Blind External Hard drive - MAD !

Any ideas on the following - pretty please, I am going slightly nuts!....
I'm a professional photographer and travel everywhere with my MacBook Pro 15" - Im running Leopard. I also travel with a LaCie rugged 160 & 80GB external hard drive- just recently - when I return home i have plugged the hard drives into my G5 (also running leopard) and they are not detected!!!! So I cant use my G5 for all the retouching archiving etc etc etc and its sending me crazy.
I've sent the G5 tower into the local Apple store - no fix - I've spoken to Apple support, rebooted, reintstalled Leopard and rest the SMU - still no detection of the hard drives. I've been in to Dic Utilities and the hard drives dont register with either Firewire, or USB
All my other peripherals work - isight camera, card readers, printers etc
This issue started maybe a month ago - in fact I thought the LaCie was at fault and went out and bought another - Just to summarise,,, LaCies work when plugged into the laptop no problem - but do not register on the G5 ??????? By the way, they did up until a month ago ! - I've tried new cables also by the way
Any help - very much appreciated
Cheers

All my other peripherals work - isight camera, card readers, printers etc
So you are saying other FireWire devices work, because those are USB devices (except for the iSight camera)?
You can test the "not enough power" theory by getting a FireWire hub. They provide their own power and, for me, provides a +safety barrier+ between the FireWire device and the FireWire port on my Power Mac G5.
I recently had the front FireWire port on my Power Mac G5 go bad, after unplugging a FireWire drive. It still provided power (my small bus-powered drive spun up), but no data connection. The back ports still worked. Luckily, it was still under AppleCare, so it was fixed at no cost to me (they apparently replaced the small board connected to the front ports).
Now, I use a FireWire hub when I connect devices that I connect and disconnect often, to avoid wear and tear (and whatever problem caused the frying of my front port) on the Mac's built-in FireWire ports. For my self-powered external drive that are connected all the time, I use the Mac's FireWire 800 port directly. I'd rather replace that $25 hub than deal with another repair on the Mac (in a few months I won't have AppleCare).

  • How can I tell the app store to ignore my external hard drive?

I have a macbook pro, that was running 10.8..  I wanted to upgrade to Yosemite, but was very afraid I would regret it, so I got an external hard drive, made a bootable clone, and then installed yosemite onto that, upgraded XCode, etc-- made sure everything would actually work..  After I saw everything was relatively good and painless, I then went to install Yosemite on my main computer..
Whoops?  Yosemite installer is gone?  It self deletes?  That is really annoying since it's a 5.8gb download...  Anyway, I re-download it, format my MBP hard drive and install from scratch.
I then boot from my MBP-- and go to the app store to install XCode, and---  it just has "OPEN" as an option, not install..  When I click OPEN, it's opening it off my external hard drive.  WHAT?
So I unmount my external hard drive..  Click install..  remount my external hard drive, it goes along downloading the multi-gigabyte XCode file...  I continue copying the various needed files from my bootable clone to my MBP...  Two hours later, the download finishes...  Guess what?  No XCode in my Applications.
Apparently when I remounted my external drive, it decided "I already have XCode!  no need for this!", and discarded the download?????
...  Anyway, needless to say, this is ridiculously annoying.  Is there a way to tell the app store to NOT look at anything except my internal HD?

Check the date & version of the external Xcode. If that is current drag it to the Apps folder, eject the external & run Xcode. It should update if it has any available.
I don't know what would have caused it to abort or remove the download. It's possible it installed into your user folder, check for the Applications folder in there.
Does the store list it as installed with & without the external connected?

  • Conflict between iPod and external hard drive

I just got a 250GB external hard drive made by SimpleTech so that I could store all my music and video off my computer hard drive. However, when it's running, it disconnects my iPod and won't let me transfer files to it through iTunes. Seeing as how I want to sync all the files on my external with my iPod, this kind of defeats the whole purpose of the external. It doesn't matter what USB port I try it in, every time Is tart it up, it stops my iPod from communicating. Anyone have any ideas what this is about or how to fix it?

Try changing the drive letter of either the ext hd or your iPod.
Click on control panel/admin tools/computer management/disk management/right click on the iPod to re-assign the drive letter.
Choose something lower down the alphabet, say 'M' or something similar.
The iPod can be confused by any other storage devices assigned a similar drive letter even though they may not connected at the same time.

I upgraded MacbookPro 2009 from 10.6.8 to Yosemite 2 weeks ago. My iphoto is now a nightmare. i went to our local apple retailer but they could not help either. Perhaps someone can help. Beforehand the OS upgrade I made a backup copy of my Iphoto library onto an external hard drive. Lets call it BU with 50GB. I also deleted half of my photos from the default library on my laptop, lets call it DE, now with about 20GB, to gain space. I then upgraded to Yosemite.
I have also installed since a long time Iphoto Library Manager 3.8.6. (this may be the cause of the problem as it was not upgraded and perhaps thus not compatible with iphoto 9.6 which I have now after the upgrade to Yosemite) It all worked fine before the upgrade, switching in iphoto between the two libraries DE and BU.
It also worked fine after the upgrade for a few days. At one stage Iphoto asked me to upgrade the iphoto version as it otherwise could not read the photos when I tried to load the BU library into iphoto. I did click yes to upgrade iphoto. As a result I became a brand new but totally empty library, no photos.
BU was still on the external disc, however the "Master" file was empty. We fortunately discovered all photos were in another file called Old Master, also under BU. We made another copy of the Old Master file onto the external disc. Lucky we did, because shortly afterwards we could not open anymore the BU file thus had no access to anything in there. Now I have 17000 photos in a file called Old Master on my external disc and another smaller library  DE on my laptop. When I tried to import the photos from Old Master into a new iphoto library it was very messy. All events dates were mixed up, many photos were imported twice. I have no idea whether all my 17000 photos have been imported.
Can anyone suggest what is the most time efficient way? How do I best import my 17000 into a new library ensuring I don't loose any in the process. I do not wish sorting through 17000 photos for a week or so. Shall i also get a new iphoto library version now? Thank you for anything that may work.

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

Snow Leopard's Startup Disk pref can’t see Yosemite volumes. So the only way to switch from Snow Leopard to Yosemite is to do what Niel mentioned. Doesn't matter whether it's connected by USB or Firewire, although performance via FW would be faster.
Are you saying that Yos/10.10, as a volume located in a mounted external drive won't appear as an option in Snow Leopard's Startup Disc, in Sys Prefs? I've never heard this one before. AFAIK any mounted volume, regardless of OS, should appear there. I would think that, if it appears in the Boot Picker/Startup Manager it would also appear and could be booted to from Snow's Startup Disk. I can't test this myself, since I don't have Yos. Is what you are saying documented somewhere?

I may have found an answer here:

They only thing I can assume is that my external hard drive was slow to start and iTunes defaulted to its old directory (see the last paragraph at the link above). However, once my external was recognized shouldn't everything have fixed itself?

  • I made a Blurb book through Lightroom 5, on another computer, backed it up on an external hard drive and tried to import it into my imac.  I got the picture files, but could not get the book I had worked on.  How do I find my book?

I made a 'Blurb' book using Lightroom on a computer that was not mine.  I backed up the book on an external hard drive and then tried to import the book into my imac.  I wasn't able to retrieve my book.  The photos I used for the book project are there, but the 45 page book I made is not there.
What do I need to do?

You would need to go to the computer containing the book.
Select the saved book in the Collection panel.
Go to Grid View [ G ] and select all the images [Cmd/Ctrl][A]
File>Export as Catalog and store on media you can use to transfer
Bring this catalog onto your computer
File>Import from another catalog and bring the transitory catalog into your master catalog.
It should bring the images, your collections (including your book) and other settings into your own catalog.

Trying to download photos from IPHONE, IPAD to IPHOTO in IMAC after installing new hard drive.
How did you import the photos to iPad and iPhone?
If the photos have been synced to the iPhone and iPad using iTunes, you cannot sync them back.
    See this document:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236
You can't reimport pictures synced from your computer to your device back to your computer. You can only import pictures in the Camera Roll or Saved Photos from your device to your computer. If you need to retrieve synced photos from your device:
If your photos are not in the Camera Roll on your devices, save them to the Camera Roll, share them to the Photo Stream, mail the photos, or, if you have iPhoto on the devices, use iTunes Photo Sharing.
    http://help.apple.com/iphoto/iphone/2.0/?handbuch#blnkee26bc1
Save photos to your computer using iTunes
Connect your iOS device to your computer.
Tap a photo, album, event, web journal, or slideshow and tap Share> iTunes.
Tap Selected, or change the photos you want to save (if you are saving a slideshow skip to step 4):
Select different photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap one or more photos, and tap Next.
Select a range of photos: Tap Choose Photos, tap Range, tap the first and last photos in the range, and tap Next.
Select all the photos in an album or event: Tap All.
In iTunes, click the button for your device and click Apps at the top of the window.
Below File Sharing, select iPhoto (in Apps).
Select the Shared Photos folder under iPhoto Documents.
Click Save To and select the location on your computer where you want to save the items.
To view your photos, go to the Finder and look in the location you selected above.

  • How to move photos edited in Lightroom 2 from external hard drive to Lightroom 5 without losing changes/metadata made in Lightroom 2?

I had images processed in Lightroom 2 on an old PC that crashed, but were backed to external hard drive. I now have a Macbook Pro with Lightroom 5. When I import the photos from the hard drive the editing/metadata I added in Lightroom 2 are not there. Is there a way to bring the photos in with the changes made in Lightroom 2 or do I have re-edit the photos? The odd thing is when I go into the folders on the Lacie back-up and open a photo (that I know I edited) into Photoshop CS5 there are no changes.

Yes, that is a backup of your LR2 catalog file. You need to find the most recent one available (obviously, that backup was made on 2013-04-09), and then copy it to a hard drive on your computer (internal or external) but not a network drive, and then open it in Lightroom 5. You should see that all of your photos have a place in the grid, but won't have a thumbnail and there may be a question mark icon on each folder.
To fix the question mark on each folder, please read: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders and then the thumbnails will appear as well

If you want to back it up there, use the Disk Utility to create a disk image of it.
If you want to import its contents to iMovie, iTunes, or elsewhere, use MPEG Streamclip and Apple's MPEG-2 playback component to convert the VOB files on it to a different format.

  • Time Machine back up made from an external hard drive

    Hi...to all
Last week i bought a Macbook. I pluged in my external hard drive Maxtor OneTOuch 4 Plus and it did a time machine backup on the Maxtor OneTOuch 4 Plus. The folder that was generated by the time machine on my external hard drive has the name backups.backupdb.
Then, i decided to return the Macbook and bought a Macbook Pro.
When I pluged the same external hard drive, Maxtor OneTOuch 4 Plus, although I am able to access and open individual files and folders, I am not able to copy neither any nor all the folders from my external hard drive to my new Macbook Pro. Moreover, I am able to access/open the files located in my external hard drive but when try to copy specific files from this drive to my Macbook Pro I get the following error message: Sorry the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error ocurred (Error code -50). Now, here is where it gets interesting: after 2 failed attempts to copy files from my external hard drive to my Macbook Pro desktop and receiving the above error message I am then able to copy the specific file (singular). This would mean that to copy the files and folders in the external hard drive i would need to do it on a one by one basis? If so, it would take forever...
Can someone please kindly help out.
    Thanks on advance

  • HT1553 DO I HAVE TO HAVE THE ORIGINAL INSTALLATION DISCS IF MY HARD DRIVE IS REPLACED BUT I MADE A BACK UP WITH TIME MACHINE TO AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE ?

I have an imac from late 2009 and received an email saying the seagate hard drive may fail and apple is going to replace it free of charge. I will back up using time machine to an external hard drive but do I absolutely have to have the original installation CD's or is there a way around this to restore the computer once they replace the hard drive??

Yes, you can partition your 2TB drive that way. In fact, I have an external hard drive with 3 partitions: one for a SuperDuper! clone of my Snow Leopard partition, one to clone my Lion partition, and one larger partition for Time Machine (which only backs up the Lion partition).
I would expect the authorized reseller to have a complete set of OS X disks.

  • Time Machine made my External Hard Drive Unrecognizable

Hi, Last night I set up Time Machine to only use a section of my backup hard drive. I woke up this morning and it said that it did not have enough space on the drive and there was a preparing box open. Then I got the spinning beach ball for about an hour, then I just said this is enough.
I did a hard reboot because a soft one was just not working, then when I restarted, I got about a series of 8 loops of the opening Apple sound. Very weird, I did another hard reboot but unplugged the External Hard Drive this time and it booted up fine. But now when I plug in my External Hard Drive, it makes some noises as if it is connecting but it never does. It doesn't show up in finder at all. It does show up in Disk Utility though.
My question is, can anyone tell me how I can either fix this problem or recover the data from my hard drive in any way. I read some about using dd, but just became utterly confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately that did not work, if I start with my External Hard Drive the way it is now, it just gives me a loop of the Apple start up sound for about 4 minutes then finally starts up.
UPDATE: Ok, very weird, I guess your instructions did work. Even though it did not boot properly with the external hard drive powered on, when I booted it after start-up, it showed and now lists all my files. Miraculous!
Now my question is, is there something I should delete that Time Machine left over on my External Hard Drive that would prevent the looping start up sound?
Thank you all very much, your advice was greatly appreciated.

  • How do I import favorites onto a restored system from a backup that I made on an external hard drive before I had exported the favorites?

I have downloaded Firefox to my laptop, which crashed, and could not be restored by my backup software. All files reside on an external hard drive, including Firefox. I had not exported my favorites prior to the crash. How do I import those favorites from the external hard drive?

Favorites or '''bookmarks'''? Firefox can't handle the "favorites" data, you need to restore that data to IE, and then export it in bookmarks.html format which is what Firefox can import.
