080/HDV 1080i mode (Sony Z7U native)/29.97fps/1.33 sequence. Trying to understand what it goes wrong, I created a new project and recreated the adjustment layers (AL) with same effects applied - the only thing changed was the JPG added as media under both ALs. Same debug errors every time the blending is changed from normal to any other blending mode. With normal blending on the AL above, everything is fine.
    After further testing, it looks like even with only one AL (no effects) above the JPG, get the same debug error when blending is changed from normal to any other mode.
    Important note: Same layer+effect configuration applied in 1920x1080/ARRI Cinema mode/24fps/1.0 sequence - it works with no debug error. Haven't tried any other editing modes yet.

  • Merging down a layer with FX, changed it's color - how come?

    Hi guys,
    I made a file, with a layer that has FX, and than I create another layer under it and merged it down and the colors changed completey...

    Are You aware what a Layer’s Blend Mode is?
    The Blend Mode determines how a Layer’s pixel’s color-values interact with the underlying pixel’s color values to produce the resulting pixel’s color values.
    Naturally one Layer can only have one Blend Mode.
    what is the point if i'm unable to flattem image later?
    The point would appear to be that one is able to produce an aesthetically satisfying image in Photoshop, which can at least be output without transparency.
    Why do You want to flatten those parts anyway?

  • Is there a way to get the result of using multiple blending modes in one object?

    Hello,
    I wonder if there's a way to merge multiple objects with blending modes to one object. Here is the example:
    On the left rhere are three objects with the same appearence but different blending modes(color dodge, normal, overlay), on the right they are overlapped, which are still three object. I'm looking for the way to have the same result as the right overlapped one, but as one object. Having the same multiple objects only for the result of color blending mode uses too much memory for my computer.
    Thank you for your help in advance.

    create one object: then in your appearance panel, duplicate the fill twice. Select the top fill and expand the sub menu, click on opacity, choose blending mode. repeat.
