Blocky video importing from a Sony HDR-HC3

I have been using my Son HDR-HC3 with my PC, Windows XP, and Sony Vegas Movie Studio for over a year without any problems. Recently I upgraded my mac to a new 20" iMac.
Upon importing either video off tape or live video from my camcorder I get periodic errors in the video, macroblocking. This only happens with HDV, not DV.
This happens in iMovie 7.1 but Apple also had be install iMovie 6 HD - same issues in both.
Since I know the camcorder and 1394 cable are good and iMovie can import DV without any issues I strongly suspect that iMovie (or the QuickTime CODECs that it is using) are not too happy with the format of the compressed HDV coming from the HDR-HC3.
A call to Apple has them telling me to take my camcorder to an Apple Store (an hour drive for me) to see if the same issue exists on one of their macs. If so, it's a software issue and they'll make a note and, at some point, maybe fix it. If I don't see the problem on one of the store macs then it's a hardware problem with my mac.
Either way, I'm not a happy camper since HDV editing is the primary reason for upgrading from my stable, yet slow G4 to this new iMac.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Have you found a software/configuration work-around?

  • Importing from a Sony HDR-XR500V

    Hi guys, noob here.
I've been digging all over the internet and I can't seem to find an answer to this.
I recently purchased a Sony HDR-XR500V Handycam. The camera is a 1080p hd camera (sorry I don't actually know much about specs) but I know a friend forewarned me about buying a camera with a hard drive because of the difficulties I'd have uploading. Stupidly, I purchased this camera and I'm pulling my hair out trying to get my video created.
I run Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 and the software won't detect my camera even when the computer does. Sony has me uploading through a program called Picture Motion Browser instead, which came with the camcorder. It then saves it in a weird file format (mt2?). The software gives me the options to convert it to wmv or mpeg2, but when I convert it to wmv the picture quality becomes cell-phone caliber and when I convert it to mpeg2 and import it adobe can't load the sound from the file.
If I can find a way to
    -Import it into CS3 directly
    or
-Convert it to mpeg2 and still maintain the sound
    Then problem solved
I desperately need this for a project due this week and I hope you guys don't mind my noobness
    Thanks! =D

Two major problems with this camera:
    1. AVCHD. It may require a much beefier computer than you currently have, something the salespeople never tell you when you buy the camera. I7 overclocked may be around minimum.
    2. AC3 5.1 sound. You may need to demux your clips and convert the audio to 48 KHz 16 bit stereo PCM/WAV.
Do not convert to WMV. Leave it in the format it is imported. All conversions will severely reduce quality.
If you can still exchange the camera for another, more edit-friendly model, jump at it.

  • No sound when importing from a Sony HDR-HC7

    Hello all together,
I bought a new Sony HDR-HC7, the camera is fantastic. There is only one thing perplexing me: When importing HD-Clips into iMovie HD 6.0.3 I cannot hear the sound that was recorded by the camera. When I play the clips, I can hear sound. What could this be?
With my old Sony TVR 33 (no HDV) I don't have this problem.
    Did I forget any settings?
    Thanks for advices,
    Stefan

    Hi Stfan:
I guess I would try the easy things first.
Make certain that " Video Play Through Camera " is
not enabled in imovie Preferences. That is
because it sends all audio through the FireWire port
and mutes it on the computer.
ake certain your video is 16-bit audio (not 12-bit).
Once you have imported (and saved) the video into
imovie, close imovie. Then unplug all firewire
    devices (camera included).
Relaunch imovie. Is the audio there now?
    Sue
    Hi Sue,
thank you for your advice. As I use the German version I am not quite sure, if "Video Play Through Camera" is in the third tab of the iMovie-Prefs the fourth checkbox overarm? This one's unenabled. Audio is 16-bit.
Audio was alwas there in the play-mode but not in the import-mode.

  • I Movie not importing from my Sony HDR HCI camera...why?

My HD camera is not importing into I movie. When I import, it records just fine and it shows a clip being recorded. When stop the import after 5 or 7 minutes, I MOVIE then shows a total clip of a few seconds up to a few minutes, but never the whole clip.
    What is wrong?

    Hi Bob
HD Cameras is not my thing But the import problems I got some ideas about:
    - most common problem is wrong mix of Mac OS + iMovie version + QuickTime version.
    I would use Mac OS X.4.8 + iMovie 6.0.3 + QuickTime 7.1.3
The amount of free space on Your internal hard disk (more than 20Gb +
space for the movie material) - and make Import to this.
Other programs working in the background can interfrere - then mainly FileVault
    Turn this OFF!
    Yours Bengt W

  • Sony HDR-HC3 no longer works in iMovie 08 under Leopard

    Hello all,
Prior to my upgrade from 10.4 to 10.5, I had been using iMovie to import from my Sony HDR-HC3 mini DV camera without any difficulty - building a library of video from my rehearsals so that I can prepare doctoral audition DVDs.
Now, since upgrading to Leopard, it no longer works. Has something changed? Using the same hardware, connections, and settings, and choosing either 'large' or 'full' to import from 1080i on the camera, and trying automatic or manual, and connected via iLink as usual, it starts the camera properly, but when you play the tape no video shows on the Mac - when using Automatic it will shortly stop, rewind as if it found the end of the tape, and gives an error beep but no messages.
Any advice? Any known issues that I haven't found?
    Cheers,
    Aaron

As indicated, I've tried both manual and auto, and I had always used both before - now neither work.
Are you controlling the camcorder manually also and do you specify a specific output (and if you do, did you follow instructions and pull the FW cable to force the change to take affect)?

  • Not able to capture HD content from Sony HDR-HC3

I recently purchased Final Cut Express 4, after successfully using iMovie HD for the past year. I successfully captured some DV content (non-HD) from my Sony HDR-HC3 for a project. However, when trying to capture HD footage for a 2nd project, I'm not getting anything. Here's the info:
    * I made the change in "Easy Setup..." to set the format to HD using Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60.
    * The footage was shot at 1080i on my HDR-HC3.
    * The camera is plugged in via FireWire.
    * When I choose "Capture", the the HDV Capture dialog comes up asking me for a file name. Once I give it a file name and click the Capture button, the tape starts playing and I get a black window with "Final Cut Express" in the middle (and the Apple logo). At the bottom, it says "CUEING TAPE (press 'esc' to stop)". When I press 'esc', the tape stops and the black capture window goes away.
    * I never see a preview in the capture window, but I see the footage fine in my camera's LCD screen.
    * A folder is created in the Capture Scratch folder, with the name I gave in the HDV Capture dialog, but nothing is ever written to this folder. It's empty.
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong...I just don't seem to be capturing any video...FCE is seeing my camera and is taking control (starting and stopping) but nothing is actually being captured.

Ok, I figured it out on my own. Operator error.
When I had captured non HD content using my camera, I had to set the iLink (FireWire) conversion to "On - HDV-->DV" in the camera in order for it to work. I forgot to set it back to "Off", so the camera was downconverting to DV when output through FireWire. Once I turned off the conversion, I was able to capture in HD.

  • My computer is no longer allowing me to import video from my Sony HDR camera.

My computer is no longer allowing me to import video from my Sony HDR camera.  I don't know if it is the operating system or the version of imovie or what.  I also have imovie 06 and I was always able to import into it and can no longer do that either.

This is probably due to a similar issue to a browser redirect.

  • Importing HD from a Sony HDR-CX7

Apologies for this crazy question, but the last time I was using iMovie was over a year ago (version 08). There were two problems with importing HD footage from my Sony HDR-CX7: (1) iMovie didn't correctly compress it, and the file size(s) ended up being huge; (2) iMovie didn't handle the 5-channel audio correctly and I ended up with only 1 channel (iMovie 08 wouldn't mix down 5-channel to stereo correctly (on the fly)).
The way I dealt with the first problem was to spend thousands of dollars on external drives for storage of the files.
The way I dealt with the second problem was this: for every single clip I downloaded from my camera, I had to: export it to Quicktime, delete the clip in iMovie, fix the sound in Quicktime, re-import it back into iMovie.
Does anyone know if this stuff has been fixed?
    Thanks for any info!

I assume you are using AVCHD video... I have never used this format before, but I bet you could mount the disk on your computer and open the video files in something like MPEG Streamclip (free). You can then export it from that program how you wish. (Although exporting to Apple Intermediate Codec would probably be the fastest option for HD.)

You can mount the disk on your computer, then open Disk Utility. If you select the disk partition (partitions are indented), the disk format is on the bottom of the window along with other information.

  • I'm trying to upload videos from my Sony HDR-CX550 camera and the files that contain the video (.cpi or .mts) are all grayed out on iMovie. I've been able to upload footage before onto Apple computers but now it doesn't seem to be working. Suggestions?

I've tried many different options including calling Apple Customer Support and talking to them for over an hour troubleshooting the issue. They couldn't do anything. I also called Sony who failed as well. Somebody please help me out. Thanks!

    Hello whatif95,
Sorry to hear that you are having trouble importing video from your Sony HDR-CX550.  I found an article that provides some information specific to your camera and iMovie '09:
iMovie: Importing both HD and SD content with Sony HDR series cameras
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1793
For versions previous to iMovie ’11 v9.0.1, including iMovie ’08, ’09, and ’11 (v9.0 only):
To import the AVCHD content from the camera when MPEG-2 content has also been recorded, you must first import and erase the MPEG-2 content from the camera. You should then be able to import the AVCHD content.
    I hope this helps!
    Best,
    Sheila M.

Looking up your camera online, I found it is capable of 1920 x 1080 Full HD 60p Recording. It's the 60p (60 frames per second Progressive) that's the problem I think. iMovie '11 will do 60i (Interlaced). You might need to convert it from the format the camera currently uses into another format to get it into iMovie. Read more about it on this link here: How to import 60p footage From that message thread comes the recommendation to use ClipWrap to convert the camera's video clips now that they are in 60p:

Use ClipWrap to rewrap to QuickTime. Import the files. Edit in either 59.94 or 29.97. The latter if you want to use the high frame rate for slomo

Photo Stream does not do videos. For videos, you must import to your computer. You can use iPhoto to import them.
