Blocky and blurred playback of avi files in PRE8.0

I am using 64-bit Windows 7, 4GB RAM, an Intel T4300 Dual Core processor (2.10 GHZ) and an ATI Radeon HD4530 graphics card (512Md dedicated). I have the up to date ATI driver and have updated PRE 8 with the 8.0.1 fix from the Adobe site. I am using a Sony Mini DV camcorder attached to the computer by firewire.
I import my video from the camcorder into PRE 8 using capture. When video is imported it plays back very blocky and blurred on the preview screen and it is much worse on the full screen. However, when the project has been completed and burned to DVD it plays fine on TV. I have also tried playing the same video in Windows Media Player and it plays back fine with this. I may be wrong but it seems to me from this that the problem exists with the video playback facility within PRE 8.0. I have not altered any settings from the default ones set by PRE 8.0 other that to select the widescreen option when creating the project pre-sets. The camcorder is set to record the images in widescreen. I have also rendered the work area.
Are there any settngs or updates to resolve this issue? Is  there a different codec I should use within PRE 8.0?
I would be grateful for any suggestions to resolve this or at least obtain reassurance that I haven't missed anything and I will, for the moment, put up with this until Adobe, or some one else, comes up with a fix.
Thanks.

A couple of things to look at, regarding playback.
1.) do your Clips have a red bar over them in the Timeline? If so, does that bar turn green, when you hit Enter? Do the Clips playback better?
2.) have you looked at changing the Magnification from Fit to 100%? Does that help? Do not know if PrE 8 has added the additional Quality setting, like PrPro has, but if it does, try both Automatic and Highest, to see if that changes things.
3.) look into Hardware Acceleration. If set to min, try max. If max, try min. If either helps, then increment, until the problem returns and then increment up/down to go back.
4.) check your OpenGL settings (probably in your ATI utility.
5.) do you have FFDShow installed (often included with CODEC packs)? That causes no end to the display problems in Adobe programs.
6.) what is your Playback setting in your Preferences?
That is about all that I can think of for now.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Arbitrary limit for  playback of avi files QT 7.04

QT pro player stops without any error indication after about 1.11GB of a 1.37GB avi file. Everything is fine up to that point. VLC plays the whole file to its end.
I saw a post re a 2.0 GB limit. Anyone having the same proplem??

I would wish that people stop using the .avi container.
I suspect a broken time stamp (time code) in your .avi file. Very common problem caused by cutting or pasting to some formats and codecs.
QuickTime Player is very rule "dependent". While other players handle the broken time stamp issue QuickTime Player stops playback when it is told the "end" of the file has been reached.
MPEG Streamclip (free) can repair broken time stamps.
The only file size limit imposed is the formatting used on the hard drive. More modern formatting schemes (HFS or HFS+) have a nearly limitless file size.

  • I downloaded both Morgan and Gspot to convert AVI file - now what?

What do I do to convert my AVI files using either of these two programs?  Actually four programs - I installed three different versions of Morgan.  I was hoping for magic - that I could just drop in my files.  But no.  Apparently I have to do something.  What would that be?
    Thanks!

Hmm . . . comes with a Utility MPEG2 Component ML app with no explanation of what it's for?
The utility app is an "assistant PKG installer." It allows Lion and Mountain Lion users to install the older QT MPEG-2 Playback Component installer PKG file which is not allowed to run on its own under Lion or Mountain Lion since these operating systems already have a QT X only MPEG-2 component embedded in the QT embedded structure. Without this utility you would have to either copy the component from an older system to your Lion or Mountain Lion system, use Pacifist for installation, or manually open the PKG contents and transfer the component to the appropriate component folder.
As to your "discussion" regarding the playback of AVI file types, there are really only two strategies here:
    1) You can add component support so that QT can play the files natively or
    2) You can convert the file contents to compression formats that are natively compatible with the unmodified QT component configuration.
Each user should decide for his or her own self which approach best suits their needs for a particular source file. In most cases, conforming the system's codec component configuration to play the source file directly results in higher video quality since no transcoding takes place but this strategy will not work if a codec which is required is not available for the user's operating system. On the other hand, converter utilities tend to support more built-in codecs and are easier to use since the user does not have to concern him or herself with the nature of the particular source compression formats but at the risk of some potential loss in visual quality. As to what converter to use, once again this is a matter of personal choice. In the case of commercial converters like iSkysoft, the codecs are built in while MPEG Streamclip accesses the host operating system's QT codec component configuration. I personally prefer the free HandBrake app for AVI, MKV, TS, MTS, and M2TS conversions since it has an exceptionally full-featured X.264 GUI with some user options that 97% of users are likely to never use.

  • .avi files and subtitle drag&drop

Is there any video player that can play .avi files and also support drag&drop subtitles? I tried Perian with Quick time and now it plays .avi files perfectly. However still can't drag the subtitles to Quicktime screen. Also I tried Miro and VLC Player. They both lack of 'drag&drop subtitle' function.
I'm new to mac, only 3 days. Maybe there is a trick to do that drag&drop thing. Any help?

  • JMF does not play sound for .avi file and no video for .mov file

    Hi,
I am trying to use JMStudio to transmit media files from one computer to another.
However, when I try to transmit .mov file it only plays audio no video is displayed on other computer.
And when I transmit .avi file I can see the Video on other machine but it does not
    play any sound.
I tried using capture devices like - webcam and mic and they work perfectly fine.
Can anyone please tell me the solution for this.
    Thank you in advance.

I discovered the same problem too..
I think it is a general Format problem.
When i analyzed the tracks in my .avi and .mov files before rtp streaming with jmf, I found each media containing just 1 track..
This track was a video track, no audio at all.
Other formats I tried, like .mpg, revealed both audio and video tracks, and performed perfectly.
I'm still on more research.. will get the solution to you if u don't find one before I'm done..

  • AVI Files conversion in PE - Colors are weird and video is not smooth.

    Hi,
I have an issue with AVI files. I have Sony Digital 8 Camcorder and through a different program I downloaded the tapes and made them into AVI files.
I was trying to make a movie with premiere 7 using these AVI files. The quality was poor. There is no smooth motion of the movies, it was kind of moving frame by frame and also at the end of the movie faces and surrounding colors was weird (as if they are negative etc..)
I chose the out put video quality to be high and format to be NTSC. I have a 3gig ram, Windows vista laptop.
Am I missing something in movie making setting. Can someone help
    Thx...

I have had a similar problem with sony dvd cam.Trying to read old files which were in ima format. accidentally I found the same files stored as MPEG, but Prel El 2 could pick up the files with clarity.
I have found a freeware site winff.org which converted the problematic MPEG files to DVD files with great success.

  • .AVI file has white screen but does have sound...

I have an .AVI file someone sent me which by using QT Pro shows just a white screen but does have audio.
I have Perian installed and it didn't help with the white screen. I have opened it fine in VLC player, and a couple of other media players but my issue is that I want to import the AVI file into iMovie so I can make it into a DVD. However, if I import it into iMovie, it will be the same white screen with audio.
I have searched the web far and wide to find a solution and most are saying it could be only viewable in QT on a PC of all things.
Is there any components out there which will help me with this problem? Any other suggestions?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    RB

But when I selected the problematic AVI file it too appeared with a white screen w/sound in MPEG Streamclip. So I realized it wouldn't help me either.
A white screen usually means the selected video codec is not compatible with the actual file. Normally, I would run a conflict test. Based on your previous posts regarding the compression formats in use and the video codec attempting to perform video playback, my first guess would be that the Perian component is trying to decode a DivX (possibly v5) file. I would probably either temporarily remove the Perian component and see if the AVI file plays or remove and then replace the DivX component (if the latest one is already installed) and see if this changes the component access order so DivX is called for video playback. If you have an older DivX component installed, there may be a conflict issue. (Remember to close QT while removing/replacing components so the list will be re-initialized before making a playback test.) If all else fails, try posting a sample file so we can see if the problem can be duplicated on other systems/configurations.

  • I can't view avi files - please help!

I recently bought a Samsung Smartcam, which in the booklet says it saves in JMPEG format ("video compression format H.264, MJPEG"), however when I open the files they have been saved as AVI, which my Mac won't open.
I have a MacBook Pro running the latest version of Yosemite.
Will I have to download a converter and convert all the videos I want to view, or is there another way? I looked at the settings on the camera and it doesn't give me an option to change the format.
    Cheers,
    Wendi

I recently bought a Samsung Smartcam, which in the booklet says it saves in JMPEG format ("video compression format H.264, MJPEG"), however when I open the files they have been saved as AVI, which my Mac won't open.
H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) and MJPEG are two different methods for compressing video data. Both are playback compatible with QT. AVI is a file container. It is also compatible with QT under Yosemite. However, QT is not programmed to play AVI files that do not contain MJPEG compressed video with or without some form of PCM encoded audio. So the primary question here is "What kind of data is in the AVI container?"
Will I have to download a converter and convert all the videos I want to view, or is there another way? I looked at the settings on the camera and it doesn't give me an option to change the format.
Unless the device records both H.264 and MJPEG simultaneously and stores both to AVI files (which alone would prevent playback), there must be a setting, either built into the device or controlled by separate software, that allows you to switch between H.264 (in a different file container) and MJPEG in the AVI file container. I would recommend trying to open the file in a third-party player like VLC to see if the file will play and what kind of data formats the file actually contains. As to the conversion of data—that would normally be a last resort to be used only if necessary.

  • Quicktime 10.1 not playing .avi files

My quicktime player isn't playing .avi files properly. I have perian installed and have been playing .avi files on my MacBook Pro fine now for over 2 years. However, I resently installed Lion and it doesn't seem to be working now. I've looked around and it seems there are some bugs with Perian and Lion, however I haven't seen mine. Quicktimes loads, loads the video, I can click anywhere on the timeline and see the video, however when I hit play, it immediately pauses itself and won't play. Sometimes it will play very brieftly, about 1/10 of a second, and then flicker back to paused. Is there any other integrated solution to Perian? Was hoping to not have to get VLC player.

I had this same problem and someone on here helped me solve it.
As stated, I did not have any problem and could not duplicate the original poster's problem.
See if you have DIVX For Mac installed.
Negative. I do not have any DivX components installed and am using Perian for playback. AVI (DivX5/MP3) files were created using Visual Hub under Snow Leopard. And, if I cannot get Visual Hub to work under Lion (PPC version is not Lion compatible), then I will drop AVI altogether since I only use it to send my sister clips.

  • Converting avi files for FCE

    Hi,
I have a ton of avi files that I need to convert for editing in FCE.
My goal: to get my avi clips into FCE so they don't have to be rendered in the timeline and everytime an edit is made. I've read several posts which suggests mpeg streamclip. My avi format is: Apple OpenDML JPEG, 640 x 480, Millions DVI ADPCM, Mono, 22.050 kHz FPS: 29.97, size: 640 x 480 pixels (this is the format listed when I open the clip in quicktime). My my final output of this FCE project is to view on HDTV (16:9) via dvd, so the best quality is what I would like.
    My questions:
Is streamclip what I should be using?
And what settings should I use in streamclip to convert the avi files? (my guess would be: quicktime movie for the format) I've been trying different options under quicktime movie and the conversion leads to a jerky choppy video.
    thank you!

I'm thinking the problem is you are missing an audio codec required for this Casio Exilim video. Your camera specs say that it records MJPEG in an AVI container with a spec for WAV audio. You also indicated that the VLC media player said it was MS audio.

Yes, I have perian installed. I even tried reinstalling both to be sure.

  • Write/read image to avi file, VI works incorrectly from the second run

Hi everybody, in my labview I write image from IMAQ USB to avi file and read image from avi file, the VI runs correctly at the first run then after that it goes wrong, I can write/read only one frame and it terminates automatically. Does anybody know why and how to solve this?
    Thanks a lot,
    Hannah

Without seeing your code I can't comment specifically, but if it runs correctly the first time and then stops be looking for something that is not getting reinitialized correctly. Also what exactly do you have to do to get it to work again? Close and reopen the VI? Restart LV? Restart the computer?

  • Bridge CS4 freezes when I open a folder with avi files

Whenever I navigate to a folder with avi files, Bridge CS4 freezes. I have tried resetting my preferences, changing the file associations, but it still hangs. Both Windows and Bridge are set up to associate avi files with VLC Media Player. The files open and play just fine in VLC. I am running CS4 on a Win XP Pro machine. It used to not be a problem and I could play avi files in Bridge. I'm not sure when the problem started since I don't shoot a lot of video. Any ideas?

Thx for that im gonna try it....but is there a way to do it without using toolbar or cmd-c...? i mean using only the mouse?why does it have to highlight the file even though i click a bit next to it....?using icon view i can right click next to the folder and i wont have a problem but with list view that i prefer using it will highlight the whole row.....and i dont find free space to right click cause i got many files
