Blinking World Icon (on start)

picked my iMac 27" up from local Apple store after having Genius' run diagnostics (due to a continuously running fan). Now when i start the computer a grey screen shows (2min), then a blinking icon of the World (3min), only to load the desktop after 5 minutes. What is happening?

Restart the machine holding down the Option key.  When the boot manager comes up, select your internal Hard drive.  It should boot as normal.  After that on subsequent reboots, it should find the drive and boot up quickly.

  • Help !The world icon at start up

I've never had a problem with my Powerbook G4. Yesterday, I get this world icon that blinks at startup and won't go away. What's the deal? No new downloads. No new software. Tons of memory and disc space. Please help

Hi, Michael, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I think what's happened is that your Startup Disk preference has gotten corrupted somehow, and you just need to redesignate the desired OS for startup. Start up from your Tiger installer DVD and open System Preferences>Startup Disk. Select the copy of Tiger on your internal hard drive as your startup OS, and then close System Prefs.
Now open Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select the hard drive (the line with the drive manufacturer's name and model number in it) and click the First Aid tab. Click the Repair Disk button. If any problems are reported to have been repaired, run the Repair Disk routine repeatedly until a "clean" run is achieved (no problems found or fixed).
Restart the Powerbook, holding down the trackpad button during startup until the DVD is ejected. The Powerbook should then start up normally.

  • Flashing World Icon at Start Up

is this doomsday? i have a feeling it is.
i was having network/internet problems (i.e., not connecting to net) with my imac. after trouble shooting external hardware and cables, i decided to restart the network. i've never done that before, so i figured maybe that would be the magic key.
now, however, all i get is an icon of the world in the middle of a gray screen, with no start up or noise. how bad is it? do i just need to boot from disk? did i just lose everything?

how do i get it back to normal mode,
Restart and hold down the "option" key. Eventually, you'll see the icon for various system folders on any startup disks you might have attached. Choose your hard drive and then hit the "continue" arrow. Last time I used it, it was the arrow that pointed to the right. Once you're booted to the HD, open up your System Preferences and choose "Startup Disk", and set it to boot from your hard drive.
Also, you can use the OS X installer DVD that came with your laptop: hold down the "c" key. When it boots to the installer, one of the menu items is "Startup Disk". Choose it, and choose the correct hard drive for startup.
and how can i trouble shoot my initial network problem?
What kind of connection is it, and what's it doing? That will make troubleshooting a lot easier.

  • Blinking world at start up

I wanted to use Disk Warrior today on my internal hdd so I switched my start-up disk to my external hdd and tried to restart. I only get a blinking world icon on the screen. I tried to boot from the Disk Warrior cd as well as the OS 9 cd but no luck. I've used Disk Warrior before from the ext. hdd with no problem. Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance.

You're right. The world icon indicates that the imac was looking for a network drive.
Well, the situation is a non-issue for the moment. I wanted to use Disk Warrior to rebuild the internal hdd as a maintenance procedure, not out of necessity. So my main hdd is basically ok.
What I found was that if I just left the imac 'on' then after about 5-6 minutes the flashing world icon would disappear and a folder would appear with an alternating blinking question mark/faces icon. Then, after about another 5 minutes, the computer would go into boot-up mode using the internal hdd. I've done it twice and the computer has booted successfully both times.
What I still don't understand is why I can't boot from either the OS 9 cd or the Disk Warrior cd. The computer sees the OS 9 cd and its contents. And I can choose it from the Start-up Disk option in the Control Panel. I can't seem to load the Disk Warrior cd. I suspect that there may be a problem with the combo drive. But that'll be a question for another day.
    Thanks anyway for the help.

  • At start up I get a white screen then eventually a blinking folder icon with a question mark in the middle

Help!  As of today, my iMac will not boot up.  When I turn it on I get a blank white screen then, after about a minute, a blinking folder icon with a question mark in the middle.

Find your original install disk, insert it and re-boot holding the "C" key during startup. It will take longer but should boot. Then you need to select Disk Utilityfrom the Menu Bar. Do a Repair Disk on your hard drive. When it finishes re-boot normally.

  • Blinking world...PLEASE HELP!!!

my computer won't start up, I have a gray screen with a blinking world on it.

    Hi,
since the Optio-key obviously doesn't brought up the possibility to boot from your harddisk, there seems to be more 'defect'.
To verify if the OSX system on yozr harddisk is still intact or can be repaired, you need the OSX DVD 1 to boot from it (using the 'C'-key) and either repair the harddisk if needed and/or repeat the procedure with the Startup Volume.
Any chance to borrow a compatible (for Intel MacBooks) OSX DVD 1 from someone ?
Beware, it has to be a disk that came with an Intel MacBook, no retail version or from another Mac-line (iMac, Macbook Pro, etc.) because they are not compatible.
If not, you have to wait. Sorry
    Stefan

  • Late 2009 MBP 13" rebooting to blinking folder icon with questionmark

My late 2009 MacBook Pro 13" is rebooting into a blinking folder icon with questionmark at least twice a week.
Some further Information: this happens when the Notebook is in sleep mode. today the MB rebooted about 1-2 h after closing the lid. sometimes this takes longer, usually sometimes at night. after the reboot the EFI shows a flashing folder icon with a questionmark. the notebook gets insanely hot and the fans are spinning at full speed.
No Messages at that time in the Console Logs.
After turning the MacBook off and on again it boots just fine into Yosemite.
Hardware: Mid 2009 MacBook Pro 13" 2,55 Ghz 8 GB RAM OCZ Vertex 2 SSD
    Any Ideas?

  • Flashing world icon, sad mac & question mark folder

Hi. Since installing 10.4.3 my system won't boot. I downloaded and installed the update then restarted the machine, the screen go's dull grey and then a square icon with the world inside it start to flash, a few seconds after that a sad mac/question mark folder flashes then the system appears to start. The disk spins up, the Apple logo appears then after a few more seconds the disk graudually grinds to a halt and the system shuts itself down. Why would this be happening, someone told me that it sounds like it's trying to netboot (whatever that may be) How can I resolve this issue and get my system back? Thanks.

Try holding down option (alt) at boot to get the open firmware boot selection screen then select your internal drive as the book disk. After start up completes (if it does) go to System Prefs/Startup Disk and reselect the internal disk, restart and it should be fine.

  • I have a white screen and blinking world?

I have a white screen and a blinking world .HELP!

Somehow a network disc has gotten selected as your startup disk. Hold the option key at start up and you should be presented with the boot screen, choose your internal hdd and once it starts go into preferences>startup disk and set the internal as your start up drive.

  • Imac G5 ALS shows grey screen with blinking folder icon on startup

Helping a friend - her imac G5 got the blinking folder icon with question mark and grey screen and then wouldn't start. She had OS 10.4.11. I booted from install disk successfully- Disk Util said No repairs Necessary. Disk Warrior hung (never had that happen before). Performed Safe Boot. Multiple reboots were all successful.
But a few days later, it happened again. Then I did a clean install of 10.5 and all software updates. Restored her user folder from a clone I'd made before starting. All seemed well.
Now, the grey screen with folder question mark still occurs fairly often. If she restarts, she does get booted. (so far anyway)
My question: what do I need to do to resolve the grey screen with blinking folder icon on startup?
Additionally, the computer is slower than before. Does Leopard run slower on these machines than Tiger? (I'd already advised her to get more ram)
    Thanks for your help!

The blinking folder means just that, it can't find an OS to boot to. Tray zapping the PRAM and it wouldn't hurt to run Rember and if the RAM checks out, she might want to add some, 512 is really a minimum, and Leopard should really have at least 1GB.

  • What does a blinking folder icon with a question mark mean when turning on computer?

When I turn on my Mac Book Pro all I get is a blinking forder icon with a question mark in it in the middle of the screen. What does this mean and how can I fix it?

Your Mac is not able to find a system folder to boot from so it displays the question mark.

  • HT5449 In my iPad I can easily switch languages by hitting the world icon.   I have it set up to switch betwee english and spanish.  I can use both in  one document.   Is there any way to do this on the mAC other than go to system preferences?

When I am dictating on my ipad, I can switch back and forth between languages by clicking the world icon.  On the MAC it seems as though I have to go to system preferences and switch language there.   That is a little cumbersome,  Is there a way of switching on the MAC?
    Paul

System Preferences/Language & Text/Input Sources - Select the languages you want and then Show Input menu in menu bar. This allows you to switch back and forth from the menu bar.
