Blocking of the handset in the even of misuse

I am extremely sorry to learn that the facilty of blocking the Nokia handset from misuse in the event of it being stolen etc is not available in India which could be the largest market for Nokia. Thus, a thief can easily remove the sim card and start using the handset by inserting a new simcard. Even the police authorities would be by and large ineffective in such cases. In order to prevent this, the mobiles should carry a unique identification number which the owner can activate and block the handset from unauthorised use. This would enhance the confidence of Nokia mobile users and should go a long way in expanding the market. What is more saddening, this facility is available in other countries, I Understand.

GSM by nature protects itself from such things. You do not need a fancy handset.
In GSM there is three numbers that are sometimes referred to as the GSM Trinity.
MSISDN - Your cellular number
IMSI - Your SIM card serial number
IMEI - Your handset serial number
You can have any of these blacklisted - which means that it will no longer be accepted onto the network or any other networks that shares blacklisting information.
For example, if someone steals your phone and you ask your operator to blacklist it and give you a new handset with your old number they will do the following :
See what the IMSI (SIM card serial) and IMEI (handset serial) was that you used with your MSIDN (cell number) before it was stolen. This is retrieved from any activity you had on the network like Voice calls/SMS/MMS/GPRS. They will then blacklist the IMEI and IMSI (so the old SIM card will not work anymore and the old handset will also not work on the network).
They will then give you a new SIM card and bind your old MSISDN (cell number) to the new IMSI (SIM). You are then ready to use it in a new handset (IMEI).
These things was thought out right at the beginning of GSM back in the 80's to cater for all sorts of scenarios involving crime and also user flexibility.
For example, did you know that you can have two SIM cards that are bound to the SAME number? This is handy if you have a built in GSM car phone. Your network provider can give the IMSI in the car phone preference over the one in the handset (phone in your pocket).
When the user gets into the car and starts it and the car phone logs into the GSM network the network will kick the handset in the users pocket from the network (which will continually try to log back on). Once the car is switched off the handset may log onto the network again.
These days with Bluetooth and newer technologies things like that are no longer used that much, but back in the 80's and 90's it was quite convenient.
GSM is a very clever system. I have worked with it a lot and you get to know it and respect it very quickly.
Knowledge should be your Advisor when you need help.

  • Trying to install/format an INTERNAL hard drive using Disk Utility gives me "Error: -69760: Unable to write to the last block of the device".   Is that a hardware problem and what could be done about it?

    *** PLEASE NOTE*** - This is a query about an INTERNAL HDD not an external one. Thanks.
    My Mac is a late 2009 model and the current hard drive recently failed. So I bought a new one, exactly the same, albeit 750gb instead of 500gb. The HDD is a Seagate Momentus 7200. Before the my current drive failed I made a time machine back up to an external USB HDD. I've inserted the HDD into the bottom of my Mac, plugged in the USB and started my machine pressing the 'Option' ([ALT]) key. I go into Disk Utility to try and format the new HDD by creating a new partition but I keep getting the messages,
    "Error: -69760: Unable to write to the last block of the device"
    or
    "POSIX: could not allocate memory"
    This is actaully the third HDD I've tried. The first was another Seagate Momentus 7200 500gb, but this time it was a newer model (model number ended in 423AS instead of 420AS - the new one I am trying ends with 420AS, which is the same as the current HDD). I then tried a Western Digital drive but that one didn't even show up in DU. Forums and tech support are suggesting it's faults with the HDDs but surely not three in a row?
    Could this be an issue with another part of my Mac?
    Is there anything else I can do to format the HDD, have I missed a crucial step?

    Did you ever get a resolution to this issue?
    I am having that exact error with a new 512GB SSD from Crucial, in a 15" MBP mid-2010.
    I really wonder now if the stupid SATA cable could be bad - causing the initial SSD fail.  I am replacing it with the EXACT same drive, and getting that "last block" error when i partition in the GUI or from command-line.
    thanks!

  • Get blocker from the (self) deadlock trace file

    Hi,
    Recently I had an issue on a 10.2.0.4 single instance database where deadlocks were occurring. The following test case reproduces the problem (I create three parent tables, one child table with indexed foreign keys to all three parent tables and a procedure which performs an insert into the child table in an autonomous transaction):
    create table parent_1(id number primary key);
    create table parent_2(id number primary key);
    create table parent_3(id number primary key);
    create table child( id_c number primary key,
                       id_p1 number,
                       id_p2 number,
                       id_p3 number,
                       constraint fk_id_p1 foreign key (id_p1) references parent_1(id),
                       constraint fk_id_p2 foreign key (id_p2) references parent_2(id),
                       constraint fk_id_p3 foreign key (id_p3) references parent_3(id)
    create index i_id_p1 on child(id_p1);
    create index i_id_p2 on child(id_p2);
    create index i_id_p3 on child(id_p3);
    create or replace procedure insert_into_child as
    pragma autonomous_transaction;
    begin
      insert into child(id_c, id_p1, id_p2, id_p3) values(1,1,1,1);
      commit;
    end;
    insert into parent_1 values(1);
    insert into parent_2 values(1);
    commit;And now the action that causes the deadlock:
    SQL> insert into parent_3 values(1);
    1 row created.
    SQL> exec insert_into_child;
    BEGIN insert_into_child; END;
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-00060: deadlock detected while waiting for resource
    ORA-06512: at "SCOTT.INSERT_INTO_CHILD", line 4
    ORA-06512: at line 1My question is: how can I determine which table the insert into CHILD was waiting on? It could be waiting on PARENT_1, PARENT_2, PARENT_3, a combination of them or even on CHILD if I tried to insert a duplicate primary key in CHILD. Since we have the full testcase we know that it was waiting on PARENT_3 (or better said, it was waiting for the "parent" transaction to perform a commit/rollback), but is it possible to determine that solely from the deadlock trace file? I'm asking that because to pinpoint the problem I had to perform redo log mining, pl/sql tracing with DBMS_TRACE and manual debugging on a clone of the production database which was restored to a SCN just before the deadlock occurred. So, I had to do quite a lot of work to get to the blocker table and if this information is already in the deadlock trace file, it would have saved me a lot of time.
    Below is the deadlock trace file. From the "DML LOCK" part I guess that the child table (tab=227042) holds a mode 3 lock (SX), all the other three parent tables have mode 2 locks (SS), but from this extract I can't see that parent_3 (tab=227040) is blocking the insert into child:

          ----------------------------------------Thank you in advance for any comments,
    Jure

    Hi Jonathan,
    thank you very much for your reply which more than answers my question. I think it actually clears a lot of doubts I had about TX locks, since your mentioning of "undo segment header transaction table" pointed me in the right direction for further research on this topic (honestly, I didn't know what's "behind" TX locks). So if I understood correctly, to determine which table is the blocker (in the testcase presented above), you have to have some kind of history of executed SQL statements (e.g. by mining redo logs)?
    The statement you wrote:
    At this point, and with your example, the waiting session is waiting on a TX (transaction) lock - this means it has not idea (and no interest) in the actual data involved, it is merely waiting for an undo segment header transaction table slot to clear. and the example with the savepoint you gave, made me think of some of the consequences of that behaviour. That is probably the reason why it is not possible to get the "blocker" table from v$lock (although sometimes it's possible to get it from v$session.row_wait_obj#) when a session tries to change a row another session holds in exclusive mode, e.g.:
    create table t1 (id number);
    insert into t1 values (1);
    commit;
    Session 126:
    SID = 126> update t1 set id=2 where id=1;
    1 row updated.
    Session 146:
    SID = 146> update t1 set id=2 where id=1;
    {session hangs}
    In a separate session:
    SQL> SELECT   CASE
      2                  WHEN TYPE = 'TM'
      3                     THEN (SELECT object_name
      4                             FROM user_objects
      5                            WHERE object_id = l.id1)
      6               END object_name,
      7                  SID, TYPE, id1, id2, lmode, request, BLOCK
      8          FROM v$lock l
      9         WHERE SID IN (126, 146)
    10     ORDER BY SID, TYPE, 1
    11  /
    OBJECT_NAME    SID TY        ID1        ID2      LMODE    REQUEST      BLOCK
    T1             126 TM      68447          0          3          0          0
                   126 TX     262153       4669          6          0          1
    T1             146 TM      68447          0          3          0          0
                   146 TX     262153       4669          0          6          0The only thing I can tell from this output is that session 146 is trying to get a TX lock in exclusive mode, and session 126 is blocking it, the reason of the blocking being unknown from this view alone.
    Since I'd like to get a better understanding on the mechanics behind this (e.g. why the blocked session can't know the segment that is waiting for, since it has to go to the same segment's data block to find the address of the undo segment header transaction table slot? ; can we get the content/structure of the transaction table in the data block - probably by making a block dump?), do you have any source where a more in depth explanation what happens "behind the scenes" is available (perhaps in Oracle Core?)? Some time ago I found a link on your blog http://jonathanlewis.wordpress.com/2010/06/21/locks/ which points to Franck Pachot's article where he nicely explains the various locking modes: http://knol.google.com/k/oracle-table-lock-modes#. There I also found Kyle Hailey's presentation about locks http://www.perfvision.com/papers/09_enqueues.ppt where slide 23 nicely depicts what's going on when acquiring TX locks. Of course I'll try to search on my own, but any other source (especially from an authority like you) is more than welcome.
    Thank you again and regards,
    Jure

  • 9i Forms on XP: the even more final insult

    There is a bug when you run 9i Forms on XP. Intermittently the mouse navigation fails: we cannot navigate to records in multi-orw blocks using the mouse on to individual fields in a single row block. However, the next_record key still works and the tab button still works. This is only on XP: the application runs fine on the older Windows NT stations.
    The only, the only, reason we upgraded our apps to 9i was because Oracle de-supported 6i on XP (a position later reversed but after we'd spent the money). And now it turns out that 9i Forms on XP has this major usability flaw. Our users are spitting tacks.
    There is apparently a workaround: use IE 6.0 native instead of JInitiator but then we can't use WebUtil and our application is truly busted anyway.
    Just what I needed on a Friday evening! If you have been, thanks for listening.
    Stay lucky, APC

    I raised an iTAR on Friday evening, so I don't expect to hear back from sometime (it's currently WIP). If you're interested the TAR number is #3433696.995.
    There is a known bug which sounds jolly similar and its number is #2997923.

    I haven't tried the Sun plug-in yet. That is next on my list of things to try.
    Pedro
    Thanks for that useful doc id. At least there are some folks out there with the same problem. My sysadmin had downloaded patch 3 but not installed it yet. I have set them to it as a matter of urgency. I will also look at getting the latest versiuon of JInitiator.
    Cheers, APC

  • Ive got a Mac Pro bought seconf hand, It doesn't allow me to update as the username is blocked to the previous owner, it appears off and can't change it, the box goes directly to password. I have changed the computer username and password but the problem

    Ive got a Mac Pro 2010, bought second hand through eBay. When it comes to update the software, the username is blocked to the previous owner. It appears off and the box goes directly to password. I have tried to reset then to log in in apple store with my login but didn't help. I would appreciate any tips to sort it out
    Thanks fellas

    That machine did not ship with Mountain Lion (Mac OS X 10.8), so that means the copy of Mountain Lion on the machine was purchased by the former owner and is non-transferable. It is permanently linked to his/her Apple ID, so you cannot update or reinstall it.
    What you need to do (which the seller should have done for you) is reinstall the original system that that machine came with. I believe that would be Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6). What you need to do is reinstall that system from the original disks. If the seller did not provide those disks, you can call Apple and get them replaced for a small shipping and handling fee.

  • Delivery block in the schedule lines.

    Hi,
    Mine is a MTO scenario. I am using planning strategy 50. So a planned order ---> production order will be created against MRP run  against each sales order.
    When i am placing a delivery block at the header the system is working fine. Its deleting the planned order(converted production order).
    when I am placing a delivery block at the schedulle line its not working fine. its not deleting the underlined planned order or production order.
    what configuration should I do to make this work.......

    Hi,
    Look at the help (press F1) on  the field confirmation block at SPRO-> Sales and Distribution ->Basic functions ->Availability check and Transfer of Requirements ->Tranfer of Requirements -> Block quantity confirmation in delivery blocks ->Reasons for and Scope of Delivery Blocks: Transfer of Req. blocks.
    It looks applying delivery block at schdule line level will not delete the passed requirements. This is standard SAP behavior. If you want to change this nature, then you may need to use an User-exit.
    Following is description given for the field confirmation block;
    Confirmation block
    Indicates whether the system, in addition to blocking delivery, also blocks the confirmation of order quantities after an availability check during sales order processing.
    Example
    You may want to block confirmation of sales orders where the creditworthiness of the customer is in question. In this case, you set the confirmation block for the delivery block that relates to credit problems. During sales order entry, when you enter a delivery block because of credit problems, the system, after you save the order, does not confirm any quantities for delivery. In this way, the goods remain available for other customers.
    Note
    If, before you save a sales order, you look at the schedule line overview, you can see what the system would confirm, if the block were not set. However, as soon as you save the sales order, the confirmed quantities are automatically reset to zero.
    Dependencies
    If you enter the delivery block at header level, the system transfers the desired delivery quantity for all schedule lines in the requirement. The confirmed quantity is deleted. This function is not available when you enter the delivery block at schedule line level.

  • Multiple data blocks on the same canvas

    Forms newbie question:
    Is it possible to have 2 data blocks with two different sets of transactional triggers (ON-UPDATE, ON-LOCK, etc.) on the same canvas?
    I've got an example where i've got two data blocks (one sourced from a view, and one that is a CTL block) on the same canvas. The block sourced from the view is working fine. When I make updates, they are reflected, etc. But, i've got one field in the control block that I need to update from as well, and I can't seem to get it (or any of the CTL block items) to show up as "updateable", regardless of the set_item_property....theyre always grayed out.
    Do i need to take the user to a new canvas to be able to utilize the update of the ctl field?

    A second canvas is not needed. Normally, control-block items are always updateable, so there is something going on in your form to prevent it.
    > I can't seem to get it (or any of the CTL block items) to show up as "updateable",
    regardless of the set_item_property....theyre always grayed out.
    What... Is there code someplace in the form that sets them to Enabled, false? If that is the case, then to get them working again, besides setting Enabled to true, you also must set Updateable and Navigable to Property_True. (This is documented at the end of the on-line help on Set_Item_Property.)

    How do I get the iTunes festival to play on my Apple TV in the evening, as I work during the day and can't watch it at 4:00pm?  I have the app installed on my iPad and can't get it to play!

    I haven't received an answer. I hope someone can answer this because it's an ongoing problem that I can't play some CDs on my MacBook Air (see my original post for the details). Anyone? Please? Thanks in advance!

  • While using Skype on my mac pro the screen freezes and splits in two and the left hand side shifts to the right and the right shifts to the left with a large black block down the centre, should I take it back to store as it is only a month old??

    I have only had my mac one month and it seems while I use Skype the screen freezes and I cant click on anything and everything on the right hand side of the screen shifts to the left and the left to the right with a back block down the centre and sometimes lines running down the screen over all. As it is almost brand new should I be going back to store to get this problem fixed??

    Yes.  You are still under warranty.  Why waste it?

  • Broadband slowing to a crawl in the evening

    Looking through the posts on this board, my situation is not as bad as what others are experiencing, but frustrating nonetheless. I get very decent speeds at night and during the day, but lately it's become impossible to watch the BBC iPlayer in the evening, even in low resolution (nevermind HD). I'm on broadband Option 3, by the way.
    Here's what speedtest told me just now:
     Download speedachieved during the test was - 1544 Kbps
     For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
     IP Profile for your line is - 7150 Kbps
     I've seen even lower evening download speeds (<1000), while I will easily get 5 or 6000 outside of peak hours. I realise I won't get the same speeds round the clock, but I'd really want to at least be able to use the iPlayer...

    VP = Virtual Path (Allows BT to have more control over traffic aka. Number of users sharing allocated bandwidth) Look at: http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/equip.htm
    RAS = Remote Access Server (Basically where your Internet traffic is routed too after its journey to the exchange and through its backhaul)
    As stated above, both or one of these could be overloaded or a problem so they may direct you to another one.
    Hope this helps
