Block P2P software using ASA-AIP-SSM-20 module

Hello,
I have got a question about blocking P2P traffic on ASA AIP module. I have searched the forums and all I could find were solutions using regex, port block, MPF, but no AIP implementation example.
Could anyone point me in the right direction please ?
Many thanks,
      Martin

Hello Paps,
Many thanks for your reply. I was searching the web like crazy for some solutions using IPS and it never occured to me that I could just simply look for the signature files on Cisco website.
Thank you very much again
With regards,

  • Cisco IPS 4240 VS Cisco ASA AIP SSM-10 Modula

I'm looking to replace another vendor's IPS system we have at our company. We do have an ASA 5510 in our envionment currently.
Considering I don't need the extra bandwidth of the IPS 4240 series and the AIP SSM-10 requires an ASA 5510 what are the differences?

Operationally the AIP-SSM1 and the 4240 run the same software, so they work pretty much the same.
The AIP-SSM inside the ASA is less expensive alternateive, but becuase it sits inside an ASA there is more to configure and manage (the ASA plus the sensor), The ASA also has some built in inspections that may filter some traffic/attacks from being seen at the AIP-SSM sensor.

  • Failure to Upgrade the software of my AIP-SSM-20

    Dear all,
I have failed to upgrade the software of my AIP-SSM-20 on the ASA. The AIP-SSM-20 had an Image of version IPS-K9-5.1-7-E1.pkg and I tried to upgrade it to IPS-K9-6.1-1-E2.pkg but after the upgrade the AIP-SSM-20 became unusable. I can no longer log on  to the IPS Module from the ASA. When I initiated a connection to the module with session 1 command, the systems says card in slot 1 did not respond to system request. I decided to restored the system image from the ASA by using the hw-module module 1 recover configure and hw-module module 1 recover boot commands but has so far failed. When  I issued the command hw-module module 1 boot command, the status of the IPS shows recover and would be in that state even for days. And my TFTP server shows that it is transfering the images to the IPS.
I don't know where I have gone wrong and I would be very happy if somebody can give me a procedure that would help me to re-image the software of the IPS.
Any help would be highly appreciated.

Halijen has already send you a link to reimage, let me briefly answer what a system image and upgrade files are and the difference between them
The System Image files are meant to be used only when a complete erasing of the sensor's image is needed.  This is generally because the installed files were corrupted, or so old that it would be easier to start over and make it look like it came from the factory; than to use the standard "upgrade" files. So in case you are doing reimaging than use .img files which are system reimage files
In more than 90% of the cases, most customers will want to "upgrade" rather than do a System Image.  The "upgrade" is done from within the sensor itself, and will both load the higher version as well as convert your current configuration to work with the newer version.it uses .pkg files
A usual poblem with the System Re-imaging process is that the card winds up in a boot loop because of an error.  When ROMMON detects an error it reboots and tries the same steps again which usually winds up with the same error which causes a reboot, etc.....
So determining if the card is in a reboot loop, and what the error is would be the next step in your debugging process.
Execute "debug module-boot".  Enter "hw-module module 1 recover stop".   Wait for a few minutes, and then enter "hw-module module 1 recover boot".
The output from ROMMON on the SSM will be seen on your ASA connection.Look at the configuration being passed to the SSM's ROMMON and look for any bad entries.Watch to see if it able to download the System Image file, or if it continuously reboots.
If it continuously reboots, then look to see what error message is seen just prior to the reboot.
    Some common problems:
    1) Typos in IP address, gateway, tftp server IP, or system image filename.
    2) If the tftp server is on the same subnet as the SSM's IP Address, then try leaving the Gateway address blank since it is not needed.
    3) Remember that the IP Address is for the external interface of the SSM.  So be sure you are using an address that is applicable for the network where you are pluggin in the SSM's external interface.
    4) If the TFTP Server is on another subnet, then be sure there is a route to the other network.  If having to route back through the ASA, then ensure that the ASA will allow TFTP packets to pass through the ASA.  (The ASA could wind up blocking the TFTP packets depending on the ASA configuration)
    5) Be sure the file can be downloaded from the TFTP server.  Check the file permissions, and the directory where the file is located.   From your desktop try to downlaod the file from the tftp server.  This will ensure you are using the correct directory and that the file has correct permissions.  Once common problem is that the file may be /tftpboot/sensorfiles/IPS-SSM_20-K9-sys-1.1-a-6.1-1-E1.img.  But because the tftp server automatically starts in /tftpboot, you may need to NOT specify it for the file and instead just use: sensorfiles/IPS-SSM_20-K9-sys-1.1-a-6.1-1-E1.img
    6) Check to make sure the file is not corrupted by running an md5sum and checking it against the value listed on cisco's web site.

  • Using ASA5510 AIP-SSM in IDS mode

    Hi,
I' ve a Cisco ASA5510 with  AIP-SSM and I wold like to use it like a one-armed IDS for connect them to a span port of a switch in my network,
without the traffic passing through the Firewall.
I've try to configure it and connect the interface inside (fast0/1) to the span port, I create the policy for permit  all the traffic to the  Sensor but it doesn't work, no packet recived on sensor.
    somebody can help me?
    thanks

Unfortunately you can't use the AIP-SSM in an ASA with a spanning switch like you could with the 4200 series appliances.
The reason is that the ASA was built to be a firewall, and no matter how much of that functionality you turn off, it still needs to see TCP and UDP conversations flowing thru the ASA in order to pass that traffic to the AIP-SSM sensor (I tired very hard to see if I could get around this limitation, but you can't).
The best you can hope to do is put the ASA in-line (I know this reduces reliability) and turn off as much of the firewall configs you can. Then you can promisciously monitor the traffic passing thru teh ASA with teh AIP-SSM.
It's not ideal, but it's the cheapest IPS sensor in Cisco's line up right now.

  • Changing time on AIP SSM 10 module.

How can i change the sensors time manually on my AIP-SSM-10 module installed in the ASA 5520 device .. ??
i tried the clock set command but apparently its not supported on AIP-SSM-10 module.
the ASA has the correnct time but the IPS does not...
    any ideas ??
    thanks..

  • Want to block P2P application using ASA5540

I want to block P2P application & IM using ASA with IPS built-in. I dont wanna use the ACL for all the ports because most of the P2P application using dynamic ports.

    Aamir,
You can do this using the application layer inspection on the firewall.
Please take a look at the configuration guide given below.

  • What to expect when ASA AIP SSM reaches maximum throughput?

    Hi,
I'm just curious what happens to traffic when you have an IPS module in an ASA and it reaches the maximum throughput?
Does it allow the traffic & only inspects what it can handle? Or does it "fail" and then either allows all the traffic or block based on "fail-open" or "fail-close" configuration?
    Thanks,
    Brad

When the sensor (SSM or any other sensor) is oversubscribed and the sensor is monitoring Inline, then a portion of the traffic will be Dropped.
The traffic will not be allowed through if it has not been inspected.
The "fail-open", "fail-close", and "bypass" are not relevant when talking about over subscription.
The only time the "fail-open", "fail-close", or "bypass" configurations comes into play is if the sensor can not do ANY analysis (either a failure, or an upgrade in progress).

  • How to block p2p applications(Bittorent like) with AIP-SSM-10?

    Hi,
How to block p2p application using AIP-SSM-10 working with ASA5520?AIP is on promiscuous mode.
    Thanks,
    Siva

There are several signatures that detect p2p, for bit torrent there is 11020.0
    Yahoo triggers: 5539.0, 11200.0, 11212.0, 11217.0 & 11219.0
    etc..
Some are disabled by default though so please ensure you enable the ones that you need.
If you want to block these then you will have to use event actions that work in promiscuous setup for example request block connection and tcp reset. Please note that care must be taken when using these event actions.
For more information about the event actions please refer the link below:

  • Best practices for using Normalizer in ASA and in AIP-SSM

Both PIX OS 7.x and IPS 5.x software have a concept of "traffic normalization". PIX OS on ASA can do virtual reassembly, IPS on SSM (so far as I know) can do physical reassembly and fragmentation of IP packets. Also, both ASA and SSM can do TCP normalization. For example, they both can "check inconsistent retransmissions" and protect against "TTL evasion attacks". I realize that PIX OS has only basic normalization functions and the SSM is much more configurable.
The question is: what are the best practices here? Is it better to disable some IP/TCP PIX OS checks / IPS signatures on ASA and/or SSM? Is it better to use just SSM for traffic normalization? Does anybody has personal experience here?
Also, there is a BugID CSCsd04327 - "ASA all out of order packets are dropped when sending to ssm"
"When ips ssm is inline slowness is reported. show service-policy shows that the number of out of order packets reported match exactly the number of no buffer drops (even with queue-limit option). Performance hit is not the result of tcp normalization (on IPS 5.x ssm) in this case, but rather an issue with asa normalizer."
To me it seems to be more logical to have normalization function on the firewall, but there may be drawbacks in doing this.
So, those who're using ASA with SSM, please share your experience.
    Thx.

Yes, this is almost correct ;)
TCP SRP (Stream Reassemly Processor) is turned OFF on the SSM and cannot be enabled, contrary to 4200 appliances, but IP FRP (Fragmentation Reassembly Processor) is functioning on the SSM.
The testing of 7.2(1) shows the following:
When you configure "policy-map" to send packets to the SSM the "tcp-map" parameter "queue-limit", which has the value of zero by default, is set to an X (the X is unknown). This means that the ASA now only accepts the TCP segments which are sent in the correct order. More specifically, the gaps in SEQs are not allowed anymore. When for example, the ASA receives a TCP segment which has a SEQ within the window, but the previous TCP segment has been lost, it sends an ACK to the sender to enforce retransmition of the lost segment. As a result the sender retransmits both segments. Only after that the ASA forwards both segments to the SSM. This basically means that SSM always sees in-order TCP segments. That it is why SRP is not needed on the SSM.
There are at least two problems however.
The first problem is the performance impact.
ASA now acts almost like a proxy. And, so far as I know, it doesn't support SACK (Selective ACKs). First, when the ASA does TCP SEQ randomization it doesn't change SEQ values within the SACK TCP Option. This simply breakes SACK. Second, even if you turn randomization mechanism OFF, then, I believe, the ASA will not selectively ACK the lost TCP segments, as it simply doesn't support this mechanism.
The second problem is THE SECURITY HOLE.
By default the ASA doesn't check TCP checksums. The 4200 appliances do check by default. But as we now know the SRP is turned OFF on the SSM... So, this means that SSM module can easily be evaded. The hacker only needs to mix attacking traffic with the random TCP segments that have bad TCP checksum. The SSM module will see the mixture of the two and will not recognize the attack. The target host will drop TCP segments with the bad checksums and see only attacking traffic... This has been successfully verified in the lab.
Of course, this security hole can be closed with the "tcp-map" parameter "checksum-verification", but it will definitely has performance impact.
The last note: All of the above has never been documented by Cisco. So, use at your own risk, etc.
I hope, you will read this message, Marcoa. All of this MUST be documented. Once again, the default behaviour of the ASA opens up a big security hole.

  • How ASA forwarding traffic to AIP-SSM

    Hi All,
Can someone help how ASA device forwarding traffic to AIP-SSM? I'm not taking abt Configuration part like Class-map, policy-map and service policy....want to understand the traffic flow from ASA once traffic matched with ACL to AIP-SSM.
From one of Cisoc document, understood that the module using a Cisco Propietary protocol for communicating with ASA appliance.
    ================================================================================================================
    FYR from Cisco Website:
    Q. How does the Cisco ASA AIP-SSM plug into and communicate with the appliance?
    A. The Cisco ASA AIP-SSM plugs directly into the SSM slot in the Cisco ASA appliance's chassis. This provides a direct connection to the appliance's backplane. Once the module is installed, a proprietary protocol runs over the bus and controls data flow and messaging between the module and appliance.
    ================================================================================================================
    Regards,
    S.Vinoth

    Hey ,
as you mentioned above , it uses a cisco Probietary protocol for that communication , there are two interfaces , control channel and data channnel , data channel is where the traffic being forwarded , the backplane is the connection between the ASA and the IPS interface .
    Hope that this helps .
    Mohammad.

  • Do any ASA Inspect statements overlap AIP-SSM functionality?

Are the ASA inspect statements (http, ftp, sunrpc, etc) a duplication of functionality available in the AIP-SSM IPS module? Asked another way, can/should any of the inspect statements be turned off when the AIP-SSM is present?

    Hi Scott,
I have almost same problem of sbgcsd in my customer. I'm deploying two ASA-5512 in failover configuration. One day, after almost 2 months testing project in a lab, when we install in customer's datacenter the systems presented following errors:
      ciscoasa2(config)# failover
            Detected an Active mate
ciscoasa2# Mate NOT PRESENT card in slot 1 is different from mine IPS5512
I tried to discover what was happened with IPS modulo, then I saw error in IPS status: "Unresponsive".

According with Cisco Foruns I tried to "Reloading, Shutting Down, Resetting, and Recovering AIP-SSM" (*) using "hw-module module " command. But unfortunatelly ASA didn't accept this command. See below:
      ciscoasa2# hw-module module 1 reload

What happened with this command (hw-module) ? Maybe is a problem in Software version ? When I entered "sh flash" command I saw that didn't exist any software for AIP-SMM module:

But I am not sure if this image is really the right image do AIP-SSM in ASA#2. But anyway I copy (through a simple TFTP server) from ASA#1 to ASA#2 , but after this, the same problem ramained !
Because I didn't applied the Failover condition to system.
What can I do now ?

  • AIP-SSM Upgrade Procedure

    Hi everybody!
    I have ASA5520 version 8.2(1) with AIP-SSM-20 module
and I want to upgrade AIP-SSM-20 software from version 6.1(3)E3 to 7.0(2)E4
I go to the download site and see the following list:
Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) Recovery Software:
    IPS-K9-r-1.1-a-7.0-2-E4.pkg
            Release Date: 29/Mar/2010
            IPS Recovery Image File
Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) Signature Updates:
    IPS-sig-S481-req-E4.pkg
            Release Date: 31/Mar/2010
            E4 Signature Update S481
Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) System Software:
    IPS-SSM_20-K9-sys-1.1-a-7.0-2-E4.img
            Release Date: 29/Mar/2010
            IPS-SSM_20 System Image File
Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) System Upgrades
    IPS-K9-7.0-2-E4.pkg
            Release Date: 29/Mar/2010
IPS 7.0 Major Upgrade File (All Supported Platforms Except AIM-IPS and NME-IPS)
    IPS-engine-E4-req-7.0-2.pkg
            Release Date: 29/Mar/2010
            IPS E4 Engine Update
I am somewhat confused by the number of files and want to ask what the procedure/sequence I should follow to upgrade?

This is the file that you would like to use to upgrade it:
Intrusion Prevention System  (IPS) System Upgrades
    IPS-K9-7.0-2-E4.pkg
    To upgrade:
    1) Upload the "IPS-K9-7.0-2-E4.pkg" file through IDM
    2) IDM --> Configuration --> Sensor Management --> Update Sensor --> choose Update is located on this client --> choose the "IPS-K9-7.0-2-E4.pkg" file --> hit the "Update Sensor" button.
It will take a while (around 20 minutes) to upgrade the sensor, so don't panic if it doesn't come back up in "UP" status straight away.
    Hope that helps.
