I Was skyping with a friend went to do something came back i was sighnd out of skype and my computer froze i restarted then it gave me a blinking file witch means failing hard drive so i put in my old hard drive that i knew works and still gives me a blinking file macbook pro 08 running on mavricks osx and somthing been running down ram for awhile to where it was not usable i had to keep running memory clean

a blinking file witch means failing hard drive
A blinking folder, possibly alternating with a question mark, says your Mac could not find the drive in the last-specified location. Although this COULD be caused by a failed drive, it could also be caused by your Mac simply forgetting the drive you specified in System preferences > Startup Disk.
If unsure what drives are available, hold down Alt/Option at startup, and a ROM routine will slowly draw an Icon for each potentially-bootable Volume it can find. Select the one you want and proceed, but be sure to quickly re-specify the Startup Disk.

  • Extremely slow computer even after replacing hard drive. Please help.

The problem started when I upgraded to lion (I think). I also run VMware fusion with windows 7 so maybe a virus? I ran disk utilities, followed suggestions on these communities to no avail. Our IT person and then apple support told me I should replace the hard drive. So I did. I played around a little bit and everything seemed good. Then I did a full restore from time capsule and everything is going downhill again. Any suggestions on a next step?

How do I reinstall CS6 Extended 64-bit after replacing hard drive and Windows 7 64-bit OS?

You can download the trial installer directly. Find the appropriate link below.
You must be on a trial download page to use the links, otherwise you get an error message.
For example, load the following page: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=photoshop_elements&loc=us
before pasting the link into the address bar.
    http://trials2.adobe.com/AdobeProducts/PHSP/13/win32/Photoshop_13_LS16.7z
    http://trials2.adobe.com/AdobeProducts/PHSP/13/win32/Photoshop_13_LS16.exe
You need to kepp both files downloaded into same folder and after download click on .exe file to extract .7z

  • MacBook Pro does not boot past apple screen after replacing hard drive

After replacing hard drive on MacBook Pro 13 inch early 2011 model, the screen only boots to the apple logo.  Do I need to re-install the OS?

The problem is that the OS is not in any where else of the MacBook Pro than in the HD / SSD. If you replace the Hard Drive, then you will need to Re-install OSX into that hard drive, it's pretty easy.
    1) Power up your Macbook Pro, as fast as you can press and hold the Option key (ALT). You'll see that it opens the bootable-devices you have, you'll see a Recovery partition, click it.
(If the Hard Drive contains data do the following)
    2) In the menu select Disk Utility.
    3) In Disk Utility go ahead and select the Hard Drive that is inside the MBP.
    4) Erase the content.
(If the Hard Drive contains no data continue with the following jumping the last 3 steps).
    5) Select Re-install OSX.
    6) Select the Hard Drive in which you want to install it.
Follow the steps of everything else (it should take approximately 1 hour to do the whole thing).
    Hope this helps!

  • Getting "replace hard disk error (#10008)" even after replacing hard disk

    Hi!
My laptop- HP Pavillion dv 6502- is 4 years old.
Recently, the hard disk supposedly crashed as I was not able to get anything other than a blank screen. I checked with BIOS diagnostics, and it showed error #10008- Replace Hard disk.
So, I went to an hp service centre and got the hard disk replaced.
My earlier hard drive was a Seagate 160 gb momentus 5400.3 disk.
New one is the Seagate 250 gb disk.
The laptop was working properly the day the hard disk was replaced. BIOS diagnostic status for the disk was "Passed"
But, the very next day when i tried starting the system, I got a blank screen again. I again went to BIOS and ran the diagnostic test. I performed the test twice. It took a lot of time to finish- jumping from Reaching till '80% complete', then jumping back to '10% complete', then '90% complete', then '10% complete', and so on.. finally showing '100% complete' and status : #10008 - Replace hard disk - both the times.
Then, I had to go out of station and so, I didn't touch my laptop for 2 days. When i came back, the computer was working fine and the BIOS test status said "Passed" for the disk
What could be the problem due to which my problem wasn't starting earlier- even after replacement of disk? Is it possible that the disk was not the problem in the first place?

    Hi!
Turned out the second new Hard disk was also not fine. I went back to the service centre and got the hard disk replaced again. This time the laptop has been working fine.

  • How to reload my library after replacing hard drive

I have a 4G iPod nano. I think its probably second generation, but I'm not positive and not sure how to find out. I'm running Windows XP on a Compaq laptop.
The hard drive in my computer went bad and I had to replace it. Now my iTunes library is empty and the only option I'm given is to replace the library on the iPod with the one in iTunes (the empty one). I don't want to lose my songs, but I don't know how to get them back into my library. Since iTunes wasn't affected by the bad hard drive, I copied my entire library from its folder on the old hard drive onto an external hard drive. I tried placing all of that into the same folder on the new hard drive, but iTunes still shows me an empty library.
How can I get my songs back into my library so that I can get more tunes and sync again?

Had same problem and this thread really saved me. Here was my issue and your thread fixed it. Thanks
So I brought my PC in to a local shop that added an internal HD for me. They moved MY Music folder with the iTunes library to another drive (the new one). I open iTunes and nothing is there. How do I get the library with all my music and ringtones back into iTunes. I have searched here and other forums and only talks about moving library away to aother places. I have no trouble with it being on the new drive just want iTunes to see it. This has to be easy and I hope someone can help me. Thanks. I have windows XP if that matters. I can find the iTunes folder with all the music on what is now the D drive.
Signed, affraid to synch my iPhone until the library is back to normal

  • HT201250 How to restore laptop from time capsule after replacing hard drive

How do I reload all my programs and files from a time capsule after changing hard drive?  Also Apple store reloaded with Snow Leopard and not Lion.  Will that be a problem?  Thank you

Plug the external drive into a computer by usb or whatever box you have available..
When you say blank, is it correctly formatted.. we recommend HFS+ which is Mac OS Extended (jorrnaled)
Make sure you use GUID type disk setup not MBR if it came from PC world.
Copy the files via finder from TC to the external drive.

  • Blinking Folder with Question Mark after replacing Hard Drive

I have a 2010 Macbook Pro. It recently stopped starting up.  I took it to the Genius Bar and the guy working there told me I needed to replace the hard drive.  I did that.  Now when I start the computer up I get a blinking folder with a question mark on it.
I've tried holding Option to get to the Start Up Manager and I've tried holding Command+R to get to Recovery and both give me no results.
I cannot find my original Installation Disc.
Can anyone give me advice on what I should do next? Do I need to get another copy of the Install DVD to continue?

Install Snow Leopard from the original discs that came with the computer. You cannot use a retail Snow Leopard DVD with that model. Update to 10.6.8. You can then redownload Lion or Mountain Lion freely if you have purchased them already.
The first thing you must do is partition and format the drive before you can install OS X. To do that you will need an installer disc. You can purchase replacements from Apple:
Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.
To contact product and tech support: Apple - Support - Contact Apple Support.
You cannot use Internet Recovery unless you had Lion or Mountain Lion already installed. In that case see:
    Install Lion/Mountain Lion on a New HDD/SDD
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Pismo does not boot after replacing hard drive

We have had an old Pismo for several years now. Two or so years ago we decided to replace the stock 6GB hard drive, which was getting full, with a new 60GB drive. We cloned the old drive via target disk mode, popped in the new drive, copied the data back (again via target disk mode), and were surprised when we were met with the flashing question mark/system folder icon. Sort of left it at that and forgot about it.
I stumbled upon the Pismo again today and decided to see if I couldn't get it working. After going through a few "why won't this even turn on" sessions (the machine hadn't been powered on in a few years, so pulling the internal battery and resetting the PMU fixed that), I popped the old drive back in and the machine booted just fine. Cloned the original drive (again) using Carbon Copy Cloner via target disk mode to a disk image on my MacBook. Powered it down, put the new (60GB) drive back in the Pismo, cloned the disk image back to the new drive. The data's there, because I can browse it in target disk mode, but I can't boot off the new hard drive. I can't boot off my Tiger install DVD either - the DVD drive spins up and tries to access the disc, but won't boot. I'm going to try and get my hands on the CD version of Tiger to see if there's a difference using that.
Disk Utility on the MacBook says there's nothing wrong with the Pismo's hard drive, but I'm not convinced that's the case. I'd heard about Pismos being picky with certain types of hard drives, is this true? If not, what other issues might be leading to this behavior?

Is this perhaps an artifact of the drive being formatted via target disk mode on my MacBook
I suspect that the problem lies somewhere in that situation. I suggest that you boot from the install disk as I suggested previously and reformat the HDD and reinstall the OS.
Formatting, Partitioning Erasing a Hard Disk Drive
Warning! This procedure will destroy all data on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure you have an up-to-date, tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
    • Boot the MacBook Firewire Target Disk Mode.
    • Insert install disk into MacBook's optical drive.
    • Connect computers via firewire cable
    • Option Boot Pismo.
    • Select Install Disk for startup and click on the straight arrow.
    • Select language
    • Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger and later) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
    • Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
    • Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
    • Click on Options button
    • Select Apple Partition Map (PPC Macs)
    • Click OK
    • Select number of partitions in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note 1: One partition is normally preferable for an internal HDD.)
    • Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
    • Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    • Click Apply/Partition button at bottom of panel.
    • Select Erase tab
    • Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
    • Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
    • Click Erase button
    • Quit Disk Utility.
Open installer and begin installation process.

  • Question Mark Folder Problem (Already replaced hard drive)

On Sunday night I found my macbook pro ("13, mid 2010, refurbished) in a frozen state a few seconds after waking it from sleep. So I did a forced restart and then my macbook wouldn't boot (blinking question mark folder). I troubleshooted with the OSX Install DVD on my own before taking it to the Genius Bar (disk utility & TDM could not find the hard drive), and we both came to the conclusion that I should install a new drive. So yesterday I bought a new drive, did a fresh OSX install and managed to migrate all of my info from my presumed damaged drive to the new one. Everything went smoothly and the computer was in working order all night. That is until this morning when I shut it down before bringing it to work. On my lunch break I decided to fire up my newly upgraded macbook only to find that it once again would not boot, still with the blinking question mark folder. I also tested to see if I have faulty RAM and it doesn't look like it (unless both sticks are fried). This is becoming incredibly frustrating and I hope I don't have to replace a board or anything like that. Anybody here have suggestions? It'd be greatly appreciated.

Could be something as simple as the hard drive cable...the hardware test won't identify this. Have an Apple store nearby? If so, make an appointment. If it's a bad cable, the fix is easy, but not free unless you have AppleCare.

  • Basic functions missing after replacing hard drive

My drive crashed. I took it to Apple to have it replaced. I then noticed some differences.
I no longer see the hard drive in the finder window or on the desktop. Its no where to be found. 2nd, there is no longer the folder with 'your name' that contains the following - pictures, downloads, sites, library, music, videos etc... I don't even see my computer in the finder by 'Devices.' Now its kind of a hassle having to scroll through the 'All My Files' until I find what Im looking for. I can't easily organize files as I did before when having a folder for everything. All see - Applications, All My Files, Airdrop, Downloads, Documents. Its probably not that big of a deal but it is a bit annoying.
    Is this new normal change?
And is there a way to manually bring this function back?
    Thanks,

Choose Preferences from the Finder menu and change them as desired.

  • How do I get LR4 to find all photos in catalog after replacing hard drive on mac? question marks all

I had the hard drive replaced on my mac.  I did a restore from back up drive to my new hard drive.  First LR4 couldn't find the catalog so I pointed to it. Then I opened lightroom 4 and it cannot see ANY of my photos. I don't want to link each folder full of photos it will take hours. Isn't there another way to do this so it finds them all at once?  Photos are still located in the same location on the new hard drive after restore.  Nothing changed except the hard drive.  Thank you!

I did find something in another post that suggests to go to the top most file in the structure and right click and click on "find missing folder" then you point to that folder and it will find all subfolders and photos.   This really worked well for most of the photos but I have I must have moved at some point that I will have to relocate.  This is good information whether you are working with a Mac or a PC. I think it would work for either.  I hope this helps someone else out there.

  • HP Mini 110 - No audio after replacing hard drive and installing XP

My wife's Mini 110 recently died and I had to replace the hard drive.  I got everything up and running fine except for the audio.  The driver on the HP site for the 110 will not install as it says that there is no device installed for that driver.  In the Hardware list, there is a PCI Device with a question mark and I cannot get it to find a driver.  Even after installing the chipset driver and flashing the bios there is not audio device working.

  • Kernel panic after replacing hard drive in Powerbook 17"

I need help with a kernel panic that won't even let me start up. Here's a detailed account of what happened:
The hard drive in my Powerbook 17" recently failed. Since it is out of warranty anyway, I decided to try to replace it myself. I found a good tutorial with photos online and was careful to rehook everything appropriately. After the replacement, I immediately installed OS 10.2 from my Apple Software Restore CD. It seemed to successfully install on the new HD.
After installing OS X, I restarted. I got the Apple logo on the grey screen but as soon as the "gear" started spinning, I got a kernel panic. I tried resetting the PRAM and the PMU but still got the panic message so I fired up Apple Hardware Test CD. Without even running the test, it gave me the message that errors were detected with my RAM upon startup. In the Hardware Profile tab, under Memory Overview, it showed:
    768/1024
    SODIMM0/J20STANDARD512/512
    SODIMM1/J23REVERSED256/516
The last line "SODIMM1..." was red. It appeared that one of the sticks of RAM was damaged. However, when I swapped the sticks, I still got the kernel panic, but the Hardware Profile no longer listed either of the sticks in red and the full 1024/1024 MB was shown.
Does anyone have any idea why I am still getting a panic message? Could I have damaged the RAM itself or the RAM slot? (I was very careful when pulling it out.) Any help would be much appreciated. This has been a great computer for about 6 years and I hope to get another few out of it!
    Peter

For anyone interested: I experimented with this a little more last night. By switching the RAM sticks, the memory problem seems to be resolved. I was still getting the kernel panic though so I put the original hard drive (which is on the verge of crashing) back in the machine and everything booted up just fine. It seems like the problem may actually be with the new hard drive. I don't need to do anything to the drive other than pop it in the machine, right?
