Blocky video after encoding AVI

Hi there, I encoded an AVI of pretty good almost DVD quality, after encoding the AVI to a DVD using IDVD 6, the video is blocky around the edges....
Why is this? IDVD does not have any advanced features allowing you to play with the encoder settings so i don't what to do...
If I were to convert the AVI to MPEG2 using another application and then re-burn my DVD, would IDVD automatically skip the encoding process as I would be using a DVD MPEG2 format???
Anyone know of any other decent apps for making DVD's?
Thanks for the help, I truly appreciate it.

GIGO does not apply in this case
I bet it does...
the AVI was only 1hr 45min so it's not too long
...and what was the file size in MB? Note that if it were in DV video format, the file size would have been about 21 GB - I'll bet your AVI file was very highly compressed and no where near this file size.
What was the on-screen image size? Many AVI files I've seen use the old MPG-1 size of 320x240 pixels - just 1/4 the size of the image iDVD expects to see.
Maybe DVD studio pro is the answer i'm looking for!!
iDVD uses the same Compressor application that DVD SP does.

  • Audio is 1 frame longer than video after encode

My .ac3 files are coming up 1 frame longer than they should be on SOME encodes. Unfortunately, I can't see any noticeable pattern to which files it happens to. It occurs on anything from audio-only files created in Soundtrack to an FCP video/audio export. It's happened on both a DV sequence as well as a DVCPRO HD sequence. It's a bit unnerving to see the audio longer than the video, even if it is one frame because the end product is slightly (1 frame, I'd reckon) out of sync. I've tried setting a specific out point in my sequence and got the same effect.
Does anyone have any ideas? Anyone else having their audio come up 1 frame too long on a Dolby encode?
    Thanks,
    Cameron

Anyone else having their audio come up 1 frame too long on a Dolby encode?
    Yes.
The rest is longwinded with no answer to the problem.
    First the system config.
    Dual 1.8 GHz PCI-X G5
    4 GB Ram
Media drive: 800 GB Raid FW 800
(4 discs, 2 on internal bus, 2 on LaCie FW 800 card)
    162 MB/s Read, 91 MB/s Write.
    FCP 5.1.2
    Compressor 2.3
    DVD SP 4.1.1
    I created a 16 minute NTSC DVC PRO50 sequence, audio at 48KHz 16 bit.
Not having a person recorded talking for that length of time I created a series of one frame "pops" of color bars and tone, followed by 10 seconds of video and audio slug.
This sequence was copied and pasted to fill the timeline with a single frame of the "pop" at the very end.
    Everything perfectly in sync.
I nested the sequence and rendered.
No matter how the 16 minute timeline was exported and compressed to MPEG-2, 7 Mb/s and Dolby 2.0 192 Kb/s.
(direct export to Compressor, export of audio and video separately or sequence export, then to Compressor)
there was always an audio sync error once imported to the DVD SP timeline.
Not an entire frame out, but on zooming to max in the timeline in SP, about 7/8 of a frame extra.
If I exported just the last 1:21 min of the NTSC DVC PRO50 timeline, and compressed with the same settings, the extra audio length was about 3/4 of a frame over.
Next I exported the NTSC DVC PRO50 timeline as a DVCPRO HD100 1080 60i QT sequence.
Cut the last 1:21 min and imported to Compressor.
    Compressed as 19 MB/s MPEG-2 and Dolby 2.0 192 Kb/s.
Created a new DVD SP HD project and brought the files into the timeline.
Zoomed in at the end, and the error in sync was minimal, not perfect, but difficult to make out even at full zoom.
Anyone have any suggestions to get things, at least Standard Definition, perfectly in sync?

  • MPEG-2 file with AC3 5.1 audio: no audio (neither in current video playback, nor after encode), but plays okay in QuickTime X

    Mavericks 10.9.3
Latest Mac Mini, 8GB RAM, two 256GB SSD
    Compressor 4.1.1
I have an MPEG-2 file with AC3 5.1 audio which plays in QuickTime X as expected.
I have a second MacBook Pro with Compressor 4.1.1, where the audio is fine - both as current video playback of the source, and post-encode using Apple Devices HD (best quality) setting.
However in the Mac Mini Compressor there is no audio (neither in current video playback of the source, nor after encode using Apple Devices HD (best quality) setting).
    Troubleshooting
    - main difference between machines is the Mac Mini has Elgato software (EyeTV and Game Capture HD)
    - I've checked the QuickTime components are same on both machines, except for EyeTV audio component on Mac Mini
    - there are no plug-in audio components
    - I've repaired permissions using Disk Utility
    - I moved Compressor to trash, deleted compressor plist files, and reinstalled

  • IDVD halts after encoding videos but before audio

I have made many iDVD's of our travel pictures, including both pictures and videos. However, my current iMovie won't complet e the process and always stops after encoding the videos but does not encode the audios. At that point, the gumball just sets there and spins for many hours (overnight, etc.) and when using the "force quit" the drop down says iDVD not responding" in red. I have tried about 5 times with no result. Any suggestions as to what I should do will be appreciated. Thank you. R. L. Anderson, M.D.

Hang in there. This is "Normal." In fact, contrary to what the computer is telling you, the computer is processing the audio.
Adding audio to your iMovie causes this problem. There are two work arounds.
    1. Export your iMovie back to your camcorder, then input the movie back into a new iMovie, add your chapters and export to iDVD. The audio encoding may hang up but it will only be for a few minutes.
    2. Export iMovie as a Quicktime movie, then reimport the Quicktime movie to iMovie, add chapters, export to iDVD.
If you search this the iDVD forum for "audio encoding" you'll see loads of messages on this topic.

  • Novice to Adobe video issue after encoding.

    Hi
Im very new to Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Media Encoder so I realise it might be something I havent or have done to give me my problem.
Im attempting to create a Minecraft video for YouTube, Using Fraps as the recording program and Adobe Premiere Pro as the video editor.
My Adobe is the CS4 version
I have looked at tutorials and followed several different people that are using the same programs as I am but every video I make goes into Adobe Premiere pro good quality but after the Adobe Media Encoding is complete I get like a Motion Blur that was not seen any where during editing.
I was wondering if this was something I had done or not done, ive tryed many different settings both presets and custom found on the tutorials but what ever I do the final video has this Motion Blurr.  Also when the final video has encoded it has like a grey film over the video rather than crisp, which I think is causing the issue.
I have included some settings that I am currently using but as I said it happens on all settings.
The specs that I am using are
    Fraps:
    Recording at 30fps
    Screen Size 1920x1080
    And for Adobe Premiere Pro
New project settings: are all default except the Capture format which I changed to HDV (Ihave also tryed DV with the same problem)
    New sequence settings: HDV 1080p30
    Adobe Premiere Pro Export Settings
    Format is H.264
Preset is custom following the HDTV 1080p 29.97 High quality setting, these settigns are as follows:
    Video Settings:
    TV Standard: NTSC
    Frame: 1920x1080
    FPS: 30
    Pixel Aspect Ratio Widescreen: 16:9
    Profile: Main
    Level: 4.2
    Bitrate Settings are
    Bitrate Encoding: VBR, 1 Pass
    Bitrate Mbps is 8-8
Ive tried to include as much detail as possible.
Any Help would be appriciated thank you.

I'm not entirely sure how much difference this will make, but have you tried VBR 2 pass encoding? It'll take longer to encode but you should get a better result.

  • CS4 unable to encode videos after upgrading from CS3

CS4 was unable to export and encode a video after upgrading from CS3.  The error message indicated the the file could not be found.  To fix this problem do the following.  Create a short cut to adobe premiere pro (executable program) named "Premiere"     Then place the short cut in the folder C:Program Files/Common Files/Adobe/dynamiclink    After doing this my version worked fine.

The problem mainly occures when one then removes the CS3 version of Adobe Premiere.   I have found a tech note on this problem at:

  • Blocky video

I have been using Premiere Elements 4 for a while now, but as I start to try and do more (i.e. - capturing old VHS tapes for archiving on DVD) I keep running into the same problem.
Some, NOT ALL, clips that I put on the timeline turn "blocky."  Frequently, they start out on the timeline just fine, but after some edits, the whole clip goes blocky on me.  Looking at a still frame, it looks fine, but when played, the blocks show up.
I am capturing the video using a Hauppage PVR on a different computer than the one I edit on.  It seems to happen no matter the resolution I record the tapes at.
What could be causing this, and how can I avoid or correct it?
I edit on Dell XPS420, running Vista.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

That device is probably not the best for capturing VHS video because it does not capture your video as DV-AVI files.
The FAQs at the right of this forum explain more and make recommendations.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/431853?tstart=0
When non-DV-AVI files are loaded into Premiere Elements, the program must assimilate them on the fly -- indicated by a red line along the top of your timeline. The longer your project and the more of these files you add, the more stress it puts on your system. And the more likely you'll see lower quality previews of your video.
You can alleviate some of this by hard rendering the files as you work. Press the Enter key and the red lines will turn green.
But you'll be much more ahead of the game -- and much less likely to run into unpredictable problems later in the process -- if you use the right file format as your source as in the first place. The ADS Pyro AV Link, as recommended in our FAQs, produces files that require no rendering at all and flow very efficiently through the program.

  • Problems after encoding - renders mpegindex files?

When you encode avi to mpeg-2, it works fine, but then, after transcoding it is doing importing and it takes forever, so I checked cache folder and encore is generating mpegindex files and I don't know what does it mean. I just tried 30s video, which should have only 900 frames, but it last forever like few hours, so then I have to close program, because encore is not responding. DO you know what does it mean? (tryout version)

With regard to the Index files, both Encore and Premiere generate MACC files when you import MPEG files (I dont know if happens upon import, preview or transcode for Encore, yet). Premiere has a pref where you can set their location. Encore puts them in the project folder.
Then the location of the files is stored in the Media Cache Database: Application Data\Adobe\Common\Media Cache Files. Both Encore and Premiere use this, so if you imported into Premiere, Encore wont have generate the Media Cache files.
    What Media Cache files do:
Index files: store info that allows for quick scrubbing/preview without having to reread the MPEG file.
Peak files (pek): create the bitmap that shows the audio wave form.
In the Encore application prefs under Audio/Video out is the erroneously place Media Cache Database preference:
"Clean" will get rid of orphans in the database.
"Delete" will delete the actual Media Cache files.
    Hope this helps your problem.

  • Adobe Media Encoder CS4 White Overlay after encoding

For some reason, when converting a .mov to .mp4 in AME, after encoding, the .mp4 video appears to have a white transparent (~50%) overlay after about 3 seconds that persists until the video ends. The beginning looks fine, but the overlay appears and the video is ruined. The white is NOT in the original.
    Original video specs:
11 second .mov, 1196px X 528px (non standard dimension, I know, video created from microscope, but plays perfectly on several systems, Mac/PC)
    No Audio
    Encoding to:
    .mp4
    H.264
    600px X 265px (same aspect ratio)
    24 fps
    Field order: None (Progressive)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square Pixels
    No audio, No filters
Is there something I am missing? Been at this for 2 days, its driving me mad!

What player(s) show the white overlay, and on what operating system & version? Can you give us access to sample clips (original and AME encodes) or at least post screenshots?

  • HT4072 can't play video files (mp4, avi, mkv) with 5.1 audio tracks

I have two Macs, one with a mini-optical out and no audio through its mini-displayport, and the other that supports digital audio out through its mini-displayport. On either of my Macs, how can I play video files (mp4, avi, mkv) in 5.1 using Quicktime or iTunes or VLC? I've heard I need Perian. Is this true? If so, how do I configure it on either machine?
Note that when I connect the computer that supports audio through the mini-displayport to my receiver, my home theater receiver detects a PCM audio connection, but the audio I get out of my speakers is still stereo.
Both computers are running Snow Leopard. I haven't had the need to upgrade to Lion yet, but if the answer is that I need Lion do do this, I'd spend the $29.
    Thanks for the help!

This just happened for the first time with an .mkv file I was trying to play. It started fine but then after selecting a menu option in smplayer the video disappeared. It didn't go black, the player just stopped presenting the video. In other words the player switched to audio playback mode only, the window was unable to go into fullscreen or be resized. Smplayer still works with other HD files. Deleting the config directory fixes the problem until I select a menu option, such as, setting the audio to 5.1, then the video portion disappears again.
Does anyone know what is going on here or have any ideas on how to fix this issue?
    Thanks for any help provided.
that's because now mplayer they switch to libavformat demuxer for mkv and ogg and i think is a bug in smplayer because is making some configuration for files in file_settings in which is sets demuxer & co. this switch is confusing smplayer and it should be reported upstream
p.s if you actually select demuxer from smplayer to mkv it would work perfectly

  • Audio Drops After Encoding

    Hi all,
I created a video in Premiere and sent it to AME to encode. It was a basic edit and everything worked on the timeline before I sent it to encode. After encoding to a 720p 59.94fps H.264 Quicktime, the last 2 minutes of audio on the video disappear. I've checked the audio track mixer window and that track is panned center.. The audio plays fine in Premiere.. I just don't know why it disappeared after being encoded. Can anyone help me to figure out why this happened? It caused some grief for me at work. Thanks!
    -Cody

First of all, what version of Premiere Pro and AME are you using on what platform (Win or Mac)?
Can you try exporting your sequence directly from Premiere Pro without sending to AME?  Does it work?  If it does not work, you may want to try clearing media cache.  When none of Adobe applications are running, could you try deleting the media cache folders called "Media Cache" and "Media Cache Files" at
    Mac: /Users/<your user name>/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common
    Win: <OS drive>:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Common
Then, open the project in Premiere Pro.  Please wait all import process to be done.  See the Premiere Pro main window's bottom right (see the screenshot below).  Please wait till all progress to be done.  Can you properly export now?

  • Blocky video on dvd playback.

Hi, sorry if this has been dealt with before but I'm not too wise just yet with final cut studio and have been having some trouble with blocky video on dvd.
I shot some video using hd pal and captured that in fcp. I used the corresponding timeline. I was then advised to export the project using self-contained-file with encoder ProRes 422, and to then put this through compressor using dvd90minute and changing dialogue normalisation to -31, compression preset to 'none' and the average bit rate from 6.8 to 8.0. I then imported this into dvd studio and burnt the dvd. When this plays back some of the shots, not all of them, randomly appear blocky, some more than others. I am obviously doing something wrong when exporting and/or compressing, but I think the problem lays in the compression.
The blockiness appears on playback on both the mac and dvd players. It occurs at moments of static camera. One particular part, it is just someone sitting down talking and the video doesn't look right as it plays. It then becomes blocky and as it plays the entire picture sort of jumps to and fro blocky to normal in quick succession. This doesn't occur throughout, only in some parts, and the parts that it does not happen aren't any different in content than the ones that do jump.
Since the quicktime file I exported appears to look ok in quicktime, perhaps the problem lay in either the compression or the burning?
If someone could give some advice, it would be really great!
    Thanks.

Well, first of all, dialogue normilization and compression preset are audio settings and have no bearing on how your video turns out. But why are you mucking with the preset to begin with? Especially if you're new to FCS? It's possible that cranking up the average bit rate of the MPEG is causing trouble for your DVD player.
My advice is to just trust the preset and only make changes IF you are seeing poor results. Remember, you are going from HD to SD by making a DVD so there is going to be unavoidable quality loss. Don't expect as clean and clear of an image from the DVD as you have from your exported QT. The basic DVD presets work wonderfully for a variety of situations so start there before making changes.

  • Recorded Videos after Sync: The requested URL was not found on this server.

A few days ago, i recorded a couple of videos. They were saved properly and i could watch them after it in the Camera Roll of my iPhone. Because my memory was almost full, i connected my iPhone to my MacBook and synchronized about 900 old pictures with iPhoto and selected to delete the pictures after the sync. I did not select the recently recorded videos.
After the sync, i opened the Camera Roll on my iPhone and tried to watch the videos again. But now, they all have a grey icon and it says the duration is 0:00 minutes. When i click on a video, it shows me the following error message:

When i connect my iPhone to iTunes, it says that there is about 350 MB of "Documents and Data" on my phone that I have no idea where it is coming from. Do you think it is possible that the videos are still saved on my phone but my phone doesn't recognize it as videos and can't assign it to the icons in the Camera Roll? Do you have any tips how I can access the videos in case they are still saved somewhere on my iPhone?

I have the same problem too!! I was deleting some photos and videos in my phone when the next picture I swiped to was a blank picture with JPG in the middle~ after I closed camera roll and reopened it my photos and videos after that picture are all gone~ and I'm left with 3 videos I took about 30 mins before with 0:00 and when I tried to play them the message popped up saying "requested URL cannot be found on this server" T^T does anyone have a solution to this problem?

    Hi j2399123,
It sounds like your screen recording is doing what it was designed to do, capture what is happening on your screen, with optional voice over with the microphone.
Screen recording is for recording what you see on the screen, it is not a "video capture" option, like for capturing a movie with sound that is playing on your screen.
