Blinking Earth on Start Up

I usually don’t restart very often.
On restart of my G5 iMac rev A,
I got a Blinking Earth- maybe 3 times.
then a Blinking smiling Mac alternating between a folder with a question mark, 3 times.
My regular start up comes on right after that.
I got this before and after 10.4.4 and 10.4.5
I did DU and DW before and after with no problems.
Everything is working well, but a Blinking Earth!
I know the alternating means it’s looking for the HD.
I really don’t want to reinstall the system.

Hi Woodie,
glad I could be of help with the other problem.
With the iBook it could not only be the logic board but it could also be a failing hard drive or even a severely corrupted disk directory.
You may want to try booting from your 10.2 disks or the system restore disk and running Disk Utility to determine if there is a problem with the drive or not.
Read through step 1 of the following FAQ for more explicit information on how to do this. Don't worry about the other steps listed in the FAQ, just concentrate on step 1.

  • Startup Issue - Blinking Earth

When I boot up, I get a blinking earth icon for a minute or so before the usual boot up cycle begins.
I have checked that the proper start-up disk is selected in the preferences: "You have selected MAC OSX, 10.5.8 on the volume MacBook.
I have done a disk repair booting up from from the startup DVD. There were some repairs.
    Any thoughts about this?

You could try resetting the PRAM on the strength that the startup volume location is stored in there.

  • Blinking earth when booting up

I am running 10.6.8 and I get a blinking earth when booting up, this comes up before it goes to the apple logo and to main screen. What is this?  Thanks

You need to go to system preferences, then startup disk and choose MacIntosh HDD or whatever that disk is called. Then you restart and voila the earth is gone!! It happens because it is attempting to startup froma network rather than your hard drive

  • What does a Blinking Earth in a box mean when you turn off your computer.

We had a power outage and when the power come back on I turned the computer on to get on. What came up was a blinking planet earth in a box on a grey screen. After 10 minutes the computer came on. What does this mean? Anyone know?

Hello! It means it has lost its way and needs guidance. It's looking for a network drive to startup from and there are none on your system. Open the system prefs and go to the startup disk pane. Then select your normal disk and all should be well. Tom

  • HP Pavilion DV7-1428ca _ CAPS + NUM LOCK Continually Blinks + Will not Start up Black Screen

Would appreciate any suggestions on the issue I am encountering.
I have an HP Pavilion DV7-1428ca that was left powered on, so it went into Safe mode (screen goes blank). Once I came back to my Laptop hitting any key would take out of of the Safe mode however this time it did not. It remained with black screen irregardless of buttons pressed.
Had booted and can hear the fan and hdd go for the 2secs then it stops to a Black Screen with the "CAPS + NUM LOCK" Continually Blinking. Tried to Hard Boot several times but the same thing re-occurs.
It does not seem to be blinking in a series a code, just a steady blink (every sec) for both the CAPS + NUM Lock for as long as I leave it on. HP Site provides a chart from 1-6 series of blink codes which does not seem to apply to me.
Being out of Warranty I am hesitant in bringing it to a local repair shop without trying any alternate trouble shooting first.
    Thanks

    Hi,
First of all, shutdown the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter unplugged, remove the battery, and then hold down the Power button for a full minute.  Plug in the AC Adapter ( leave the battery out ) and see if the notebook will start.

  • Blinking globe when start up?

this usually doesnt happen but lately when i start up my mac a blinking globe appears for about 1 min. then goes away?

    roam,
The OP's problem is similar but not the same as the previous topic you allude to. The OP has a Network blinking icon and not a flashing question mark on a folder.
Just wanted to clarify. Similar troubleshooting but this is a seperate issue from what was posted in the other topic.

  • Blinking world at start up

I wanted to use Disk Warrior today on my internal hdd so I switched my start-up disk to my external hdd and tried to restart. I only get a blinking world icon on the screen. I tried to boot from the Disk Warrior cd as well as the OS 9 cd but no luck. I've used Disk Warrior before from the ext. hdd with no problem. Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance.

You're right. The world icon indicates that the imac was looking for a network drive.
Well, the situation is a non-issue for the moment. I wanted to use Disk Warrior to rebuild the internal hdd as a maintenance procedure, not out of necessity. So my main hdd is basically ok.
What I found was that if I just left the imac 'on' then after about 5-6 minutes the flashing world icon would disappear and a folder would appear with an alternating blinking question mark/faces icon. Then, after about another 5 minutes, the computer would go into boot-up mode using the internal hdd. I've done it twice and the computer has booted successfully both times.
What I still don't understand is why I can't boot from either the OS 9 cd or the Disk Warrior cd. The computer sees the OS 9 cd and its contents. And I can choose it from the Start-up Disk option in the Control Panel. I can't seem to load the Disk Warrior cd. I suspect that there may be a problem with the combo drive. But that'll be a question for another day.
    Thanks anyway for the help.

  • Flashing 'Earth' - Not starting up

Hello, I'm a new mac user. I did restart & got a flashing 'earth' graphic. I did a hard boot & it happened again - it just gets stuck at that point. Obviously I got it to start up, but anyone know that that means?
    Thanks!

    Hi Patooty70,
    Welcome to the forum.
All it means is that you have Network Startup set as your startup volume in your Startup Preferences. Do the following:
    1. Fire up System Preferences
    2. Select Startup Disk
    3. Select your hard disk from the startup volumes that appear.
All should now be well again.

  • Apps blink and wont start

iphone 4 ..page with skype, pingchat, and facebook app would bring up the app. blinks. what is the problem?

You could try a Reset, hold both Home and Power buttons for about 15 seconds, let iPhone turn off itself, and then it will restart. See if your Apps function now. If not, click App Store app, find a Free app, a Free game would be nice. Install the free app on your iPhone. See if your Apps work now.

  • Won't Start

Things were running a little slow my iBook had been on for a few days so I decided to restart. It shut down normally however when it started insted of getting the regular Mac OSX 10.4 loading screen I get the grey backround but in the middle there is a little square with a blinking Earth icon, it never goes past that. What is wrong how can I wright it?

Sounds like your laptop is looking for a NetBoot server. Restart and hold the option key down for a few seconds. You should see an icon representing your internal hard drive. Select that icon and hit the Enter key.
If your iBook boots successfully to your internal hard drive, visit System Preferences > Startup Disk and make sure your internal hard drive is selected.
    Hope that helps,
    TK

  • Media Encoder making 4K output file 'blink'... What is going on?

Working off Premiere CC. I have a 4K sequence displaying two 1080p videos side-by-side to compare quality between HEVC and H.264. Effects includes dissolves, freeze frames, and word labels created with Premiere's title maker.
Watching all the way through in Premiere timeline on my new Mac Pro it works fine. All video loaded, audio playing back, everything is great.
Ctrl+M, settings include Quicktime, Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) (have also tried Uncompressed YUV 10 bit 4:2:2 as an alternative to no avail), 3840x2160, 29.97, Progressive, Square Pixels, check box on 'Render at Maximumm Depth and 'Use Maximum Render Quality'. Queue it up, hit play and the video encodes fine for a while. Then, during a random transition, the little preview monitor on the encoder starts blinking! Sometimes the top half of the screen, sometimes the entire screen. Upon review of the final output shows that the preview was telling the truth.
    Help! What is going on?!

    Hello Kevin,
Thanks for getting back to me. It's not actually HEVC. We load in the uncompressed AVI clips into Premiere instead. If they were real HEVC then Premiere wouldn't even let me import them, yes?
Right! I was confused about how you even imported the footage.
    bgmc101 wrote:
The blinking does not start until 50 seconds to a minute in, and randomly persists through the rest of the video. We've had to export 30 to 40 second segments of the video and stitch them together using our stuff... not the most favorable workflow.
    Any ideas?
Are you exporting via the Export button (from Premiere Pro) or the Queue button (AME)? Does it work using the other method?
    Thanks,

  • Cs6 how to make 2d map come out of 3d earth

    Hiya.
    I have a pic of earth...like this...
and a map graphic like this...
the background of both images is alpha ( transparent ). I wanna put the map over the earth and bend it so it conforms to the earth shape kinda close to the the scale and position the earth pic shows...
Then ( using scale position etc ) I basically dip to black for the earth pic and bring up the map graphic as it sorta gets lifted off the surface of that earth pic.
In other words, we start tight on the earth like you see...and this map pic conforms to that ( even though it's not visible yet ). Now I dip to black on earth pic and bring map pic UP to visible at same time ( sorta a cross dissolve..)
At the SAME time ( over about 10 secs ) I now am changing the scale of BOTH so that I end up seeing the pic of map graphic in the end...and no earth pic at all.
But I want to go from the map graphic being conformed to the curvature of the earth pic.. to the flat 2d end pic you see here at the same time.
Basically, we see earth, we start to see earth fade as map ( which matches curvature of earth and scale ) comes up...and then the whole transition also scales DOWN so that in end of 10 secs or so.. we see the end pic of map graphic.
I am a new AE user.
    thanks !

You should start with two orthographic images, one a map, one the earth:
    http://awka.sourceforge.net/Day_lrg.jpg
Line them up, apply both as textures for a CC Sphere. You'll end up with two sphere layers. Put the map on the top copy.
Animate opacity of the Map Sphere and start pushing in on both layers.
Add a copy of your map layer as a flat 2D layer. Add the bulge effect and line up the image so it matches the map on the sphere.
Animate opacity and the bulge effect and move your map layer into position.
There are dozens of ways to do what you want, this is only one idea.

  • BlackBerry 8110 does not initialize only LED blinks for 5 secs

    Hi all,
I bought a used BlackBerry 8110. It worked fine in the beginning - then during some audio recording I suddenly got an hourglass cursor and the handy was frozen.
Removing the battery - even for 24h - did not help. The moment I put in the battery the LED starts shining for approx. 5-6 secs, then it extinguishs for 2-3 sec, and so on. Thats all what happens. The display remains black.
I also tried to re-install the complete device operating system but without any success. But when installing the OS the  ApploaderWebSL-Upgrade.msi was able to communicate with the handy and determines the installed software components and versions. Also the LED blinking stopped (LED was off) and the Apploader was able to delete all software installed on the device and write the new software. When that finishs and the Apploader tries to initialize (reboot) the handy the blinking described above starts again but the handy (and display) remains off.
Does anyone have an idea what to do ???
    Any help is appreciated !!!
    Thanks a lot,
