Blocky video on burnt dvd.

Hi, sorry if this has been dealt with before but I'm not too wise just yet with final cut studio and have been having some trouble with blocky video on dvd.
I shot some video using hd pal and captured that in fcp. I used the corresponding timeline. I was then advised to export the project using self-contained-file with encoder ProRes 422, and to then put this through compressor using dvd90minute and changing dialogue normalisation to -31, compression preset to 'none' and the average bit rate from 6.8 to 8.0. I then imported this into dvd studio and burnt the dvd. When this plays back some of the shots, not all of them, randomly appear blocky, some more than others. I am obviously doing something wrong when exporting and/or compressing.
If someone could give some advice, it would be really great!
Thanks.

Hi, this does occur on playback on all dvd players.
It occurs at moments of static camera. One particular part, it is just someone sitting down talking and the video doesn't look right as it plays. It then becomes blocky and as it plays the entire picture sort of jumps to and fro blocky to normal in quick succession. This doesn't occur throughout, only in some parts, and the parts that it does not happen aren't any different in content than the ones that do jump.
If you need any more information in what I've done let me know. Hope you can help. Thanks.

I then imported this into dvd studio and burnt the dvd. When this plays back some of the shots, not all of them, randomly appear blocky, some more than others. I am obviously doing something wrong when exporting and/or compressing, but I think the problem lays in the compression.
The blockiness appears on playback on both the mac and dvd players. It occurs at moments of static camera. Since the quicktime file I exported appears to look ok in quicktime, perhaps the problem lay in either the compression or the burning?

    Thanks.

Well, first of all, dialogue normilization and compression preset are audio settings and have no bearing on how your video turns out. But why are you mucking with the preset to begin with? Especially if you're new to FCS? It's possible that cranking up the average bit rate of the MPEG is causing trouble for your DVD player.
My advice is to just trust the preset and only make changes IF you are seeing poor results. Remember, you are going from HD to SD by making a DVD so there is going to be unavoidable quality loss. Don't expect as clean and clear of an image from the DVD as you have from your exported QT. The basic DVD presets work wonderfully for a variety of situations so start there before making changes.

  • After using video capture device to copy VHS to DVD, burnt DVD will play on computer but not

After using video capture device to copy VHS to DVD, burnt DVD will play on computer but not on DVD player. Tech support for the VCD said my HP DVD burning software has to burn "DVD Video and not DVD data" and to check with HP. How can i check myself.

    Grahamster, welcome to the forum.
I recommend trying CDBurnerXP for burning video CD's.  I have been using it for years without a glitch.  I use it mainly for burning ISO's, but have used it for all types.  Please let us know if it works or not.

  • Dvd player does not read burnt dvds

i burnt 2 dvds on my macbook pro (leopard). they both play fine on my macbook pro and my toshiba dvd player.
they will not play on my macbook and powermac g4 (tiger).
is this a problem with the dvd player in tiger? if so, any way to update it or download a newer version?

oh sorry i forgot to add that i managed to play some of the contents directly from my storage disk:
    1. open dvd player
    2. select play media
    3. instead of clicking on the FOLDER, like i wld do if i access the video from my macbook pro (leopard), i have to open the folder and click on VIDEO TS inside the folder
it will play this way. but i wonder if some features are lost? and why can't i play directly fr the burnt dvd like i can do on my macbook pro and toshiba dvd player?
sorry this is longwinded... i am rather frustrated here... thx for the help!

  • MacBook will not play burnt DVDs?

Hi, not sure if anyone posted this topic already so sorry in advance, but i wanted to know why won't my macbook play burnt DVDs. The DVDs worked fine on my dvd player, my other PC etc. When i load the burnt DVD into my macbook it wouldnt recognize the disk and when i open the dvd platey and hit play it would say something like please enter a readable disk. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.
Black MacBook 2.0GHZ 1GB RAM 80GB HD; 5TH GEN Black iPod Video   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I have the same problem with my MacBook 2.0 GHz.
The DVDs in question are DVD-RWs burnt with Pioneer DVR-520H, they work fine on my iMac G4 (DVD-Player & VLC) but when I insert the DVD in my MacBook the DVD-Player doesn't recognize the "media type" and VLC player gives me an error log like this :
vcd: search for kIOCDMediaClass came up empty
vcd: failed to get the TOC
    vcd: no movie tracks found
access_file: file /dev/rdisk1 is empty, aborting
cdda: search for kIOCDMediaClass came up empty
cdda: failed to get the TOC
    cdda: no audio tracks found
main: no suitable access module for `dvdnav:///dev/rdisk1'
macosx: Error: Unable to open 'dvdnav:///dev/rdisk1'
The interesting thing is that the DVD shows fine on my MacBook's desktop, I can open it and when I copy the VIDEO_TS -folder on my hard disk I can play it with no problems with either DVD-player or VLC.
So my MacBook can read the disc, it just can't play it - what could be causing this problem?
I have been suggested trying DVD-Rs instead of DVD-RWs, but I don't think this solves the problem, I wanna be able to play RWs too if they work fine on my iMac G4.
The DVDs have also been tested on PowerBook G4 (works fine) and Intel iMac (the same problem as with my MacBook = doesn't work). The DVDs aren't copied, they have material recorded from TV using the Pioneer DVR-520H (the same machine used for burning the DVDs) on them.
I'm able to play normal, rented or bought DVDs on my MacBook. Both machines are running the latest Tiger OS.
    Thank you in advance.

  • I have just had all my video converted to DVDs and now I would like to edit them...how do I import them into imovie?

Can somebody help me figure out how to import my home videos from a DVD into imovie?

    That means 'reverse engineering them'!
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • Is it possible to export a video clip from DVD player to iMovie '09?

If I load a homemade DVD onto my iMac using Disk Utility and then import either the entire disc or portions of the disc into iMovie, that works just fine. However I noticed that some clips are missing in iMovie, even though they are on the iMac in form of a .dmg file on the desktop. The same file that was used to import in to iMovie. If I look at this file using DVD player, everything is there, but some of these clips are missing in the event window. So I created a video clip in DVD player of those pieces missing in iMovie and now how can I get these into iMovie?

Hey, best way to import video from a DVD video disc for editing is to acctually have a simple video file. Use Handbrake or MPEG StreamClip to read the disc and create a video file off the video stream.
You could also set in and out points anc manually create several clips, which may help with playback and rendering for editing. I don't know how extensive you're going to get in your editing with iMovie...
    Hope that helped.

Go to the Map mode in your iDVD project and make sure the blue bin at the left is empty.  That's where you drag slideshows to if you want the DVD to open immediately to that slideshow and bypass the menu.
If there is an item in there drag it out.

Unfortunately, the recording & movie industry does not respect the rights of the people who make them money, and thus you can only use the paid-for content in ways they see fit. Even if I lived in a bunker where no one else could possibly see the movie I paid for, therefor I'm not 'sharing it illegally', I would still not be allowed in a blue moon to copy that movie to DVD for TV viewing. Someone will tell you to get an AppleTV. How about Apple give us one for free? Until this changes, people wanting to use their content in multiple locations will continue to download music & movies via torrents, legally or illegally.

  • Windows Media Player Doesn't play video files or DVDs (Windows 7 Home Premium)

    Hello,
I recently purchased a new hard drive and installed Windows 7 Home Premium on it. Since then, Windows Media Player has not been able to play any kind of video files or DVDs. I have tried using the Fixit tool and turning the WMP off and on with the Windows
Features menu, but it has not solved the problem. I have also made sure that my video and audio drivers are up to date.
The errors that come up say:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or a required codec might not be installed on your computer.
    and
Windows Media Player cannot play DVD video. You might need to adjust your Windows display settings. Open display settings in Control Panel, and then try lowering your screen resolution and color quality settings.
Any help with this would be great, because I like using WMP better than other media players.

    Hi,
Firstly, please try to use the Video example in C:\Users\Public\Videos\Sample Videos if it could play normally.
Secondly, try to reinstall Graphic Card driver for test.
If problem persists, try to remove WMP in Windows feature and add it again for test.

  • How do I import video off a DVD?

Is there a way to import video from a DVD directly into Final Cut Pro Express or do I need to download another program in order to do so. The DVDs are no copyrighted they are actually DVD I burned myself. If I do need to download another program which is the best/safest?

MPEG Streamclip (free) coupled with the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component ($19, downloadable from Apple, if you don't already have it).
If the DVD is standard def, use MPEG Streamclip to convert it to *QuickTime > Apple DV/DVCPRO NTSC.* If hidef/widescreen, convert it to QuickTime > Apple Intermediate Codec.

Videos I burnt to disc on my pc won't play on my macbook, when I insert the disc into the macbook it says it's blank but plays fine on the pc, does anyone know how to fix this?  The photo's I burnt on the exact same type of disc work fine in both pc and macbook but the videos will only play on the pc.

If you are trying to play these on quicktime then what video format are those videos?
Wmp's?  You need to install Flip4Mac.
    Most other formats?  Install Perian.
Or just use vlc instead.  It's a much better, more powerful, and more general video player.

How can I get my video from my DVD to iMovie?
I want to put my home video from this camera to iMovie, Can it be done?
I am going nuts, I paid alot of money for this camera and now I can't use it in my new Mac?
I am very new to Mac and this hurts!
PLEASE someone help me, I only see a USB, DO they sell some thing to help get the Video into iMOVIE?
    Thanks......

Search this forum for "compatible, DVD camcorder" and you will find many threads where people lament this truth:
iMovie is for miniDV formatted video connected via Firewire.
Mini DVD camcorders are designed for you to do very light editing on the camera before you finalize the DVD and don't support being imported into a computer. Anyway, many of the experts here know of converters and workarounds, if you want to spend some more money. You could start with these threads:
