Blinking connection of death

I've had my extreme base station for a month now. I like the speed I like the ease but about twice a day my connection drops in and out for about four minutes at a time. My signal strength up top reads full then two seconds later none. Two seconds later full, then two seconds gone. This is a real pain and only happens on the wifi my ethernet connection remains just fine.
I've tried googling this, I've looked around the forum but I can't find exactly anyone else matching my problem? It has suggested to me that this is a firmware problem but if no one else has this happen then it can't really be a issue that everyone must have.
I have no microwaves, cellphones, nuclear reactors, or power lines near my base station.
I do have WPA (the one requiring a word to log in) I've seen people say on this discussion site go to WEP. Is this something that should be done?
Thanks for any help in advance

kwjayhawk, Welcome to the discussion area!
I've seen people say on this discussion site go to WEP. Is this something that should be done?
Not sure how you came to that conclusion but the answer is NO. While WPA is secure, WEP is pretty easily cracked.
Using either should have no affect on the reliability of the connection.
More than likely you are experiencing RF interference. If you are operating at 2.4 GHz, try changing the channel used by your AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). If you are operating at 5 GHz try changing to 2.4 GHz.

  • X220 Windows 7 x64 Pro Blinking Cursor of Death

Currently, when I start my X220 it won't boot to Windows 7. Instead, it just sits at a blinking cursor in the top-left hand corner. The keyboard is alive (i.e. I can get a response out of CapLock and NumLock).
Here is the tragedy of today, told in as few words as possible.
    1. Installed Comodo Disk Encryption and encrypted primary drive (Windows7_OS).
    2. System Rebooted to blinking cursor of death (but no response from CapLock and NumLock)
    3. Played with a lot of BIOS settings, eventually reset to System Defaults because they didn't get me anywhere.
    4. Removed HDD and installed into SATA->USB enclosure, attached drive to my Dell Workstation.
    5. Using Comodo installed on the Dell Workstation, I mounted and unencrypted the drive.
    6. Reintalled HDD into laptop, problem persists.
I assume I've wrecked my MBR in some way and I can't reload it to the Lenovo magic MBR. Currently, Disk Manager of the Dell sees three partitions:
    1. SYSTEM_DRV -- Healthy (Active, Primary Partition)
    2. Windows7_OS (G -- Healthy (Primary Partition)
    3. Lenovo_Recovery (H -- Healthy (Primary Partition)
Obviously, these drive letters are G + H because its being mounted on my dell currently.
Any suggestions? I'm sort of at a loss here. I can download generic tools to repair the MBR, but I've read that this won't help me. F11/ThinkVantage doesn't work.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Won't Boot -- Blinking PowerLED of Death

    Hi,
So I was upgrading the RAM on my Mac Pro and now the computer won't boot. It turns on and all I get is the blinking power LED. It's blinking once per second. I know that typically this means that the RAM isn't seated correctly. So I have reseated the RAM at least 10 times now. I have also tried taking out the new ram, and using the standard RAM that came with the computer, still not booting. I've tried swapping the riser cards. I've tried booting with just one riser card and alternating the slots and which card; still no boot. I have checked the seating on the harddrives, and the video card and anything else I can see. Still not booting. I've tried booting with a single ram stick in every slot, and even tried the same thing with all four sticks of ram; still nothing. I have also tried pressing the SMC RST button, no help.
*NOTE 1: When I turn on the computer, all four red LEDs on the riser card(s) light up for a second and then turn off.
*NOTE 2: When the power is on and I press the DIAG LED button, I get this only: TRICKLE - Orange, PWR ON- Green.
I guess my question is: where's the problem? Is there any way I can definitively tell if it's the riser card(s)? Is there a way I can just check the ram itself? How can I check to make sure it's not the logic board? Any help in what I should check would be greatly appreciated.

This problem also happened to me. Last week, I awoke to the blinking power light... Tried rebooting and no luck. Several times.
I read this thread and thought I would try swapping the memory around.
It worked! My MacPro is back to life - I was upset because it meant a trip to the Apple support center... Even though I live in Mexico City and there are the Authorized Apple Service Centers I'm glad I tried this before packing it up for observation. I can only conclude that this may happen again so for now let's hope all is well... and at best a temporary glitch. The odd part is that this happened two days after I moved my hardware to another location. I though perhaps a power surge occurred and tweaked the hardware.

  • PS3 Wireless Connection is deathly slow (if it works at all..)

I bought a PS3 (fat 40GB version) today and have been trying to set it up, connect it to wifi, etc. so that I can download the games I've paid for using the Playstation Store on the PC. However, the connection is ridiculously slow.
I'm with Telstra and using a Technicolor TG797 modem. I have a few laptops connected, all getting a DL speed of 6mbps and upload of 500kbps.
I've tried port forwarding, enabling and disabling uPNP, entering 6 or 7 different DNS servers etc., nothing works so far. I had to try five or six times just to get it to log in to the PSN (it kept saying connection timed out or "DNS error" (no matter which DNS I had entered) and now it's been downloading the 54MB PS Store app for more than an hour, creeping up 1% every minute or so. The Internet settings speed test said I was getting a 3.5mbps connection, so the slowness is just ridiculous.
Anyone got any other suggestions as to how I can fix it?

The PS3 has a really outdated and slow wireless G nework so it's not that fast to start with,I would strongly recommend a wired connection. If you can't go wired because of distance to your router have a look online for power line network adaptors AKA homeplugs they give you the next best thing to a wired connection and certainly better than wireless.
Coupled with a Technicolor router formerly known as Thomson and Inventel they are well known for poor performance and reliability you will struggle to get a half decent speed over wireless.
Even my fairly decent speeds wireless v wired is a night and day difference.
    Wired.
    Wireless.

  • WRTU54G-TM Blinking Power Button

I just signed up for T-Mobile @Home service that included a Linksys WRTU54G-TM router. I got it at 10:00am this morning. After setting everything up, everything was working fine. I was able to browse the internet and check e-mail on my desktop (connected via cable). However, when I tried to connect my laptop (wireless) I couldn't connect because of incorrect security credentials. SO I unplugged the router (to just restart it) and plugged it back in. BUT now the power button in constantly blinking and I cannot ping the router or get to the router's startup page (192.168.0.1). I spent 3 hours unplugging, holding down reset button, letting it blink itself to death... Then I decided to return the router to T-Mobile and got another one. Everything worked fine - except for when I set security settings (WPA-Personal 2) my laptop saw an unsecured network. So me, in my infinite wisdom unplugged the router and ... AGAIN, Im stuck with a blinking power light and no way to ping the router or anything. Holding down reset button does NOTHING. Please help!!! -Paul

Well if the power light is blinking on the router then try resetting the router for 1 complete minute & then do a complete network power cycle & check if the light is not solid green try another power adapter if you have & check out if it works fine....if not then if its a new router replace it back to store.

  • TS1440 I'm trying to fix the "Blinking Grey Folder" issue, but for some reason my MBP won't accept my internet password, how do I advance past this?

I've got an early 2011 Macbook Pro running the latest OS, but this afternoon it decided to not start properly, and I was faced with the blinking folder of death. Having googled around the subject a bit, it seems the thing to do is boot and hold the option key, then do a few things to sort it if its sortable. However, its asking for my network, and the password. For some reason, it is completely rejecting the password, even though I know thats the correct one (I'm using it now for instance!).
So how do I move this forward? I'd rather not have to buy a new MBP, but its looking like it might be necessary at this stage, as I need a laptop for my work! I've tried to book into a London apple store, but there are no free slots at any of them.

If you are experiencing this in the Safe Mode, sometimes Wi-Fi won't work in the Safe Mode.

Do you have a current backup? Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then reinstall the OS.

  • WRT54GS wireless drop and Blinking Power-LED (V6, 1.52.5)

Hi all, Trawling several pages with people mentioning dropping wireless connectivity, I didn't notice a symptom I've noticed on mine: since the troubles started I've got the router located very close by (as in less than 3 feet/ 1 meter). One thing I happened to notice that every once in a while the Cicso loge and Power LED start blinking: connectivity is completely gone, also wired. After some time (30 sec?) the lights come on again and connectivity is restored. I haven't noticed any correlation (yet) to wireless connectivity, but it's quite irritating. Anybody any ideas?

well sounds like you have a defective device.....
tried reflashing firmware, if still not working, try calling Linksys and get an RMA #

  • Installing Yosemite on Mac Pro Early 2008

I seem to be having a problem installing Yosemite on my Mac Pro, 2008. This computer is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, fully up to date. I checked Apple's website to check compatibility and I am understanding my machine is compatible. When I go onto the app store, I get a window saying "OS X 10.10 is not compatible with this system."
    The system contains:
2 x 2.66 Dual Core Intel Xeon Processor (Quad Core)
8 GB Ram DDR2 ECC      (Does it need to be DDR3?)
    Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
    NVIDIA GeForce 120 512 GDDR3
    750GB HDD
    10.6.8 Snow Leopard
I own a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina (15" i7 2.3ghz, GeForce 750) and I connected my laptop to the Mac Pro VIA FireWire 800 (used thunderbolt adapter) and set the Mac Pro into "Target Disk Mode" and used the Yosemite installer and installed it to the HDD on the Mac Pro, but when I booted up the Mac Pro (after it installed), I got the blinking folder of death (Instead of Apple logo, flashing folder with question mark). At this point I had to use the Snow Leopard install disk, and start the Mac Pro using the disk, wipe the HDD and reinstall Snow Leopard and go back to phase one.
Please let me know what I can do.
    Thanks!

You said "2 x 2.66 Dual Core Intel Xeon Processor (Quad Core)"
Do you really have a two dual-core processors? If so then you do not have a 2008 Mac Pro. The 20 came with qual core processors. If you click on the Apple icon in upper right and select About This Mac what model Maac is listed? A 2008 is 3.1. A 2006 is 1.1 and 2007 is 2.1. Only the 2008 and later can go to higher than Lion without a hack

  • Restore iBook 700 mhz?

I have a completely dead G3 iBook. 12 inch Dual USB 700 MHZ With Fire Wire, and it is White. It looks almost identical to the White 1.33 ghz iBook G4 I have. (if this helps you figure out which dead G3 iBook I am talking about)
I got it on ebay for the purpose of Mac OS 9.2.2 as the primary OS and I want to boot from that OS.
The listing said that it has Mac OS 9 on it.
When I started it, it had OS X Tiger "Welcome and Setup" with no Mac OS 9 at all.
I was familiar with the Copy The Mac OS 9 System Folder(s) but I must have done that wrong. The next thing that happened was the Blinking Question Mark Of Death.
BEFORE YOU READ MORE, you might want to know my question, which is: I need a Mac OS 9 Install CD. But these are getting impossible to find, so I want to expand my search. Can I include Restore CDs that have Mac OS 9 on them? What if they are for example Power Mac G4? I have seen compatibility charts with these Restore Discs, AND I know it is not recommended, but I have purchased a Tiger Restore DVD for a G4, and the listing said it is compatible with ETC. including a Blue & White G3, a imac G3 Slot, which installed successfully. The iMac installation I can't remember but I think I installed it through Fire Wire by connecting a Desktop DVD Player to a Fire Wire Adapter (which I don't have the adapter anymore) So ... Will the wrong Mac OS 9 Restore CD absolutely not work?  I can't find my Mac OS 9 Installation CD or my Mac OS 9 Restore CD (which is grey and says "iBook" on it, presumably for a Clam Shell) BUT I still have my Tiger G4 Restore DVD. Is it possible to boot from a Fire Wire DVD Drive to the ibook g3 so I can install Tiger on it? Or even to try to select a Startup Volume? And, even if I can successfully install Tiger to the dead iBook, ... How would I install Mas OS 9?
Here are the rest of the details if you need them:
Booting while pressing OPTION revealed no Startup Folder for Mac OS 9 or Tiger.
I connected a Fire Wire from the dead ibook to a 366 mhz Clam Shell with 9.2.2 and successfully loaded Target Disk Mode. Both Startup Folders for the "External" hard drive appeared. Selecting either resulted in the Blinking Question Mark Of Death.
I then deleted Mac OS 9 on the dead ibook and then recopied it. When I disconnected the Fire Wire this time, I got the other Blinking Question Mark Of Death, on a diskette with no purple folder. Pressing OPTION revealed no internal startup disk, but instead it displayed the ClamShell's startup disk!
I am not sure how "Install Mac OS 9 Drivers" work, but perhaps the person I bought it from may not have selected Install Mac OS 9 Drivers. I am not sure what they did, or how they were able to install Tiger, because this iBook only has a CD not a DVD drive. I decided to worry about Tiger later and so I erased the drive using Mac OS 9.2.2's "Erase Disk" and selected "Extended". I then copied the folders, beginning with System Folder, then Application Folder, Then Users, Then Documents,
Still connected to the Clam Shell with Target Disk Mode, I opened Startup Disk again and the Mac OS 9.2.2 appeared with the name of the "external" hard drive. This time I booted successfully from it, although it was through the Clam Shell.
I tried to boot the dead iBook, but the same Blinking Question Mark Diskette Of Death appeared.
I selected OPTION. And the name of the dead iBook's hard drive appeared.
It still displays the Blinking Question Of Death.
I have tried everything else. I have disconnected the power and the battery. There is no reset button so I tried COMMAND OPTION P R, SHIFT OPTION CONTROL POWER, and even COMMAND OPTION OPEN FIRMWARE reset-all.
I asked on another website and they suggested I just use Target Disk Mode and a cloning software to clone a hard drive to the dead ibook. The only Mac OS X that I have is still on an imac G3 which has a CRT Monitor. It has 1 GB RAM but only 400 mhz. When plugging in the imac I think the CRT Monitor Voltage zapped the ibook hard drive to oblivion. Because now the
dead ibook g3 won't appear on Target Disk Mode connected to any computer, using either OS 9 or Tiger.
I can still press OPTION which still displays an available startup volume on the internal ibook hard drive. but clicking the --> continues to do nothing except still show the Blinking Question Mark Diskette Of Death.
Am I handling the OPTION wrong? Do I need to actually click on the icon before pressing the --> ?
Should I get a Fire Wire adapter to boot the DVD? Will using the wrong Restore Disc make things even worse? Does Target Disk Mode not working anymore mean that the hard drive is zapped?

One of the first things regarding an eBay purchase that appears to be not as represented by the seller, is to contact the seller to inquire about such things which are not as they were said; since this detracts from the value of the purchase.
System discs, original software, restore discs, and official copies of the media which represents the license to have and use the OS materials on the computer hard disk drive, should be included.
    {To get copies of OS 9.1/9.2, etc can be difficult, and the original gray label discs had the correct content. Some could be used, but not recommended, since certain drivers for hardware could be lacking, and other regions of error may result.}
There are a few great places online to buy a repaired, restored, &/or refurbished Apple portable computer, with a limited guaranty, from companies who repair them for a living. Without the risk of an auction seller who does not know the equipment, its real condition (or does not specify, etc) and with the buyer getting a fair value. And those would include an OS & system backup on DVD media; plus a power adapter, battery, etc.
So at this hour (2AM here) I will not address your questions; I do hope that some of the Community (of Apple users who reply to these posts) will see the iBook section and offer some tangible advice. There are at least three posts in this vintage area that have a similar theme; need software to use the computer that was just bought.
At a more reasonable hour, I may be able to look back into this.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • What's wrong with networking since Leopard?

    Hi,
I'm with Mac since years. I was a PC User once and spent hours with all kinds of network troubles. What convinced me with Mac right in the beginning was easy networking: It just worked!
But since Leopard things got worse: I have several MBP's, iMacs, Airport Extreme's and Airport Express's at different places which I installed, and I face the same problems at EVERY place:
    - I can't connect to AExtreme for several reasons: timeout, security incompatibility, ...
    - Sometimes only two Macs are allowed to connect to one AExtreme
    - Airport doesn't find Aiport or any other networks for minutes
    - After connecting to the router, can't get an IP (self-assigned IP only) - other PCs get an IP.
    - Aiport Extreme crashes (yellow blinking)
    - connection loss (even when AExtreme is very close)
Now I know about networking, about configuration, I've done this for years. Whatever I do, problems disappear and appear again, at different times, at different places with different hardware.
What is wrong with Leopard? Such problems remind me of times with Windows98 and stuff like that.

What's wrong with networking since Leopard?
on my network and many i have setup there have been no problems with leopard. However there are always teething problems with new operating systems. Thankfully with leopard only a tiny percentage of users experience technical difficulties.
can't connect to AExtreme for several reasons: timeout, security incompatibility,
is it set to use WPA/WPA2
Airport doesn't find Aiport or any other networks for minutes
sometimes my macbook pro takes a while to show up any networks if there are lots in the area this is because it is scanning them all.
After connecting to the router, can't get an IP (self-assigned IP only) - other PCs get an IP.
What kind of router are you using? What happens if you powercycle the router?
    # Aiport Extreme crashes (yellow blinking)
    # connection loss (even when AExtreme is very close)
Have you tried resetting your AE to default. reinstalling its firmware or checking for a firmware update?
Have you tried changing hte wireless channel your networ is broadcasting on?

Did you upgrade install your leopard installation or did you do clean (erase) installations?

  • Safari 2.0.3 not displaying buttons or pictures

On many web sites, Safari doesn't display buttons or clickable images on web pages. I have checked the "display images when the page opens" preference item. I have tried emptying the cache and resetting safari and deleting the com.apple.safari.plist file. I know the buttons are there since with the appropriate preference set I can toggle through them, and they are all there on another Mac using Safari 2.0.2 on the same network.

(I'm jumping in here as a newbie to Apple's discussions, so please forgive me if my posting etiquette is lacking and feel free to educate me accordingly.)
I have been looking for weeks for the answer to Joe Veranth's problem because I am having the EXACT same issues with images not loading on sites that previously loaded perfectly. I am on a G5 running OS 10.4.6 and Safari 2.0.3. I am not behind a firewall. (Note: these problems are not occurring for me at work, where I run a G4 with the same OS and Safari versions. All the settings are exactly the same.) I have tried resetting Safari, changing settings for blocking/not blocking popups, loading images when page is called, trashing Safari prefs, etc. No luck.
I just tried andyBall_uk's advise and eliminated all my internet plugins, then restarted Safari. Nothing changed. Still no images. Even Apple's home page isn't loading right.
I cannot positively connect the death of my Safari images with any particular update or download. I do know it's gotten progressively worse over the last weeks. I am suspecting the latest OS security update may have had an effect. Comments?
Sorry so long-winded, but I want Joe and anyone else experiencing this to know you are not alone. If anyone figures this out your are a hero.
Until then, Firefox is the way to go.

  • Quiz Question Reporting Incorrect in Outline Pane when Correct

    Example 1
When a question within a quiz has Report Score "un-checked", the score for the question is greater than zero, and the user clicks the correct question, the correct feedback is displayed in the content area and a green check is displayed next to the question in the Outline pane.
    Example 2
When a question within a quiz has Report Score "un-checked", the score for the question is zero, and the user clicks the correct question, the correct feedback is displayed in the content area and a red X is displayed next to the question in the Outline pane.
    Example 3
When a question within a quiz has Report Score "check", the score for the question is zero, and the user clicks the correct question, the correct feedback is displayed in the content area and a red X is displayed next to the question in the Outline pane.
For example 2 and 3, is this the correct behavior?  Why is a red X displaying next to the question in the outline pane when the question has been answered correctly?  I have been able to duplicate this across several courses created on several different PCs.

    Thanks!

The more I work, the more problems I discover.
    1. Content Assist is usually dead. If I press ctrl+space to call it up, I get an error beep.
    2. It isn't catching some of the errors in my code. For example, I had written a call to a nonexistant function, but that did not show in the Problems pane.
    3. Still getting occasional " unknown item is declared as the root" errors as noted above. Sometimes clicking the refresh button will make it go away and design mode will function normally, but it comes back the next time I switch back to that component.
    4. It doesn't recognize anything within a class I built - can't tell if the public properties and methods are being seen or not. (may be connected to death of code hinting/Content Assist?)
    5. When it does find an error, the Path column is blank so I have no idea which file it is in.
I have "cleaned" the project several times, with no improvement.
If any of you can please help me get my FB3 restored to its prior working condition I would be very grateful.
    Thanks.

  • Ibook damage

    Hello everyone
I have recently purchased an ibook G3 (cheap), with known damage and I have a few questions. First, apparently, the person who owned it, her dog got caught up in the cord and it fell onto a slate floor and dragged across it. After that mishap, the hinge was bent on the screen and it powers up but only has a blinking folder/question mark and nothing else. I dont have this in my possession yet, but I have taken ibook apart before so thats not a problem, just time consuming. What would cause the folder blinking? Hard drive issue or logic board issue? I am hoping its a hard drive issue myself. I know i got the blinking folder of death when my hard drive started making a LOUD noise...any help here would be great, so I can at least troubleshoot. When I get the ibook, I will boot up from the CD or try and then get smart status...
    Wendy

    Hello
I finally got the ibook. Fired it up from the install disk and it booted. I did a HD check with disk warrior and disk utility, they both say the HD is ok and verfied. So I tried to reinstall OSX kept coming back with an error. I tried installing OS9 with errors. Can I use the software restore discs to see what happens? and if so, do i use all 4 restore discs? The logic board checks out fine as well, did a hardware test. The drive appears to have directory problems here is what it said before I finally got a new partition done:
Verify and Repair disk “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Invalid key length
    Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
Any ideas, or is the HD done?
    Thanks

  • HP PSC 2355 Blue screen of Death and Error message/ blinking lights.

Hello, I have a HP PSC2355 that we recently moved, after we moved it started randomly locking up with the Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD), it would give an error:0X880529ec on the BSOD, further down the screen were the characters 1:H+x?+  The (ON) light was Blinking Green, the (!) light was blinking orange.  This will happen regardless if the PC was on or not, it will happen when trying to print, sometimes only getting 1" of print at the top of the page.  Currently running Windows XP, SP3 connected via USB.  I highly doubt it is a PC issue as it will happen when trying to use it as a standalone copier.  Sounds internal to me, I do have electronics experience ( I repair televisions )  If someone has any ideas, let me know.....
I might also add, you dont have to be printing for the error to crop up, you can just plug it in and wait, later you will see the BSOD and the blinking lights.

Well, decided to try to print from another computer, d/l the smaller driver only package (26meg), did a fresh install after finally getting the printer to stay on for a few minutes, it took forever on the first part of 8 on the installer (cable already plugged in), and it has been on for many hours now, printed many things, yet to have an error.  Dont know if the driver installation did anything with the firmware on the unit or not.
    Differences:

Was on a P4 desktop that had not been so lucky with the trojan/viruses.

    Dunno, time will tell.......
