Blog / Podcast: I'd like to enclose PDF files (instead of .png)

Hi there from Germany
and sorry for my English, folks. I would like to invite you to my iWeb-made (german) Blog here to make clear what my personal problem is - the enclosure of PDF-files. Please visit http://www.olemeiners.de/web/Kiosk/Kiosk.html or jump into the feed feed://www.olemeiners.de/web/Kiosk/rss.xml
I woud like to feed instead of the PNG-files iWeb made automatically (thats the prob!) my (dropped in the template and linked) PDF-files.
Background: I use the iWeb blog to show some of my published work (I'm a journalist) to acquire new jobs. But I can't find any functionallity to realize it - beside manipulating the rss.xml-file like a housewife.
When I take a look to the published site itself I find in the folder to the blog entry BOTH the png and the pdf. In my view there is no much work to add a functionality "feed original file instead of iWeb created preview picture". Would be great, not only for me, but for teachers too (see e.g.: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2208404&tstart=1).
Any idea? I'll see myself desperating in counting bytes for the correct document length of the to be enclosing pdf and crying at the next publishing via iWeb when I realize that all the manual work with the rss.xml file is overwritten.
Btw. I use 10.6.2 on more than one machines and publish to an own domain outside MobileMe

These fixes aren't working for me. I would like someone from Apple to give us step by step instructions for fixing this problem.

  • Download PDF files instead of viewing them within Safari?

I would like to automatically download PDF files instead of having to view them within Safari.
I have disabled Acrobat as the default reader and now Safari has switched to using Preview. However, I cannot find a way to also disable Preview to allow the PDF file to be downloaded instead of displayed within a Safari window.
Anyone have any ideas on how to do this seemingly simple task?

It's amazing to me that simply asking Safari to default to auto download a PDF is so arcane. It's incredible that Apple doesn't have a Safari preference for this very simple action!
The Terminal and Onyx methods recommended above are just ways of accessing a setting for Safari that Apple hasn't added to Safari Preferences. As I understand it, settings like this are built into Safari - they just aren't readily user-accessible. This is why programs like Onyx and Safari Enhancer exist, to open up "hidden" features and settings.
I imagine Apple's developers debate these things, trying to decide what would be simpler to leave out to avoid complexity and what confusion (but allow third-party or Terminal methods to access) and which would be better added to the regular Preferences settings.
Since this is a feature you'd like to see in Safari Preferences, I'd recommend submitting this as feedback to Apple.
In the meantime, though, I'd consider it a good thing that there are built-in ways to get the setting that you prefer. Personally, I don't find the default settings such a hindrance. They're intended to help the "average" user (the new Mac user, the non-technical user, etc.) who wants a PDF file to just open, without having to understand how to work with it. For the more savvy user, there are multiple methods of downloading and/or opening PDFs. I'm rather like you - I prefer to download PDFs (in which case I use the Control-click method if I notice the link is to a PDF) or sometimes I allow the PDF to open in Safari, then Control-click on the open PDF and choose the option to open in Acrobat Reader. I find the latter method even smoother than downloading and then opening, in fact. If I decide it's a file I want to keep, I save it to my hard drive; otherwise I just close it.

  • How to make Adobe as your default viewer for all your PDF file instead of the Preview given? Thanks

How to make Adobe as your default viewer for all your PDF file instead of the Preview given? Thanks

you need to "Get Info" on the file first. Select it, right click and select 'Get Info' in the menu.
In the window that pops up, near the bottom, the "Open With" drop down menu needs changed. If the drop down menu does not present the one you want, select "Other" and find it.

  • Suggestion - adding properties like labels to .pdf files

First of all, I'm not sure whether this is the right forum, but it is the most accurate I could find.
I was wondering whether .pdf files could have the enhancement of custom properties. In Vista, it is possible to add such properties (as well as author, subject, etc.) to files such as Microsoft Office ones, .xps and .jpg files in the Details Pane of Windows Explorer. With .pdf files, however, it is not possible. If this was implemented, I'd be able to organize .pdf files on my computer much better as well, which would be a huge improvement in my opinion.
Just a suggestion, please let me hear if it could be implemented as well as your own thoughts of this.

    Thanks for your reply.
I'm really sorry but it is perhaps that I only have Adobe Reader that I cannot see properties in Windows Explorer. When going to the properties window itself, the values on the PDF tab are read-only. I assume that's the reason for me not being able to read or write them in Windows Explorer.

  • I need to use Softsign, but my iPad keeps opening up my .pdf file instead of allowing me to "open with"... of allowing me to "open with"

I would like to use Softsign on my iPad, but mail keeps opening up my .pdf files so I cannot "open with" Softsign...please help, I gather part of the problem is that some files are single pages and that triggers their opening...

No need to post your billing info here. This is a public forum. In any case, have you tried to check with the developer for support to get it going first? What do you have to lose.
In any case, here is maybe where you want to correspond with Apple directly:

  • How can i make the report previewer show a PDF file instead of HTML?

    Hi there,
i made a report which can be called within a form by a button. This report is a PDF-report.
I also have an option in the application to start the report from the menu. Then i get the Launch Report Form by Headstart. Here i can fill in for Desformat (in the options) PDF and Output to PREVIEW. Still it generates me a HTML report in my browser. How can i make it work so that the PREVIEWER will show me a PDF-report instead of the HTML?
    Kind regards,
    Dave

You can not use PREVIEW as output type in webbased forms/reports. Try using as output type CACHE or FILE.

  • How do I save a document as a PDF file instead of an HTML?

I just installed Acrobat XI on my Windows 7 laptop. When I save a file as a PDF, it saves it as an HTML PDF, and will only open in the web browser. I would prefer to simply save it as a PDF file.

    It was a Word document.

  • Just downloaded adobe reader X. how do I change setting to open a file as a pdf file instead of word

Just downloaded adobe X reader   pdf files open as a word doc.  how do I change setting to only open doc as a pdf doc

Do you mean that MS Word is opening your pdf files? If so, you just need to change your file associations.
It's easy enough to do but how to do it depends on your operating system.

  • Whenever I try to download my .docx files from dropbox, they open as .pdf files instead. How do I fix this?

All of my .docx files on dropbox open as .pdf files when I click on them. I can get around it by closing the file and going to the download window that opened when I clicked on the file and clicking download again. It then opens up a window asking me how I want to view the file. However, this is quite inconvenient. Is there any way to make it so that it doesn't automatically open as a .pdf in the first place?

Change the Default program for ".docx" files to Microsoft.

  • Firefox tries to save PDF files instead of opening

When I click on PDF links Firefox tries to save them instead of opening them. This is so even though in "Options" under "Applications" I have all Adobe files set to "Use Adobe Reader".

You get the "Open/Save/Cancel" dialog, same as if you selected "Always Ask"?
When Firefox no longer responds to changes in the Application preferences, you sometimes need to reset those preferences, which involves deleting a settings file. This article has the steps for that under the heading "Reset download actions for all file types":

  • Printing separations to pdfs, how do I make separate pdf files instead of one multipage file

Every day at least a dozen times I print spot color separations for film through the print dialogue to pdf, and every single time I have to either print the spot colors one at  a time, or open the multipage pdf in Acrobat and use the clunky extract page function to get separate files.  I've been doing it a long time and it drives me bonkers, is there any way to just get it to print separate pdfs?
Then I have to rename each sep to have the color in the file name.  If there was a way to automate that I'd find myself with all kinds of spare time on my hands. I could go to the gym, lose some weight, possibly live longer.
    Thanks in advance

I send them to clents remotely.  I don't print the films myself, other people do it.  Most of the time those other people don't really know what they are doing, and are under killer deadlines, so I make the files as simple and comprehensible as possible.
Also the files need to get ganged up for filmsetters occasionally, so if we have a bunch of left chest prints (3 inches wide by less then an inch tall), for instance, we can put them all on one 11x17 piece of film by drag and dropping them into an ai file. To save film.

  • Capturing iPhoto Book Temporary PDF File

In earlier versions of iPhoto, it was possible to capture a copy of the PDF file that is generated and sent to the photo printing service by finding the temporary folder where iPhoto saves the file during the "assembling book..." phase. (For a detailed description, click here -- http://scottierocket.com/mac/capturing-iphoto-book-temporary-pdf-files/)
However, I can't seem to find the same temporary folder or files when running iPhoto '08. Does anyone know where these temporary files are stored during assembly and uploading?
    Thanks...Neil

Larry, thanks for the tip -- that looks like it does what I wanted to do!
In the meantime, I did find a slightly geekier way to do it. For those that care, I've posted the solution to my blog: http://scottierocket.com/mac/capturing-temporary-pdf-files-in-iphoto-08/
At least that way, I learned a bit more Mac OS X command-line geek-fu!

  • Convert pdf xstring to pdf file format

    Hi, All,
Could anybody know how to convert xstring(hexadecimal format like 255044462D) to pdf file format? I have to output pdf xstring which generated in SAP to XI, then output PDF file. Thanks a lot!
    Marea

From what I've understood from Michal's blog code, it will depend on the format that you choose for the file to have.
    In his case, he used
    type = if_ai_attachment=>C_MIMETYPE_JPEG
In your case, you could use the equivalent type for PDF files.
If you search for the IF_AI_ATTACHMENT interface in SE80 (ABAP Workbench), under Attributes folder you'll be able to see the constants which are defined in the interface. And there you have C_MIMETYPE_PDF (associated to the content-type 'application/pdf').
I don't know whether it is possible to do the type association using the RFC payload (probably not). The ABAP Proxy attachment seems to be the best approach.
    Regards,
    Henrique.
