Blinking world at start up

I wanted to use Disk Warrior today on my internal hdd so I switched my start-up disk to my external hdd and tried to restart. I only get a blinking world icon on the screen. I tried to boot from the Disk Warrior cd as well as the OS 9 cd but no luck. I've used Disk Warrior before from the ext. hdd with no problem. Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

You're right. The world icon indicates that the imac was looking for a network drive.
Well, the situation is a non-issue for the moment. I wanted to use Disk Warrior to rebuild the internal hdd as a maintenance procedure, not out of necessity. So my main hdd is basically ok.
What I found was that if I just left the imac 'on' then after about 5-6 minutes the flashing world icon would disappear and a folder would appear with an alternating blinking question mark/faces icon. Then, after about another 5 minutes, the computer would go into boot-up mode using the internal hdd. I've done it twice and the computer has booted successfully both times.
What I still don't understand is why I can't boot from either the OS 9 cd or the Disk Warrior cd. The computer sees the OS 9 cd and its contents. And I can choose it from the Start-up Disk option in the Control Panel. I can't seem to load the Disk Warrior cd. I suspect that there may be a problem with the combo drive. But that'll be a question for another day.
Thanks anyway for the help.

  • Blinking world...PLEASE HELP!!!

my computer won't start up, I have a gray screen with a blinking world on it.

    Hi,
since the Optio-key obviously doesn't brought up the possibility to boot from your harddisk, there seems to be more 'defect'.
To verify if the OSX system on yozr harddisk is still intact or can be repaired, you need the OSX DVD 1 to boot from it (using the 'C'-key) and either repair the harddisk if needed and/or repeat the procedure with the Startup Volume.
Any chance to borrow a compatible (for Intel MacBooks) OSX DVD 1 from someone ?
Beware, it has to be a disk that came with an Intel MacBook, no retail version or from another Mac-line (iMac, Macbook Pro, etc.) because they are not compatible.
If not, you have to wait. Sorry
    Stefan

  • I have a white screen and blinking world?

I have a white screen and a blinking world .HELP!

Somehow a network disc has gotten selected as your startup disk. Hold the option key at start up and you should be presented with the boot screen, choose your internal hdd and once it starts go into preferences>startup disk and set the internal as your start up drive.

  • Blinking World Icon (on start)

picked my iMac 27" up from local Apple store after having Genius' run diagnostics (due to a continuously running fan). Now when i start the computer a grey screen shows (2min), then a blinking icon of the World (3min), only to load the desktop after 5 minutes. What is happening?

Restart the machine holding down the Option key.  When the boot manager comes up, select your internal Hard drive.  It should boot as normal.  After that on subsequent reboots, it should find the drive and boot up quickly.

  • Blinking Earth on Start Up

I usually don’t restart very often.
On restart of my G5 iMac rev A,
I got a Blinking Earth- maybe 3 times.
then a Blinking smiling Mac alternating between a folder with a question mark, 3 times.
My regular start up comes on right after that.
I got this before and after 10.4.4 and 10.4.5
I did DU and DW before and after with no problems.
Everything is working well, but a Blinking Earth!
I know the alternating means it’s looking for the HD.
I really don’t want to reinstall the system.

    Hi Woodie,
glad I could be of help with the other problem.
With the iBook it could not only be the logic board but it could also be a failing hard drive or even a severely corrupted disk directory.
You may want to try booting from your 10.2 disks or the system restore disk and running Disk Utility to determine if there is a problem with the drive or not.
Read through step 1 of the following FAQ for more explicit information on how to do this. Don't worry about the other steps listed in the FAQ, just concentrate on step 1.

  • HP Pavilion DV7-1428ca _ CAPS + NUM LOCK Continually Blinks + Will not Start up Black Screen

Would appreciate any suggestions on the issue I am encountering.
I have an HP Pavilion DV7-1428ca that was left powered on, so it went into Safe mode (screen goes blank). Once I came back to my Laptop hitting any key would take out of of the Safe mode however this time it did not. It remained with black screen irregardless of buttons pressed.
Had booted and can hear the fan and hdd go for the 2secs then it stops to a Black Screen with the "CAPS + NUM LOCK" Continually Blinking. Tried to Hard Boot several times but the same thing re-occurs.
It does not seem to be blinking in a series a code, just a steady blink (every sec) for both the CAPS + NUM Lock for as long as I leave it on. HP Site provides a chart from 1-6 series of blink codes which does not seem to apply to me.
Being out of Warranty I am hesitant in bringing it to a local repair shop without trying any alternate trouble shooting first.
    Thanks

    Hi,
First of all, shutdown the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter unplugged, remove the battery, and then hold down the Power button for a full minute.  Plug in the AC Adapter ( leave the battery out ) and see if the notebook will start.

  • Blinking globe when start up?

this usually doesnt happen but lately when i start up my mac a blinking globe appears for about 1 min. then goes away?

    roam,
The OP's problem is similar but not the same as the previous topic you allude to. The OP has a Network blinking icon and not a flashing question mark on a folder.
Just wanted to clarify. Similar troubleshooting but this is a seperate issue from what was posted in the other topic.

  • World at start up

I am new to this Mac Experience and far SO FREAKING GOOD today is my 5th day and I haven't sleep the way I should but I have a question.
Whenever I boot or reboot my computer an icon of a world flashing for almost a minute before I get the apple logo and then the machine starts, coming from windows I am used to waiting for my machine to star up, i was just wondering what that was.
I am using a MacMIni 1,66 Core Duo and 512 RAM

The flashing world icon at startup means the computer is looking for a network startup disk. You should open System Preferences -> Startup Disk and re-select your internal hard drive. This should shorten your startup times.

  • Z10 app world not starting

Hi there. Same problem, my app world gets stuck on the screen with the circle. Have restarted, taken out battery and sim, no change
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

This is most likely due to a app update issue. The BB Music workaround should fix thhe problem.
Go to BB Music. Tap the three dots and selet blackberry world. Go to My World and them My Apps and Check for updates. Post this, the app world should function normally.

  • Apps blink and wont start

iphone 4 ..page with skype, pingchat, and facebook app would bring up the app. blinks. what is the problem?

You could try a Reset, hold both Home and Power buttons for about 15 seconds, let iPhone turn off itself, and then it will restart. See if your Apps function now. If not, click App Store app, find a Free app, a Free game would be nice. Install the free app on your iPhone. See if your Apps work now.

  • What do the flashing symbols mean when i start my IMAC

When I start my desktop 10.4.11, I get  a blinking world symbol, which after about a minute changes to a blinking folder with a question mark in it & alternates with a folder with the finder symbol in it. After a couple minutes, I get my desktop, as normal. Does this mean anything or just some kind of configuration?

First fill out your profile so we know what machine and OS you are running. Go to System preferences > Startup Disk and click on (highlight) your startup disk.

  • Updated my clamshell's firmware but it's not starting up anymore

    Hi,
I've decided to update my old OS 9.04 G3 clamshell to either OS 9.2 or OS X to get more use out of it. Having read all the past discussion on various forums, I knew that I had to update to OS 9.1 first, then update the firmware to 4.17, then update again to OS 9.2 and then OS 9.2.2. I got past the first stage of installing OS 9.1 and proceeded to install the firmware and now the computer won't start! It was showing a blinking world and now it's showing an alternating question mark and 2 faces. How do help it to choose the right start up disk?
Thanks in advance. Any and all advice appreciated.

Figured it out....I panicked and posted too soon my question. I'm actually not used to using OS 9 anymore.

  • Media Encoder making 4K output file 'blink'... What is going on?

Working off Premiere CC. I have a 4K sequence displaying two 1080p videos side-by-side to compare quality between HEVC and H.264. Effects includes dissolves, freeze frames, and word labels created with Premiere's title maker.
Watching all the way through in Premiere timeline on my new Mac Pro it works fine. All video loaded, audio playing back, everything is great.
Ctrl+M, settings include Quicktime, Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) (have also tried Uncompressed YUV 10 bit 4:2:2 as an alternative to no avail), 3840x2160, 29.97, Progressive, Square Pixels, check box on 'Render at Maximumm Depth and 'Use Maximum Render Quality'. Queue it up, hit play and the video encodes fine for a while. Then, during a random transition, the little preview monitor on the encoder starts blinking! Sometimes the top half of the screen, sometimes the entire screen. Upon review of the final output shows that the preview was telling the truth.
    Help! What is going on?!

    Hi bgmc101,

    Hello Kevin,
Thanks for getting back to me. It's not actually HEVC. We load in the uncompressed AVI clips into Premiere instead. If they were real HEVC then Premiere wouldn't even let me import them, yes?
Right! I was confused about how you even imported the footage.
    bgmc101 wrote:
The blinking does not start until 50 seconds to a minute in, and randomly persists through the rest of the video. We've had to export 30 to 40 second segments of the video and stitch them together using our stuff... not the most favorable workflow.
    Any ideas?
Are you exporting via the Export button (from Premiere Pro) or the Queue button (AME)? Does it work using the other method?
    Thanks,
    Kevin
