Blu ray burner options?

Hi Everyone,
I am looking to get an internal Blu Ray burner for my Mac Pro but sadly I realized that the internal connection is PATA. OWC offers a wide variety of Blu Ray burners but all the internal ones are SATA. Does anyone know if an adapter exists to make this work? Or should I give in and maybe go for an external FireWire 800 model?
I do have Windows XP SP2 installed via Bootcamp and whatever model I get would need to be recognized in both platforms. I'm just having some trouble understanding this high definition technology.
Suggestions? Please
Rio

Hi Malcolm,
Thanks for the link. Very useful info and solution. In the meantime I found an MCE Blu-ray burner but I'm not sure if it would be a better solution that the one you have provided. This one is quite expensive and I don't know this company's credibility. Here is the address:
http://www.mcetech.com/blu-ray/#osxcompat
I wonder if it would be a better investment to get the adapter you suggested and get a SATA Blu-ray burner which could, if needed be inserted into an enclosure if I wanted to use it externally with another computer in the future. Would the speed be affected by using it externally?

  • DVD & Blu Ray Burner Drive Trays Do Not Stay Open When Media is in the Drive

I have a problem with both Windows 8/8.1 and the Windows 10 Technical Preview (there is no issue when I run Windows 7).
I have 2 optical drives: 1) DVD Burner and 2) Blu Ray Burner (I just got the second drive a few weeks ago). They are attached to the secondary SATA Chip (see below for specifics).
The problem I'm having is that when I eject media from either drive, the drive does not stay open, but rather immediately closes. Before I got the Blu Ray Burner, I had this problem with just the single DVD Burner by itself. I was hoping when I installed
Windows 10 Technical Preview that this problem would not be present, but it is present in that O/S as well.
This problem will repeat continuously if I attempt to use the eject button and so I either have to grab the disc while the tray is moving, or if I press the eject button again on the drive at the right time, I can get it to re-open and not close (this
is tricky to get the button timing right as it seems like it has to be done close to when the drive tray is fully extended when it starts retracting). It usually takes me 5 to 10 button presses to get it to stay open. Sometimes it will stay open for about
0.5 to 1s before it closes again, but most of the times it just immediately closes. I also have the same problem if I use the software eject feature by right clicking on the drive and choosing eject.
Of course, the expected behavior is that pressing the eject button should open the tray, but not close it immediately allowing you to remove the disc.
Here is some background information about my system and how the drives are connected:
    1. Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP45-ED3P Revision 1.0 LGA 775
    2. Interface (for both drives): Gigabyte SATA II Chip - 2 x SATA 3 GB/s connectors (GSATA2_0, GSATA2_1) supporting up to 2 SATA 3 GB/s devices
    3. Memory: 8 GB (4 x 2 GB)
It should be noted that I tri-boot between Windows 7, 8/8.1, and 10 Technical Preview and that this issue is not present in Windows 7, but has always been there in Windows 8/8.1 and now it is present in 10TP as well.
I've had this system for just over 6 years now and it is still going strong. It should be noted that I have both drives on the secondary SATA chip (as identified above), which is meant to be used with removable SATA devices.
Since the problem exhibits itself in both Windows 8/8.1 and 10TP, a reinstall of the O/S will have no affect on this problem and so this appears to be some other issue that is consistent between Windows 8/8.1 and 10TP.
I'd appreciate your support in looking at this issue - thanks!

    Hey Zagayer,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
As you now have two optical drives in your Mac Pro, you need to be able to choose which drive to eject.  That is built into the system.  You just hold the Option key while tapping eject for the 2nd drive.
OS X Mountain Lion: Eject a disk
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10613
If your computer has two optical drives, hold down Option-Media Eject or Option-F12 to eject a disc from the second drive.
    Have a nice day,

  • Final Cut Pro X witch Blu-ray Burner are you using ...

Using a Mac Pro Tower like the Mac Pro 2012 or similar what are the Blu-ray Internal Burners do you use ; LG or Pioneer , witch Model Number.
Creating Blu-ray on the Mac is fantastic but witch brand and model numbers for the Big Mac Pro Tower are you using with exellent results now.
On the Mac Apple Pro Apps or Roxio Toast Titanium are the only left options who are current and updated , but burners specified for Windows.
Frustration come when you talk to Apple they say not supported , Burners makers LG or Pioneer will say we dont offer support on the Mac.
Well if you can create Blu-ray on the Mac but cant get any help to burn it it is very frustrating and Not So Pro if Apple care for the Pro Users.

I use the new Mac Pro 2013. Final Cut Pro X version 10.1.4 and Maverick OS 10.9.5. An external Blu-ray burner LG BE14NU40. I've use single burn Blu-ray discs from brands like Maxell and Verbatim. That works fine. I have double layers Blu-ray discs not tried. I use it for home video’s.
DVD single works fine too. DVD double layers I have not tried but will also work i think. Reviews on LG USA stated that Roxio Titanium with corresponding plugin works.
I'm glad I found a blu-ray burner that works with FCPX.  Compressor 4.1.3 but I have not been working with the LG burner. Not yet!

  • FCP 7 "Share to blu-ray" burn issue.

This may not actually be a FCP issue, but possibly some of you here are experienced in the matter.
Firstly, my video is 1080/24p ProRes.
This is my first jump into Blu-ray, and I'm quickly learning the many work-arounds, but have run in to a problem.
Initially I tried exporting a QuickTime with "current settings", and dropping it in toast and encoding/burning.
Video looked pretty good, but it was choppy. Google tells me this seems to be a common issue with toast and 24p.
Most suggest encoding with Compressor and then burning with Toast.
Tried that, but I couldn't get it to just encode the files and that be all. It kept asking for a blu-ray disc and ejecting the drive, as if Compressor was going to burn it?
When I would choose "cancel burn", my only option, the whole batch would fail. After all that encoding time...
Wasn't too depressed, because after digging more, Google also told me that many believe the h264 encode using the "share" function in FCP produces better results. Though the options are non-existent, it did great. My only complaint is you are forced to convert audio to .ac3. Well that *****.
So I went ahead and exported all the audio from IN and OUT markers as .aiff.
This is where my problem arrives..
I threw the h264 and aiff in Toast, chose "never re-encode", and it burnt fine.
Video looks great, no stuttering. But the AUDIO! It slows drifts out of sync...
Video is an hour long, and at about 20 minutes in, it's 1-2 seconds behind, and goes from there.
    Why would that be?
    Any experience with this?
I checked, and the ac3 that FCP made, and the aiff are the EXACT same length.
Any thoughts? Or any other work-around for keeping audio lossless?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply, Johnny.
I wasn't saying AC3 s*u*c*k*s. And really.. Why is that word censored? I didn't do that.
I was saying it ***** that you ONLY have the option of AC3 with the "Share to blu-ray" feature.
And yea, I'm sure I would never know the differene, and especially not my grandparents with their home movies.
But it just seems d*u*m*b (can I say that?) to be going through all this trouble for a "lossless" lineage, ie. HD camera, FCP, Blu-ray burner/player, and have to compress the audio. Isn't that one of the main advantages of blu-ray?! Quality? Wether we can detect it or not?! Ha!. Okay..
I thought an easy workaround would be to export the audio to AIFF and drop it in.
No idea why it's drifting....but yes, in the end i may settle.
Though I'll feel cheated! Guess that's what I get for loving BOTH Apple and Blu-ray....
If anyone has other processes of getting good 24p to Blu-ray, please share!
    Thanks again.

  • Blu Ray burn problem

I'm trying to burn a blu-ray disk from a 5 minute FCP X video.  Each time I try I get the following message:
The bit rate of the video file exceeded the maximum allowable.
How can I work around this?

What Blu-ray burner do you have? Is it recognized in the Device Manager under DVD/CD-ROM drives? Driver and Firmware up to date?
What burn software came with the Blu-ray burner? If it is part of the CyberLink family, can you use the PowerProducer of the series to burn to Blu-ray disc format on a Blu-ray disc using these Blu-ray discs that Premiere Elements burn dialog is labelling "Media Not Present"? I would like to see the results of that test if possible.
Just to get it out of the way (maybe helpful), let us flush the preferences...
Assuming your Premiere Elements 11 is on Windows 7 or 8 64 bit....
    Local Disk C
    Users
    Owner
    AppData
    Roaming
    Adobe
    Premiere Elements
    11
and in the 11 Folder is the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs Folder that you delete. If that does not work, then delete the whole 11 Folder in which it exists.Make sure that you are working with Folder Options/Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives active so that you can see the path described.
If that does not work, a complete Deactivation from Help Menu/Deactivate followed by the usual Control Panel uninstalled followed by reinstall may be in order. I am hoping the results from a CyberLink PowerProducer burn to may give us some valuable information so that we do not have to resort to uninstall/reinstall.
Are you using BD-R 25 GB 2X? What is this BD-R DL? Is that the 50 GB for Blu-ray? Do you have any BD-RE 25 GB 6X? How much are you planning on putting on this Blu-ray disc in terms of Space Required and duration?
Let us start here and then we can decide what next.
    Thanks.

  • Will Adobe Encore CS4 burn MTS files to an external blue ray burner if I buy one?

Will Adobe Encore CS4 recognize/burn MTS files to an EXTERNAL blue ray burner if I buy one?

Internal vs external should not matter.
I have a burned to external with CS4, but it was a long time ago.
And most importantly, Encore is not a reliable burner for many users, and they, and I, use imgBurn rather than Encore to burn.
Also, "burn an MTS" file is totally different from authoring and burning. Encore (was it by CS4?) added a limited AVCHD passthrough option. I have not used it.

  • Blu ray burner question - FCP X

I am getting ready to purchase my first blu ray burner.
I make 2 hour videos and the files become quite large. Mostly natively ingested camera video utilizing motion templates, titles. transitions, vo, music, etc.
    1. Do I need a 128G capacity burner?
    2. What is the best quality burner at around $150-300?
    3.  Do I need Toast due the size of my output?
    Thanks
    Sandra

I don't know about the best Blu-ray burner to get (although I would check out those at OWC) but I DO know that you will need Toast Titanium with the Blu-ray option to burn to Blu-ray as OS X doesn't natively support burning Blu-ray.
Go to the OWC website - I think that they sell Toast Titanium at a good price with some of their BR devices.

  • How do I stop my Blu-Ray burner from "sleeping" or going offline?

I recently installed a PIONEER BD-RW BDR-206 Blu-Ray burner in my Mac Pro.  After about an hour or so it apparently goes to sleep or does something where the computer does not recognize it anymore.  And I can't do anything to bring it back other than restart the computer.
This poses a significant problem when I use Compressor to burn Blu-Ray discs because Compressor might take 10 hours to process, then when it's done I lose everything because it can't burn the disc because the computer doesn't see the blu-ray burner anymore.
The only way I've found to get around this is to eject and then close the burner every hour or so.  That's a good band aid, but not acceptable.  Especially when I set to burn overnight or I leave the office for the day.
I've gone through System Settings and do not see anything pertaining to this, but I'd be happy to admit if I've overlooked something to fix this issue!
    Please offer any feedback,
    Thank you.
    Eric P

Thanks Dennis.   I believe I did try that option to no avail.  After talking with the techs where I got it (MacSales or MacWorld... don't remember off hand now) they said that that particular burner was known for this issue with Macs.  They work with Macs, but they have that problem of going offline even if all computer settings say to stay active.  I ultimately purchased a different brand burner and now it works no problem.
I also bought a casing for the old Pioneer so that I could still use it.
    Thanks,
    Eric

  • JVC Everio HD and PRE9 - Optimal Settings to Blu-ray burn

I have a new GZ-HM550 (AVCHD 1920x1080/60i and have really been struggling with finding an NLE that I like.   I have plenty of computer (Dell Vostro, quad core, 4GB RAM, XP Pro, blu-ray burner) that I use for my photography business.   I've tried Pinnacle Studio (sucks - poor output), and now PRE9 and I'm not confident I'm doing it right because I can't get blu-rays to author properly - just won't play on the deck.   The only program I've found that works is the one that shipped with the JVC, and it's very limited in creativity.
I Adobe Creative Suite CS4 on the machine, but didn't think to buy CS4 Premiere when I bought everything else.   CS5 Premiere would work, but only supports 64bit op systems and for now I need to stick with XP for other reasons - so I'm looking for a NLE that will work with these very large .mts files   I was hoping that PRE9 would be it, but so far I don't think so, everything seems to take forever, and it looks like it's transcoding when it burns to Blu-Ray - which I wouldn't think it should need to.
Any guidance or advice on how to set up project and share options to get high quality output with this combination?  Desired projects will be wedding and event videos with relatively simple transitions and menu's but in highest possible quality to blu-ray disc

    Welcome to the forum.
There are only two formats allowed on BD, HD MPEG-2, and BD-compliant H.264. Though the AVCHD is a sub-set of H.264, it is not quite the same as the BD-compliant H.264, so one will need to Transcode for BD authoring.
One thing that I am not sure of (don't have PrE 9, so I cannot check), is whether PrE offers a choice of BD format. Others will be able to tell you though.
Also, just as with DVD, I strongly recommend using the best quality blank media, when doing BD. The quality and playability will be much higher. Verbatim is about as good as it gets. Memorex is about as bad as it gets. Store brands, and many others, are nearly as bad as Memorex. What brand of blank media have you been testing on?
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Install an internal blu-ray burner on a 24' iMac 2.4 Ghz

Been trying to find an internal blu-ray burner drive to install on my 24 inch iMac 2.4. Does anyone know of an internal drive I can use. Thanks all.

Get a Panasonic UJ-235 (SATA) or UJ-225 (ATA). I installed one in my 27" iMac. It works like it came from Apple. Any 12.5 mm slot loading optical drive will work in an iMac, but the best option is the UJ-235. Your best bet on finding one is on ebay as they aren't redily avaliable for retail purchase as they are mainly for oem aplications. Wait, check to see if you optical drive is sata or ide, if it is ide you can't use the UJ-235, it will take the UJ-225. the way to check is in the sytem information. Look under ATA, if it is your current superdrive will be listed there adn go with the UJ-225. then check serial-ATA, if the suoerdrive is listed there then go with the UJ-235. Toast will burn a bluray, makemkv will rip one, and Mac BluRay palyer will play it. You can do a decrypted rip an clone a commercial blu ray with MakeMKV and toast. But there is no reson to do that because the blank double layer discs are more expensive than buying the movie. Also Handbrake is now bluray ready, you have to do a decryted rip first. But you can make a m4v file that is much better than ones you purchase on itunes. itunes only has them in 720p right now but you can make them in 1080p with handbrake, and incrase the bitrate. Granted, it will take about 12 hours with the 2.4 dual core intel, but it will do it. I have the 3.4 i7 with 32 gb of ram and it takes about 3 hours. I heard a 12 core mac pro can do it in 20 min, so long as the ram is maxed out at 96 gb. But my set up ran about $4,000 and the mac pro set up like that will push $10,000.
Really, your best bet is to use a full speed external through firwire 800 or usb2. The read and burn speed is determined by the drive anyway and those fullsized drives are so much faster than laptop internal drives that the iMac uses.

  • Encore CS4 refuses to see Blu-ray burner

Using Encore CS4, I had previously been able to burn HD video using my LG Blu-ray burner. Recently though i have been unable to build my projects and bun to Blu-ray. I get a "None Found" from the Recorder selection of the Build Project window even though the burner does display as an option when I select DVD as the recording format. I believe that one of two possibliites exist: 1. Some other software driver has broken my blu-ray driver and Encore can no longer see it, or 2. Some other software has captured the blu-ray burner device and Encore can no longer use it. I have already removed "Nero" because i have herad that it can cause Encore grief. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Premiere Elements 11 no longer recognizes my external blu-ray burner.

I have used my Samsung SE-506BB-TSBD external burner many times before today, but for some reason Premiere Elements 11 is not recognizing it. Windows 7 sees it just fine. Premiere Elements 8 (which is still loaded on the same computer) also does not recognize it.
What do I need to do? Samsung's website is no help, but I have a feeling it's an Adobe issue since Windows 7 still recognizes the drive.

When is your Blu-ray burner not recognized
Premiere Elements 11: burn to DVD disc, burn to Blu-ray disc, burn to AVCHD on DVD disc, or all?
Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1: burn to DVD disc, burn to Blu-ray disc, or both?
    and when you wrote:
I have used my Samsung SE-506BB-TSBD external burner many times before today
Did "....many times before today" imply that you could use the burner for Premiere Elements 11 and 8.0/8.0.1 before. I am trying to get a whether this is a "it worked before but now" or a "it never worked before" type issue.
Do you have the USB 2.0 cable connected to a USB 2.0 computer port directly or via a USB multi port hub? I take it that this burner does not have AC support? If you are using only 1 USB 2.0 port, can you set up the burner for 2 USB 2.0 ports?
Does the computer involved have an internal burner? Or is this the only burner that you have available to you external or internal for the computer?
