Blogging Question

I've created a blog at http://www.make-money-writing.com
I'm wondering if I can just update the blog pages with my FTP client, or if I have to publish the whole site again, every time I post an update on my blog.
Also - I do not use .mac for hosting, and am wondering what limitations I have with my blog. I understand that I will not have RSS feed if I don't publish to .mac is there anything else that is specific to blogs that I will not have?
Do I need to ping the search engines each time I update, and if so, how would I do this? I'm REALLY new to blogging, and would appreciate any help.
Thank you.

I'm wondering if I can just update the blog pages with my FTP client, or if I have to publish the whole site again, every time I post an update on my blog.
You can't add entries to a blog without republishing, and publishing to a folder always generates the whole site. What part of that you upload via ftp is up to you.
I understand that I will not have RSS feed if I don't publish to .mac
That's not correct. What you don't have is comments and search.

im sure this has been asked before but! im new to the whole mac thing and i was plying a bit with iweb and wondered if you can post blog entries onto an existing blog (i.e. wordpress.com) if someone could tell me if you can or can't i would appreciate it! thanks!

isnt there a way to get you blog to show up on your iweb site? whether its a wordpress blog or blogger...
Yes, it's possible to embed your blog's main page by copying & pasting the following code into iWeb's +HTML Snippet+ window:
    <iframe height="100%" allowTransparency="true" frameborder="0" scrolling="yes" style="width:100%;border:none" src="http://yourblogname.wordpress.com/"></iframe>
...but some browsers (such as IE 6) restrict the clickability of the contents of iframes built via iWeb's +HTML Snippet+ window.
To avoid that and other problems, an alternative is to place the blog's logo (_here's WordPress's_) or other thumbnail image on your iWeb page and hyperlink it to your blog, e.g.

  • Display in IE7 and Blog Question

I have looked at some older information regarding display problems in IE7, but have not quite what I am looking for.
On some pages of our site, text is running into other text even though they are in separate text boxes and not near each other and on an address line it drops part off the street name to another line. One image on the home page (just a button) does not completely render. These are not issues in Firefox/Safari.
I am assuming they are CSS related issues but since I can't see the code in iWeb (09) I am not sure how to fix them. I tried importing the published pages in to Dreamweaver, but it changes the display completely.
Also, if we upload to a different server (using 1and1.com), will the blog work correctly?
    Thanks for you assistance.

  • Iweb blog question

When creating a blog is it possible to get rid of the text in the blog link. Basically I just want to use a photo for each link for each blog entry?

Blog should work, but blog commenting and attachment won't.

  • Blog question

When I edit my text on my iweb blog (using the entries page), all the work I've done picking the right fonts and colors, is lost when I go back to the main blog page. On the main blog page I cannot edit the text, it says to do so in the entries page.
Any solutions? Am I missing something? I am new to iweb and to mac's in general, so a simple solution if anyone has one would be great.

It's true, that's the way it is with the templates in iWeb. The text on the main blog page is formatted by the template. All the info there is extracted from the individual blog entry pages without formatting. Don't know if it is worth your trouble to hack the changes. You can alter the number of text characters displayed and the number of entries displayed on the main blog page via the inspector, though. So that gives you a little control, say, if you'd rather get rid of all the unformatted text.

    Thanks In Advance

ebene ~ In iWeb, did you do this:
    • Select a blog or podcast page in the sidebar.
    • If the Blog & Podcast Inspector isn’t open, click Inspector in the toolbar (or choose View > Show Inspector), and then click the Blog & Podcast Inspector button.
    • In the Blog pane of the inspector, select +*“Allow comments.”*+
Then when published to MobileMe and a blog entry is viewed in a browser, you should see "_*Add a Comment*_" at the end of the entry.

  • How can I deal with negative marking in a quiz marking scheme?

I wonder if anyone can help me with a problem I have in developing the 'code' for a marking scheme for an exam in Captivate 8. I would be very grateful for pointers towards a viable solution. At the moment I am just thrashing around.
My background is in C++ and I think part of my problem is in trying to find analogues of functions I would use in that environment. My experience with Captivate is limited to developing fairly simple training courses but now I need to put an existing exam on line, maintaining its relatively complicated marking scheme, which is as follows:
The paper is multiple choice, each question having four statements, one (or at the most two) of which is true. A completely correct answer gets 4 marks so where there are two correct statements each gets 2 marks. So far, so easy.
The difficulty arises from an element of negative marking. If 3 or more statements are selected, the score is 0 marks. If there is a single correct statement and it and an incorrect statement are selected, the score is 2 marks. If there are 2 correct statements and one of them is selected, the score is 2 marks. If an incorrect statement is selected as well, the score is 1 mark.
I had assumed I could use conditional logic and user variables on a slide-by-slide basis to provide a score value and then assign it to the appropriate system quiz variable, but it seems I can't assign values to variables in a quiz slide. That would have been too easy...
So, can anybody advise me on an approach that keeps the advantages of using the quiz framework, including the use of the Review function?
    Any help very gratefully received.

If you use SCORM 1.2 for reporting, negative scores will be converted to zero, because it doesn't allow negative score.
If you want to keep to Review functionality, you need to stay with the default question slides. There are some tweaking possibilities but changing the score is not one of them.

I think the only possible way is to use JS, but then you'll not be able to keep the functionality of the Question slides, you are in custom question slides. Plenty of examples of custom questions can be found on my blog as well.

  • Performance issue in browsing SSAS cube using Excel for first time after cube refresh

    Hello Group Members,
This is a continuation of my earlier blog question -
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/a1e424a2-f102-4165-a597-f464cf03ebb5/cache-and-performance-issue-in-browsing-ssas-cube-using-excel-for-first-time?forum=sqlanalysisservices
As that thread is marked as answer, but my issue is not resolved, I am creating a new thread.
I am facing a cache and performance issue for the first time when I try to open a SSAS cube connection using Excel (using Data tab  -> From Other Sources --> From Analysis Services) after daily cube refresh. In end users system (8 GB RAM but around
4GB available RAM), for the first time, it takes 10 minutes to open the cube. From next run onwards, its open up quickly within 10 secs.
We have daily ETL process running in high end servers. The configuration of dedicated SSAS cube server is 8 core, 64GB RAM. In total we have 4 cube DB - out of which for 3 is full cube refresh and 1 is incremental refresh. We have seen after daily cube
refresh, it takes 10 odd minutes to open the cube in end users system. From next time onwards, it opens up really fast with 10 secs. After cube refresh, in server systems (32 GB RAM, around 4GB available RAM), it takes 2 odd minutes to open the cube.
Is there, any way we could reduce the time taken for first attempt ?
As mentioned in my previous thread, we have already implemented a cube wraming cache. But, there is no improvement.
Currently, the cumulative size of the all 4 cube DB are more than 9 GB in Production and each cube DB having 4 individual cubes in average with highest cube DB size is 3.5 GB. Now, the question is how excel works with SSAS cube after
    daily cube refresh?
Is it Excel creates a cache of the schema and data after each time cube is refreshed and in doing so it need to download the cube schema in Excel's memory? Now to download the the schema and data of each cube database from server to client, it will take
a significant time based on the bandwidth of the network and connection.
Is it anyway dependent to client system RAM ? Today the bigest cube DB size is 3.5 GB, tomorrow it will be 5-6 GB. Now, though client system RAM is 8 GB, the available or free RAM would be around 4 GB. So, what will happen then ?
    Best Regards, Arka Mitra.

Could you run the following two DMV queries filling in the name of the cube you're connecting to. Then please post back the row count returned from each of them (by copying them into Excel and counting the rows).
I want to see if this is an issue I've run across before with thousands of dimension attributes and MDSCHEMA_CUBES performance.
    select [HIERARCHY_UNIQUE_NAME]
    from $system.mdschema_hierarchies
    where CUBE_NAME = 'YourCubeName'
    select [LEVEL_UNIQUE_NAME]
    from $system.mdschema_levels
    where CUBE_NAME = 'YourCubeName'
Also, what version of Analysis Services is it? If you connect Object Explorer in Management Studio to SSAS, what's the exact version number it says on the top server node?

  • Quiz Review--how can I change/customize the buttons in CP7--now showing "back" and "skip"

    Hi,
I am using CP 7 and giving learners the opportunity to review their quiz questions. The review works fairly well, but the buttons at the bottom are not correct. Should say Back and Next or Continue. I don't see a master slide for this, like the Results master slide, where I can edit. Have not found anything useful yet under Object Preferences. Also would be nice to position them. Thanks.

I never show the Next button on a question slide, but drag it under the Clear button, so that it becomes only available during Preview. A skipped question cannot be answered anymore when coming back, it is only confusing. For the same reason I will rarely allow backward movement. Only with the option 'Submit All' it is possible to retake questions within the same Quiz attempt.

  • Audio feedback on quiz buttons

Is there any way to add audio feedback to an automatically generated quiz button when it has been clicked e,g the submit button, undo button etc?
I have put audio feedback on smart shape buttons via advanced actions but an advanced action cannot be assigned to the above buttons.
Failing that is there a way to make a smart shape button into a submit button?
    Many thanks

The embedded objects in quiz slides, those who have no separate timelines, are different from normal interactive objects. There is no real difference between normal buttons and shape buttons as you seem to tell at all, just between embedded buttons that have specific functionality and the normal buttons. There is no way to replace a quiz button by a shape button at this moment, but that wouldn't change the way they act.
If you want audio, you can attach it to the feedback captions (Success, Failure) or put them in actions that are triggered by the Submit button: the Success and Last Attempt actions. More details:

  • Add advanced action to submit button and setting different objectives score for the same course

Hi, i would like to increase a counter in a quiz slide when the user press the submit button, using advanced actions.
It's like if the submit button is somehow inhibited from certain options, and i cannot find how to add an advanced action to it.
what i need, is to allow unlimited attempt until the user selects the right answer. each time the user click on submit, a counter increases by one. When user finally select the right answer, we read the counter value and assign a different score, depending on the attempt (for example: 1st attempt=20 points, 2nd attempt=10 points, 3rd attempt=0 points)
After that, i need to save all score obtained for a certain group of quiz slide separately from the "main score" (i think the main score is stored in cmi.objectives.0.score)  to have partials scores for a course. I examined the "advanced interactions" panel and i noticed that for each quiz slide there is a specific interaction ID and each quiz slide is associated typically to the same Objective ID. What i need is to associate different groups of slides to different Objective ID's.
In Storyline i was able to do this by passing to the lms a cmi.objectives.n.score (where "n" is the place in the objectives array) and i did it by executing a javascript on success for each question slide. (each javascript added the score of previous slides in the same group to obtain the total score of the group to be passed to lms with a specific function).
examining captivate scorm functions in the published scormdriver.js i found the following function
    function SCORM_SetObjectiveScore(strObjectiveID,intScore,intMaxScore,intMinScore)
so i think it can be done the same way in captivate executing javascript in the right way.
Is there also an easier solution to write different scores to different obectives in the same course?
    many thanks for any help!

    Have a look at:
Question Question Slides in Captivate - Captivate blog

Indeed, Submit button is part of the Question slide, not a normal button. You can add a custom shape button, but it will never replace what happens when the Submit button is clicked: validation of the answer, showing captions, adding to score etc. Making the score depending on the attempt is not possible with default functionality, it is possible with custom question slides, but then the reporting to LMS is another issue. You should try to do it by JS, or if you only need SWF-output you could use the Master widget by InfoSemantics.

  • Why My Quiz Status Completion Status Slide Does not Move on to the pre-set Success/Fail slide

    Hi,
I set the Pass or Fail status in the Quiz Preferences as below: If passed, it should jump to Slide 8; if failed, go to Slide 9 (image #1)
But when I am running and testing the file (F4), it will stop at the Assessment Completion Status screen (Image #2) and never jump to the pre-defined slide. Does anybody know why? Thanks!

This happens so often, users are deleting embedded objects on Question or Score slides. Embedded objects have no visible timeline. Some of them can be turned off using checkboxes (like Back, Next buttons on question slides), others disappear automatically (Submit during review, Retake when Quiz attempts are exhausted) but deleting them manually is always a bad idea. And Continue button on the Score slide is as important as the Submit button on Question slides. Those are the buttons that trigger the actions linked to those slides: Success/Last Attempt actions for the Question Slides, and the Passing/Failing grade actions for the Score slide. This is just a bit more in details what Rod told you, not another answer at all.

Those articles describe functionality and tweaking possibilities. They were written for an older versions, but are still valid.
If you want to skip the Continue button, it is possible to create a conditional advanced action that uses the value of the system variable cpQuizInfoPassFail to choose a jump to the appropriate slide.

  • Is there a method of reporting Adobe Captivate quiz results to a Google form or spread sheet?

I found a widget for this but it has been discontinued. The guide published by Rod Ward lists this capability as "Don't even bother". What is that about?

What do you mean by '...at the end'?

Through twitter I learned that you use CP6 and that you want that message on each question slides during ReviewMode.
In CP6 system variable cpInReviewMode is not yet there. Create a user variable v_review, with a default value of 0. You'll have to toggle it to 1 when in Review Mode. That can be done using the system variable cpQuizInfoAttempts. When comparing its value to the total number of attempts, you know if you'll be getting in Review mode when getting back at the Score slide:
use the On Enter event of the score slide
create this conditional action:IF cpQuizInfoAttempts is equal to n       (where n is the number of attempts you allow in the Quiz Preferences on Quiz Level)
       Assign v_review with 1
Create the text caption or shape with text for each slide and make that text container invisible in output (Properties panel). I will label the text container: Tx_quest1, Tx_quest2.....
Use the On Enter event of each Question slide to trigger this conditional action
IF v_review is equal to 1
        Show Tx_quest1
