Blogs with missing photos

Using iWeb 1.1.1., my Blog entries typically include several photos. Increasingly I am finding that over time some of the photos on my Blog entries disappear, i.e., I now have an empty photo rectangle where I used to have a photo. All Blog photos were brought in from iPhoto and are resident on the same computer as my iWeb Domain. I also have many Photos pages on my site and I've noticed that the same photos that are disappearing from my Blogs are fine on the Photos pages.
I bring photos into my Blog entries through the Media Browser, but in two different ways. 1. Using Command drag so that the photos will be inline. 2. Simply dragging, so photos will be fixed. Only inline photos disappear.
I would greatly appreciate any advice about how to solve/avoid this problem.
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1GB RAM/80 GB Drive
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1GB RAM/80 GB Drive

This happened to me. There were three things that caused it...
1. I had reduced the size of the blog description lines (in the Inspector I had told it to display two lines instead of three or four for the description, I think) and there wasn't enough "room" for the picture to show up beside the 1 or 2 line blog entry. So, I just told it to expand it back to three or four line description length. Pictures all showed up again.
2. The pictures also 'disappeared' when the actual text box for the entire blog entry page wasn't "big" enough to display all the entries, PLUS their pictures.
I fiddled about adjusting the size of the particular box on the page (turn on the layout in the menu so you can see the gridlines) - just expanded the box and voila, there were the pictures and their corresponding entries.
3. Also, when I replaced the default picture that shows up in the entry page, I didn't drag my own photo into the box to actually replace it, so I deleted the original default picture out. Now I had my replacement picture show up, but it didn't "kick in" in the Blog description page. I've found that the picture you want to show up must REPLACE the original that iWeb places there, or else it seems to not display in the Blog page.
Don't know if this helps you, but they were the three culprits when it happened to me.
Rachel.

  • Best way to blog with multipel photos?

If I add a blog entry to my website about 100 times per year and I've put an image on each entry that can be clicked to link up to the days photos usually up to around 20 shots/blog entry. This creates a photo page each time. I'll end up with 100 photo pages if I continue to do this. Won't I run out of space before too long?
Should I be creating so many photo pages with only 10 or 20 shots on them?
Not sure how to set this thing up.
    J

why not just put the photos into the actual blog people are clicking on? You can drag and drop photos into the space where you type and change their size too. Of course you can't get the slideshow option like on a photo page but this would make things easier.
Also You could try changing the hyperlink settings and putting more than one day on a photo page.
But I would defiantly go for the blog choice. I do this all the time on my personal website (not the one below), and save the photo pages for more permanent pictures.
I hope this helps a little, Good luck.

  • Blog summary missing photo problem - solution?

Has anyone figured out why iWeb 08 is not showing photos on the blog summary page (home or main page) despite having Show photos checked?
Photos show up on the entries pages but not the *blog summary* pages.

    I figured it out -
At some point, when I first created a new blog entries page, apparently, I deleted the default entries photo (I think it was a snowboarder?). Well, you need to keep the photos from all the templates that have functionality. This entries photo is key to preserving the summary page images (apparently).
So to fix it, you have to create a new entries page then drag a photo onto the default template photo for an entry.
Caveat: I don't know if this action was the cause (I don't think so) or other changes I made around the same time but, now the images for the search entry, RSS Subscribe, and Go to Archive are missing. Ugh.

  • Blog with multiple photos & text

Ok, here is what I'm trying to do. I would like to write something, on the longer side in a blog entry followed by a few photos with text underneath the photos. The place cards seem to be very specific, like the one for the text, it won't let me put anything underneath it.
Is there a certain way you have to set up your blog entry? Why can't I arrange it the way that I want? Please help.
    Thanks

I'm reasonably new to iWeb but found it not difficult to do.
Select the blog template of your choice, and it seems the text panel (they fill it in Latin) is totally changeable - click in it to activate the frame and node squares, then you can drag it down to enlarge it I think as big as you like.
Adding pictures is not that well sorted, imho, because if u drag a picture in then it sits on top of the text, if you select the point of entry, press Apple key and drag, it then creates runaround of the text, which you then counter in Inspector by specifying Object Wrap (left or right). Resizing that pic is easy, moving it once it's position has been pre-determined (see above) seems impossible. Captions are a doddle, add text box underneath, alter the text size accordingly.
Here's my blog (I do hate that word!) following 4-days of experience...http://www.teamuki.com/apgblog
You will see that some entries are longer than others, I did the stuff above. Don't know if it's textbook but it seems to work.

  • IPhoto Book with Missing Pictures

I submitted this problem via the Apple support site but have not received an answer. I am hoping someone visiting this forum might have advice.
I ordered a 50-page hardcover 8.5x11 iPhoto Book (theme: Modern Lines) that I created using iPhoto 6.0 on a G5 Mac running OS 10.4.4. This was my first iPhoto book. The book, when assembled, looked perfect in the main book window, and I also saved a pdf of it, which was (and is) perfect as well. When the book arrived, I was very pleased with the quality of the printing, except that seven photos (some but not all of the photos on four separate pages) were not printed in their places in the book (there is just white space there).
I then opened the saved file of the book within iPhoto on my computer. When I went to the pages where the printed book is missing photos, I was surprised to see the following. In the main book window, the photos appear initially, for just an instant, and then disappear. In the main book window I then just see white spaces where the seven photos should be (just as in the printed book). This was not the case when I first created the book and placed the order – all photos were present in these places in the book (as the pdf I made just before placing the order confirms). Also, curiously, on the pages with the missing photos, even now the photos do appear in the small images of these pages in the page browser at the top of the iPhoto window, although as mentioned, the photos do not appear (except initially for an instant) in the main book window.
I have since updated to iPhoto 6.0.1 and OS 10.4.5, and the book appears the same with missing photos in the main window, but appearing correctly in the browser.
As you can imagine, I am very disappointed to have spent $70 for a book with seven of the critical photos missing. I assume that there is some bug in iPhoto causing this problem. Has anyone experienced anything like this before? Any suggestions?

I looked on the forum for iPhoto 5, and found a discussion of a similar problem: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=315857&tstart=45
Essentially, the picture you see in iPhoto is a corrupted file. In my case, I deleted the pictures from the library that weren't showing up correctly, emptied the trash, and reimported the originals. Voila! No more missing images. Things are now showing up correctly.

  • Best strategy for dealing with a mixed library and missing photos

Looking at the package contents of my iPhoto Library, it appears that I have a "mixed" library (i.e. part managed and part referenced). I'm not sure how this happened--I originally created this library about three years ago when I first bought my Mac with iLife '06, then later upgraded to iLife '08 which I'm currently still using. Maybe the default setting was to have a referenced library in iPhoto '06? Don't know. I don't recall ever changing this setting.
Anyway, I was starting to manually recover some missing photos but it just occurred to me that iPhoto is simply updating the aliases to point to the photos I'm telling it to use, and not actually copying the photos into the library (I'm guessing that only happens when you import a photo). This is not what I want. I want my library to be completely managed. I understand that, as my current Preferences settings dictate, any new photos I import now will be copied into the iPhoto Library. But for the existing photos that I am able to recover, I don't want to have to keep the originals outside of iPhoto.
I read in another topic about an application called AliasHerder and I'm thinking of trying that. The problem is, I no longer have original copies of all of the missing photos. I can recreate the folder structure for some of them but not all. I'm not sure what this will do to my iPhoto Library (I have emailed the vendor for clarification). I'm wondering if I'll still end up with a mixed library containing aliases that point to a non-existent file. Perhaps someone who has some experience with the tool could enighten me.
Based on suggestions given to me in previous posts I made, I tried both rebuilding my iPhoto Library and using the iPhoto Library Manager tool. Neither of these produced the results I had hoped for. Am I better off just starting off from scratch and creating a whole new library? And if so, what's the best way to get all of the existing photos from my current library to the new one? Do I export them out and then import them into the new library? Is there any way to salvage events, albums, etc. from my existing library or will I have to recreate these in the new library?
    Thanks in advance!

First check iPhoto's Advanced preference pane to make sure you're running a "managed" library.
Since you don't have the "source" photos available to relink to your best bet, IMO, would be to continue using your current library and delete those missing photos from it whenever you come across them in day to day use. If you click on the thumbnail of a missing photos and drag it to the iPHoto trash and empty it that will delete it from the library. This way you will retain all of your organizational efforts, i.e. albums, books, keywords, etc.
When you rebuilt with iPhoto Library Manager what did the resulting library contain? If it contained your photos without the missing photos you could use it. You would retain your albums, keywords, faces, places and other metadata. You will lose any keepsakes, i.e. books, slideshows, cards, etc.
Or, you could start over as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
1 - Move the existing library folder to the desktop
2 - Open the library package like this.
3 - Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
4 - Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
You will end up with all your photos (no missing photos) in the same events as in the original library. But there will be no albums, metadata or keepsakes. It's for this reason I made the original suggestion of continuing with your current library above.
    OT
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Problems with "find nearby missing photos", not working like it should in LR4

After I imported photos into LR4 I decided to split the event within the same folder creating 2 subfolders and proceeded to move the files within the finder. Went to LR4 and synchronized the folder but it didn't fix the file location on the missing files. So I tried finding individual files and checked the "Find nearby missing photos" but this doesn't seem to work like it did in LR3, because it won't find any nearby missing files even though they are right there new to each other in the same folder.
I don't want to dremove them and re-import because I have added ratings and I fear I would loose this info if I did that...

Your assumption that you would loose your ratings and develop settings is correct, if you would re-import.
Reimporting is never a good idea.
For the rest you have two alternatives: either you reconnect one image after another, or you undo on OS level what you did in the first place, then execute the move inside LR.
Depending on how many images you moved this could actually be the fastest route out.
"Find nearby missing photos" did not work reliably for me either in LR3. I have never found out when it did and when not, so I have preferred to learn how to perform any such operation inside LR.
Another valid question is why you do not use collections for your desired split , and leave the folders as they were.
According to my prejudice MAC users would not be as conservative in sticking to folder structures as Windows users..;-))
Once you master LR folders could be very unimportant storage buckets, as every angle for organizing your images would be covered by (smart) collections and keywords and other metadata.
    Good luck, Cornelia

  • Having an issue with "offline or missing" photos in LR

Im trying to save space on my Mac so I have moved some photos to an external drive.  But now LR will show a preview of the pics, but can't find them for editing, etc.  I was under the impression that LR could locate them on an external drive so that I could work on them without taking up so much space on my hard-drive.  Is this correct, or am I just wishin?!?!?!  If this is the case, how can I get LR to find those photos?  And as a disclaimer, I'm super simple minded when it comes to the computer/tech stuff...so please explain in laymans terms (ok, idiot terms would be best!)
    Thanks!

You should have made the move of your images inside LR by drag and drop.
Now you have broken the links to the images that LR knew by moving them outside via finder, and now you need to tell LR where the new destination is.
Hopefully you have not changed the folder structure.
Ctrl-click on the missing folder highest in your folder hierarchy and relink it to the new destination on the external drive.
Then all questionmarks for missing images should disappear.
Should you have changed your folder structure during your finder-move you have to relink individual images, but can click on "find nearby missing photos".

  • Missing template/missing photos

Two problems in the last 24 hours with iWeb. After publishing a new entry yesterday, I noticed that previous blog entries containing photos are now missing the photos and in their place is a gray box with an X through it and a ? in the center. Spoke with Apple Care for over an hour and they are not sure of the problem and suggested I post to this board while they work on it.
They believe it is a server problem. For some reason information (specifically photos) are getting "lost" in transit to/from my iDisk.
This morning I noticed that I can not add a new entry using my "Elegant" template because the "Elegant" template no longer exists on iWeb. Has it been removed from iWeb for some reason or is it just me?
Any ideas regarding what is happening here?
I did tell Apple Care that other iWeb uses are having the same problem with the gray boxes with the X and ? appearing in place of photos - so I am not the only one with this problem. The main concern is that some of the missing photos were published on my website MONTHS ago and those entries have not been touched since. Why would they suddnly vanish? If happened to me yesterday (with about 10 photos) it can happen again.

I'm answering my own question. Basically iWeb became corrupted and I had to reinstall iWeb with the help of an Apple Care Product Specialist - it took about an hour! Our guess is that I brought a corrupted photo into iPhoto and "passed" on this corruption to iWeb when I transfered photos from iPhoto to iWeb.
There have been other posts indicating similar problems, particularly with photos dissappearing and being replaced with a gray box, and X and ? mark. If this has happened to you I suggest you contact Apple Care or make an appointment at a Genius Bar to have them help you reinstall iWeb. FYI the product specialist had me publish my existing website to a folder before doing the reinstall. That way after iWeb was reinstalled, we were able to transfer my original site back to iWeb where it now runs flawlessly.

  • Iphoto keeps freezing up and events do not show photos, missing photos, constant crashes

I have a recurring issue that is causing major headaches. It involves iPhoto (9.4.3 the latest version currently) and I noticed that photos and videos I had imported seemed to be missing. I started looking deeper and there were photos and specifically videos that I just could not find. I had synced them from my iphone via a cable sync.  What is odd is I found some of them in an event farther in on my events list but that is when more probalems started occuring.  iPhoto froze up on me while I was working with the photos. Now when I open iPhoto I have 3 events that have photos and videos in them but the event do not have a visible photo, instead they show a grey icon with palm trees on it. If I go inside one of these events I initially see photos and videos that I took but if I try to work with them, view them, move them, or split them iPhoto becomes unresponsive and I have to force quit or wait for it to crash.  This is frustrating because I can't really use iphoto lately it always seems to crash and I don't know all the causes for that.  I also feel bummed because I don't know if these photos will be lost or if some of the other photos are lost.  I don't know what to do. I tried verifying my disk and permissions with DU and fixed a few issues there but that did not do anything to reslove this issue.

For finding images be sure your sort is set correctly - view manu ==> sort events
For the crashes backup your iPhoto library, depress teh option and command keys, launch iPhoto an drebuild your database

  • Help please - unable to open missing photos 'browse' dialogue box

    Hi All,
new to the forum, but long time LR user.
I have a problem with LR v.3.4.1 I have a few missing photos (quite a few actually) in my catalogue from when I moved hard drives in v1.  I jumped from v.1 to v3.  But used to be able to find them still.
Now when I click the ? icon the browse dialogue box won't open.  Double clicking only switches from thumnail to full size - though there are no index images of these photos.
I've checked the drives, the images still exist.  I tried re-iporting the images to see if that would bring them up as duplicates, but the LR finder would not see any images there.
Since switching from v.1 to v.3 I have done quite a few shoots, and I'd be sad (no mortified!) to loose either bit of editing work.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks
    Damian

I should say, this is the case for both my Macbook Pro running v10.5.8
and my new today, iMac running v10.6.7

  • How to reset paths (NOT missing photos)

I have created a new folder with all my photos. Within it are individual folders named by year (2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009...).
I have several old catalogs with photos pointing to different files on several external HDs.  I want to relink them nice and neatly so that they all point to the photos on my newly created folder on a dedicated external HD.
How can I relink all the photos? I've searched all over the internet but the only information that I can find are those related to "missing photos and question marks in the corner (and not just "resetting paths" as in Expression Media/iView).   I have attempted to FORCE the question mark and relink it that way but Lightroom will not find nearby files. It only finds photos taken on the same day.
There must be some easy way like in Expression Media/iView to simply reset the path, i.e., manually relink in big batches (all photos in one folder).
I'd be so grateful for any insight and solutions anybody could offer me.

You've a couple of routes - for individual images, or for folders.
With individual images, it depends on the image being missing. If it has a little question mark or exclamation mark in the corner in grid view, click the missing file marker and point to where the photo is now located. Ensure "Find Nearby" is ticked, and press OK. LR will read the filenames of other missing files and try to find them too. This route is no use if the image is not missing.
With folders, you can right click any folder. You get a question mark if the folder is missing, and right click - "Find Missing Folder". If the folder is not missing, the context menu is "Update Folder Location". In each case you can now point to the new folder location.
To make it easy on yourself, right click a parent folder and update its location. Its child folders will then be updated too.
    Does that help?

  • Missing photos in iPhoto '08 v. 7.1.3

This is hardly a "new" topic on this discussion but after trying every recommendation I have been able to find, I am still no further forward so would appreciate any other suggestions that might be forthcoming.
When iPhoto is launched it shows, at the foot, 17,528 items. Click on a thumbnail and one of two thing happens: either, and this is the good one, the photo launches normally or, and this is the other, up pops the greyed out area with the exclamation mark. If I understand that correctly it either means that the original photo is "missing" or that iPhoto is unable to link to it.
An Info check on the iPhoto library shows 12.86 GB. However, on the originals folder only it shows 5.49 GB for 7,506 items.
I have tried all the rebuild facilities offered by iPhoto. No change.
I have installed iPhoto Library Manager and tried to rebuild the library using that: it hangs, showing "getting photo information"...which it doesn't. I had to close it using Force Quit.
I have used the "extract photos" facility in that program - it tells me that 5,589 photos have been extracted.
None of the figures tie up - and I'm not even clear if they are supposed to do so.
The real mystery to me is that the "missing" photos seem entirely random: in a group of, say 10, photos which were imported together 1 or 2 might be missing, all might be, none might be. There is just no discernible "pattern" to the problem.
So, two questions, really: (1) any bright ideas as to what to try next or what might be causing this and (2) if my library is terminally corrupted then it seems to me I should start a brand new library using the extracted photos as the basis then add others from CDs and DVDs, but in doing so is there a way of avoiding duplication?
    Thanks in anticipation...
    Ryetee

    Ryetee
To create a library from scratch - which is what you need to do as you do have a damaged library:
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
