Blind Vias in Ultiboard v9 and v10

I have been dealing with EWB for some months now on a problem with placing blind vias into Ultiboard designs.  They have been "working on it" without any good solutions.  I would like to see if there are other users with this issue.  For grins I would like users to set up a 4 layer PCB in the PCB Options.  Check that the blind vias checkboxes are checked.  Draw a board outline and then place a via inside the board outline.  When prompted set the via to go from Copper Top to Inner1.  Next check the 3D view.  Note that the via at this point is blind and does not appear on the Copper Bottom.  Now right click on the via in the design window and select Properties.  Now click on the Autorouting Layers tab.  Note that the only checkboxes that appear are the Copper Top and Inner 1.  Click OK.  Right click the via again and select Properites.  Once again check the Autorouting Layers tab and notice that all the layers show up (Copper Top, Inner1, Inner2, and Copper Bottom).  Now check the 3d view and note that the via has magically became a through hole and shows up on the Copper Bottom.  The real gotcha is that if we hide the Copper Top and Inner1 in the design view the via will not show up on Inner 2 and Copper Bottom.  The other gotcha is that if we were to export the Gerber data we would find there is truly data on all 4 layers.  This is not an easy fix inside your design once this happens.  Even if you do the "work around" that EWB told me to do it still does not update the Excellon Drill output.  I had to manually tweak the drill file even after I went through the "work around" process.   I just want to verify that I am not alone in this anomoly.  I can't believe that it is something specific to my system and furthermore I can't believe that this has made it clear to version 10!  Don't get caught like me deep into a design with a number of blind vias and find out about this.  EWB you have a MAJOR problem.

Hello bgoracke:
First of all - thank you very much for your feedback - we always welcome your comments to help drive continued improvements to the product platform. The problem that you are encountering with Ultiboard 9/10 has come to the attention of the Electronics Workbench Group R&D team very recently. Based on the importance of the issue, R&D has given it a very high priority. It is currently being fixed (and tested) and it will be available in the next update for version 10.
For anyone currently facing the same issue with blind or buried vias in Ultiboard, the workaround is to avoid loading the properties for that via. Simply place the via in the board and do not call its properties after placement. Currently, loading the properties (double-click or by right-click>properties) resets the via settings and causes it to become a via that crosses all layers. If you accidentally load the properties, click Cancel and it won't modify the via. Clicking OK or Apply will reset the via to a through-board via. If you have currently some vias with this issue, you can 'replace' them with new vias and the error will be eliminated.

  • Printing Differences Between v8.5 and v10

    Post Author: ChrisW
    CA Forum: General
We have recently upgraded from CR v8.5 to v10.
We use Faxmaker to send faxes by "printing" a CR report to the Faxmaker printer driver. The fax recipient's number is "printed" in the top left corner of the first page as "::xxxxxxxxxxx". Faxmaker detects this string of text, extracts the number, removes the text from the page and uses the number to send the fax.
Since upgrading to CRv10, Faxmaker no longer detects this string, so obviously the fax fails to send.
It would seem to me that CR v8.5 printed reports as formatted text and objects, which Faxmaker could detect, and that v10 is now printing pages as a whole image, so Faxmaker can't see the relevent text.
I have tried CR v8.5 and v10 installed on the same machine. Printing from CR v8.5, Notepad, Wordpad, Word, etc all work fine sending faxes. CR v10 will not.
Can anyone suggest anything I can try with CR v10 so that it "prints" text as text objects?

    Chris -
Did you ever come up with a solution?  We have just encountered the same problem, and are alos currently on CRv10.  We will be moving to CRv11 in the near future.  I am hoping that this will take care of the problem, but I'm not too confident in that.
Obviously, you can print manually a page at a time to faxmaker, but that is time consuming and not a real workaround.

  • Similarity b/w v6 and v10?

I am a frequent user of GB 11 v6. I intend to upgrade to v10. But, I'm not sure whether it's a good upgrade or not. Can anybody help me with this? I rely on GB a lot for all my music recordings and production. How similar are the controls and features in v10? Is it a good upgrade or not?

See my answer to your related question here: Re: Upgrading OSX without upgrading Garageband?
GarageBand '11 and the new Mavericks version are very different.  If you decide to upgrade to Mavericks, you may want to keep both versions in parallel.
    The new GarageBand 10.0 has
a graphical user interface, that is similar to Logic Pro X
the controls more directly accessible in the smart controls
    Many more instruments.
Smart instruments, like arpeggiator and smart drums.
    But missing are:
    Podcast track and chapter markers
the ability to add any filter to any track - you will have to find a patch that has all filters you neeed predefined.
Many controls are hidden and you will need some time to explore the new interface.
Older Audio Units and plug-ins may no longer be compatible.
GarageBand '11 and GarageBand 10.0 have compatible loop libraries and Instrument libraries. You can use them concurrently. So upgrade to Mavericks, but keep GB '11, if you want to try out the new 10.0.
One thing to be aware of - GB 10.0 will upgrade projects to a new format. Don't open GB '11 projects in GB 10.0 without keeping a backup copy, if you still want to use them with GB '11.

  • About Player v10.1 and v10.0 issues

    HI all,
I've meet this problem when coding as follows :-
    stop();
    var pTempoNum:Number = 0;
    var gMcLoader1:MovieClipLoader = new MovieClipLoader();
    function Load_Mc(cLoader, cFile, cObj) {
    cLoader.loadClip(cFile,cObj);
    function Unload_Mc(cLoader, cObj) {
    cLoader.unloadClip(cObj);
    Load_Mc(gMcLoader1,"DisplayObj1.swf",Loader1);
These code works on v10.0, but not on v10.1.     Have no idea with this.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you !

you are talking about AS2 right?

  • Help for PCB Stack up and MicroVia Ultiboard 7

    Hello,
i need some help with my PCB. I will design a 10 Layer PCB with micro-vias and buried-vias. I asked my PCB manufaturer for a matching PCB stack-up and
    for the design rules.
Now I need micro-vias from the top-layer to the inner 1 layer and from the inner 8 layer to the bottom-layer. That works fine, i can choose it in the board settings. But, I need also buried-vias from the inner 1 layer to the inner 8 layer, and there is my problem, because I can't choose it. Have you guys
any suggestions how i can solve this problem ???
    Many thank's to all...

  • Ultiboard 11 - New design layout challenges

    Hello again NI team,
We have just recently started designing new PCBs using Ultiboard 11.0.1, and we've run into several challenges with the software, on issues ranging from setting up Global Preferences, to basic trace routing. Below are some of the issues we've discovered this past week:
Trace vias can be moved and disconnected from their trace, and cannot be used to drag a trace by themselves.
It is impossible to move two traces connected with a via without either creating two opposing all-angle traces, or disconnecting the trace from the next vectors.
Vias apparently only come in two sizes; standard and micro. (no drop-down for multiple sizes within one design)
Without any explanation, the ability to drag a component and have the trace redraw can be lost, whether with manually drawn traces or follow me traces. (‘Part drag’ in Global Prefs. was still checked)
Redrawn traces change path significantly despite net topology set to ‘shortest’.
If a trace is manually moved, attached 90 degree bends are lost. UB11 automatically inserts rounded/chamfered corners.
If you move the trace further out, original geometry is lost altogether.
DRC filters are not saved within the PCB, and must be re-added every time the file is opened.
Layer visibility toggling has no keyboard shortcut. Only option is a two-click process in design toolbox.
‘Global Preferences’ such as color scheme, are not saved to the program, only the PCB. Newly created scheme settings are not saved once the program is exited.
Traces drawn using ‘follow me’ can be attached off-grid. There is no clear way to move the trace back onto the grid. This makes manual adjustment impossible without redrawing the entire trace.
Manual moving using the mouse to drag, or pasting of copied traces or objects results in 0.5 mil spacing, despite all PCB grids being set to 5.0 mil or higher.
A section of a trace that is re-routed can become a separate piece of a trace, even when perfectly inline with the sections attached to it. This necessitates multiple selections when attempting to move a single trace run, or deleting and rerouting the trace manually.
We are eager to use many of the advanced features available in this software, but these issues are making the process quite tedious. Are there functions we are overlooking?

    AVPro,
Hello.  There are a few things here that we can help with through some simple work arounds, some things have been sent in as feature requests... others I'll need to look at directly to reproduce and see if there is something that can be done.  Please send me an email to setup an online discussion ([email protected]).
Here are my intial thoughts - but we are certainly interested in helping you out and making you successful using the tool.   Also v12 may have addressed some of these things, but I'll need to follow up directly to verify....
Trace vias can be moved and disconnected from their trace, and cannot be used to drag a trace by themselves.
It is impossible to move two traces connected with a via without either creating two opposing all-angle traces, or disconnecting the trace from the next vectors.
Try this:   highlight the VIA and the connecting trace segment(s) by drawing a box with the mouse around the via and the segments of interest.   Now when you move the via with the arrow keys, the traces should 'rubber band' with the VIA.    I agree its not as nice as just dragging the VIAs and having the traces move with the VIA, but its the best work around I have for now.
Vias apparently only come in two sizes; standard and micro. (no drop-down for multiple sizes within one design)
Yes, this is an active feature request into R&D - better VIA management / sizing.   You can adjust the VIA one by one (and adjust) but you can only setup/select 1 standard via as default and adjust as needed throughout the design.  This is something I have tried to prioritized with R&D.
I think many of these things have been improved in UBv12, however I think we need to take a look at the design specifically.   You can use the <space> key to change the geometry as you are routing, but I am not sure about preserving redraw (lets look at in both v11 and v12).
DRC filters are not saved within the PCB, and must be re-added every time the file is opened.
We'll have to check on this for v12 - I think this was addressed.
Layer visibility toggling has no keyboard shortcut. Only option is a two-click process in design toolbox.
I think you are correct from a visibility standpoint, but when routing you can setup 'preferred layers' - F(X) keys and toggle between layers when routing (Q key in v12).  There are some suggested tricks to setting up visibility in UB - as an example if you have a ground plane, I suggest coloring that a dark color (gray) and then it will appear always in the background no matter the layer visibility settings.
‘Global Preferences’ such as color scheme, are not saved to the program, only the PCB. Newly created scheme settings are not saved once the program is exited.
Ok - agreed - this should be changed to a universal scheme setting as a default.
Ok - I'll need some additional information on this - can you send me a direct email so we can setup a dialog ([email protected]).
A section of a trace that is re-routed can become a separate piece of a trace, even when perfectly inline with the sections attached to it. This necessitates multiple selections when attempting to move a single trace run, or deleting and rerouting the trace manually.
Is the net settings getting changed?   Again lets look at this and we'll see what can be done (I'll try in v12 and see if its better).
    Regards,
    Pat Noonan

  • Where is the autoplacer function / menu in Ultiboard 9 ????

Hello, I am using Multisim and Ultiboard 9 and I am looking fo the AUTOPLACER function where the program wil automatically place the components on the circuit board for you...however I can't find this menu/function anywhere? I am using the Power Pro version. Also, is there a way to put the Auto route functions in the main menu at the top of the window? Right now all I have is two little 'Icons" in toolbar form, one to start the internal router and one to stop it...but again, no autoplacer. Thanks
    Brian

In V9, the router that comes with Ultiboard is limited to 2 layers.  The Ultiroute version that is sold separately gives you more layers and if you purchased the power pro, it has the autoplacer in there.
In V10, if you installed the power pro version of Ultiboard, it will have the autolacer in there.

  • Why I was about to quit ... and why I didn't

    Hi all,
I have been using Arch for 8 months now.
I recently no more felt has enthusiastic has I was before, for mainly two reasons :
    - Some updates broke some functionalities.
    - I felt like other distro's Gnome packaging was more eye candy than Arch's one.
I thus tried (again) Ubuntu, Mandriva, and Fedora using Virtualbox. I liked Fedora the most and decided to install it beside my Arch, and see if it could make me abandon Arch.
The answer is no : Arch is still definitely the best distro I have ever tried
    So why I didn't quit ?
    - I realized that whatever the gui tool you provide to configure a Linux system, one day or another your users will have to understand the background functionality and use the console + config files. With Fedora it came out very quickly because the famous Network Manager does not handle static IP configuration well (do you believe it ?). And I was very surprised that there was very few documentation to help using the config files. Fortunately my LFS + Gentoo + Arch experience helped me a lot . The "Arch Way" is so right about this point.
    - The package management : you can provide thousands of packages, one day or another your users will have to make their own package either because you do not provide it our because it needs a patch or a configure option which is not provided out of the box. If I found RPM easier than DEB, there are both at many light-years than PKGBUILD ease of use. Moreover I found pacman much simpler and easy to use than Yum.
    - The AUR : every distro make a choice concerning their package repository policy. But one day or another users will need a package outside the main repos. AUR make your life so easier than what you can find with Ubuntu or Fedora, where you have to browse the net to find a repo which override the main repo packages when you only need 1 package ! Also it really make it easy to contribute to the community.
    - Eye candy : Fortunately Ubuntu and Fedora people share their contributions to others. I am able to use Fedora's theme, and have all the eye candy I want ! If it is not delivered out of the box it is normal in fact : who have the same feelings as a color blind guy like me ?
and last but not least :
    - The updates : What ever the distro you use, you will one day have to cope with an update which broke a functionality. I have had this problem with EVERY distro I used. The thing is that you have to be more careful with a rolling release distro, because you have updates more frequently. Also the update breakage I had was mainly due to upstream bug, not to Arch. Now I will not perform every day update any more. I will only update the system when I know I have time to test every thing is normal and fix the problems if any. Also I will write down a list of packages I want to particularly care about and maybe put them in the NoUpgrage variable in my pacman.conf, so that I am warned when a new update is available for those packages and take some time to look at the update.
Definitely I am going to stay with Arch. The more I try other distros the more I think Arch is a distro for me. THE distro I have been looking for
Here is a little advice to those who, like me, felt like Arch was maybe not the best distro for you : Just try another one. Virtualbox (and others) is your friend. And even install a new distro beside your Arch. But please wait a few weeks before removing your Arch : you could wish you had not removed it sooner than you think ...

I often try to stay out of distro discussions because I realize that everyone has his or her own preferences. However, just a couple of days ago, I was researching a problem getting Konqueror to handle file associations properly.  One of the Google hits was in a Fedora forum. I was amazed at the lack of expertise in some of the posts that were intended to be helpful -- I'm not talking about people asking questions, I'm talking about people trying to "help" others. Several times the advice was just to reinstall all of KDE. I felt sorry for users of so many distros who, because their distro is designed to "protect" the user from the system's inner workings, are denied real understanding of how to maintain their systems.
I've always appreciated in Arch, Gentoo, and Slackware that there are truly knowledgeable people who are happy to lend advice, and that the distro itself is designed to encourage exploration. The goal is always to learn more, try to work through problems, and try to understand why something's not going right, not to just zap everything and start over (though I admit that on occasion that is the best solution).

  • How to use variants and/ or adding packages in Ulticap?

    Hi,
Can anyone please explain me a bit what "Variants" are for in Ultiboard 2001's Ulticap?
Recently I was rearranging my personal libraries in Ulticap and started to experiment with adding packages to symbols. (in order to reduce the number of seperate shapes).
In a symbol properties tab you can add Ultiboard packages and set one of those as the default one. Expecting when in Ulticap placing the symbol that I would get a list of the "available packages" with the default one on top. But unfortunately still a one-line dialog stil is shown with the a question mark or the default package already filled in (and ready to be ok-d or re-entered).
Exporting a schematic from Ulticap to Ultiboard and open the properties dialog of a component that I gave multiple packages in Ulticap still doesn't show the additional packages (to choose from).
So I started to wonder why we can add packages to shapes in Ulticap. I can't find any useful explanation about it in the binder that came with ultiboard 2001, nor I can find anything useful in docs that came with previous versions.
Anyway, I also ran into the "Variants" tab when opening the properties dialog of a shape in Ulticap. It might be something useful for my current issue but unfortunately again there's no reasonable explanation to find in the docs about what they are and what they are used for; just "how to add or change" is explained but not the slightest bit of a brief introduction.
The main goal for me is e.g. having a shape "_ELCO" and on the run select the right package since elco's have a diversity of sizes and I find it unpractical to fill up the library with seperate shapes for elco's of different sizes. Otherwise the lists in the library get too long for browsing through them when placing an other component.
So a brief explanation of the use of adding packages and what variants are for would be very helpful to me.
    Cheers,
    Roberto

    hi,
You cannot use the logical and  or condition together at the same time in SQL statement. Sachin is correct while using the and and or in the same condition. You can get the data using or condition in SQL statement, and then use the delete statement of internal table using the end condition. please find the following code for the same.
    select *
      from dtab
    where cond1 eq 'A1'
         or cond2 eq 'A2'.
    if sy-subrc eq 0.
delete itab where cond1 eq 'A1' and 'A2'.
    endif.

  • Can't Drag and Drop Anything

I've installed OS X Lion and now when I click on an icon on my desktop and drag it, it follows along nicely, only letting go of the mouse button doesn't drop it.  In fact, nothing does.  Instead the icon hangs onto the cursor as if I have kept holding down the mouse button.  If I want to drag something to the trash, when I hover over the Trash icon and let go, it acts like I'm still holding down the mouse button and instead opens up the Trash folder.  It's not limited to trash, it's just where I first noticed it.  I can't move files between folders.
This pretty much happens across the board, too.  Drag an icon off of the dock to remove it, it just hangs onto the mouse pointer and never goes away.  Drag an icon from the icon bar at the top (command-click) and you can pick up the icon and move it, but never drop it.  Is there a solution to this?

How amazing... I have EXACTLY the same problem...
    My Rig
Macbook Pro 15", Mid 2009, 2.66 Ghz. (Dual Graphics - GeForce 9400M & GeForce 9600M GT) running OS X 10.7 Build 11A511 - The Gold Master and eventually Retail version.
I have been running Snow Leopard and its subsequent updates, since its release. I have never had any issues with it at all, it was just the idiosyncrasies of the 3rd party software that would cause problems, but only minor, By the time Lion came around (I am a Developer so I got the GM in early July) I actually had a very stable rock solid computer
I am very methodical backing up, so when Lion was publicly released, I did the final Snow Leopard Migration assistant update, did a complete time machine backup.
I noticed that the build of the newly released Lion was the same as the development GM, so I decided to do what a normal customer would do, download it from the app store and install it on my now very stable Snow Leopard installation.
After the download finished, I clicked the install, nothing else and as per normal, thirty or so minutes pass and a restart happens, Lion is installed successfully over the top of my Snow Leopard.
Now here is when the problems started :-
When Lion booted, I just got a gray thatched screen, the login window was obviously there bust I couldn't see it, so typing blindly, I typed my password and the computer then loaded up my user account.
When that had finished, It looked nearly identical to the old Snow Leopard (a good thing). but when I clicked and dragged ANYTHING, in the Finder or in an App, what ever I was dragging stuck to the cursor and will not go away. I had to force quit the Finder or the App in question to get the cursor to "drop" the icon. (The problem in this thread)
the Second issue, was nothing with video or photos displayed... If I launched Safari 5.1 for example, and go to YouTube, the YouTube page would load, but as soon as it finished, It would flick to a blank white unclickable page.
Even the System Preferences were effected... If I went to Desktop & Screensaver the screensaver examples would just be a white box, nothing in them.. Desktop pictures were white. Even in the Finder, all the ICONS were white boxes.. no matter which view you put them in...
So these 2 combined issues are are pain...
anyway I solved the white page / Icons / screensaver / Flash / Youtube / problem by going to System Preferences, Energy Saver and turning the Graphics option to "Higher Performance"
If you have it set to "Better Battery Life" - the white screen problem reoccurs.
So I am now at the same stage as all of you. I have icons, text, browser elements, etc all sticking to the cursor when I go to drag them.. They just will not let go..
    My temporary workaround :-
Create another user account on your computer
Log into yours (which will be experiencing the stuck icon issue) then just switch to the newly created account and back to yours again.
That fixes it...I don't know why, but it does.
I tested it the other way as well... If you log into the newly created account first, it WILL experience the sticking icon problem.. Switching to your account and back again, fixes it...
All of this is really unnecessary and totally annoying... so I hope someone figures out what the **** is going on... I don't want to keep switching accounts every time I boot up the laptop...

  • Driver for HP psc 2510 and OSX 10.4.10?

Apple sent an upgrade for my OS 10.4, recommending download, so I did. Subsequently, when I tried to print something from e-mail, a message appeared to the effect that the computer could not recognize the driver. My 2510 HP all in one came up on an add printer box, but command was rejected for driver issue.
After trying everything else, generally cleaned up corrupted files, got everything else humming, and called HP tech support. Seems that my wonderful all in one printer is obsolete and the company has practically disowned it--no updates, parts, advice for this item. When Apple updated the OS 10.4.10, there was no longer interface with HP PSC2510.

Welcome to the discussions forum MrMom.
I think your Mac ought to be running OS X 10.4.11, so check Software Update again. If you're not successful, try this link: http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901 and select the *Combo Update* for your iMac (PPC or Intel, as appropriate).
HP's software for the PSC 2510 is located here: Select software and drivers.
Click on the link "Software for HP PSC 2500 Series - Mac OS X v10.3 and v10.4 (Universal)". I believe that's what you'll need.
According to HP and my own personal experience, the print drivers for this printer are already built into OS X. You only need the above software to use the scanner and fax features. I have a reference to that effect at home but I'm not there right now, so if you don't meet with success let me know and I'll research this further.
Seems that my wonderful all in one printer is obsolete and the company has practically disowned it--no updates, parts, advice for this item.
HP is not the company it used to be. Their interest in, and support for OS X is extremely limited. As such HP has tied themselves to a dying market. I no longer recommend them.

  • Has anyone updated the software for 10.6 Snow Leopard and found that their printer no longer scans or prints?

Last October, I bought a MAC desktop that uses MAC OS X 10.6.8 and an HP 1050 All-in-One Printer J401a.
Everything worked beautifully until messages kept popping up about downloading critical MAC software update. Eventually, I succumber to the persistence and took the 7 hours required to do the download.
Since then, the printer refuses to scan. A mesage informs that "HP Utility quit unexpectedly" and a report is being sent automatically to Apple.
A few days ago, I got an engineer to have a look. He re-ran the HP disk 3 times and managed to get the scanner to work, but only once. His second visit did absolutely nothing and now even the printer doesn't work.
HP informs that this is a problem with MAC OS X 10.7 and suggests downloading a correction.
Has the Apply update turned the 10.6 to a 10.7?
I have un-installed HP and disconnected the printer.
What can I do to get this important facility back?

    Thanks for the reply.
Even after the 7 hour update download the MAC OS X still says version 10.6.8 and nothing appears to have changed except printer and scan errors. I've uninstalled HP after 3 futile reloads and disconnected the printer.
    Any suggestions?
    Lis
Right 10.7 is a purchase of a new oeprating system. Software update will not upgrade your computer to 10.7.
The Software on the disk is very old software. Ushally it's a good idea to download the latest software from HP. As such, have you tried downloading & Installing HP Deskjet Full Feature Software and Drivers - Mac OS X v10.5 and v10.6?
You may need to go into system prefrences, Printers, and delete the printer, and then re-add the printer.
When opening the scanning software; it's really important to open the right program. If you look in the HP software folder there should be sevreal programs. There should be a program called scanner select or some thing similar. That's the one you want to open. it will have you select the device you want to scan from; then it will give you the option to open the scanning program.
if that dosen't work, do you have any other mac or pc computers? the reason I ask; is that the printer could be having a hardware issue. if you try the scanner / printer with another computer; and you still have the issue, then you know it's an issue with the printer it self and not your computer.
My HP all-in-one scanner died about 8 months into owning it. I couldn't even use the built-in copy button on the printer to make copies.

  • Beginners Guide sound installation -- OSS and ALSA objective features

Beginners Guide sound installation -- OSS and ALSA objective features needed
    Hi,
In most wiki pages i just edit the things that i think need editing. Just look at the oss history
In all those cases i didn't really saw a need to ask for permission.. that would kinda destroy the wiki idea.
However i want to change the sound instructions in the beginners guide so i made a copy of the entire guide and the part that i changed there is: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Use … ling_Sound now i have a slight issue there. As you can see i'm in favor of OSS and because you can spot that it's not objective. Now i would ask 2 things.
    1. Could you all post your features of OSS and ALSA
    2. Once that's done can i have permission to place that section in the beginners guide? that will also include removing the sound installation from the beginners guide which i already did in my version
My personal reason to do this. i've read this  and am since then pro OSS and against the ALSA/PulseAudio combo. i think that combo needs to get out of linux (most notably Fedora and Ubuntu) ASAP. and oss needs to go back into the linux kernel
    Thank you for your time,
    Mark

I'm an alsa/pulse user, so I'll give a bit of the 'other side'.
    Alsa/pulse
    Pros:-
    network sound
advanced connection of sink/source (including merging sinks)
    bluetooth support!
highly supported by existing apps, either through directly supporting Pulse or through its alsa plugin (you should not need to recompile properly-written apps which do not assume they should write audio data directly to hardware, I think I only needed to recompile mpd on my system)
    Cons:-
Setup isn't the easiest. Can't comment vs OSS4 because I haven't tried it
    OSS4
    Pros:-
Everyone seems to say sound quality is better. I guess that's because they're comparing it with dmix alsa. Use pulse with alsa and you should not notice any difference in sound quality though.
    Cons:-
Most apps nowadays default output to alsa. Meaning OSS plays them using an alsa plugin.
    USB support is admittedly skimpy.
EDIT: Having read the sound article you referred to, my only comment is that the writer really has it in for Pulse... 3 seconds latency, where'd he get that from? I use pulse for audio recording (when I'm lazy to fire up JACK) and while there IS latency, its definitely in the ms range.
    Thanx for the input

    markg85, libflashsupport isn't needed. [1]
pacman -Ql oss | grep flash
If you don't know, please don't put in wiki, this could cause unnecessary problems.  As for the mms section:
If your stream sounds ugly in totem like it did with me then you could try to play it with another codec like ffmpeg (mplayer). That "fixed" the issue for me. This will not fix the issue that somehow pops up in gstreamer when playing MMS streams but it will give you the option to play it with good sound quality. Playing it in mplayer is simple:
    # mplayer mmsh://yourstreamurl
Could you fix this?  ffmpeg is not a codec .  Also define ugly, and what is somehow?
markg85 wrote:Thanx a lot for your feedback. i will certainly use it when i make more edits.
As for the things you didn't know. As soon as i fully understand how i can get a microphone working in OSS i will add that to the wiki as well. Unless you already know it.. in that case, feel free to add it.
For the mic, I did get mine going.  Can't remember just how I did mine (sorry, think I had to disable one of the inputs),  but do remember to prevent it from passing through the speakers had to disable "Misc Microphone".

For libflashsupport on the same page you linked it clearly states:
    #  Flash V9 and V10 require libflashsupport to output sound via OSS. Typically a 32-bit version of the library is required.
    # Flash V10 has a 64-bit version which requires a 64 bit libflashsupport.
Also i tested it with and without libflashsupport. On archlinux (x64 running here) there most certainly is a need for libflashsupport when you want to have sound in your flash. And yes i tested the archlinux OSS version and the mercurial version (running now) bith need it  installed manually! On my pc sound in flash didn't work without it but did with it. So, no not removing from the wiki as it's needed. But i see you removed it for me! please do NOT do that if you didn't even verified it. I use flash 10 x64 and i need it!
As for the ffmpeg "codec" changed it to backend.
And i did get the microphone working near perfect: http://www.4front-tech.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=13192
Now for some news you all might like.
On my school i need to do an investigation to whatever i want and i'm heavily thinking about investigating the pros/cons of alsa compared to oss (or oss compared to alsa). That investigation will take from monday next week till next mondey till friday 23 of oktober. In that investigation i'm going to do some in depth look of alsa and oss and that will include the usability as well.
Following up on that investigation i will spend another 8 weeks on my school making a volume control application that can be used with alsa and oss and easily expandable with other sound systems. The goal of this is to make one sound application that can manage (in the first place) alsa and oss. oss is going to be implemented and alsa is probably going to be dummy implemented because it's likely way to much for me to implement both.
Before you get to exited, both projects (investigating and making the application) are just made up today and i just don't know if both will get accepted by my school. I asked one teacher and he liked the idea a lot and could potentially have a value for the sound management under linux. Once i do get this started i will involve the community (YOU!) with this since this project can't be done without the community specially the investigation.
And once i start and have something to tell/ask i will blog about it on http://blog.mageprojects.com
    edit::
And this idea already got dumped. read more a few posts down or click: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 34#p612634
