Blu-Ray drives with Mac OS Tiger!

There is question that i want to make to you all:
Can i ugrade my DVD drive to a Blu-Ray drive and use it with the Mac OS X Tiger?
Does anyone do that already? It work´s???

Unfortunately, the newer Pioneer drives are not yet supported "officially" by the Apple OS. From what I can see they are only up to the DVR-109. I'm hoping that 10.4.6 will bring everything up to date. BUT . . . there are things that you can do to get the same if not better performance from the drive and make the current OS think it's supporting the drive. I have a 110D that I flashed (installed firmware that belongs to another model drive, somewhat dangerous) to a 110 that allows it expanded features that are basically unnecessary unless you are "power user". I did it and won't need/use these features. Had to play.
First and foremost is to use PatchBurn to "trick" the OS into thinking all is well and treating the drive as a foregone supported unit that will allow iLife products to access it.
The only thing that I have noticed is that the drive does not respond real quick. I'm not sure if it is the drive or the fact that it is being "tricked" in. The only difference between your 111D and my 110 is a design change that supposedly makes it quieter during operation.
So as far as I have seen the Pioneer line of drives are basically guaranteed when it comes to using them in a Mac.
I'm currently toying with adding a LaCie Lightscribe unit that has half the performance of the Pioneers, but does Laser scribing labeling. My fear is OS compatibility.
Check it out and play as you must, because the OS will never keep up with drive development.

Hello everyone. I read a post on this forum about installing a blu ray drive in a mac and it working perfect. Now my question is, will it work if I have bootcamp and switch over to windows XP. Otherwords will the drive work on windows XP on the mac using bootcamp???? thanks

Windows doesn't recognize the spare SATA ports on the motherboard. So if that is what you were going to use, no.

Use of Pioneer BDR-2208 blu-ray drive with MacPro

Any suggestions for getting a Pioneer BDR-2208 blu-ray drive to work with a Mac Pro running OSX 10.8.3.? The machine recognizes the drive with the system profiler, but I was able to access it only one time and never again. It's installed in second position beneath the factory DVD drive, and pressing Option-Eject brings up a message box suggesting, incorrectly, that I have loaded a blank DVD and requesting an action. Pioneer tech support says that it was intended for use for a Windows machine, but indicates that 3rd-party software might enable its use on a Mac.

Have you tried Roxio Toast 11 Titanium?
This should provide all the functions you require but.... will not provide "all" features associated with the 2208.
"All" features are software based and currently written for Windows only.
I currently use the BDR-208 as my secondary optical drive and with Toast,.... it works perfectly.
Toast 11 Titanium provides Mac drivers for BD and BDXL media not included in Mountian Lion.
I too am considering the 2208 (due to BDXL) but seeking feedback like yours before I purchase.
If my budget allows.... I will try the 2208 with Toast 11 at some point but cannot provide anything but suggestion at this point in time.

That is correct. It cannot be extended. That is the limit for the built-in display. Using an external display that is capable of higher resolution might help in that matter but then you loose the portability of the laptop.

It is the only free BluRay player I have found.
That is about all I can do to help. The other possibility would be to get an external Bluray drive that can fulfill all your expectations, give you lightscribe, and possibly a BluRay player included with the purchase. It would be much less worrisome on your part and there would not be any modifications to the laptop.

Installing a Blu-Ray Drive in my Mac Pro...

I am considering installing a Blu-Ray drive in my second drive location on my mac pro. The drive I am interested in is this one:

When I spoke with the gentlemen there, he advised me that he didn't believe it would fit in the Mac Pro. How could that be? Isn't there a standard size for all media drives like DVD, CD, and blu-ray drives? Anyone know for sure if this will fit?

It is a standard sized drive and WILL fit
Although you should always be mindful to be sure that you have remove ALL bezels which can interfere with the drive fitting else the drawer mechanism. The easy way to be sure is to make it look exactly like the SuperDrive. The one that is typically missed is the bezel that's right on the end of the drawer. It can be had to spot but it's there.

Blu-Ray: Anyone ever replace the cd drive with a after market blu-ray drive

I have replaced cd drives in the older iBooks and back then they used a standard cd rom drive.

I don't recommend you do that. I wouldn't trust rumors, but here is one for you. People have said that Apple might be releasing new macs with blu-ray support. So I don't recommend you replace the drive. Let me tell you again, it's only a rumor, so don't count on it.

The questions to ask them is:
1. Which applications can be used to burn bluray movies from it?
2. Which applications can be used to playback commercial bluray from it?
3. Does it let you burn DVDs from iDVD, iTunes and the Finder as well as CDs and CD-RWs?
4. Does it support both DVD-R DL and DVD+R DL for burning and playback?
5. Does it allow for booting from the system installer that shipped with the machine and running the hardware test that shipped with the machine?
6. Do you get to keep the original optical drive in case you want to troubleshoot if system issues are due to their drive?
Some of these may already be on the website, I just haven't taken the time to look it completely over.

Satellite L775-119 - Upgrade with blu-ray drive?

Had my L775-119 for a few weeks, and it's going great, really pleased but am just wondering if it's possible, sometime in the future to upgrade the DVD RW Drive to a Blu ray re-writer?

Im not Satellite L775 owner but I think it should be possible because some L770/L775 models are delivered with blu-ray drive so generally speaking it seems that the notebook support such drives.
But you can get an exact answer from an authorized service provider. The guys can order a compatible drive for you and install it if you are not familiar with notebook part exchange.
Do you know how to contact an authorized service provider?

And yes it's plug and play-I have found you need to make sure the burner is plugged in and turned on before you open any windows to create bluray content. and best to only put in burning media when FCS asks for it which is after it has done the encoding.

Problems with IQ810UK DVD Blu Ray Drive

Hi - My IQ810uk is only a few weeks old and I'm having trouble already...
My DVD / Blu Ray drive is playing up.... It seems really tempremental. I put purchased Audio CD's in and they are not recognized every time.
Also, I'm trying to import my cd's into iTunes but they nearly always get stuck on track 7 or 8. I have not had one cd import correctly yet! It just seems a bit of a coincedence that it stops on the same tracks.
I tried the same cds on my old pc and they worked first time. Its as if the drive gets to a certain point on the disc and then stops.
I'm really disappointed with this PC - never had so many problems with a new computer - especially one that cost £1500!

i suspect your itunes is a bit dodgy, only because you don't see the same issue when playing the same music in WMP.... however also sounds to me your drive might not be functioning all that well - you might want to check the windows event logs for any system errors that relate to the dvd drive, if there are errors then probably best to call HP Support, I'd say call HP Support regardless as it does sound like the dvd drive is playing up...

Can i upgrade to a blu ray drive

I have a late 07 macbook 13" (white) and have been looking into upgrading the optic drive, since the one in it cant even write dvds. So i pondered why not go all the way and instead of getting an external drive get an internal drive. and on top of that make it blu ray r + rw ive found a couple af resonably priced drives, but now ive come to the Question , is it possible to do to my macbook being that it is so old. I am runing lion so im assuming it can read a blu ray disk and burn them but is my computer able to. What do i do i have the know how to install it on my on but i just need a link to an internal blu ray r + rw drive that is compatable with my computer and if there even is one.

I don't know if it will work with a 2007 but I do know that the optical drive in it has an IDE interface not a SATA. So any Blu-Ray drive would have to be IDE.

Internal Blu-ray drive upgrade.

Hi, as the ongoing saga of desiring a Blu-ray Read & Write drive in a Macbook Pro 17" is still a painful bag of hurt for many people including myself, I still can't help try and track down a suitable possible solution and likely contender.
I previously had upgraded the MacBook Pro's internal 2.5" Hard Disk Drive after having learned at the time that the internal cleareance of my early 2009 unibody MBP 17" allowed a capacious maximum form-factor 'thickness' of 12.5mm instead of the usual 9.5mm for an internal HDD. This was an extremely rewarding piece of info and allowed me to grace the MBP with a 1TB HDD inside, which is absolutely fantastic especially when using space for Bootcamp and of course dealing with Hi Definition video files using FCS, in which you can 'never' have enough space for (transcoding into Apple Pro Res can turn out some seriously huge files). The now fitted internal 1TB drive has now enabled the MacBook Pro 17 to become mobile once again and not fully relying on external drives.
Except Blu-ray.
I'm personally not keen on attaching an external Blu-ray drive which is why I initially got a MBP for mobility and therefore still looking for an eventual compatible internal version. The irony is that Final Cut Studio can edit and process Hi Definition Media, albeit without proper large optical-disc storage media to store it on and FCS's Compressor will even transcode it to Blu-ray format and burn on output to Blu-ray disc (even has a Blu-ray New Batch template). Toast 10 & 11 Titanium deals with Blu-ray (via it's Blu-ray plugin). Therefore it continues to be a painful legacy that the MBP is devoid of one.
My question is this, if upgrading the internal Super-drive to another optical drive, what are the exact dimension restriction and therefore the allowed thickness form-factor for a slot-loading optical drive on it's 'own' and with it's securing bracket/bezel. Is the bracket/bezel a standard fixture that will de-assemble and be re-used with a new replacement, or would any replacement drive come with a new suitable on affixed.
Any thoughts on the following two likely contenders. The first drive by FastMac Reads & Writes Blu-ray, the second drive by Sony Reads Blu-ray only but both makes read & write DVD's (no doubt Sony has a writeable slot-loading version somewhere buried within one of their Web Site because I had a Sony Laptop about 4 or 5 years ago that burned Blu-ray). It doesn't matter if for at least the immediate time being, it may not be actually possible to play Blu-ray movies within OS X lacking the kernels for it. If a compatible drive was found, then the rewards are:-
Storing massive amounts of data (up to 50GB on one disc). Fantastic fro backups and archiving.
Being able to FINNALLY output edited Hi Def video/movies from Final Cut Studio onto a Blu-ray disc and then playing that on a dedicated external Blu-ray player elsewhere.
Booting-up in Bootcamp for attempting to play-back Blu-ray movies using windows drivers, software and built-in OS kernels. (I'm not a Windows person, but can't deny it can save the day where some things are concerned)
Future-proofing; if one day soon Apple smiles on us all and releases a system OS update that enables 'full' Blu-ray support (or some other upgrade)

I have noted that on numerous wish lists for Mac enhancements has been Blue Ray capability. I looked at the Fast mac web site and the specifications were impressive. When I saw the price, I had to have the Heimlich maneuver performed. This is not to dissuade you or anyone else to purchase one. It simply is a reflection of my cheapness ex. for me SSD are overpriced for the value received but I take no issue for those who but them.
What I find to be very peculiar is the issue of apparent compatibility with only pre-unibody MBPs. We know that these MBP are slower than the subsequent generations. Blu-ray vidio files are huge. To load, tranferr, edit and compile these such files is best served with a fast processor. To install this on an older MBP seem like simultanously taking a step forward and a step backward.
Your list of virtues has merit but I have to take exception with your 'Future Proofing'. Apple has a habit of going down the road less traveled. If and when they integrate Blu-ray capability in their MBPs, it does not follow that the Fast Mac drive will be the same or have software compatibility.
I have both a pre-unibody MBP and a unibody MBP. I have changed the optical drive on the old machine and I have just looked inside the newer one (when I upgraded the HHD). They both APPEAR to be identical but I suspect there may be subtle physical differences. Hence this may be the reason why it can be installed only pre-unibody MBPs. (I can be bribed to take the both out and compare them!)
I would suggest to contact the technical department at OWC and find out if they are familiar with this product and what opinions they may have. I have dealt with them on several occasions and they seem knowledgeable.

I'm thinking about replacing the internal DVD burner (an old Pioneer drive) with a new Blue-Ray burner, just for backup purposes, not decoding or watching movies.
Does anybody have any experiences with the Blue-Ray drives in a PM 1.8DP?
I know they have the SATA interface, was also thinking about getting a controller card, but which one?

I do the same thing.
I archive to DVD data and files that I never want to lose or have corrupted.
Not all of my backup data is on DVD, but I estimate about 25-30 percent of my data has been burned to disc.
I am not sure if you can install any ole' internal BLu-ray into the G5.
It's an issue with the Mac hardware and OS recognizing the drive as a drive for native disc burning.
Don't quote me on this but the optical drives usually put into PowerMac towers were either made by Pioneer or LG.
I, also, believe that it has to be a some variant of SuperDrive.
I am not sure if your PowerMac will see an internal Blu-ray drive or not. Even if it is made by Pioneer or LG.
You maybe better off with an external, FireWire BLu-ray drive.
I would recomend ones from OWC ( macsales.com) or from LaCie.
