Blinking images of icons on connected computers

Blinking images of icons on connected computers
I'm having a very strange experience with my MacPro when connected to our other two computers via Ethernet. Whether I am connected to the central backup Ethernet drive or one of the other computers (a Mac G5 DP 2 Ghz and a Mac G4 DP 1 Ghz) the desktop "blinks" as though it is continually refreshing the icons of the files and folders. The Preview image and the file's size, likewise keeps blinking, about once every 5-6 seconds. I have occasional sieze-ups with the Network printer and crashes while transferring files to another of the computers.
The problem is new and the Ethernet Network is not, I thought I had a faulty cable but after changing the cable from the MacPro to the Switcher or Router (a 5 port SmartSwitch by NettCom) with a new one I find the problem still exists. BUT it is only one way! If I connect to the MacPro from the G4, for example, the blinking does not exist.
What could it be?

Hi, it's me adding to my own question - I tried starting from my other drive, my backup drive, and the blinking happens then too (not surprising really since it is a CCCloner copy of the original) but then I started as ROOT, and the blinking doesn't happen at all. I then started (rebooted) to my e-drive (TTPro) and logged onto Network via Finder and the blinking doesn't happen there either, so, I'm beginning to think that I have some sort of conflict of applications that are causing it. I do have a number of what I think are called "hacksies", like Tinkertool and Onyx and TTC that not only work as Utilities but also allow you to "customise" the computer's behaviour and appearance, like whether the scroll arrows are together, or whether the Blob is visible. Maybe I have these in conflict?
Should I just un-install all these until I have a close to basic system? Or would I be better off trying OSX 10.4.11 and see if something changes that way?

I don't know much about computers, so please be patient. I started using Airport and I recently noticed a "network" option right below "Macintosh HD". When I click on "network" it shows "b67446000000" with a computer monitor icon and "connection failed". When I right click on this and select "Get more info" it displays nothing, just the spinning wheel. When I select "Connect As" it asked for my password to connect to "Server b67446000000". This may have been on my computer since I got it, I never paid much attention. Is this part of the operating system or has someone hijacked my computer? Why would I need a server...it's just me and my one computer? Maybe someone has hacked in through Airport? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Is your airport a Time Capsule.. if so it is able to serve files on the network.
The number is the MAC address of the network in the router.
Please reset the apple router whatever is and redo the setup.. this time give it a simple name.. eg TCgenX where X is the actual gen of the unit and give it a simple wireless name.. TCwifi and a simple password with 8-20 characters mix of upper and lower case and numbers.
Perhaps even better give me a screenshot from the computer of the airport utility showing me the Airport with its MAC address.

15" Macbook. When i power on all I get is white screen with a blinking file folder icon with a question mark on it.N

You may have a bad hard drive. The flashing folder with the ? indicates that the system cannot find your hard drive. Use the installation disc that came with your machine. Insert it into the disc drive and restart the machine holding down the "C" key . When the restart shows the Apple screen you can release the C keyWhen the installation screen appears, click on the utilities button. Does the left side of the disc utilities screen show your HD? If not, then your HD is bad or it could be a loose connection. ifixit.com has a good tutorial on how to replace the HF in the Macbook. Follow the instructions to remove your HD. Reinstall your HD and boot up your machine to see if it recognizes your HD. If it does't, you probably will need to replace your HD>
Is your machine still under warranty? If so, take it to your nearest Apple Store for repairs as the repairs will be covered under your warranty. If you bought AppleCare when you bought your computer your warranty is for three years. If you didn't buy the Apple Care, then your warranty is only good for one year from the date of purchase.

• SIU "Apply system configuration settings" and Connect computers to directory servers

Good morning/Afternoon/Evening everyone.
I've currently been studying/researching imaging with OSX 10.9 server, using the SIU. As I'm going through it, one option that is appealing to me, is the "COnnect computers to directory servers:" option under the Apply System configuration settings workflow action.
The issue is that when click on the + to add a server, it only comes up with Localhost (127.0.0.1) and won't give me the option to point to my OD server for binding. Is there a way to change this, or some other option I am missing?
Also, I'm at a loss to find any setting in Profile manager that will enable/turn on "Remote management" for ARD and SSH.

Thank you for that link, it is insightful. So let me throw this into the mix:
When it comes to ARD, we have to have a local user on the local machine, in order to login, correct? It won't allow us to have OD authenticated admins/users login to the client machine. Is that correct?
If that is the scenario, then how are we to lock down a situation where we are imaging multiple macs and have the potential to have admins changing or leaving, and a need to reset local machine admin credentials. Obviously we aren't going to do this individually per machine. This would also need to be done via scripting (or ARD CLI to our enterprise), but then each image needs to be updated or all new machines need to be touched after image/install.
Am I thinking of this the correct way?
Also, is it possible to create an image that has no local user at all, or is that just nonsense?

• Can you 'link' an image state icon, across a folio.....?

Here's a thought for you all.....Can you 'link' an image state icon, across a folio.....
for example a "blinking" 'tap me' 2 state icon, that if you alter, it alters across the whole folio via links??
Object styles?

For each icon that you want to use in your email signature:
locate icon on internet webpage - right-click on the icon and select 'Save Image as'. Save the icon to your computer in a suitable file.
Then in Thunderbird
insert > Image
choose file - locate the saved icon on your computer
click on Link tab and enter the www etc webpage link info
click on OK to insert image with link.
Codewise, where you have the actual icon you would need something stating where the icon is located:
eg

path to image saved on computer included in within <>

• Problems with Image Matte not staying connected to project.

System: Dell
Model: XPS 8300
Processor: Intel Core i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40 GHz
RAM: 16 GB
System Type: Windows 7 Home Premium; Service Pack 1; 64 Bit Operating System
I've been having problems with my image matte(s) staying connected in my projects. It happens when I reload any project that has it. It's a real simple vignette used on black video. The image file is on the root of the project folder, so I don't see why it won't stay connected. Scratching my head on this one. Let me know if you need any more information.

It's going offline and wants me to relink it again.
Hard drive is a standard drive. It hold 2 TBs of storage.
If it helps, I am also using a templated folder system that I copy for each project I do. This folder has this same file in it.

My MacBook Air has a blinking file folder icon on a blank screen with a ? In the middle of the icon. I've tried turning my computer off and on three times with no luck. Any recommendations on how to fix the problem?

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

• Blinking grey folder icon with question mark on boot

Hi. Just got my system from the Apple Service center where they have reinstalled a new hard disk for me.
When I come home, and start the machine, it shows me a blinking grey folder icon with a question mark in it.
Only thing I can do in this screen is switch off the power. But when I reboot, it shows me the same icon again.
With google, I discovered that if while rebooting I press the OPTION key, then it boots me into the firmware password mode. How can I automate this? I do not want to have to always boot the laptop with Option key pressed.
Thanks for any pointers.

That question mark means that your machine can't find a drive with a system installed to boot from. Sounds as if the techs didn't install a system when they replaced the drive... do you still have the installation disc(s) that your MBP might have come with?

• How to see the connected computers in to my network?

If you have an Apple AirPort base station, you can launch AirPort Utility, put it in to "manual setup" mode for your base station, then click on "Wireless Clients" in the Summary panel.
I also want to remove them from my network
If you're asking for advice on how to do that, I'd first change (or implement) a network password. If that isn't good enough, look at the "Access Control" tab of the "AirPort" panel.
