Blinking Printers in Printer Setup Utility

Hello - Let me start by saying I am no Mac expert at all. I am the network admin for my company but only support two Macs and thus do not have much interaction with them but I am tech savy.
We have one of our Adv department living remote in a different state. Suddenly yesterday, when she went to print, she was given an error that there was no printer selected. Her only option was to install a new printer. This is strange because she has two network printers (one wireless and one by network cable through a small switch) and has Adobe Acrobat 7 so should also have the Adobe Printer available.
I had her go into the Printer Setup Utility through Apple->System Preferances->Printers. There she sees her three printers but they are all blinking on and off. What I mean by that is, the three are there, then gone, then there, then gone. She said they are not graying out but actually disappearing. She is unable to select them to delete them.
We have tried setting up a new printer but it does not detect the printers. I have had her power off both the physical printers to see if some type of network issue was causing the problem but the blinking continues.
I did have her try booting in "Safe Mode" which I understand does some system repair but after that was done and a reboot, the problem persists.
Does anyone have any ideas for this issue. Of course of all days, she needs to get a project printed to PDF by the end of the day for our printer to meet the deadline.
I would be very greatful for any ideas or help!
Thanks,
Daniel

Hello All,
She was able to get the catalog out via an export to PDF option in Quark. Unfortunately the files turn out to be about 25MB per page that way and she had to upload over 600MB via her DSL connection. But it got done.
Now the problem still persists. I have some new info from working on the problem.
We were able to get the blinking to stop by selecting the check box to share the printer from within the Printer Setup Utility. This allowed us to click on the Delete button but we receive an error saying "Server error service unavailable". We are also getting the same error we when try to add a printer.
Doing some searching, I found that that points to the problem being related to the cups printing system in Mac OS X. I did the fix listed in this article twice
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107054
describing how to reset the printing system in OS 10.3 but it did not help.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Daniel

My C6180 was printing slowly so I followed the steps in the forum (unplugging, holding down the buttons, etc. ... Shut down, restart, etc.) Now it doesn't appear in my list of available printers when I try to set up again in the Printer Setup Utility. My software is updated. How to I get it in the list. I've been around in circles and I may have messed up some settings in trying to solve this. I have to print stuff for work. Freaking out a little. Help.

  • Printer Setup Utility lists no printers

Just upgraded to Panther. Printer setup utility shows no printers, but they're in Library folder. And utility can't/won't add them. What's the problem?

    Welcome to the discussions.
When you Upgrade to any Operating System usually it will sometimes de activate a Printer you were using.
The reason is you have downloaded a brand new operating system.
When you do this you will often have to Trash what you have previously installed, plus going to your library and deleting everything that is related to your printer.
    Restart your computer afterward.
Then you need to boot up in Panther and then put the Printer Disc in and make sure your Printer is plugged in and then Download your Printer from the Disc. After you do that it is a good idea to check your printers web site and make sure you have the latest updates for your printer and operating system.
When it downloads to your Desktop you must drag it to the Printer Folder and then double click the dowload to launch it.
Double clicking it on the desktop will not launch it in the proper folder.
Some printer upgrades will download to the printer utility folder and launch while others will not.
You don't tell what printer and how your hooked up so it;s hard to address your problem without all the detailed information.
The method I explain above I have used and works.
    Cheers Don

  • No printers appear in Printer Setup Utility

While trying to get my MacBook to communicate with a Dell 1710 laser (connected by USB), I eventually resorted to selecting the "Reset Printer System" command in Printer Setup Utility.
This caused all printers to disappear from the Print & Fax control panel, and from Printer Setup Utility.
Reinstalling the Dell printer drivers had no effect.
Reinstalling OSX 10.4 (Archive & Install) had no effect.
I ran Disk Utility and repaired disk permissions, but this had no effect.
All the printer driver folders and files can be seen in Users/Library/Printers, but none show up in Printer Setup Utility.
    Can anyone help?

I would suspect a bad connection. Plug the printer into the computer, turn it on and check USB in the System Profiler. There should be some indication that the printer is there.

  • Need help to find printer setup utility

I recently bought my first Mac and have slowly been adding to it over the last couple of weeks. Today I added a new printer that I wish to connect wirelessly. The printer is a Brother MFC-3360. I installed the software that came with the printer and had the printer connected directly to the Mac Book. It printed just fine.
I then disconnected the USB cable and plugged it into the Extreme Base station. It failed to print. According to the Extreme manual, I need to open printer setup utility, located in the utilities folder in the applications folder. Then from there I need to add the printer.
The problem is, I have no printer setup utility. Is there another place where it might be located?
Any other ideas will be much appreciated. Thank you!

Found problem. Went to Sys prefs -> Printers and Fax -> removed my printer and re-installed. Works like a charm.

  • Why doesn't the HP printer show up in the printer setup utility?

Can't understand why the HP2100 TN laserjet printer that is networked(ethernet) via a Snow basestation does not automatically show up in my list of printers. I also downloaded HP's drivers for it.
My boyfriend's Powerbook running 10.3 is able to automatically see it, and it showed up as "shared" on my computer when his laptop is up and running. I tried Appletalk etc. He got it running using IP printing and having the IP address, but he told me it should have just showed up.
I'm new to the Mac so I don't understand this. According to the config page he printed Appletalk is active on the printer its selected on my networking page.
    Any help apprciated.

  • Printer setup utility freezes when I try to add drivers

I have an Epson Stylus Photo RX500 all-in-one printer which worked fine until a few weeks ago. My best guess as to why it stopped working is that I let my hard drive fill up and some data got corrupted/overwritten (I've had numerous problems incuding my System Folder becoming 'unblessed' which necessitated a reinstall).
When I tried to print there were no drivers recognized. If I checked in home>library>printers I could find what appeared to be the driver (Stylus Photo RX500) but opening that would bring up a message it wasn't in my list of printers. Trying to add the printer to the list gave the message that the driver wasn't found. In the Finder the driver was listed as 372KB. In my cloned external HD the same file was listed as 408KB. Copying over the larger file to my internal didn't solve the problem.
I went to the Epson site and found a driver which was only listed for OS10.2 and a driver to Intel Macs (I have a G4 PB). I downloaded the 10.2 driver and installed it (408KB). Now when I open the printer setup utility EPSON USB is listed as an option but when I click on that the utility freezes. I've tried restarting and repairing permissions but still no go.
    Yoroshiku onegaishimasu. TIA.

    Ohayo gozaimasu,
I saw what was available on the US site, so went to the Epson UK site, where they show one driver for OSX - PowerPC, for the RX500, it's version 1.9b versus the 1.7 on the US site. The driver is a 7.9mb download. Looking at the other English sites around the world, 1.9b seems to be the lastest OSX PPC driver.
    The link is http://esupport.epson-europe.com/FileDownload.aspx?lng=en-GB&ID=19449&data=6D58D 013F2B22854B9450E1814C134D338E0C605169D8D398A3275D13F8B5BB5
Perhaps that will work better for you.

  • Printer Setup Utility will not allow new driver to be added

I just bought a Canon Pixma MP960, installed the drivers and then downloaded the driver from their website. When I go to add a new driver in Printer Setup Utility--i highlight the MP960 connected thru USB, but the 'add' feature is not lit up. When i have it search for new drivers, it detects a new driver, but when I hit 'add'--Printer Setup Utility "unexpectedly quits" every time. The only drivers in there are beta thingies that do not work w/ my printer.
The Canon tech guy says that there is a problem with my Printer Setup Utility--but i can't seem to find a solution online. I don't know much about macs, but can I update the Printer Utility program or something? help!

Part of the problem might be if you actually have more than one version of the driver for the printer installed on the computer. Check the drivers at Mac OS X disk/Library/Printers/Canon/ and make sure there is only one plugin for the printer. If you have more than one, trash both and download and install only the driver from Canon that is compatible for Mac OS X 10.4.x. After you install the driver, run Repair Disk Permissions using Disk Utility. If you have only one correct printer driver plugin installed, it should work.

  • Add (+) printer in Sys Prefs Print & Fax makes Print Setup Utility crash!

Something is wrong with System Preferences Print & Fax pane, or something else... From there, I can't add any new printers. When you click + below the list, it's supposed to launch printer setup utility? But it does nothing what so ever.. or that's what I thought until I looked in Console to see what's going on (if anything), and the console reports that the printer setup utility crashed. It launches fine directly from Utilities. What gives?
Here is the crashlog report, if anyone can make sense of it:

  • Printer Setup utility freezing

We are having a problem on 3 machines, with the printer setup utility freezing when a user logs in. it obviously effects microsoft office products etc. I have read the other posts and checked that users can manage printers but this is still happening. - the client machines are running 10.3.9, to a tiger 10.45 server.
The only difference between the machines is, that the ones with a problem have had the interactive smartboard software installed.
    Any help would be appreciated!!
    Thanks!

I have the epson R800 showing up in the printer list and everything looks fine.....click print and nothing prints......no error message. it seems to trigger the print utility on the G5 to stop jobs but I can start jobs again-just can't print from laptop .
    help please!

  • Reinstall Printer Setup Utility on OS 10.3.9

I just upgraded an old iBook with OS 9.2 to 10.3 and then 10.3.9.
In the process of adding a printer, which didn't work at first, I moved all the printer files into trash, including the printer setup utility. (I only realized this after I noticed that the printer drives which I added again are working, but only from the actual manufacturerer's utility, not from the OS).
So now I cannot add the printers?
How can I re-install ONLY the printer setup utility? I used the online software upgrade to get to 10.3.9 - now going back to a lesser OS is not allowed on the HD.
Hope someone knows what to do. So far there wasn't any real solution to similar earlier posts.

Use Pacifist to extract the Printer Setup Utility from your computer's install disks and then follow Barbara's suggestion. Following Barbara's suggestion on its own may result in either the utility not being installed or with key parts missing; it might also work as is.

  • The application Printer Setup Utility quit unexpectedly

    Hi All,
I'm using 10.4.11, trying to add a printer. In 'Default Browser', I click on 'More Printers', and I receive the following error, The application Printer Setup Utility quit unexpectedly.
Done all the basics, reset permissions, updated latest software, no help.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks.

    To The Apple Discussion Boards!
Did you reboot your computer after repairing permissions & installing? If so, trash the com.apple.print.PrintCenter.plist file & restart your computer.
    Please post back the results.

  • Printer Setup Utility not working and autostopping jobs for an HP

I have both an Epson Stylus R200 and an HP Photosmart 2570 series all-in-one. the epson prints fine, but the HP doesn't at all. it keeps stopping the jobs i send to the HP. The HP is also a scanner and i can do scans so i know its not a problem with the physical USB connection.
To attempt to fix this problem, i try to open the Printer Setup Utility. I've tried to open the utility 3 seperate ways. 1) from the menu item "utility" in th e HP printer dock item
    2) from "Utilities/PRinter Setup Utility
    3) from System Preferences "Printing/Faxing>setup printers"
still the utility appears to be running on my dock, and the menus on the top appear (Edit View Printers Windows Help) simply won't drop down and let me use the Utility.
is my Printer Setup Utility COrrupted? if so, where can i find a replacement download without reinstalling Panther?
i searched the apple downloads to no avail.
    restarting now.
    any help is appreciated. thanks
G3 minitower 370 MHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   [email protected]

thanks for your repsonse greg, however this is not resolved.
ok, i know ive got the 10.3.9 update installed successfully. in fact, i decided to reinstall OS X completely and update from there. this took much time. i backed up all system files manually and erase and installed OS X. i am having multiple problems still as a result, such as dreamweaver m not booting, but that goes beyond the scope of this help thread.
but, i can finally open the Printer Setup Utility. i did not find my old R200 drivers so I reinstalled the R200 driver. I also ran the HP all-in-one software. now, whats left to do is add these two printers in the utility.
When i select from the add printer dialogue, "EPSON USB" it find the R200 driver, then i try to select "add" and it gives me this error: "An error occurred while trying to add the selected printers successful-ok-conflicting-attributes"
when attempting to add the HP all in one to the utility, it won't even find the HP driver. Before i re-installed the HP all-in-one software, it had found it but gave me the exact same error as above. also in the add new printer dialogue the menu item that should say "USB" is just blank, and when i select what should say "usb" anyway, it.
i deleted two files in the Library/Preferences/ folder that started with com.apple.print they appeared to be default configuration files. after rebooting the utility, the same problem persists.
any other suggestions? now i can't print at ALL.

  • Printer Setup Utility Crashes every time I try to open it.

If I cant install printers, then I cant use 10.5. This is a production machine at a print shop. Any ideas?

Printer Setup Utility no longer exists in Leopard. All printer driver functions are handled by the Print & Fax preference pane in System Preferences.

That's the way I have always set up my printers. I did not even know there was another way. Well, now there isn't anymore.
I just found that app on my Tiger. Never noticed it, never used it.
Interesting. I guess it was simply a matter of removing duplication.
I can only assume Leopard forgot to delete it in this case, or somehow it got installed after Leopard was installed.
