Hi stixx
Welcome to Apple Discussions
Instead of using sunglasses for your eyes, use Shades on your iMac.

  • Does anyone like their new iMac screen?????

I am going to be recommending a new imac for some friends and wanted to know if there is anyone that likes the new screens on their iMac?
I know only people with problems post on here, but just wanted to see if there are any happy iMac users.
    thanks in advance

For the past 4 years, I've been using the Powerbook G4 laptop and I prefer the matte screen display. When I saw the new iMacs, the only thing I didn't like was the glossy screen, but everything else was awesome about the iMac. In the end, I decided that the glossy screen wasn't SO bad. The only time it's really irritating is during daytime when the light reflects off the screen. Since my iMac is in my bedroom, I can just pull down the blinds and it'll shield the sunlight from 'attacking' my iMac glossy screen. Or, you can increase the screen brightness, and it helps take away the reflections.. not 100%, but most of it.
I've gotten used to the glossy screen now, and yes, it does make my Powerbook G4 screen look quite dull. Haha. I still use my G4 for school purposes, so it's not going into the can just yet...
Yeah, that's my take on the screen. So, yes, I do like the new iMac screen.

  • New Imac screen flicker when dimmed down

Hi guys, I got my new Imac about a week ago, aside from the whistling and dead pixels in the isight, are any of you guys getting screens that are sort of flickering when you start to dim them down. The light dims and filckers very quickly. It's kind of looks like the old CRT's at a slow refresh rate and is becoming really annoying. I was wondering if this is normal for all the Imacs. I'll be getting a replacement because of the dead pixels in my Isight, but this will also be something to look for in the new one. So it'll be good to know if it is normal.

Well, this is definitely a hardware defect and it appears to be wide spread. I took my iMac back to the Apple store today and the Tech saw the problem too and exchanged it for a new one (since it was within 14 days). Well, got that one home, and it had the same flicker issue. Two hours later back at the Apple Store, they saw the issue with the replacement machine too, but not with any of their floor models. So, they took that one back too and are doing a writeup to send it back to Apple so they can diagnose the problem.
The replacement iMac they brought out for me this time we setup in the store and confirmed did not have the display flicker issue when the backlight was all the way down.
So my suggestion is if you have this issue, take it into the Apple Store and have them replace it or repair it.

  • New iMac: Screen Issues and Noisy Hard Drive

    Hello,
I'm writing regarding my new 27" iMac which I purchased just under a week ago (spec: 3.1GHz Intel Core i5, 1TB HDD, 4GB RAM).
When I got my iMac home and unboxed it, all was fine, however once I had began to install some applications and use them, I noticed an unusual issue with the screen. I had a Skype window open on the left hand side of my screen, with an ongoing chat, Obviously, the chat 'stream' was moving, but the menu items on the far left remained the same. The iMac had been on for about 10mins, with the Skype window open for the same duration. After which, I opened iPhoto, and made it full screen, filling my screen with a dark grey background. I could still see the outline of the text from my Skype window through the iPhoto window. Thinking the window may have been semi-transparent, I closed the Skype window, however when I re-fullscreened iPhoto, the test was still there, as if it was burnt into the screen.
I understand the concept of screen burn, but surely this shouldn't happen after just 10mins? It's nothing permanent, as it fades away again within another 5mins or so, but it is annoying knowing that I can't leave a window open for very long without worrying I will have text burnt into my screen for a period of time. As a graphic designer, I could be working on images that are dark, and likewise, I don't want to see remains of my chat or emails over the top of my design work.
Has anyone else had this issue? Is this an issue that can be repaired by myself (eg. installing a firmware update, although I have all the latest updates from Software Update)? Or should I just return my iMac to the store and get them to look at it? I'm worried that if I take it back, they may fail to see the issue, as the lighing is a lot different in the store to at home.
The other issue I am experiencing is I have a very noisy hard drive, that seems to click and make a grumbling noise rather a lot. Obviously at times when the computer is working hard, this is to be expected (I think), although most of the time it is grumbling away whilst I'm just browsing in Safari with one tab open.
Has anyone else experienced this issue, taken it back and has a successful replacement? I've read that it could be to do with Mac OS X Lion, because people have reported that their hard drive ran silently on Snow Leopard but has got noisier with Lion. Should I wait for a Lion update before returning it? Other than the issues above, everything is fine.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I look forward to someone being able to shine some light on my issues.

    Thanks for the advice.
Today, I returned my iMac to the Apple Premium Resellers where I purchased it. The helpful chap there looked at my screen and acknowledged the issue, before giving me a brand new iMac.
My previous model came with Snow Leopard pre-installed, which I upgraded to Lion. This new, second iMac is a relatively new one as it has Lion pre-installed. Feeling hopeful, I've just arrived home and unpackaged my new computer.
The result? EXACTLY the same issue. My Twitter window on the far left of my display has been open for no longer than about 7 or 8 mins, and I can clearly see the display pictures from my follwees burnt into the screen when I full screen a dark app like Snow Leopard.
I'm wondering whether this is a Lion issue? Should I wait for a software update before returning it again? It's not something that's going to be annoying on a day-to-day basis, but now that I know it's doing it, I can't help but keep checking when I open iPhoto.
PEOPLE WITH NEW 27" iMAC's: Would you please perform the following test for me and let me know the results?
    1. Open up a white backgrounded application, such as Twitter, Skype, or Safari.
    2. Leave it on screen (anywhere, but far left seems to be worst) for about 5 to 10mins.
    3. Open up iPhoto with it's grey full screen background, or set your wallpaper to a flat colour dark grey.
    4. Now minimise the white backgrounded windows, and switch to a grey background with no windows in front of it.
    5. Look carefully at your screen: can you still see an outline of/text from the window in the position that it was, like it's burnt into the screen?
Thanks in advance to anyone that can perform this for me.

  • Need advice: slight defect on new Imac screen, what would you do?

I just got new Imac from apple online store and I noticed that there is a small defect in screen. It is about 1/4 or just a bit smaller inch line that looks like hair. I am not too pleased about it. What would you do?
ps, i had this shipped from online store, so do I take it back to apple for new one since still within 14 days. Not sure how it works if you purchased online.
    thanks

I would ring them up - if you bought it online I'm not sure if you can return it to a store, although if it's one that they sell in store you might. I changed the spec on mine so couldn't return to a store when I had a problem and got it replaced. They'll send a new one out express delivery and arrange for a courier to pick the old one up. I managed to arrange it so the new one arrived the same day as they picked up the old one.

  • HELP!!! new iMac. screen shifts side to side and i can't use mouse when this happens.

i bought this imac back in january and have had nothing but problems since then with it. first my OS (lion 10.7.4) crashed or some **** where i got extremely slow and would give me the colored wheel of death so i take it to worst but where i bought it and they say its a corupt hard drive so its sent out. get it back, they say it whats the os system so they re-boot the os on to it. mean while i was having the same problem ive have from the beginning which was the screen would shake side to side when ever i would be doing something and the mouse locks up and i would have to wait for it to stop. this is VERY ANOYING!!! i took it to apple and they ran a series of stress tests on it and they couldnt even get it to produce it once while they had it. so now its STILL doing it!  can anyone please help me. im ready to go to apple and demand a new computer or punch someone in the face...

    I'm speaking from experience.
You're using a wireless Magic Mouse right?  Yeah, thought so.
I first noticed the problem on Lion (10.7.5) but that was also the time my Mighty Mouse or whatever that thing was called crapped out and I upgraded to the Magic Mouse.  I always thought the problem was with the OS.  My system is not supported by Mountain Lion (late 2006 model, the white one) so I did a system reinstall and stil had the issue.  Being stupid, I still attributed it to the OS but had my doubts about the mouse with all the silly swipes here and there and everywhere.  Until today.  I said enough of this garbage and switched off the mouse and plugged in a beat up wired Logitech.  Going on 4 hours now and not one screen shake.
The "iMac screen shake".  Not very well documented.  But **** if that isn't one frustrating mofo.  Seriously, how did I use this thing for many moons with the screen shaking every 3-5 minutes.  ***??   And by the way, to stop the screen from shaking while it's doing it, madly swipe back and forth on the magic mouse shell to take control back.  Man, I'm getting upset just thinking about this problem.  And the waste of $70 for the mouse.
And for what it's worth, I bought an iMac (2010) for my folks and I've noticed the problem on their machine too.  Yep, Magic Mouse.

  • New iMac screens - LED backlit?

Just as title really, are they LED backlit or is that the realm of laptops only at the mo?

    They aren't LED backlit.
Steve spoke extensively about how the glass and aluminium can be recycled, pushing the "green" angle.
He didn't mention LED backlighting, and he certainly would have if these new iMacs had that.
Also, there is no mention of LED backlighting in the tech specs.
So it's still just the 15" Macbook Pro.

  • New iMac Screen Connection

I currently own 2x 23" Apple Cinema Displays and am thinking about getting a new iMac. Would I be able to connect both of these to the iMac or would I need to get a Mac Pro?

    Hi Whealey,
the iMacs can only drive one external display (in addidtion to the one internal).
    So that makes already two.
Only the Mac Pro is capable of connecting two (and with addidtional graphics cards) or more external displays.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Brand New iMac Screen With Moisture : (

I just bought 24" iMac and it was all covered up and brand new but after few seconds I noticed on bottom right edge of the screen some sort of fog or moisture! Please no not on my first Mac!!!
I'm really disappointed and I know it's probably happened on the way of shipping because I'm located in Asia (Qatar). Just called the apple store in here and I'm really sure they'll take it a way for a week and I hate the idea of having this iMac opened up in here because I know it will come back not 100% like before! please can someone tell me is there a way to replace it? just the screen I'll keep the rest of the stuff please help.

Is the moisture just on the back of the glass front panel? That cab be removed with a large suction cup (it is held by magnets) then cleaned.

  • Dirty Black Blotches inside my brand new iMac screen, behind the glass

My brand new 21 inch iMac has some blotches in the screen. I didn't notice at first because my wallpaper is very colorful and has some blotch designs on it, but I opened a textedit document and the blotches are very visible on the plain white background. I tried wiping the surface of the glass with the cloth that comes in the iMac box only to discover that the blotch marks are BEHIND the glass!
Please HELP! :-O I tried calling the 1-800 apple support number for my country (Philippines) but the number doesn't work or is not supported by my phone company or mobile phone company. I took a picture of the defects and was hoping to email it to apple, but I cannot find a proper support email address on the apple.com site. Is there a way to attach them to this forum thread? It is quite frustrating and I don't know what to do.
What steps should I take to remedy this?

Contact Apple's Express Lane. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine.

  • New iMac screen extremly reflective

I just got my new 24" iMac delivered and set up. I was extremely happy with it till i went to do my first round of editing on some photos. I found the screen very reflective and quite annoying while trying to edit. Is there a good anti-glare screen that would cut out the reflections?
I'm just starting a photography business and this is my second iMac, the first was in the plastic casing and was a great computer and the screen was excellent.

This seems to be a good solution:
    http://www.photodon.com/c/PF.html
I'm not sure if I like the glossy screen either. It makes the computer itself look nicer and of a higher build quality and Apple touts it as being so eco-friendly (even thought it's just the same underneath the glass, but it can be distracting.
The antiglare film from that company seems to be what most people offer as the solution. The only problem I can see with it is that the contrast is lowered (highlights darken and shadows lighten).

  • Is there a way to turn the new iMac screen off while running a song?

I know the key command is shift control eject-- and it works-- but only for a few seconds. Does anybody know how to turn the screen off so that it will stay off for any serious period of time?
I used to do this in my g5 by just turning the monitor off. great to trick to ensure that i'm listening to a mix w/ my ears--- not my eyes.
    thank you

Thank you for all the responses.
I've tried the black cloth. it's okay-- but i wind up have to attach something to the iMac--- and my clients are very sensitive to the things look here. i think it's petty-- but whatever. Also-- i have to constantly be taking it on/off as i make ajustments.
As far as turning around goes-- this is okay. I've tried it. the thing is-- your the way your ears receive sound-- is significantly different when you turn around. not drastically-- but again-- i'm talking about slight adjustments anyhow. any little difference can throw things off.
And the idea of a screen saver-- well-- here's the thing: when i'm trying to think only of music-- i don't even want to have to look at a computer screen. Imagine if you owned a nice pioneer 1970's stereo receiver and killer set of speakers. But everytime you were listening to it-- you had to look at a some sort of computer image. just not that pleasant.
comfort is pretty important to me at this point and that's kind of the whole goal. to still sit where i sit, look where i look, but not have to see a lit display on a computer screen.
i will try the hot corner thing.
thank you all for your responses.

  • How to clean the new imac screen

i have no cleaning anything and i smugged the computer screen with the cleaning cloth it came with what is a good thing to clean it with?

Hi....that link specifically applies to mid-late 2007 iMacs. What about cleaning the iMacs from earlier (last year)? There must be some other way since they specify the type of iMac in the link???
    Thanks

  • My brand new iMac screen goes black intermittently...

Hi - I bought my 27" iMac about 3 months ago and pretty much since I got it occassionaly the screen goes black. I'll be working away and all of a sudden it goes black. After a few seconds it comes back on, but this can't be good? I asked my local computer guy and he said it was a known issue due to safari and not to use safari. That seemed to fix it but A) I like Safari and B) it's started happening now even when I'm not in Safari. Any ideas?
    iMac 3.4GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB ram, Graphics  AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB, OS X 10.8.2

I asked my local computer guy and he said it was a known issue due to safari and not to use safari.
That's ridiculous. Take it in for warranty service.
