Blinking MagSafe Connector Problem

The magsafe connector on my year-old MacBook has suddenly started constantly blinking between green and orange when plugged into the computer. My battery status in the menu bar is also constantly switching between "Charged" and "Calculating." Opening "Energy Saver" in the System Preferences also shows the battery going back and forth between 99% and 100% charged every second or so.
Does anybody know what's going on?

e-man,
Here's a thread where I posted my experience with this problem. At first Apple sent me a replacement charger, but when that didn't fix it, they had me send it in for repair and replaced the battery, hard disk, and a couple of other parts. So far everything's holding out well, but I've been operating off the AC more than the battery since getting both replaced.

Hope this helps!

with 82 charging  cycles, your battery most certainly fine.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1713
take a dry toothbrush to the gold contacts both male and female on the connector and retest.
Sounds like you have a damaged connector or a damage in the DC cord.
Go to the apple store and use a DIFFERENT adapter for 10 seconds, that will immediately tell you the SOURCE of the fault.

  • MagSafe Connector

    Hi,
    How r u?!
Ok, I've got one problem, maybe u can help me with advise!
I've got my oldie MBP (with CoreDuo CPU), everything was fine since today!
My MagSafe connector today "fry up" with grey smoke, it really fright me...
But it didn't look burned to black, it got lil deformed rubber beside connector and got lil hole where smoke comes out! I always was "gently" to charger...
I uploaded some photos to my MobileMe gallery, where u can see MagSafe connector...
    http://gallery.me.com/kristians.murnieks#100039
Did Apple changed it?! It's extended warranty?!
My oldie MBP didn't got any warranty anymore!
    What I should do?!
    Recommend me please!
    Thanks!
    Kris.
    P.S.:

Am on my 3rd power adapter in 4 years. With any mobile use (such as while traveling) the cord going into the Magsafe will eventually fray and wear out. One time it started smoking as the partially frayed connection started burning through the insulation. Apple needs to lengthen the ~ 1/4" of rubber sleeve they have there for that purpose because it is insufficient.
As busy as many of us are, at first one must wonder how something as simple as a power cord could a.) merit so many negative reviews and b.) be worth the time to complain. But for those of us who used the regular old cords on the Powerbook under similar circumstances this never occurred. And at $79 a pop, the MagSafe cords are too expensive to be an annual throw-away.

  • Macbook powers up when the magsafe connector is plugged

    Hello all,
Last month, I've had the battery problem that makes the battery not detectable by the macbook, and gives me an X in the menubar.
While I was waiting for my new battery, the machine begun to power up when I plugged the magsafe connector without pressing the power button. I thought the problems were related.
Well now I've changed the battery and it's working alright again, but the power up issue is still bothering me.
    Can anyone help me out?
    Thank you.

    Hi!
See my post, had the same problem:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4484223#4484223
    I did the following:
    - Reset the System Management Controller (Turn off computer, remove power cord and battery, hold down power button for 5 seconds, reconnect battery and power cord)
    - Reset the PRAM (Hold CommandOption+'P''R' while booting until you hear the second startup chime)
    - Move the pins of the MagSafe connector with the plastic cap of a pen (maybe one of them was stuck in a wrong position and didn't make the correct connection when plugged)
    Ciao

  • Travel adaptor for Macbook with magsafe connector?

Has anyone found anyone that sells a aircraft travel adaptor for the Macbook?
Kensington do one for the old iBook but a magsafe connector version has not appeared.
Hopefully this is not becasue Apple have patented the design of the magsafe connector and are not letting anyone else produce them.
If this is indeed the case, and Apple don't produce their own travel adapter, I will be quite cross as the whole point of having a laptop is so you can take it with you when you are travelling.
If the voltages for the iBook are the same as the Macbook how about producing an iBook to Magsafe adapter so we can use the 3rd party travel adapters?

I just checked and the prongs on my MB adapter are exactly the same as the ones on my iPod power adapter. They should work just fine.
From a manufacturing standpoint, it makes no sense to have two different products for the same exact job.

  • Hello, can i use the new magsafe connector on a mac pro from 2008?

Hello, I have a mac pro 15' from 2008, and the connector just stop working, in fact I have 2 connectors, because I broke a mac pro brand new, and then I had to buy this one, so both connectors stop working all of a sudden, and now when I went to Apple Store, the anwwer I got was "is not possible to repair" and we don't have to deliver before 4 months. I am atonished! 4 months?? How is that possible, and they show to me in Apple online the answer and it say 4 months indeed. Now I am looking to the new magsafe connector, that was made to the new mac pro and the deliver is the next day. My question is
can I use this one on my mac pro from 2008? Because i reada few things that there were complains that the new did not work. Can i get some help one this please?

Guys we have a legit question here about a power cord and you guys are going back and forth here. If you guys want to ccontinue can you please just give each other your emails.
ANYWAY - What I know of the magsafe cord is s different sized port.
All magsafe plugs fit in all magsafe sockets, no exception. Your only concern is that the power output of the supply be equal to or greater than the computer into which it is plugged.

  • New MagSafe connector?

I own a MB pro 2011 and a Thunderbolt Display also 2011. If I would buy a MB air 2012 would I still be able to charge the MB air since they're using MagSafe 2.0 and the Thunderbolt Display still using the "old" MagSafe? Do I have to buy an adapter or could I go to an Apple reseller and swap it to a MagSafe 2.0 charger?

You would need to buy the adapter as the Thunderbolt Display has the larger version MagSafe connector that is fixed to the cable.

  • Can I use the T-style  magsafe connector ..

if my macbook pro 13 inch (bought this time last year) came with the L style magsafe connector?
My L style connecter is shorting out and it seems like the T-style has better reviews than the L style. Plus I'm not to keen on spending $79 on a new charger.

I'm currently using the T-style connector from an old (3-ish years old) 17" MBP with my newer (<1 year old) 17" MBP.  But if the connector you're talking about isn't for a 13" MBP, I'd check with Apple before trying it, just to be safe.  I asked at a local Apple Store before trying it myself, rather than risk damaging the computer.

  • Question regarding magsafe connector

i would just like to ask if the magsafe connector which is a magnet accidentally touched the adapter for like 30 seconds? would it damage the adapter?

    No damage should occur.

  • IPad in bookbag with MagSafe connector, any risk?

I own a MacBook Pro and an iPad, and I would like to place the laptop, charging cable, and iPad all in my book bag sometimes.
Does the MagSafe connector pose any risk to the iPad due to it being a pretty powerful magnet?
I'm not exactly rubbing the connector over the screen or anything, but it will be in close proximity.

The magnets in the iPad 2 for the Smart Cover are more powerful than the ones on the MagSafe connector.
So no, there is no risk.

  • Discoloration bottom case around magsafe connector

    Hi all,
I just noticed a slight discoloration on the bottom case and lid of my MacBook. The corner next to the Magsafe connector and the lower left hand corner of the screen case have developed some kind of yellowish/lightbrown "stain". The opposite corners near the optical drive show no such discoloration. Perhaps caused by overheating ? Common ? Should get checked out just to be sure ? The rest of the outer case is fine (the keyboard case also), so I guess I really already know what to do. Just wondering if this is a familiar issue and has perhaps already been adressed in some way.
    Thanks in advance,
    B.
Ps: I have a white MacBook, if that wasn't clear already .

I got one of them too.. pretty nifty.
went back and got one for each of my Magsafe's, as well as an extra rebuilt Magsafe. Probably the best deal yet on power packs for MacBooks and Pro's!

  • Cleaning magnetic-debris out of the MagSafe connector?

So I recently took my new macbook on 2-day beach trip. While the macbook itself never saw the ocean, some of my clothes or something brought back some small chunks of magnetically active sand/rocks/debris which stuck itself quite firmly to my magsafe connector, and got in the way when I tried to plug the macbook into the wall.
I managed to clean out most of the rocks with a couple of likewise magnetic flat-head screw drivers and a can of air-duster spray, but that was really quite a pain.
    Anybody have any better solutions?

A more powerful magnet of the same polarity as the part that is covered w/ debris would probably do the trick....not that I think bringing a magnet near your machine is the best idea (disclaimer disclaimer)...but if you can figure out the closest thing then you're relatively safe. So...if you know what you're doing then do it at your own risk. Otherwise forget I said anything.
I'd remove the battery and hold down the power button for a bit first just to be as safe as possible.
    Good Luck,
    -j

  • Has the thunderbolt display had its magsafe connector upgraded

Has the thunderbolt display had its magsafe connector upgraded and if so is there a backward compatible adapter for the older magsafe connectors?

The web page for the Thunderbolt Display says it still comes with the MagSafe to MagSafe 2 Converter, so I would say the attached connector is still the original MagSafe.
